Wilmer Valderrama has a very personal reason for launching “Essential Voices,” his podcast featuring interviews with essential and frontline workers. His dad battled Covid-19 and suffered two minor heart attacks in the past year. “They showed up and helped my dad be with us for many more years,” the “NCIS” star tells me. “I’m so thankful, and I want to make sure their voices are heard. That’s my small contribution back for what they’ve done for my family.” Today, his father’s recovery is progressing. “He’s still working through his respiratory stuff, and he’s still trying to get his stamina back,” Valderrama says. “He’s working out every day. MPTF (Motion Picture & Television Fund) hosted the 14th annual edition of its iconic pre-Emmy Awards party, reimagined as “The Evening Before: Special Edition.”
The virtual benefit took place on Saturday, September 19, and celebrated Emmy nominees and other TV industry members, all while helping to raise funds for their colleagues and work family who benefit from MPTF’s charitable programs and services. The evening featured one-of-a-kind musical performances, special appearances from Emmy nominees and some of television’s brightest stars sharing how MPTF is supporting the entertainment community during this unprecedented time. The annual event raised $1.5 million last night.
“MPTF has never been more essential to our entertainment community. It has stepped up during this pandemic in heroic ways both for our residents on campus and for our workforce in the community. We’ve never been prouder of our efforts to take care of our own,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chairman of the MPTF Board of Governors.

Selena Gomez and Blackpink know how to end the summer on a sweet note — by releasing their new single, “Ice Cream,” just before Labor Day. The music video for the infectious candy-coated tune, which will appear on the K-pop group’s upcoming full-length album, was viewed close to 100 million times within 24 hours of its Aug. 28 release on YouTube.
“It’s definitely a joyful thing. Being a part of it brought me joy,” Gomez, 28, says on Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “It’s hopefully what everybody else will get from it too. I just want people to feel good. I have a 7-year-old sister, and just to see her dancing to it — she hasn’t been able to go to school, and just seeing how much fun it can be, it was such a highlight.”

In its young life, Amazon Studios has proven unafraid of splashy premieres for its theatrical and streaming titles.
They staged a fun run through the streets of Hollywood from the screening to the after party of the festival darling “Brittany Runs a Marathon.” They shut down Pasadena’s Rose Bowl and erected a world’s fair, complete with hot air balloons, for Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones’ “The Aeronauts.”
But in the time of coronavirus, with padlocked movie theaters and social distance orders in place, the company is weaponizing its promotional budgets to make a different kind of impression — supporting devastated local businesses and helping to feed school kids.
Within the past month, Amazon has staged two “at-home” movie premieres for tastemakers and press, providing dinner, concession snacks, some good wine and other creature comforts. Deliveries in over 10 markets across the country utilize product from local food and beverage shops,...

Los Angeles chef Evan Funke could have followed in his father Alex Funke’s Oscar-winning footsteps doing special effects photography for movies like “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” But instead, Funke became the king of handmade pasta, starting out at Spago and Rustic Canyon and then opening his own restaurants, the now-closed Bucato and wildly popular Felix in Venice.
His obsessive journey to mastering the pasta craft is detailed in “Funke,” the first full-length documentary from Tastemade Studios. When the Santa Monica-based production company launched five years ago, it focused on YouTube videos and an app that allowed users to make professional-looking food videos. Tastemade evolved to launching its own digital channel, serving up viral food and travel videos on Snapchat and Facebook and even selling a tailgate cooking show to the Cooking Channel.

Mazel tov goes out to Shiri Appleby and her fiance, restaurateur Jon Shook, for welcoming their baby girl, born March 23 in Los Angeles.
The "Girls" and "Roswell" star previously told Us Weekly she did not want to know the sex of the baby, so welcoming the little lady was very much a surprise. "She's heaven," Appleby told the magazine. "I'm beyond thrilled."
