It’s been a minute since we checked in on Máximo, old and young, and Las Colinas. Actually, it’s been like 16 months in the real world, which is why it was a wise choice for the “Acapulco” Season 3 trailer to open with the exposition it did.
Máximo (Eugenio Derbez): “Hugo, do you remember where my rags-to-riches life story left off? It all started with a job as Las Colinas. I told you about my big promotion and Julia and I getting together — but there’s still so much more I haven’t told you.”
Smash Cut To: Season 2’s big cliffhanger moment. Oh that’s right, (old) Máximo has a grownup daughter we didn’t even know about. The trailer doesn’t really get into that storyline, but certainly the season will.

It seemed like everything was on track as his mother Nora (Vanessa Bauche) got married, his sister Sara (Regina Reynoso) returned home, and he finally managed to connect with his longtime crush Julia (Camila Perez), but present-day Máximo (Eugenio Derbez) is doesn’t seem to have things so easy. Everyone who was ever going to watch “Ted Lasso” has probably done it already. Somewhere deep in the server room at Apple HQ, there’s probably some algorithm for wringing some extra subset of subscribers out of the phenomenon that “Ted Lasso” has been for audiences and awards voters. It’s the kind of effort that makes you wonder what Apple TV+ would do if they had a show ready to duplicate that kind of success.
Except you don’t have to wonder. They already do.
This week brings Season 2 of “Acapulco,” a comedy that’s been right next to that soccer show on the platform since it premiered last fall. It’s a story told in two parallel tracks. Maximo (Enrique Arrizon) a young starry-eyed employee deals with the day-to-day ups and downs an Acapulco-area tourist resort in the 1980s, while his older self (Eugenio Derbez) narrates each twist...

Apple TV+ is getting ready to transport back in time for the latest chapter of Máximo Gallardo’s (Enrique Arrizon) story in the charming second season of Acapulco, beginning Friday, October 21. Arguably, Mexican film and television superstar Eugenio Derbez has already conquered the American market. His 2013 film “Instructions Not Included” is the highest grossing Spanish-language film in the U.S. and grossed 100 million worldwide. He earned a SAG Award as part of the “Coda” ensemble cast, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, and he co-starred in the hit action-adventure “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.”
However, the attempts to launch him as a romantic leading man — in 2017’s “How to Be a Latin Lover” and 2018’s “Overboard,” a remake of the 1987 comedy — haven’t exactly lit the world on fire, even if they have been profitable.
But if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, and Derbez is back, with “Overboard” writers Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg, starring in and producing Hulu’s “The Valet,” directed by Richard Wong. It’s a remake of the...

It’s a good time to be Eugenio Derbez.
At last week’s Screen Actors Guild awards, “Coda” took home the top prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The film, which features Derbez as choir director “Mr. V,” immediately saw its Oscar buzz skyrocket. Now there’s more good news for Derbez: His Apple TV+ comedy series “Acapulco” has just been renewed for Season 2.
“Acapulco” stars Derbez as the present-day iteration of Maximo Gallardo Ramos, a wealthy man living in Malibu who recounts his rags-to-riches journey to his nephew. Viewers learn that he began his career by working as a pool boy at the Las Colinas Resort in Acapulco, with Enrique Arrizon playing Maximo’s younger self and Erick Saldaña as an even younger Maximo. The bilingual series was loosely inspired by the 2017 Lionsgate film “How to Be a Latin Lover,” which also stars Derbez...

Red jumpsuits, Salvador Dalí masks and the Italian anti-fascist revolutionary anthem “Bella Ciao” are no longer merely elements that comprise the iconoclastic Spanish caper drama “Money Heist.” They’ve managed to bleed out into real life as numerous protesters — from the hit series’ home country to Lebanon, Indonesia and beyond — have infused these motifs with their own fights against government tyranny, corruption and wealth inequality.
“I think people needed a symbol,” creator Álex Pina tells Variety. “We have this show that is presented as a resistance against governments and against institutions, and this combined with the entertainment, went beyond the borders of reality, and people just adopted it. You have these anti-heroes in the show that people actually regard as heroes and they create personal bonds and social and political bonds [with them].”

During the most recent season of MTV’s competition program “The Challenge,” subtitled “Spies, Lies & Allies,” the competitors initially had to work in pairs, despite major language barriers among them.
In these games, veteran players from past seasons of “The Challenge” compete against vets of other series including “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island” from around the world. Everyone must speak at least a little English, casting director Skye Topic says, or it wouldn’t be fair, since host T.J. Lavin gives them the rules of each challenge in English. But because “we envision the show as a place where it’s an intersection of societies,” she says, they are leaning into bringing in global players, including those from Germany, Turkey, Romania, Spain and Nigeria in this season alone.

The Best New TV Series of 2021 — What to Watch for Years to Come, from ‘Acapulco’ to ‘Yellowjackets’
One of the best aspects of television is its ability to tell long-lasting stories. Whether they’re episodic or serialized, TV series invite us to visit again and again, for years on end, as characters grow, stories develop, and ideas proliferate. If you’re lucky, a cherished TV show can last through the awkwardness of adolescence, the glory days of high school, or even mature along with you into middle-age. Not everything has to last that long and all stories must end, but some of the most beloved programs can lull us into believing they never will.
With that unique attribute in mind, IndieWire has assembled the best new series on TV in 2021 — not limited series, not one-and-done specials, and not “six-hour movies”. These are the new shows that you can look forward to watching season after season, for years to come. We’ve got nothing against short-term treats like “Mare of Easttown” and “Maid,...

Technically, “Acapulco” starts at the end. On a sunny, cloudless afternoon in Southern California, Maximo Gallardo (Eugenio Derbez) takes in his view of the Pacific from a sprawling estate. On a day off from his life as a financial mogul, Maximo welcomes his nephew Hugo (Raphael Alejandro) for a relaxing kickback. In celebrating his young relative’s birthday, Maximo regales him with the tale of his own teenage days, working at the luxury Las Colinas resort in Acapulco, Mexico.
As the show judiciously cuts back and forth between present-day and 1984, Maximo slowly introduces his younger self (Enrique Arrizon) amidst a sea of family members and coworkers. Childhood friend Memo (Fernando Carsa) helps him navigate life at Las Colinas, as he pines after hopeless crush Julia (Camila Perez), contends with rivals Hector (Rafael Cebrián) and Chad (Chord Overstreet), and does his best to impress the resort’s manager (Damián Alcázar) and...

When wide-eyed, ambitious Maximo (Enrique Arrizon) looks at the gleaming pink hotel that’s overlooked Acapulco his entire life, he sees opportunities and riches he can’t get anywhere else in his town circa 1984. He sees a way out of poverty, a chance to dream, an escape from the mundane. When his mother (Vanessa Bauche) looks at Las Colinas, however, she sees not just a den of sin, but a nest of sirens that will lure her children away for the superficial glory of serving white tourists who will forget their waitstaff the moment they fall out of view.
In “Acapulco,” a new Apple TV Plus comedy from Austin Winsberg, Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman, the truth lies somewhere in between. As a Las Colinas pool boy, Maximo’s natural instincts and charm quickly make him a hotel staple, which helps him towards his goal of funding his mother’s eye surgery.
