Last week on “So You Think You Can Dance” when the Top 8 performed, I feared that contemporary dancer Benjamin Castro and his hip-hop partner Anna Linstruth were going to be in trouble when it was revealed they were doing a Polynesian routine. Such ethnic choreography –including Bollywood and African — doesn’t always feel authentic when done by those who are not familiar with that style.
Sure enough, the pair had to say goodbye by the end of the episode.
But during Top 8 week there was another equally dicey pitfall that was awaiting contemporary contestant Madison Jordan and her ballroom partner Ezra Sosa — namely, disco. This style of choreography not only can it seem dated but also has so many intricate lifts and spins that dancers have been known to be injured and not just by an overdose of sequins.

“So You Think You Can Dance” saved the best for last when the top 10 women performed on July 23 for 5 coveted spots in the live shows. Jensen Arnold performed a routine that was out of her comfort zone, but the judges thought she was the class of the field. Watch her performance above, and vote in our poll below to let us know what you thought of her.
This final round of cuts at the Academy before the live shows challenged the contestants to dance a routine in a style that wasn’t their specialty. Arnold is a ballroom dancer, so she was challenged with a jazz routine alongside her all-star partner Brandon Bryant (the runner-up in season five), but the judges were so effusive about her “sensational” performance that there was no doubt she would advance to the next round. Read some of the judges’ comments below.

“So You Think You Can Dance” announced its top 20 dancers at the end of “Academy Week” last week, and the 10 men and 10 women who made the cut were overjoyed to be on their way to the live shows … except they weren’t going to the live shows yet. The judges blindsided them by announcing yet another round of cuts that would reduce the top 20 down to the top 10. So the remaining women performed one last time in episode seven on July 23 for a spot in the live shows. So which five advanced, and which five were Thanos-snapped out of existence?
The 10 women who made it this far were Genessy Castillo, Magda Fialek, Jensen Arnold, Stephanie Sosa, Dayna Madison, Sydney Moss, Brianna Penrose, Chelsea Hough, Emily Carr and Hannahlei Cabanilla. For their final challenge to qualify for the live shows, each of them were paired with a “Sytycd” all-star for a...

So You Think You Can Dance fans, I have a dilemma.
For much of Wednesday’s Top 10 performance show — which paired each finalist with an All-Star dancer from seasons past — I couldn’t quite decide whether the Top 10 were put at an advantage or disadvantage by dancing with Sytycd vets.
Take, for example, what I considered tonight’s most entertaining routine: a fun hip-hop number between Jessica Richens and her All-Star companion, Twitch. On her own, Jessica did an excellent job with the fast-paced routine (and started to break away from the idea that she can only excel at jazz...

The show started off with a bang with a fabulous disco from Doriana Sanchez starring Tiffany and all-star Brandon Bryant. Yes they get big points for such a difficult routine and how about that leap-split into his arms? I love that move! Tiffany was full of fire tonight. The Top 10 became 8 this week on So You Think You Can Dance with the first appearance by this season's All-Stars, which included fan faves Nick Lazzarini, tWitch, Brandon Bryant, Allison Holker, Jaimie Goodwin and (finally!) Alex Wong. Along with guest judge Benjamin Millepied (French ballet dancer/choreographer and married to Natalie Portman), judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy were clearly more pleased with the dancers this week after last week's disappointing Mia Michaels' tribute episode. It also probably helped that many of the dances were choreographed by Travis Wall, Nakul Dev Mahajan, Dmitry Chaplin and Emmy nominees Stacey Tookey and Spencer Liff.
AfterElton was backstage after this week's show to get Murphy's take on the show as well as grab a few minutes with the dancers, choreographers and All-Stars.

The So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars returned to dance with the Top 10 contestants Wednesday night — and look who we have here! Season 7 standout Alex Freaking Wong, who exited early because of an Achilles tendon injury and had to sit out last summer, after being invited back as an All-Star, because he’d hurt the Other Achilles tendon. I would guess that Alex Wong’s abs positively loathe his Achilles tendons for denying them their rightful opportunity to glisten on national television whenever possible.

The number of dancers in "So You Think You Can Dance" season 8 has been trimmed to 10 on Thursday, July 14 as two more contestants were sent packing. The unlucky ones were Ryan Ramirez from the girl camp and Alexander Fost from the male pack.
Ryan was in the bottom three with her partner Ricky Jaime, while Alexander dragged along Sasha Mallory to the dangerous zone. The other couple in jeopardy were Melanie Moore and Marko Germar. Before the judges' decision was unveiled, Nicole Scherzinger took the stage to perform.
Another announcement delivered during the result show was the All-Stars. Allison Holker (season 2), Brandon Bryant (season 5), Chelsie Hightower (season 4), Comfort Fedoke (season 4), Kathryn McCormick (season 6), Melody Lacayanga (season 1), Pasha Kovalev (season 3), Robert Roldan (season 7) and Stephen "Twitch" Boss (season 4) will return to the show next week to accompany the top 10.

We haven’t even reached the voting stage for the current installment of So You Think You Can Dance, and I’m about to do something profoundly presumptuous and undeniably stupid: In the wake of Thursday night’s telecast announcing the Season 8 Top 20 — a closely matched group that at first glance appears to be extraordinarily talented — I’ve decided to rest my neck on the guillotine and rank the contestants in order from least- to most-likely to win.

"So You Think You Can Dance" executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe made a stunning announcement on Monday (March 29), outlining the major changes coming to the dance series this season: Not only will there be just 10 finalists chosen in Vegas, but those finalists will be partnered with a new "Sytycd" alum each week of the competition.
Lythgoe promised to reveal which of the show's "all-stars" have signed on to return via Twitter and he wasn't lying.
"I am thrilled that representing the various dance genres of Popping, Locking, Krump etc in the All-Stars Dance-Pool from Season 4 is Twitch," Lythgoe tweeted Tuesday morning.

Last week, Jeanine Mason, a 28-year-old contemporary dancer from Pinecrest, Fl, became America's favorite dancer, winning the "So You Think You Can Dance" title, $250,000 and a cover feature in Dance Feature Magazine. "I just didn't think it could happen." Mason declared in an interview after winning the title. "Brandon Bryant is such a powerful and beautiful dancer, and I admire him so much that I definitely thought he had it. So I was just ready to give him a hug, step back and let him have his moment. So hearing Cat Deeley say my name was so surreal, it was amazing." Mason plans to enter UCLA this fall as a communications major, focusing on both dance and film. Right now, her plan is to only take three classes each semester, so she also has time to audition and follow her dream. But funnily, she also reveals that she wasn't a natural-born dancer.

Did anyone see this one coming? Not until this week, I'm almost certain. For the first half of season five of "So You Think You Can Dance," Jeanine Mason, an 18-year-old contemporary dancer from Florida, was mostly known as the partner of pop-and-locking phenom Phillip Chbeeb. Sure, she's been a lively, funny and strong dancer the whole time — and managed to wow the judges with her hip-hop, tango and jive skills, long before picking her own style more than a month after the season began. That's when, finally, she and partner Jason Glover made jaws drop with a beautiful, sexy performance (complete with lip-lock), choreographed by season-two vet Travis Wall. She showed that she could turn off that quirky, 1,000-watt smile and embody whatever other emotion the dance called for.
Still, it looked like powerful Brandon Bryant or Kayla "White Lightning" "Beautiful Lines" Radomski could do no wrong.

So You Think You Can Dance held its final performance episode Wednesday at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, where the four remaining dancers performed in front of thousands of screaming fans. Two dancers had to leave the "So You Think You Can Dance" floor on Thursday, July 30 night, leaving only four to compete for the title. Ade Obayomi and Melissa Sandvig were eliminated in the eighth week after taking the lowest votes from the judges as well as American audience.
The four finalists thus are Kayla Radomski, Brandon Bryant, Jeanine Mason and Evan Kasprzak. Jeanine was the first to get the ticket to the finale. Thus, Kayla had to fight for her position against Melissa on the solo pieces before she advanced.
Another deliberation revealed that Brandon was through to the finale. Evan and Ade reprised their Wednesday solos but only Evan managed to pass the judges' vote to join Brandon, Jeanine and Kayla in the Top 4. Next week, two will be eliminated, one becomes a runner-up and the ultimate winner will be crowned.

The remaining 6 people of "So You Think You Can Dance" were fighting for their survival on Wednesday, July 29. Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Melissa Sandvig, Evan Kasprzak, Kayla Radomski and Brandon Bryant performed three types of dance: group, pair and solo.
First up was the Top 3 boys group routine choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. It was described as "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and Evan got the praise from guest judge Lil C for not being swallowed in between Ade and Brandon.
The show continued with the first duo of the night, Jeanine and Ade, doing samba choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. The judges generally disliked the routine which was supposed to be sexy and hot. Mary Murphy pointed out that the samba roll failed and it felt novice.
The next couple, Melissa and Evan, performed a Broadway dance to "Get Me to Church on Time". Again, the judges did not...

'So You Think You Can Dance' celebrated its 100th episode with a highly-anticipated performance by Katie Holmes and blasts from seasons past, including three Emmy-winning numbers, but it wasn't all fun and happy memories. Two more season 5 dancers had to go home, and this week, Janette Manrara and Jason Glover received the fewest votes. The results surprised the judges. In an unusual departure, judge Nigel Lythgoe told Janette she was his favorite dancer and one he hoped would win the competition. The other female and male dancers in danger were Kayla Radomski and Brandon Bryant. ...Read more

"So You Think You Can Dance" reached a milestone on Thursday, July 23 with the 100th episode celebration. Katie Holmes appeared as a special guest, paying tribute to Judy Garland by singing and performing "Get Happy". But on top of all the festivity, two dancers have to end their journey.
The special episode started with a Broadway number of "One" from "A Chorus Line". The show then cut the chase and announced which dancers were in the bottom two. In the women side, Janette Manrara was in the bottom two along with judges favorite Kayla Radomski. In the men side, Jason Glover was in the bottom two along with another favorite, Brandon Bryant.
Before the deliberation of who go home, Holmes gave the highly-anticipated performance. Nigel Lythgoe, whose birthday happened to be on that night, told the viewers that Garland's son Joey Luft was among the audience.

On Wednesday, July 22, "So You Think You Can Dance" was visited by a special guest judge who knows little of the dancing techniques but adds a fresh perspective in the art of performing. Ellen DeGeneres, who has been raving about her appearance on the dance show through her Twitter, sat on the judging panel to give comments on the performances of the Top 8.
After reaching the Top 10 stage, the remaining contestants are paired at random. But they got the chance to also dance in the large group and display their solo piece after the pair dancing. The show opener on Wednesday saw former contestant Travis Wall choreographing the group dance which Nigel Lythgoe described as "Very Lady GaGa".
The first couple of the night was Evan Kasprzak and Janette Manrara who danced Jazz. The judges wanted more from Evan, reasoning that he was not rough and 'oomph' enough to balance his partner.

Usually, by this point in the season of "So You Think You Can Dance," there are at least two very clear favorites and then a few dark-horse dancers waiting in the wings. As far as I can remember, past winners Nick Lazzarini, Joshua Allen, Benji Schwimmer and Sabra Johnson won our hearts immediately with their surprisingly wide range of talent and adorable personalities. But when the top 10 performed this week, I was still absolutely stumped about who will win the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
On the other hand, I can't be the only one who knew Hawaiian heartthrob Kupono Aweau and perky cutie Randi Evans were not long for this competition. Kupono's looks aside, he just doesn't match up in physical strength (witness the way he struggled through his lifts in this week's paso doble), and as Nigel Lythgoe said a few weeks ago, he...

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.
Well, last week the show announced its finalists for the new season, and the...

What remains of the bruising grace can make grown men cry. Women, too, in their toughness are not immune. Mary Murphy of So You Think You Can Dance turned stormy eyed during the show's season premiere Thursday after Brandon Bryant's magnetic interpretation of Carl Orff's "O Fortuna." "I have to say that I have the greatest job in the whole world to be able to sit here some days and be able to witness something like that -- something I wouldn't be able to do in a million years, to dance like you," Murphy said, then she wiped her eyes. "You're the kind of person, the kind of dancer that touches millions of people in a few short moves." The championship starved city of Cleveland -- the 1964 Browns brought Clevelanders their last professional sports title -- is...
