This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of True Detective: Night Country, now available on HBO and Max.
When the first True Detective season concluded 11 years ago, a lot of the finale discourse revolved around the lack of any supernatural elements after the previous episodes had been laced with references to Robert W. Chambers’ horror stories about the King in Yellow. Veteran screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and Jonathan Demme’s “Melvin and Howard,” died Tuesday at the age of 90, his son-in-law, director Todd Field told The New York Times on Wednesday.
Goldman landed the job of adapting Ken Kesey’s book (along with Lawrence Hauben) after his script for “Shoot the Moon” impressed “Cuckoo’s Nest” director Miloš Forman.
Danny DeVito, who had a small role in “Cuckoo’s Nest,” told TheWrap, “Working with Bo was a dream. It was an honor knowing him.”
After winning a second Oscar for “Melvin and Howard,” he became one of the few screenwriters — along with Francis Ford Coppola and Billy Wilder — to take home Academy Awards for both original and adapted screenplay. He was nominated a third time for his script for Martin Brest’s “Scent of a Woman.”

Screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for his scripts to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Melvin and Howard” and was among a select group of film scribes including Robert Towne and William Goldman considered to be among that generation’s best, died Tuesday in Helendale, Calif., his son-in-law, director Todd Field, confirmed to the New York Times. He was 90.
Goldman was also Oscar nominated for 1993’s “Scent of a Woman.”
The 1976 Oscar he shared with Lawrence Hauben for co-adapting Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a particularly impressive achievement considering that “Cuckoo’s Nest” represented only Goldman’s second screenplay and the first to be produced. The win for adapted screenplay was part of a sweep for the film that also included victories for best picture, director, actor and actress. Bo Goldman, the late-blooming guru of screenwriting who received Academy Awards for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Melvin and Howard, has died. He was 90.
Goldman died Tuesday in Helendale, California, his son-in-law, director Todd Field, told The New York Times.
Goldman’s first screenplay was, years after he wrote it, directed by Alan Parker for Shoot the Moon (1982), which featured Diane Keaton and Albert Finney in a raw, seriocomic drama about a disintegrating marriage.
He also co-wrote the Mark Rydell-directed rock drama The Rose (1979), starring Bette Midler in an Oscar-nominated turn, and Martin Brest’s Scent of a Woman (1992), which netted him his third Academy Award nom (and Al Pacino the best actor Oscar, too).

Consummate character actor who came close to stardom in the 70s with roles in Apocalypse Now, The Conversation and The Rose
“He’d kill us if he got the chance.” Those words, spoken by a bespectacled, beige-suited young man (Frederic Forrest) as he wanders through Union Square in San Francisco with his lover (Cindy Williams), are secretly recorded by the surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) in The Conversation (1974). Their meaning, mulled over at length, becomes vital in unlocking the story’s mysteries. One of the key thrillers of its decade, Francis Ford Coppola’s film was also an eloquent expression of paranoia in a country reeling from Watergate.
Forrest, who has died aged 86, was the ideal actor to throw certainties into doubt. In The Conversation, he is bookish, furtive and opaque. The audience never becomes properly acquainted with him, though recordings of his voice and image are repeatedly offered...

The Laffertys were a well-known Mormon family with many adult sons, and Garfield's Det. Pyre is also Mormon and knew of the family before the crime.

Ti West's new horror movie, "X," hits theaters nationwide on March 18. The film stars Mia Goth, Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Owen Campbell, and Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) as a ragtag group of filmmakers in 1979 looking to shoot a porn film on an old couple's farm, without the owners knowledge. However, that old couple - Howard (Stephen Ure) and Pearl and Ortega (Lorraine) are the last two members of the group standing after everyone else has been killed off in brutal ways. Lorraine is trapped in the couple's basement, while Maxine hides under her bed in the guest house. However, Maxine's hiding place turns out to be the wrong choice. Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” continued its unstoppable run at the box office with a third weekend as the box office champ with an estimated $36.8 million, just getting to $300 million in North America in rapid time. The only movie to make that amount in all of 2021 was “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” so it’s a good sign that movies are starting to rebound. The Robert Pattinson comic book vehicle has made roughly the same amount overseas, although its release in China quickly fizzled out this past week.

Ti West made his name directing nimbly paced throwbacks to horror films of old, from his haunted house breakthrough “The House of the Devil” to his found footage film “The Sacrament.” But after directing six horror films in a row, with very few breaks in between, he decided to take some time off to make sure he didn’t start repeating himself.
While on his break from horror filmmaking, during which he directed for TV shows such as “Scream,” and “Tales From the Loop,” he thought about making a pure slasher film, something he hadn’t done before. Trying to find his own unique spin on the subgenre, he decided to make slasher film about people making a film. He wasn’t interested in making an overly meta piece about shooting a horror movie, so he eventually settled on a close counterpoint to his favorite genre: porn.

Diehard horror movie fans of the past 15-odd years may have started wondering what happened to Ti West. The meticulous genre filmmaker blended exacting formalism with shock and terror across a range of unnerving experiences: Everything from “The Roost” to “Trigger Man,” or “The House of the Devil” to “The Innkeepers,” had their fans, but no two movies were alike. Then, after the strange curveball of his zany Western “In the Valley of the Violence,” West stopped directing movies six years ago.

Stars: Mia Goth, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, Owen Campbell, Kid Cudi, Stephen Ure | Written and Directed by Ti West
Writer-director Ti West consolidates his reputation as one of America’s best horror filmmakers with this terrific ’70s-set slasher that plays like Boogie Nights meets The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, only without the titular implement. Tense, erotic and perversely playful, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
Set in 1979, X opens in Texas, where hustler-producer Wayne (Martin Henderson) has hired a remote farm cottage in order to film an independent porn movie with his girlfriend Maxine (Mia Goth), ambitious director-cinematographer Rj (Owen Campbell), sound recordist Lorraine (Jenna Ortega) and uninhibited co-stars Bobby-Lynne (Brittany Snow) and Jackson (Kid Cudi). However, the creepy elderly couple who own the barn haven’t been informed of Wayne’s intentions and they soon make their presence felt.
West’s direction is exceptional throughout.

Get ready for a new horror franchise, because Ti West's "X" is getting a prequel! The film was shot in secret in New Zealand and is currently in pre-production, and the first footage for "Pearl" was unveiled last night after the world premiere of "X" at the SXSW film festival.
This news is significant in a few ways. For one, "X" marks Ti West's first horror movie in almost a decade, so the fact that he's not stopping at one film makes this special. Second, the prequel is set to center round the rise of a female horror villain (and a fantastic one...

Ti West was so eager to get back to directing movies that, a few weeks before shooting his new one, he wrote another one in quarantine and shot it in secret. That was “Pearl,” the prequel to “X,” which A24 releases this week. “X,” a ’70s-set slasher movie that marks the genre filmmaker’s first feature in seven years, premiered at SXSW over the weekend with a surprise teaser for “Pearl” that announced the next chapter in a very unexpected new franchise, and West told IndieWire he had a possible third movie on the way.
“I’m trying to build a world out of all this, like people do these days,” he said in an interview ahead of the SXSW announcement. “You can’t make a slasher movie without a bunch of sequels.”

For years I’ve said that “The Dark Knight” is the one great comic-book movie. The films you might consider to be runners-up — “Spider-Man 2,” “Superman II,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” — are splendid entertainments, but none of them earn the G-word. Not really. “The Dark Knight,” though, had an operatic grandeur fused with a creeping noir dread merged with a conspiratorial intricacy that added up to a true vision of the world. It also had a snazziness — that big-wheel Batpod! — that just about popped off the screen. At the time, the film wasn’t just “dark” but resonantly dark. It seemed about as elaborate and exciting as a comic-book movie could be.
Christopher Nolan, staging it all with a foreboding big-canvas flair, made Batman the gothic nihilist antihero he always was in spirit — a vigilante steeped in rage, at the end of his bat tether. Yet as perfect as Christian Bale was in the role,...

Oscar-winning producer and influential motion picture executive Alan Ladd Jr., who ushered in the “Star Wars” era of motion pictures, died Wednesday. He was 84.
“With the heaviest of hearts, we announce that on March 2, 2022, Alan Ladd, Jr. died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed. His impact on films and filmmaking will live on in his absence,” his daughter Amanda Ladd-Jones, who directed the documentary “Laddie: The Man Behind the Movies,” wrote on the film’s Facebook page.
During his tenure at 20th Century Fox in the late 1970s, Ladd greenlit “Star Wars,” a $10 million sci-fi film that would become the yardstick for blockbuster movies and tentpole film franchises thereafter. He was the son of golden age film star Alan Ladd, best remembered for “Shane,” but in many ways, Ladd Jr. had a more substantial effect on Hollywood than did his famous dad.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell Productions has issued a statement on the current controversy over Spotify and alleged misinformation the platform is disseminating on Covid-19 issues.
The couple’s Archewell Productions claimed they have expressed their concerns about misinformation to Spotify as far back as last April, and asked for action. Today’s statement did not mention podcaster Joe Rogan, whose show on the service has been at the heart of recent attention, or specifically what constituted the alleged misinformation that raised the Archewell concerns.
Musicians Neil Young and Joni Mitchell last week asked to withdraw from the streaming service because of its association with Rogan, whose talk show sometimes offers guests with alternative views on the pandemic and vaccinations. Today, they were joined in withdrawal land by Bruce Springsteen guitarist Nils Lofgren, with more musicians reportedly pondering an exit.
