American singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer is coming under fire on social media for saying U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will “make punk rock great again.” “It’s been a really scary time in America,” Palmer said at a news conference during Australia’s Woodford Folk festival, according to the Guardian. “I don’t know how it’s felt over here for the past few months, but it’s a total s— show over there. Especially if you’re an artist, a woman, a minority, gay — anything but a rich white man — it’s really very scary.” “But being an optimist … there is this part of me.

Theban Plays Created by Ryan Pater, Eliza McKelway and Deidrea Hamid Directed by Asa Horvitz The Brick, Brooklyn, NY January 22-30, 2016
Anyone expecting from Theban Plays a straightforward modernized retelling of Sophoclean tragedies should abandon that idea. This highly experimental work, conceived and directed by Asa Horvitz and created by its performers, uses its ancient Greek antecedents, short pieces of which are read at several points, as a jumping-off point for a tapestry of monologues, video, audio and music, and even painting. Taken together, these elements bring lines of thought inspired by its sources to bear on an interrogation of aspects of the modern condition.
Theban Plays is structured as three main sections, each centered on a version of a character from Sophocles. All three, "Oedcast," "Jocasta/Colonus," and "Antigone," decontextualize their speakers as residents of contemporary NYC. The Oedipus figure (Ryan Pater) in "Oedcast" arrived in the city with...

It takes a lot to grab people's attentions in bustling city streets, but Jae West knew what she had to do. The Australian woman, inspired by Amanda Palmer's Ted talk, stripped down to her bra and underwear in the middle of Piccadilly Circus in London to make a powerful statement about positive body image. A member of a group called The Liberators International, a blindfolded West held markers and invited people to draw hearts on her body. Lying against her legs was a sign that explained her mission. "I'm standing for anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder or self-esteem issue like me...To support self-acceptance draw a [heart] on my body," the sign read. That she confessed to suffering...

Every year, Knitting Factory/City Winery founder Michael Dorf hosts a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall benefiting music-education programs. And the honoree of this year’s 11th annual show was a true (honorary) New York legend: David Byrne. Featuring performances from the likes of CeeLo, Amanda Palmer, and Billy Gibbons from Zz Top, it was a night of yelpy singing, jittery dancing, and at least one comically oversize suit. Here’s a rundown of the night’s highs (high high high high hiiiiighs … sorry) and lows.Performer: Cibo Matto featuring Nels ClineSong: “I Zimbra” Well, this was wonderful: a perfect pairing of performers and song. Clad in all-white everything, the recently reunited Japan-by-way-of-nyc food-pop duo Cibo Matto expertly walked that very Byrne-ian tightrope between artful self-seriousness and goofy, unadulterated joy. During the instrumental part, they did a series of synchronized dance moves that recalled a cross between air-traffic controllers and...

Welcome to the February 10, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story? Leave Uma Thurman the hell alone, cries a small chorus of reasonable humans. After the "Slap" star was spotted on a red carpet looking "almost unrecognizable," according to multiple ultra-classy outlets, a precious few writers leaped to Thurman's defense, including Health.com's Lisa Lombardi, who wrote: "The problem with this line of commentary on her so-called transformation is that the woman in question is screwed either way: She’s either getting too old or she’s trying to hide that she’s getting too old." For his part, Time's Daniel D’Addario weighed in with a different take, comparing the situation to the recent hubbub surrounding Renee Zelleweger's supposed "transformation" several months ago: "Renée Zellweger and Uma Thurman have a great deal in common," D'Addario writes.

Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's new daily rundown of all the things people are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story? Jesse Ventura puts "American Sniper" Chris Kyle on blast. The former Minnesota governor slammed the Iraq war vet in an interview with the Associated Press published today, saying in part: "A hero must be honorable, must have honor. And you can't have honor if you're a liar." Ventura was making reference to a passage in Kyle's book where the Seal claimed to have punched out the wrestler in a California bar - an alleged fabrication that netted Ventura $1.8 million in a defamation settlement. So will he be seeing the movie? Not likely: in another choice quote, he calls the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic "as authentic as 'Dirty Harry.'" Oof. Want more? There's plenty of indignation to go around. See below for a full roundup of today's kerfuffles.

"Amanda F---ing Palmer on the Rocks," is a short documentary that follows rock star Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls) and as she raises $1.2 million dollars on Kickstarter to fund a career outside the industry. In the trailer for the film, which is directed by Ondi Timoner (Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner for 2009 documentary "We Live in Public"), we catch up with badass Amanda Palmer, who holds a record for crowd-funding in the music industry. Mixed in with clips of her performances, we also get a voiceover from the punk artist, who insists that "we're allowed to just f---ing help each other!" It looks to be a fun, loud and mostly, importantly indie. "Amanda F---ing Palmer on the Rocks" will screen at Tribeca on April 19th at noon. In Doha, there was once a buzzing festival and schemes to nurture local talent, but now much of the the money in the Qatari film business goes to projects elsewhere – such as the $55m co-production Black Gold
• Black Gold: Jean-Jacques Annaud's Arabian frights
A video appearing to show Omar Sharif slapping a woman was not supposed to be the biggest story to come out of the 2011 Doha Tribeca film festival. The focus should have been on Black Gold, a $55m Qatari co-production – and arguably the most ambitious film shot in the Middle East since Lawrence of Arabia – which had had its world premiere just days earlier. To the irritation of the organisers, however, it was the right arm of the 1962 epic's octogenarian breakout star, incensed by a persistent fan, which stole the headlines.

Elevator Pitch: This is the first documentary to look at the crowdfunding revolution and the people powering it. The film will follow the inspiring, dramatic stories of a handful of crowdfunded project creators as they raise money and then, with all of their dreams and social capital on the line, have to deliver. Those journeys are set against the background of a bigger cultural and economic sea change — where the creative/entrepreneurial class can create their own projects independently. The film will also have interviews with Zach Braff, Amanda Palmer, John Vanderslice, Brian Fargo and dozens of other prominent crowdfunding personalities.

I was named after my great-great-aunt Mandy. She was a "real character," according to my mother — "determined, outspoken," the kind of Southern woman you'd see chewing tobacco on the front porch. My mom promises that Amanda was not a popular name in 1984 (though the Social Security site contradicts her a little); Dynasty had been on the air for a few years, but the Amanda character — whom my mother always blames for the name's ubiquity — wasn't introduced until later. "I always liked it," my mom said when I asked if she had any regrets about the choice. "But I would have preferred to name you a less common name."I've come to feel the same way. 2013 has not been a great year for Amandas, as anyone with a passing interest in pop culture could tell you. She also encouraged him to get on Twitter. In the letter, Palmer surmised that if 500,000 people pre-bought Morrissey’s new record for $5 measly dollars (which would never happen, because Morrissey wouldn’t let himself be devalued like that ...

Because she has not been in the news enough of late, Amanda Palmer — who used Kickstarter to fund her own album, before asking fans to play in her tour band for free — wrote an open letter to Morrissey recommending that he do the same. "You wouldn’t have to tour and risk your health … " she says, referencing Morrissey's recent tour cancellation. "You wouldn’t have to do any promotional work for it if you didn’t want to." (Want to being the key words when we are talking about the professional provocative-quote-giver that is Morrissey.) There is some legitimate math in the letter, but it is mostly about how Amanda Palmer would like a more famous musician to validate her ideas. That sounds right.

There’s a large and growing number of people who know Amanda Palmer only nominally as a musician and recognize her instead as a small-scale media personality, Internet character, or frequent object of derision. This situation might be slightly unfair, but it’s also perfectly natural, and I suspect there are things about social relationships and art and the web that can be learned from it.From the beginning of her career, Palmer’s fit a divisive archetype, one you might picture in a late-eighties teen movie or college novel: the extroverted drama-club kid whose classmates view her as weird, pretentious, and obnoxiously attention-seeking. This is not a bad type to be; the eye-rolls of strangers are easily shrugged off, and if you make successful art, there are those who’ll receive you as a hero. I’d argue that Palmer’s first act, the “cabaret punk” duo Dresden Dolls,...

It only says that it's the eeriest poem up there, by the way, because it is, in fact, the eeriest, most inappropriately-timed poem probably of all time, but surely you already knew that, huh? Amanda Palmer, lead singer of the Dresden Dolls, recently penned this poem -- a poem whom she claimed was about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the alleged bombers of the Boston Marathon. Here's the eeriest poem in life (warning: it's long -- and unsettling): you don’t know how it felt to be in the womb but it must have been at least a little warmer than this. you don’t know how intimately they’re recording your every move on closed-circuit cameras until you see your face reflected back at you through through the pulp. you don’t know how to stop picking at your fingers. you don’t know how little you’ve been...

Boston resident Amanda Palmer has somehow found a way to make the city's marathon bombing about her, with the already-pretty-self-involved artist releasing a poem to mark the event. Addressed to suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, “A Poem For Dzhokhar” talks about the events of last week, but also somehow manages to weave in gripes about iPhone battery life, typos, and not knowing how many Vietnamese spring rolls to order. Palmer attempts to humanize Tsarnaev (which is admirable, we guess?), but ultimately the poem fails on several levels, mostly because it’s absolutely insipid. For example, consider the following eyeroll-inducing segment: "you ...

The singer and Kickstarter villain posted a poem for Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on her website yesterday, and it turns out a vast majority of the Internet does not want to read Amanda Palmer's attempt to insert herself into the tragedy — even if it involves Vietnamese soft rolls. Read the angry comments (or the poem, if you really want to) here.

Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer has sparked controversy after writing a poem for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old suspected of being responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings that left three people dead and 140 injured.
On April 21, Palmer, 32, posted a poem on her website that urged empathy for Tsarnaev, titled "A Poem For Dzhokhar."
The poem, which Gawker called "the worst poem of all time," is written in the second person and is a list of things that the younger Tsarnaev brother supposedly doesn't know:
you don’t know how it felt to be in the womb but it must have been at least a little warmer than this.
you don’t know how intimately they’re recording your every move on closed-circuit cameras until you see your face reflected back at you through through the pulp.

It only took eleven hours for Veronica Mars fans to collectively bid the $2 million on Kickstarter that would get a movie sequel made to Kristen Bell’s defunct WB show: While Warner Bros. would pay for distribution and marketing, the contributions would be funding all of the production costs. Yesterday, it became the fastest Kickstarter project to hit $1 million (doing so in just under four and a half hours), cementing hopes that, after more moderate success for original projects like Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion film ($406,000) or Amanda Palmer’s Theatre Is Evil ($1.2 million), the site was now officially a viable power-to-the-people tool that could wrest decisions and creative dilution from micromanaging Hollywood executives. However, before proclaiming a new dawn in which studios and music labels atrophy as decisions are completely commandeered by artists and audiences, it’s important to point out that Veronica Mars is a very specific case. It...

The "Veronica Mars" TV show wrapped in 2007, but that hasn't stopped fans and star Kristen Bell from wishing for a sequel out loud and on the Internet for years. Show creator Rob Thomas even pitched a feature-length movie about the young amateur detective, now in her college years, but was turned down. That's not stopping them, though. With Bell's encouragement, fans have signed petitions and tweeted at Warner Bros. to no avail. Now they're pitching in to Kickstart the flick themselves. According to EW.com, if the project raises $2M in 30 days, and only if it reaches that amount, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will produce, market, and distribute the film with a limited theatrical run and digital release. Although the Kickstarter package is full of goodies for fans, even those who can only afford to kick in $10, it's still raising some dust that a project of this size being fronted...

For years now, the music industry has been in decline. Illegal downloading, torrenting and streaming of tracks has for a long time been commonplace. Such activities are the spiritual succession to recording mix-tapes of tracks directly from the radio. (Gosh, do you remember cassette tapes? I’m getting old.) When home computers became more readily available and the CD boom occurred, burning CDs and sharing between friends was even more popular. But nothing’s left a greater scar upon the music industry than high-speed internet and everything that’s come with it.
I remember cassette tapes recorded from my dad’s car stereo, I remember burning CDs and writing, “For Lucy,” on the blank face of the disk as a gift to the girl I fancied, I remember the veritable feast that was Limewire and allowing my hard-drive to gorge on thousands of tracks I’d never get around to listening to.

Amanda Palmer and The Grand Theft Orchestra just released their newest video for "The Bed Song," a single off their Kickstarter-backed album, "Theatre is Evil." Get ready to shed some tears, fans, because this one's heart-wrenching:
The work was directed by Michael McQuilken and shot on the property of Bard College last year. Describing her devastatingly sad video, Palmer stated in a press release: “When I wrote the script for 'The Bed Song' video, I knew it could either turn out looking like a heartbreaking piece of filmed theater or a bad soap opera. I think we achieved the former."
Let us know what you think of the new project, courtesy of your favorite Dresden Doll, in the comments section, and see Palmer talk about her successful Kickstarter project and upcoming Ted talk on HuffPost Live here.

Good morning and Happy Valentine's Day!
Alisha Dixon was the first out lesbian to ever make it to Hollywood on American Idol, at least that we saw. Unfortunately she was axed last night, but she could still be brought back as a wildcard.
Jillian Michaels was on Watch What Happens Live last night and she would not bang Rachel Maddow, but the actress Melissa Rauch said she definitely would. Then Jillian said she hasn't talked to Jackie Warner in years because they were "business partners." Mhm!
The gifs from the upcoming Gossip music video for "Get a Job" look pretty hilarious and amazing. I can't wait to see the final product.
Check out the new track from sisters CoCoRosie, which is "is an imagined conversation between an abandoned child and an outcast old woman.

Rip Amanda Todd: Cult Favorite Singer/Songwriter Amanda Palmer Writes Post In Memory Of Bullied Teen
Amanda Palmer's most recent crusade started with a simple Google search.
The former Dresden Dolls frontwoman has amassed a massive social media following (over 750,000 Twitter followers -- with new 1,000 new followers per day) and has a legion of devoted fans. But that doesn't mean she's impervious to Internet criticism. While Googling herself, Palmer came across the story of a different Amanda, a 15-year-old who committed suicide in October after being viciously bullied both in person and online. She found the video of Amanda Todd.
Palmer was struck by the "poetic" parallels of Todd's YouTube life story, written on note cards, and her own Bob Dylan-esque note card video announcing her new album and asking for Kickstarter money to fund her tour.
What followed was a lengthy blog post "on internet hatred" that spawned over 800 comments on her blog alone.
She asked her fans to tell their own experiences.

Got a bright idea for a film, a comic or even a hi-tech watch? For many, Kickstarter could be the answer – and now it's launched in Britain
Time was, in the olden days, that in order to create a video game, or fund a film or album, or make a comic, you needed a generous and deep-pocketed patron, or a corporation behind you which thought there was something – profit, in other words – in it for them. There might have even been a grant from an arts body somewhere. Remember them?
Crowdfunding, where large numbers of people donate small sums of money to a project, has changed that. Kickstarter is not the first online funding site for creative projects – ArtistShare was launched in 2003 to enable musicians to bypass record labels, and was followed by other sites such as IndieGogo – but it has gained the most traction and attention.

Former Dresden Dolls bandleader Amanda Palmer exceeded expectations, including her own, when she launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year to release her latest album. However, she was caught off guard by an outcry on the Internet when she did not pay guest musicians she invited onto the stage during the tour to support the Kickstarter-supported album. For Palmer, Kickstarter is a way to release music outside of the major-label system. In an age of ubiquitous free music, she was fair with her pricing. Taking a page from the Radiohead playbook, donors could download the entire album for $1. Palmer arranged for a slew of other prizes to go to bigger donors. It was a well-designed campaign. The backlash came, though, when fans, knowing that she ended up raising over $1 million for the campaign and did not pay all of her guest musicians. This wasn't part of her deal with them,...
