Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

For a first feature, Grant Singer could certainly do worse than Reptile. The question remains whether Netflix is capable of allowing anything better than routine potboiler material to fill their trove of originally produced and distributed films. Much of the streamer studio’s output has been heavily underwhelming and this latest offering is no different, the only adhesive element Benicio Del Toro’s natural screen gravitas. When he plays a cop or detective, like his Oscar-winning turn in Steven Soderberg’s Traffic or Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, it’s basically a cheat code.
Grant Singer’s best directorial decision in a film filled with clumsy ones is giving Del Toro as much real estate as possible, in many occasions having the entire screen filled by his visage––sad, squinted, glaring eyes look right at you through the dead-center of the frame. His voice, raspy and exhausted-sounding, talking under breath nearly the whole time,...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Sugar Ray's Caboose, directed by McG. Joseph McGinty, who chose McG as his nom de plume, is the epitome of the nineties, as a music video director. When you think of the style of 90's adverts and music videos, with their Xtreme edge, their pop-art pops of color, their fishbowl lens effects and their oversaturated lighting, let alone the many bikini clad women, baggy pants and spiky haircuts, you are thinking of a McG music video. Together with Joseph Kahn, Dave Meyers and Hype Williams, McG set the style for the era. Smash Mouth's All Star? That's McG. The Offspring's Pretty Fly For...

Quentin Tarantino visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Thursday to hawk his new book “Cinema Speculation,” to name-drop Claudia Cardinale within the first 30 seconds, to repeat the goofy “Dinosaur Walk” song he sings to his toddler son, and, ultimately, defend himself over claims about his Academy Award-winning film “Django Unchained.”
His book, an essay about favorite movies, also serves as something of an autobiography. While jawing with Jimmy Kimmel, he dished that his mother, Connie Zastoupil, used to date a number of sports celebrities. He mentioned Happy Hairston as who never took Qt to the movies, the same as a much more famous athlete, Wilt Chamberlain. Though the 13x NBA All-Star was, shall we say, notable for scoring on and off the court, the “Pulp Fiction” director claimed that Chamberlain and Tarantino’s mom were together for a few years and, while they were never exclusive, she was, for a spell,...

Kanye West has claimed that Quentin Tarantino and Jamie Foxx stole the idea of Django Unchained.
The rapper, who has made a number of antisemitic remarks in recent weeks, said he originally pitched the story to the pair in the hopes he could turn it into the music video for his 2005 song “Gold Digger”.
Foxx, who played the lead role in Tarantino’s Django Unchained in 2012, featured on West’s song.
West claimed to have pitched a slavery-themed story for the music video – but, in the end, the idea didn’t manifest. The video, which starred Foxx, was directed by Hype Williams.
Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, West, who now goes by the name Ye, said: “Actually, [Tarantino] and Jamie, they got the idea from me, because the idea for Django, I pitched to Jamie Foxx and Quentin Tarantino as the video for ‘Gold Digger’. And then Tarantino turned it into a film.

One year ago, as thousands of global film and TV industry reps descended on Berlin for the European Film Market, executives from Nigerian production and distribution powerhouse FilmOne Entertainment had good reason to feel optimistic. The company had recently unveiled a $1 million film fund with China’s Huahua Media and South Africa’s Empire Entertainment, an unprecedented pact for the Nigerian movie industry. Production on the first film financed by the fund had just begun, and it looked like the start to a promising year.

Travis Scott has teamed up with M.I.A. and Young Thug for his latest single, “Franchise.” On Thursday, he also premiered the video at IMAX screenings for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet before sharing it on YouTube at midnight.
The new visual, which the rapper self-directed alongside White Trash Tyler, was partially filmed at Michael Jordan’s Chicago area mansion. Luxury cars pull up to the gates sporting Jordan’s number “23.” Inside the mansion, Scott hangs with women, chills on the basketball court and parties on the grounds. He also...

Sure, you might feel like partying when you land a dope new job, but do you flex like a rap star in front of 300,000 people when you do it? If so, you have something in common with newly minted Netflix Global Chief Marketing Officer Bozoma Saint John, who celebrated the start of the new job earlier this week with an extremely eye-catching Instagram clip that should go down as one of the era’s most enjoyable victory laps.
Posted Monday on her first official day on the job, the clip (set to rapper Saweetie’s 2018 single “Icy Girl”) shows Saint John kicking it in style at a jaw-dropping palatial coastal villa, with multiple wardrobe changes, a faux red carpet walk, plenty of dancing and lots of just lounging around in the sun — often while holding up a book with a dust jacket that reads “Bad Ass Boz.” Great idea Bozoma...

Justin Timberlake and Sza have released a new song from the Trolls World Tour soundtrack, and while that might not inspire much hope, the song is very good. It’s called “The Other Side,” and is a funky, upbeat single that, like much of the soundtrack, was written by Timberlake alongside producer Ludwig Göransson.
Jt and Sza both star in the music video for “The Other Side,” released on Wednesday, which pays homage to classic Hype Williams hip-hop videos from the Nineties. The fisheye lens, the silver bodysuits, the sci-fi...

“YouTube at 15” is our package of stories to celebrate the streaming site’s anniversary. It’s hard to imagine, but there really was a time before makeup tutorials, conspiracy explainers, on-demand music videos — really, viral videos at large. Melina Matsoukas is known for directing some of the most compelling and visually striking music videos including Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Beyonce’s game-changing “Formation” — both earned her an MTV Video Music Award. This year, she made her foray into the feature space with Queen and Slim. Written by Emmy winner Lena Waithe and starring Academy Award nominee Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith, the film has been causing buzz ever since it was announced.
As her feature debut, Matsoukas had a tall order — specifically with the film’s timely story of police violence against the black community. She unpacked how she approached the film and the responsibility she had as a filmmaker and woman of color to have this story be as authentic as possible. She also explained why comparing it to Bonnie and Clyde isn’t exactly ideal for her. On top of all that, Matsoukas...

Missy Elliott performed a medley of famous hits at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday. Her dazzling set included “Throw It Back,” “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch,” and “Lose Control.”
Elliott opened her performance with her newest song, “Throw It Back” — a surprising choice given the numerous hits in her back-catalog. But in the context of her medley, Elliott’s latest track took on a new significance: The bass line merged smoothly with the low-end of “The Rain (Super Fly),” her debut single.

Teyana Taylor pays tribute to innovative music video director Hype Williams in her new visual for “Hywi?”, her latest single featuring the rapper King Combs.
The video, directed by Taylor herself (credited as Teyana “Spike Lee” Taylor), references the hip-hop and R&b videos of the late Nineties and early aughts, particularly those by prolific director Hype Williams. Video credits are displayed at the beginning and end of the clip – just like it would be if it were airing on MTV – and Taylor’s gender-flipping fashion matches the style of the era.

Songwriter-producer Sg Lewis dropped a video today for his new collaboration with wunderkind singer Clairo, “Better,” and it’s a reverent homage to director Hype Williams’ era-defining, fish-eye-lens videos from the late ‘90s/early ‘00s with Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and others. You half expect Mase to pop up in one of the scenes.
Filmed in Chicago and produced by Weird Life Films, the clip features the two apparently having a blast as they drive around the city in tracksuits and bop around a dancefloor. Lewis finds many ways to be interesting on-camera while Clairo sings, ranging from walking on his hands, breakdancing and playing around with a disco ball.
According to Lewis, the song was the end result of a spontaneous writing session. “I played Clairo the instrumental and she jumped on it straight away,” he recalls. “I kept the beat unquantized from the jam as I felt...

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I bring back a couple of golden oldies from the show’s past. We took this week off from recording to enjoy a long, gluttonous holiday weekend. But that doesn’t mean we’d leave you without something to listen to. And so, from the Ayt vaults (which you can find here, if you’d like to explore our old episodes), I’ve put together a crime movie double feature: Mathieu Kassovitz‘ scorching, energetic masterpiece from 1995, “La Haine” and Hype Williams‘ “Belly,” from 1998, a misunderstood movie with insanely beautiful visuals that distills the urban crime thriller into a hallucinogenic orgy of experiential moments and sequences.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Inspired by Baby Groot’s “Mr. Blue Sky” dance sequence at the beginning of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” what movie has the best opening credits sequence?
April Wolfe (@awolfeful), La Weekly
Hands down, it’s R.W. Fassbinder’s “The Marriage of Maria Braun.” I watch the opening sequence at least three times a year and show it to every filmmaker I can. I love any film that begins with a bang, and this one does quite literally: We open up on an explosion that rips out a hunk of brick wall, exposing a German couple in the middle of a rushed marriage ceremony.

Bad Boys (1995)
Movie directors who broke through to the mainstream in the ’90s tended to do it one of two ways, either through independent film or music videos. The music-video route was probably the less respectable one, but plenty of genuine auteurs still came up through that farm system: Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, the one-movie wonder Hype Williams. But music videos also produced plenty of big-screen hacks: McG, Brett Ratner, Gore Verbinski, Simon West, Marc Webb. The music-video world only produced one auteur hack, and that was Michael Bay.

Kendall Jenner closed out Love magazine’s advent calendar with some not-so-peaceful meditation.
The 21-year-old model sported a nude, bedazzled bikini in the Day 25 video for the annual calendar titled “Love Meditation.” And appeared to sit on a cloud as she attempted to become one with the universe. Liz Goldwyn directed the video.
Set to a cosmic backdrop, showing a cloudy then star-filled sky, Jenner sat with her eyes closed. She soon stood and let out a yell as lightening flashed around her.
Keeping with Love’s attention-grabbing theme, a close-up of the star showed animated, rainbow tears falling from Jenner’s eyes.

We’re only five days into December, but Love magazine and their annual advent calendar are already well into the holiday spirit. In the past, the publication has made no bones about the fact that Kendall Jenner is the number one model in their life, regularly featuring her on their cover, getting her behind the camera to shoot editorials, and even letting her creative-direct their forthcoming issue. So, it seems only natural the reality star would also be a regular staple of the magazine’s month of sexy minute-long videos, making her debut for the series on Monday in one of their standard lingerie-centric shorts.

When Space Jam debuted in theaters on Nov. 15, 1996, it was an undeniable hit. The film told the story of Michael Jordan's return to basketball after being recruited by Bugs Bunny to help defend the Looney Tunes from a gang of aliens. (Jordan himself returned to basketball in 1995 after a brief attempt at baseball.) Combining the appeal of Jordan and Looney Tunes, the film quickly raced to No. 1, grossing over $90 million in the U.S. and becoming the third highest-grossing sports film of all time.
