Returning for its fourth year we are proud to present the annual HeyUGuys movie awards – The Truffles.
As each year draws to a close we let our wonderful team of writers loose on the movie landscape to throw plaudits at the great and good and fettered eggnog at those responsible for the bad and cinematically reprehensible.
Here’s our take on the highs and lows of Movietown in 2012.
First up on stage…
Adam Lowes
Best use of CGI: Rust & Bone
It’s always the subtle work which yields the best results. Buoyed by a stunning turn by Marion Cotillard, the CG artists here do a remarkable and flawless job of presenting to the audience what looks like a genuine amputee. The results are shocking, wholly believable and never once distract from the drama.

A hockey team’s goaltender provides its last line of defence, and is one of the most important pieces of any championship-winning puzzle. That’s why the best tenders in the National Hockey League command the big bucks, and raise the ire of their team’s fans whenever things aren’t going right. Granted, when things go well, fans will praise their favourite puck stopper like there’s no tomorrow.

"Safety Not Guaranteed" isn't your typical indie romance. For starters, it's about the possibility of time travel: The film is loosely based on a 2005 classified ad-turned-internet meme posted by a man (played by Mark Duplass) looking for a time travel companion.
"Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke," reads the ad. "You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before."
The plot isn't the only unusual thing about "Safety Not Guaranteed." The indie film's budget was small, but the score, which director Colin Trevorrow compares to one you might find in a blockbuster like "E.T." or "Superman," is full of big sound.
"There are some amazing indie scores, but usually the big themes go to movies that are budgeted at $100 million or more," Trevorrow told HuffPost Entertainment. "'Safety Not Guaranteed...

Bentley pulls one over on Ashley and convinces her that he’s on the show for the right reasons — but at the same time he tells the cameras: ‘I’d rather be swimming in pee than planning a wedding with her!’ Poor Ashley!
Why can’t Bachelorette Ashley Hebert see through Bentley Williams? Instead of listening to her friend and host Chris Harrison about sending Bentley packing, Ashley gives him another rose — the only one to be handed out during the group date — after she begs him to stick around. And typical Bentley goes straight to the cameras and talks crap about poor Ashley out of her ear reach!
“If you feel something for me, please stay, because I feel something for you,” Ashley begs Bentley. “If you feel something for me, please, please, please stick around. Please, please, please.”

The Bachelorette is back, and dare we say it, better than ever?
It's not that this is groundbreaking reality TV. In fact, it's one of the older reality franchises still around. But ABC seems to be embracing its cheesiness, knowing what fans respond to and running all-out with it at this point.
From the deliberate overuse of certain phrases - i.e. "here for the wrong reasons" - to montages introducing our Bachelorette (and her suitors) designed to tug at your heartstrings and blurring the line between reality and scripted drama, the show is hitting its stride once again.
It doesn't hurt that the Bachelorette herself is so much fun.
What a welcome relief from that robotic stiff Brad Womack to see someone so genuine, outgoing and comfortable with herself in the driver's seat. She really is great.
You may find Ashley Hebert a little annoying at times, but she's nothing if not genuine.

It looks like Espn is starting to cater to all the movie geeks out there. I'm not really that into sports, but I like what Espn is doing! If you recall, the magazine recently gave some NBA players a Marvel superhero makeover.
Their next issue, called Movie Spectacular, hits shelves on November 29th, and it features some pretty awesome images of actual sports stars recreating scenes from some of their favorite movies such as Back to the Future, The Hangover, Caddyshack, Anchorman, Pulp Fiction and Basic Instinct. The photos feature some of the biggest names in sports like Danica Patrick, Chad Ochocinco and Lindsey Vonn.
This issue of Espn will have articles about about lesser known movie stars like Chelcie Ross who has had roles in Hoosiers, Rudy and Major League. It's got an article that tells a story of trying to pitch a book in Hollywood and even an...

In recent years life has changed dramatically for Jane Kaczmarek, and the actress is taking those changes in stride.
When asked whether she would ever remarry, Kaczmarek — who split from actor Bradley Whitford in 2009 — appears conflicted.
Having “just” signed divorce papers and calling Whitford the love of her life, she says any decision would be guided by the couple’s three children Frances Genevieve, 13, George Edward, 10, and Mary Louisa, 7½.
“My kids have a great dad,” she continues. “I don’t really want them to have a stepfather and I don’t think they do either. It’s so new.

Zach Parise, Sidney Crosby, and New York Times sports editor Tom Jolly. One wouldn’t think the word “sophisticated” would apply to a party whose guests included a group of guys collectively known for cross-checking each other across the face, punching each other in the head, and slamming each other into ice-rink boards so hard that the glass shatters. But sophisticated was exactly the tone of Vanity Fair’s Tuesday-night party celebrating the rising stars of the N.H.L., which took place at editor Graydon Carter’s Midtown haunt, the Monkey Bar. Among the many puck-heads present and looking extremely dapper in suits: Pittsburg Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, New Jersey Devils winger Zach Parise, Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal, and Montreal Canadiens winger Mike Cammalleri. Sophistication wasn’t completely omnipresent, though, as Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin brought a bit of a Bash Brothers vibe,...

Team U.S.A. hockey goalie Ryan Miller receiving his silver medal. By Luis Acosta/Afp/Getty Images. The tough thing about winning a silver medal in the Olympic ice-hockey tournament is that, unlike the gold- and bronze-medal teams, the second-place team earns its spot on the podium by losing a game. “I don’t know how I’m going to deal with the loss,” Team U.S.A. hockey goalie Ryan Miller told me when I met up with him yesterday in New York City. “I’m still sort of right in the middle of it. I’m going to keep working towards my next goal, which is helping the Buffalo Sabres make the play-offs.” “And this time, silver isn’t bad,” he added, referring to the N.H.L.’s ultimate prize: the Stanley Cup.

You'd think with all the attention being paid in Hollywood to hockey movies of late that hockey was an actual sport people cared about. Oh, sure: Every four years, we pretend to give a shit for a few weeks during the Olympics because when faced with 40 otherwise excruciatingly tedious Winter Olympic sporting events (curling? luge? ice dancing?), hockey actually looks appealing. But then the Olympics end, and the only time I hear about hockey anymore is in Kevin Smith's tweets. You know how many NHL hockey players I can name? Two: Ryan Miller and Sidney Crosby. You know how many NHL hockey players I could name before Sunday? None. And I watch a lot of Espn.
Nevertheless, just weeks after Kevin Smith announced that he'd be following up Cop Out with Somebody Shoot Me in the Head with Seann William Scott (assuming it gets a greenlight and financing), Jay Baruchel...

Your tongue-in-cheek humor delights us early on as only three arms of the Olympic torch raise -- and this time, it's intentional. 2. As we noted this morning, the United States men's Olympic hockey team overcame tremendous odds to defeat Canada by a score of 5-3 yesterday. The U.S. team will now advance to the top seed of the quarterfinals, adding another wrinkle to an already unusual Olympic tournament.
Much of the credit for the unlikely victory goes to goaltender Ryan Miller, whose day job is with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and who racked up 42 saves in a tense and heated match-up. Of course, Miller didn't do it alone: He had support from his able-bodied teammates, as well as a hand from Angus Young and Jared Leto.
Like many elite Olympic athletes, Miller uses music to help get him into the game-time mindset. "It varies, but a lot of the time it's a lot of modern rock mixes," Miller told MTV News in Vancouver. "I've been listening to Kings of Leon for...

It's a great morning for the United States hockey program, as they walked away from their match-up with Canada with a 5-3 victory on Sunday (February 21). Goalie Ryan Miller played an improbably stellar game, and the U.S. now has a bye into the quarterfinal round of the tournament. They'll have to see how the rest of the seeding shakes out, but for now the U.S. is the top seed in an already topsy-turvy Olympic tournament in Vancouver.
It's appropriate that the United States got the win a mere 24 hours before the anniversary of the biggest upset in the history of Olympic hockey. I'm a really huge hockey fan, so yesterday when I got to interview four members of our U.S. Olympic women's and men's hockey teams, I was pretty excited. However, there is one drawback to being a stand out supporter of Team USA Hockey, especially at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Canadians love (and I mean love) their hockey. All the niceness we learned about? Here comes the big asterisk.
