Flawed but promising, Zooey Deschanel shines
1 April 2007
There are certain times when I get a free moment in my schedule that I like to check out something from the movie rental that I've never heard of. Enter "Winter Passing." I immediately noticed Zooey Deschanel's face. She showed promise in the family comedy "Elf" and I thought she would deliver.

She did make a majority of the movie for me. She seemed to help move along the somewhat awkward pacing and added expression in a deadpan environment. All the performances worked. Amelia Warner was perfectly winsome. Will Ferrell, usually known for his spastic, mindless comedy impressed me in a dramatic role. He showed me that he could actually act. Ed Harris is always brilliant, and I thought he should have been given a bit more screen time.

I enjoyed parts of the movie and really couldn't follow other aspects. For Adam Rapp's directorial debut, this is impressive, but I highly doubt that the movie would have done well had it been released to general cinemas. Parts of the movie dragged out. The overall atmosphere was a bit sleepy. The plot line wasn't anything too original. I'm not saying the movie was awful, it was just flawed. It's a movie that makes you think, not necessarily intended for pure enjoyment.
