"A Time For Killing" (also called "The Long Ride Home") isn't one of the best Westerns of all time, nor is it the most memorable, but the 1967 film still comes up in conversation thanks to its unique status as the very first movie role Harrison Ford was ever credited in. Ford played a young, sideburn-wearing Union soldier in the film, which followed the exploits of a group of captured Confederate soldiers on a mad dash for Mexico — none of whom realize the war has officially ended.
Aside from Ford's debut as Lieutenant Shaffer (for which he was credited as Harrison J. Ford), "A Time For Killing" is most noteworthy for its status as an abandoned Roger Corman flick. Corman started making "A Time For Killing" after already churning out cult classics like "A Bucket of Blood" and "The Little Shop of Horrors," but the low-budget filmmaker was replaced by "99 River Street...

“To die, to truly be dead,” Bela Lugosi said in Hollywood’s classic adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, “that must be glorious.” But beloved monsters never die, no matter how many stakes you drive through their hearts. They are rebooted. Following the box office and critical success of The Invisible Man, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse production banner is looking to resurrect Dracula, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While Universal hasn’t officially signed on, they do have a first-look deal with Blumhouse and a cloakroom of capes for the Transylvanian Count.
The new Dracula movie will be helmed by Karyn Kusama. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who teamed with Kusama on those latter two films, will write the screenplay. Kusama also recently directed an episode of HBO’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider.

I have never seen a film in the Fast & Furious franchise so approached the latest release, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, with fresh eyes. I’ve certainly managed to absorb via pop culture osmosis the gist of the series’ evolution and the saturated play of the trailer all spring, certainly got me curious. So, kudos to the trailer’s editor.
While the premise behind the series does little for me, I enjoy a good buddy film and my understanding is that stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Stratham had such different approaches to acting that I was curious to see how well they played together.
This is what we used to call a popcorn film: just enough plot to tie the action sequences together, appealing cast, and lots of things going boom. On those terms, the film works wonderfully and it is rather entertaining.

Arte Johnson, who won an Emmy for his memorable work on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and worked in TV and film for nearly half a century, died early Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, his family said announced. He was 90 and had battled bladder and prostate cancer for the past three years.
Johnson earned three consecutive Emmy noms for Laugh-In from 1969-71, winning the first year. He was part of the politically tinged NBC sketch series’ main cast from its launch in January 1968 until 1971, playing myriad characters in the show that launched the careers of such stars as Lily Tomlin, Goldie Hawn, Eileen Brennan, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley and many others.
Among his most popular characters was Wolfgang, a cigarette-smoking German soldier who believed that World War II was still ongoing, as he scouted the show while hidden behind bushes. He would then invariably comment on the preceding sketch...

Boy howdy, people were sure digging vampires by the end of the ‘70s, weren’t they? Back in vogue, 1979 alone brought Frank Langella as a very sensuous Dracula, George Hamilton with a humorous take in Love at First Bite, Werner Herzog’s retelling of Nosferatu, and Tobe Hooper’s bone-chilling Stephen King miniseries adaptation, Salem’s Lot. There was another small screen vamp to appear that year no one talks about however and that’s ABC’s Vampire, a generically branded thriller that works due to some heavy Richard Lynch lifting as the titular doomed creature.
Originally broadcast on October 7th as The ABC Sunday Night Movie, Vampire had to contend with Alice/The Jeffersons and Trapper John, M.D. on CBS, and NBC’s The Big Event, their dumping ground for specials and TV flicks. And while it doesn’t hold a cross to any of the above entries,...

Director Curtis Harrington always offered up solid, unassuming genre fare on the small screen (How Awful about Allan, the wonderfully goofy Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell); and when he collaborated with noted scribe Robert Bloch (Psycho), the result was NBC’s The Dead Don’t Die (1975), an effective throwback to the Lewton/Turneur era beloved by both, shot through with a big dose of pulpy goodness.
Originally broadcast on January 14th as an NBC World Premiere Movie, Tddd didn’t stand a chance against the likes of the ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week or the ironclad CBS lineup of M*A*S*H/Hawaii Five-o, and Bloch is on the record as not being a fan. Oh well; I still dig its entertaining mashup of neo noir and old fashioned zombies even if he doesn’t. And you might too if that particular elixir peaks your interest.

TV horror lives and dies by the pen. From the ‘50s to the ‘90s, network TV shows and movies simply couldn’t carry the weight of special effects, and the content restrictions placed on TV (before the advent of cable, I’m talking the Big Three – ABC, CBS, NBC) back in the day did not allow for the most part a visceral experience. (Oh how times have changed.) So often the tale itself would have to suffice, and if it was gripping enough, blood speckled walls and torn limbs weren’t even necessary. Case in point: The Strange Possession of Mrs. Oliver (1977), an NBC Monday Night at the Movies written by none other than Richard Matheson, starring Karen Black.
Premiering Monday, February 28th, 1977, Strange’s beat down would come at the hands of ABC’s Monday Night Movie (I just love the creative monikers), which regularly trounced any and all comers in that time slot.

Summer just officially started just a few days ago, so Halloween is months away. Perhaps a great way to get us cooled off, to put us in a Fall state of mind, would be to pay a visit to one of the oldest horror movie icons: the vampire. Everyone’s aware of how scary those fanged fiends can be, but you may have forgotten how funny they are (intentionally, of course). Movie audiences have emitted nervous laughter ever since Max Schreck emerged from the shadows in the silent classic Nosferatu. And certainly there are bits (and bites) of humor (mostly comic relief supporting players) in 1931’s Dracula and Mark Of The Vampire, both with Bela Lugosi. It wasn’t until 1948 that he was in an all out farce (though the Count is never lampooned) in Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein. After Hammer Studios brought back (in full gory color) the bloodsuckers ten years later,...

Today, more than ever, with our shortened attention spans, inundation by multi-media delivery systems, and almost obsessive need for instant information, it is easy to forget the wonderful actors of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s who inspired and influenced us. So many great moments created by sometimes iconic performers live on in the movies and television of certain eras. From Mr. Spock to Archie Bunker, Annie Hall to James Bond, or Mrs. Peel to Lieutenant Columbo, these and other memorable characters fueled everything from fashion choices to sexual fantasies. That’s why the new...

In its premiere, American Horror Story: Hotel went for the jugular, serving up everything from a blood-soaked foursome to an eyeless monster with a drill-bit dildo. But did it deliver shock and awe or shock and “eh”? Read on, then we’ll discuss.

'Hotel Transylvania 2.' 'Hotel Transylvania 2' far surpasses expectations at domestic box office: Adam Sandler a hit when heard but not seen Adam Sandler has been having his share of domestic box office flops lately. Chris Columbus' Pixels, which opened in late July to scathing reviews and indifferent audiences, was the latest one: a reported $88 million production (plus marketing and distribution expenses) that earned $76.67 million in the U.S. and Canada (plus an estimated $145.1 million elsewhere). But now comes the Sony Pictures release Hotel Transylvania 2, the concisely titled sequel to the late Sept. 2012 hit Hotel Transylvania. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the $80-85 million-budgeted animated feature should open around $48 million from 3,754 theaters according to early weekend box office estimates found at Deadline.com. The report adds that some “rival studio box office analysts” believe Hotel Transylvania 2 may actually pass the $50 million mark. On Friday, Sept. 25, '15, it collected a better than expected (estimated) $13.5 million.

As a kid, you can’t be picky where you find your fix of sci-fi and horror. Sometimes it’s the big screen, but often (for me, anyway) it was that living room landmark, television. I remember being seven and watching a Western where a couple of guys are on vacation at a resort where you can be a cowboy and have gunfights with androids (Sci-Fi, sweet!). And then…bad things start to happen. The androids break down, and now they’re killing the guests (ooh, Horror!). My head reeled from this magical swirl, a mesh of circuitry and chaos. Welcome to Westworld (1973), and its parent resort, Delos. Their slogan: Have we got a vacation for you.
This was a pretty good year for Sci-Fi. Soylent Green made a splash (“It’s Peeoople!!!”), the latest installment in the Apes franchise, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, and Woody Allen...

The Walking Dead is back and already in my nightmares. (If your sleep is too sound, try adding in some flaming zombies. That’ll keep you tossing and turning for sure.) To celebrate, or synergize, the Hero Complex Gallery is hosting a show of officially liensed Walking Dead-themed art with contributions from a bunch of Poster Posse members. And, of course, it is up to the usual standard of awesomeness. All of them are fantastic, but I am partial to Samuel Ho’s All We Do Is Run! and Glen Brogan’s* Love at First Bite because I have realized that I want the show to end with Glenn and Maggie safe and happy on some compound where they have a million babies. When (spoiler!) that dude with the baseball bat kept getting interrupted just before he knocked out Glenn, I was dying.

The vampire sub-genre can be as dark and foreboding as the basement of a Transylvanian castle, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be navigated with a well-lit lantern of laughs. Today, the folks at Scream Factory ushered in October with the announcement that they are bringing the vampire comedies Love at First Bite and Once Bitten to Blu-ray for the first time.
Scream Factory plans to release 1979’s Love at First Bite and 1985’s Once Bitten to Blu-ray sometime around Valentine’s Day 2015, so take note if you’re already looking for date night movies. The year 1979 was a good one for vampires, cinematically speaking. John Badham's version of "Dracula" premiered starring Frank Langella in the film version of his Broadway hit, George Hamilton had a surprise success with the spoof "Love At First Bite" and German director Werner Herzog unveiled his remake of the classic German silent horror movie "Nosferatu: The Vampyre". The original version by director F.W. Murnau is still regarded by many as the greatest horror movie ever made. Indeed, the mere sight of the film's star Max Schreck (who was as eerie in real life as he was on screen) is enough to give you nightmares. Herzog's version was not only the best of the vampire films released in 1979, it is a fitting homage to the Murnau classic. Working with a relatively extravagant budget, Herzog produced a film that is eerie and unsettling. He refrains from going for quick shocks,...

While variations on the Dracula legend are among the most oft-told tales in movies and television, some stand out from the pack.
Dracula, the name is legendary. The First Vampire of both literature and film, he also rose to dominate pages of history. Dracula has been vilified for years. Vlad Tepes is painted as a cruel tyrant who impaled people who defied him, nailed hats onto the heads of monks who didn’t deify him, and who dipped his bread in the blood of armies defeated by him.
Cruel? Maybe. But not when you remember that after Spartacus’ slave rebellion was put down, Rome lined miles of roads with crucified dissidents. There was no internet back then and when you wanted to send a message you had to make it big. The Turks knew enough not to fuck with Vlad the Impaler or they’d get a...

To celebrate the release of the gruesomely brilliant Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (check out our review here) on DVD and Blu-ray, we’ve taken a look at the all-time top 5 movie vampire hunters.

This story first appeared in the Oct. 5 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The Jan. 17, 1980, issue of The Hollywood Reporter was full of ads promoting that year's Oscar hopefuls -- everything from eventual winners like Kramer vs. Kramer to crazy long shots like George Hamilton courting consideration as best actor for his campy turn in the vampire comedy Love at First Bite. Amid all the hoopla, it was probably easy to overlook one relatively unassuming, full-page, black-and-white display ad announcing a new movie called Argo, described only as "A Cosmic Conflagration … commencing principal photography,

Huh. Okay. Maybe we’re just used to the slender, sparkly hotties of the Twilight series, but Russell Crowe would not have been our first pick to play Dracula. Obviously director Eli Roth would beg to differ, seeing as how he’ll allegedly be directing the Robin Hood actor as the blood-sucking count in the upcoming horror action movie Harker. Then again, Russell certainly isn’t the first vampyre curveball Hollywood has hurled at the audience’s befuddled faces:

This column contains possible spoilers from the new Tim Burton film "Dark Shadows." The first science-fiction-related parody I recall experiencing was "Superduperman" by Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood in the fourth issue of Mad. I.ve read or watched many others over the years, including "Quark," the Adam West "Batman" series, "Love at First Bite," "Young Frankenstein," "Galaxy Quest" and Seth Rogen.s "The Green Hornet." Evidently I belong to the target audience for this type of material, and I proved it again last weekend by catching Tim Burton.s send-up of "Dark Shadows." Parts of Burton.s movie are hilarious and parts fall flat, and that got me thinking about what works in this kind of story and what doesn.t. As usual, this is a topic I can.t discuss without tossing in some spoilers. ...

The trailer for Tim Burton's big-screen version of Dark Shadows has hit the web, and it's raising some hackles among true believers (like myself). What we all hoped would be an atmospheric chiller looks to be a madcap comedy, and not a funny one.
As a long-time fan of the original Dark Shadows, I've been following this project pretty closely. When Johnny Depp persuaded Burton to come aboard as director, I was excited. Burton was a monster kid and dedicated Dark Shadows fan with the chops and temperament to do justice to one of my childhood favorites.
When Burton filled his cast with names such as Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earl Haley, Chloë Moretz and Christopher Lee, I was even more excited. These are great actors who consistently do good work.

I think it’s fair to say that there is a little bit of fear in the air surrounding Tim Burton’s upcoming Dark Shadows. This fear does not stem from the ghastly sight of vampire Barnabus Collins; though that debate does rage on regarding the art department’s choice of make-up design. However this fear does come from the fact that Not One single teaser trailer or clip has been released as of yet from the film which is set to come out on May 11. This is almost somewhat unheard of in Hollywood. Months are typically devoted to marketing a film to raise the hype meter and to gather a fanbase who is familiar with the story, characters, and look of a film. Given the absence of footage from what is clearly an anticipated film for our readers and Tim Burton fans around the world, it brings me some...

Hollywood veteran George Hamilton is playing down reports suggesting he's secretly battling cancer, insisting he is just suffering "a little skin damage".
The National Enquirer claims the famously-tanned actor, 72, was recently diagnosed with the disease and allegedly underwent surgery in New York last month to remove cancerous cells on his ear and forehead.
But Hamilton is said to have encountered further health troubles as he recovered from the operation and was taken by ambulance to the Big Apple's Lenox Hill Hospital on 30 July to treat a popped suture.
A source tells the publication, "He was bleeding profusely... He spent four days in the hospital and was released."
However, the surgery is thought to have been a success and the Love at First Bite star will not require further intensive treatment.
The insider adds, "Doctors say he will not need chemotherapy or radiation and should recover well."
Hamilton has since returned to work, rehearsing for an upcoming U.S. tour of hit Broadway musical La Cage aux Folles.
A spokesperson for Hamilton says, "It's true, George did have medical procedure to deal with some skin damage, but nowhere as serious or dramatic as Enquirer reports. They do tend to exaggerate."...
