Ahead of their July tour dates, Broken Social Scene stopped by CBS This Morning to perform songs from their 2019 EPs Let’s Try the After Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.
The Canadian indie rock band, which fluctuates in size from six to 19 members, delivered a thrilling rendition of “Can’t Find My Heart,” followed by the dreamy “1972” and the explosive post-rock track “Remember Me Young.”

Earlier this spring, the ragtag group of Canadian indie-rock lifers and unapologetic idealists known as Broken Social Scene made their way from Toronto to Austin, Texas, to perform eight shows in less than one week. “We didn’t have our gear for the first few shows,” says Kevin Drew, the 17-member band’s de facto frontman. “It was a clusterfuck, and it was an absolute joy.”

So many films are devoted to chronicling the coming-of-age of teenage outcasts that these dramas may as well be their own genre. As filmmakers and screenwriters adapt elements of his or her own upbringing to the screen, the genre is often a tough one to tire from, since each creator lends their own perspectives to these stories of curiosity, heartbreak, new friendships and social pressures. Writer/director Lindsay MacKay has made a variety of shorts focused on youths; now, for her feature debut, Wet Bum, she focuses on both the delicate beauty and the danger associated with growing up.
In the Canadian coming-of-age drama, Julia Sarah Stone gives a performance of tremendous depth, spark and dramatic range. (The Toronto Film Festival crowned Stone as one of the festival’s four Rising Stars this year.) The young actor plays Sam, a pale, lonely teen that does not have many friends. After school,...

As one of the most visionary creators in modern time, David Cronenberg has garnered an eclectic filmography that includes deranged horror masterpieces like Videodrome and more conventional, yet audacious, narratives like A History of Violence. Now, audiences will have the chance to be immersed in the filmmaker’s universe via the Tiff and the Canadian Film Centre’s Media Lab (Cfc Media Lab) transmedia production Body/Mind/Change. This unique interactive experience stars Cronenberg himself and exposes the plausible science fiction that inhabits his oeuvre as scientific facts.
“Working with Tiff on Body/Mind/Change offered an unparalleled opportunity for Cfc Media Lab to work with the amazing David Cronenberg; Lance Weiler, an incomparable storyteller reinventing entertainment using transmedia; and a passionate group of digital designers and companies,” said Cfc’s Chief Digital Officer Ana Serrano, who is also worked with Tiff on Body/Mind/Change. “It has been an exciting creative journey resulting in North America’s first interactive storytelling experience that generates a physical object for the user that has narrative meaning.”
“The Cronenberg Project is Tiff’s first fully-curated exhibition offers visitors a truly unique experience, both within the Tiff Lightbox and beyond with Body/Mind/Change,” added Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, Tiff Bell Lightbox. “In addition to Lance Weiler’s artistic direction and the Cfc team, David Cronenberg’s involvement in this project has made it one of the coolest multimedia projects in the world.”
The Cfc Media Lab has assembled an incredible team that includes some of the most innovative creative minds in North America working on digital media today. One of these amazing artists is Lance Weiler who is serving as the creative director and experience designer Body/Mind/Change. Weller history with Cfc Media Lab goes back to his own work The Last Broadcast, which he presented at their Interactive Arena Series as one of the pioneering minds to combine traditional storytelling with modern technology. 1188 Films, Aesthetec, Northern Army, and composer Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene among others, form the rest of the extremely talented team. In the production side there is Art Hindle, who is one of Cronenberg’s recurrent collaborations, as well as Joey Klein and alumni from the Cfc Actors Conservatory program, Diana Bentley and Natalie Krill.
“Working with David Cronenberg on Body/Mind/Change was an amazing experience. With his participation we were able to create a layered story world that will immerse participants in his fiction as if it were reality,” says Lance Weiler, creative director and experience designer of Body/Mind/Change."
Body/Mind/Change is inspired by the intellectual property found in Cronenberg’s films, such as Scanners, Videodrome and eXistenZ. In this realm, the director’s partners with Bmc Labs, a fictional biotech firm, to develop biotech enhancement implants. On October 25, registered participants will be guided through an episodic interactive narrative that functions as a simulator for training their PODs. Once each participant completes this three-part experience they are guaranteed a unique Pod generated from their behavior during the simulations. Their Pod will be available for pick-up at the close of the David Cronenberg: Evolution exhibition in January 2014 at the Bmc Labs installation, located in the Cibc Canadian Film Gallery on the 4th floor of the Tiff Bell Lightbox.

Paul Schrader has come to Venice in two roles: that of jury president of the Horizons section and as the director of The Canyons, showing here out of competition. This is fitting for a man whose CV flits between an impressive list of writing credits (such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull) and directorial contributions (most notably American Gigolo). Alas for Venice audiences, The Canyons is far, far from impressive.
The Canyons tells the story of a wealthy trust fund brat, Christian (Jimmy Deen), who has decided to get into producing films merely to get his dad off his back about his layabout lifestyle. He’s in a relationship with Tara (Lindsey Lohan) and in the opening restaurant scene, Christian lets his dinner guests – his assistant Gina (Amanda Brooks) and her boyfriend Ryan (Nolan Gerard Funk) – know that he and Tara like to spice things up by inviting girls, couples...

While Steven Soderbergh’s assertion that “The Canyons” has “a spectacular sex scene” has been one of many tantalizing teases for the movie, audiences clamoring to see Lindsay Lohan in the Paul Schrader-directed, Brett Easton Ellis-penned film waiting to see for themselves how it all turns out. The film has been greeted by all kinds of mini-scandals and buzz, and it's been something the trailers and photos are hoping to capitalize off of, and audiences are only a couple weeks away from seeing the finished product. And while verdict awaits for the movie, the soundtrack – to be released digitally at the end of July – sounds like a tribute to Cliff Martinez’s “Drive” score. The predominant songs on the soundtrack are by Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning alongside group Me&John; “The Canyons Theme” and “Without the Night” have an airy, psychedelic beat that sets the tone for...

Trainwreck? Judge For Yourself With 3 Minute Clip From 'The Canyons' With Lindsay Lohan & James Deen
To be certain, the recent must-read New York Times Magazine article on the making of Paul Schrader's "The Canyons" brought the movie to the attention of a public that was probably not aware it was even happening. But even while movie sites and tabloids kept abreast of the developments on the low budget indie starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, the feature article revealed not only just how painful the shoot was, but also the friction between the director, writer Bret Easton Ellis and producer Braxton Pope. Included in the article, but not available to be shared online until now, a three minute clip for "The Canyons" pretty much explains why Steven Soderbergh offered to give it an edit. Tediously paced, a bit nonsensical and poorly acted all around (though the score by Brendan Canning isn't too bad), this is a long elaborate set up to reveal...

A number of Canadian musicians have joined forces to show their support for Idle No More, the movement of First Nations people for "healthy, just, equitable and sustainable communities."
According to the CBC, Feist, Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Blue Rodeo, former Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page and The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie have signed a petition backing the movement. The petition was started by Weakerthans' singer John K. Samson just before Christmas (Dec. 21) and originally sent it through various contacts.
"The response was immediate and huge, from artists of all disciplines, genres and mediums," Samson said, adding he got the idea after a conversation with his friend and writer Leanne Simpson, a member of the Alderville First Nation. "It's fundamental to how we think of ourselves and our identity and what a fair and just society should be. Artists have to be right at the forefront of that,...

For his first feature film since 2008's "Adam Resurrected," famed screenwriter and director Paul Schrader is drawing on a particularly diverse and unique group of talent for "The Canyons." Boasting a script penned by Bret Easton Ellis with a cast featuring adult film star James Deen, Lindsay Lohan and up and comers Nolan Funk and Amanda Brook, another intriguing element has been added to the production. Broken Social Scene co-founder Brendan Canning has been selected to score "The Canyons." While the musician has found fame and acclaim both as a member of Bss and as a solo artist, he's no stranger to the movie world. Canning has scored films such as Bruce McDonald's “The Tracy Fragments” and “Trigger” as well as “Snow Cake.” And alongside Broken Social Scene, he's participated on soundtrack work for “Half Nelson”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “It’s Kind of a...

The best soundtracks of 2010 are somewhat varied and random. Not always does a great film produce great music and sometimes a horrible film can have decent music, there is no pattern. Thus, I have made my own very subjective selective pattern. Using my main theory that a soundtrack is best when it reflects and capitalizes on the moments and story of the film and weaker when its motive is good music placed thoughtlessly in scenes, each inclusion still has its own exceptions. For instance, monotony is not a highly praised quality, but see how many Brian Eno and Broken Social Scene tracks are present on this list! So read, enjoy, agree or disagree because it is all in good fun.
10. It’s Kind of a Funny Story

Grunge-god turned martyr for the adolescent Kurt Cobain once said, “teenage angst is dead and gone/now I’m bored and old.” There are no filmmakers that reject this statement other than Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, two warming young filmmakers who have featured teenagers and their pressures prominently in their critical successes Half Nelson and Sugar. This defiance against the darkness of teenage angst is refuted by their latest movie, It’s Kind of A Funny Story, a new comedy about a young man named Craig (Keir Gilchrist) who thinks his depression and suicidal thoughts merit a trip to a psychiatric ward. Once he learns that he can’t leave the ward once he has signed himself in, Craig attempts to make the best of his experience. He learns about the things we really should be “crazy” about in life, especially with the wisdom of his friend Bobby (as...

A film packed with plenty of solid tunes as well as pop culture references, we celebrate the eclectic soundtrack of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World...
The recipient of two excellent four star reviews on this very site, courtesy of Michael and James, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is, without doubt, the geekiest film of the year. And while it's not a film without faults, it's as close to a perfect an adaptation of the source as I could have hoped for.
I had a lot of fun with the film and it blended everything I'm geeky about in a 110 minute film. Given the nature of my weekly column, it's no surprise that music, and specifically movie music, is something I'm quite passionate about and, as more news about the soundtrack surfaced, I got more and more excited.
The wait for the UK release of the soundtrack was rather excruciating, but it was worth it.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World week is finally here! Spinner has kindly allowed both the score and the soundtrack to Edgar Wright‘s latest to stream in its entirety. The original score by Nigel Godrich is just beautiful, as it is seamlessly infested with videogame influences. He also had some help by Beck Hansen, Cornelius, Dan Nakamura, Kid Koala, David Campbell, Danny Goffey, Gaz Coombes, Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Joey Waronker, and Gus Seyffert. As for the soundtrack is is completely rockin’ and definitely worth a listen (and many more).

This afternoon, Edgar Wright took the airwaves with a two hour music show on the BBC's 6 Music, something they called A Month of Matinees... With Edgar Wright. As well as playing an awful lot of soundtrack cuts from old TV shows and films, he also spilled a little bit of information on the music for his upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Early in the show he played five tracks by six artists who have music in the film. These were Metric; Kevin Canning as a representative of The Broken Social Scene; Handsome Boy Modeling School on behalf of Dan the Automator; the beautiful, brilliant Cornelius remix of Beck's Mixed Bizness; and Frank Black doing I Hear Ramona Sing. Like Kevin Drew's kinda-solo effort from last year, Spirit If., Brendan Canning's new Something For All Of Us is simultaneously a Broken Social Scene collaboration and a personal retreat. The ambience is allowed to swim alongside the hooks and drift away at will. Canning doesn't seem very interested in smashing those elements together the way Bss did on its self-titled 2005 album and 2002's You Forgot It In People. On "Love Is New" and "Hit The Wall," even the international party-time signal of a throbbing bass becomes another trail into introverted static. Canning's layers don't spill all over each other or lock together, they swirl about with uneven density. Sometimes a horn part or breathy vocal pops right out, and sometimes it only comes to attention after half a dozen listens. Except for "Churches Under The Stairs," which harnesses Bss' pop heroics in a pleasant way, Something For...
