Timeless. Holds up pretty good
dawnsacks-0157815 September 2019
It is 2019. Just watched an episode of it and laughed and laughed and laughed. Some of the comedy of past years does not hold up i.e. welcome back Kotter. I think what makes the show go over so well is the amazing performance by Fran Drescher. She is so hilarious. The kids are really good and the banter between Niles and CJ is priceless. Give it another shot it's pretty good

Fran Drescher can't be more charming
emmanuelgzz-9092614 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This show is too colorful to be missed. The chemistry of everyone on the set and their amazing comedic timing makes this show delightful (specially Fran Drescher's and her a superb physical comedy skills) and the jokes never grow tired. Even it's pathetic antagonist is portrayed by an incredibly talented actress to play her character in such cartoonish yet classy way without being overboard or despicable, she throws witty shade and speaking of which, the butler gets some scenes with her, back and forth, throwing insults and is hilarious! I think, had this show extended the relationship between two characters for one or two seasons then the show would have ended on a higher note but 6 seasons were enough and I love each one of them.

In 2021, still watchable and funny.

For me this is a great show. I think they have to do a special episode for 2021, because I wonder what happened the family and Fran. Every character is so unique and funny. Clothes of Fran is also very cool for 90s. I really enjoyed and highly recommend to watching.

I watched this show growing up and missed on a lot of the humour. Now, in my mid thirties this show is purely genius.

Funny, Charming Series
Enrique-Sanchez-5611 November 2002
I thought the "there's something delightful about poking fun at being Jewish" was at the center of Fran's charm. You couldn't help but love her every step of the way.

Probably the best aspect of this series was that as a comedy, other series take themselves so seriously.

Not with Fran Drescher's THE NANNY. Fran knew exactly how far to push her lovable kitschy style and always kept it in check with her timing and sexy panache. The show concluded at the right time in the course of the series. By golly, you've got to give them credit for knowing when to stop. So many shows are run into the ground and the endings are hastily wrapped up. Not so with this program. The last episode was warmly sad for we devoted fans of this show. But it was done just right...just when you thought the time for the credits was approaching...through tears in your eyes....came out Grandma.

There were several characters which have been mentioned before in other reviews; all of which I loved...but by far the best was ANN GUILBERT as the grandmother. Her comic timing, her gentle way with her character, her facial expressions were so priceless reminds me now of how my own mother is advancing in her years. It is disappointing that she was not nominated for an Emmy for this series. Perhaps her part was not large enough. But oh, what she did with those precious minutes. It harkens back to those wonderful days when she was Millie Helper, Rob and Laura Petrie's quirky and nosy neighbor on the Dick Van Dyke Show. What a talent this women has given us!

Thank you, Ann....and thank you, Fran for choosing her to play this part. You are still sorely missed one and all. Thank goodness for syndication!

I never say no to reruns of it.
m-478268 October 2020
It's funny and sometimes witty, but as you grow older, you realize how unsympathetic these characters can be. Purposely or not. It used to be my favorite show as a kid, alongside Step by Step, only it was because I was too young to fully understand it. Now I see characters for what they really are, and I don't like it. I still enjoy episodes once in a while, especially those involving the nanny's family, and I love hearing those Niles and CC digs. But another thing I realized recently, was how the show lost its appeal, once the courtship ritual between Fran and Maxwell come full circle. And their little flirting sessions, got creepy and unprofessional, on several occasions.

Both did and didn't age well
memissobsession20 December 2023
Watched it for the first time in 2023. It's very weird to watch hints to low key DV and the glorification of the ditsy clueless marriage desperate woman.

That being said, the first 3 seasons are brilliant. The comedy is really high quality and the characters and plots are addictive. The issues are still relevant and relatable.

Something goes wrong from the 4th season on, the comedy starts lacking, some jokes get old and Fran's relationship drama is so cringe it's painful to watch.

Other notable pluses: her outfits are iconic and lovely. The dynamic between the characters in the first 3 seasons is heartwarming.

Overall mixed feelings on this one.

This show taught me to speak english!
daria8421 April 2003
That's right, it might sound stupid or crazy, but I learned english only by watching this show with subtitles! I Which means, I love this show! I loved it so much that I taped it and watched them over and over again, it's awesome. It's so hilarious and it really sux that it's over...

Just think about "The Sound of Music" same plot, different place, time and situations, all of them hilarious! Fran Drescher does an outstanding job as Fran, and the rest of the cast are equally good, especially Daniel Davis and Lauren Lane, As Niles and CC. Charles Shaughnessy is good too as Mr Sheffield. And how can I forget about Renee Taylor (Sylvia), Rachael Chagall (Val) and Ann Gilbert (Yetta), they totally steal the show :)

This sit-com is so good, that they even had tons of great guests, such as Liz Taylor, Rossie O'Donell, Elton John, Coolio, etc..... Anyways if you like light comedy and if you are not annoyed by Fran's voice, this is a must see comedy! ***** out of *****

An under rated sitcom from the 90's
Dust_in_it_off2 October 2021
The one liners from Fran Dresser as Ms. Fine are classic 90's sitcom. Thank you HBO max for the trip down memory lane. For those who have never seen The Nanny, it's worth the watch. The theme song tells you everything you need to know about the show. Excerpt below:

She was working in a bridal shop in Flushing Queens Til her boyfriend kicked her out in one of those crushing scenes.

What was she to do? Where was she to go? She was out on her fanny.

So over the bridge from Flushing to the Schefields door, she was there to sell makeup but the father saw more... She had style! She had flair! She was there!

That's how she became the nanny.

30 yrs later... & I still love it!
nlk878 August 2023
Funny show! 2 thumbs up! Niles & Grandma Yeta, always makes you laugh in every episode you see them in! Drives me nuts when people say they don't watch it because of Fran Drescher's voice... That's when I say that she was the star in her own show, & they never will.. People like that lost their sense of humor up there with that stick that's still up there.. ;) The show did however drag Mr. Sheffields & Frans "flirting stage" way too long. & after us fans FINALLY got what we all were waiting for, S5 EP22 "The Wedding" the show lost something. Ironically weird! & the last season, I didn't like how they ended it. Moving to L. A.

Nanny vs I love Lucy
smoopie850021 October 2007
I often thought "I love Lucy" was in a class of its own and could not be touched. Then came the Nanny, the way Fran uses her face and the way she got caught up in a silly moment and got in more trouble to get out of it .... is classic Lucy. Brava to the writers producers and actors for making such a clean fun loving show. I want it back. My new family is growing up. It would be sad for them not to be able to see such good shows. I would only hope that another Lucy Nanny type show will come back. With all the reality going on good TV is hard to find anymore. This show brings back some good times. It brings back some really good laughs. I watch it anytime it is on. And by the way I loved her voice.

Nostalgic of the 1990's
isabellacatgirl8 January 2022
My only gripe with The Nanny is that I find the humor on this show kinda corny, and not very funny. I have not watched a single episode lately that has made me LOL hard like Seinfeld has. Other than that it's a fun watch more due to 90's nostalgia imo. I love her 90s outdated outfits, and the whole 90s vibe is cool. Kinda like a white people's version of Fresh Prince of Bel Air,but not as funny though. I'm also white but the humor of this is rather cringey, unfunny, and jokes seems more geared towards old Jewish grandmas. Her laugh can be grating at times also. Definitely more of a family show. That's not bad but wish the writers could have been more funny..

Most Annoying Worst Show Ever
thescribe71 January 2015
The Nanny mostly consists of utterly terrible "jokes" that are punch in the groan literal worthy. That sums it up. Nothing more needs to be said. Shows are about escaping and getting to know people. People want to watch shows that make them feel smart, happy or relatable. The Nanny poses as one of the worst characters that could be conceived. The laugh track makes you want to get boozed up.

Why would somebody subject themselves to a show that makes them feel like the biggest dumbass? This isn't much of a review because this isn't much of a show. A show is supposed to be entertaining but there is nothing to speak of here.

Quite funny!!
SkippyDevereaux8 December 2004
I never watched this show when it was on network television--I don't really know why, but, as of this comment, it is on the Lifetime Network and that is where I watch the show. I initially thought I would watch one episode, then never watch it again. How wrong I was on that one!! Okay, that nasal voice of Fran Drescher may irritate some, but heck, it works for the character and besides, that is her real voice. The entire cast was great all throughout the series, except the oldest daughter. For some reason, her character was the worst of the lot.

Renee Taylor was especially funny, as it seemed Sylvia was always eating or thinking about food and Ann Morgan Guibert was superb as Yetta. It is hard to imagine that this is the same woman who was "Millie" on "The Dick Van Dyke Show"!! I read somewhere that this show was the 90's version of "I Love Lucy" and in a way, I can see the comparisons. Wish the powers that be would release this show on DVD.

Never laughed harder
baunacholi-8615922 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Than seeing the nanny! What a beautiful, charming, witty, clever, refreshing, timeless, non pc related show. To simply call the nanny funny or comedy wouldn't do justice. The nanny is zeitgeist, pure 90's, iconic. I still use phrases from their together with my friends. Insider jokes like ...please, I'm exhausted! Or ...these days are over, you sit here right with us. I could go on like this forever - there're countless running gags - and it will never get dated or boring. Mrs Fine is simply amazing.

PS. If u wanna see guest stars like Mrs. Monica Seles, Dame Joan Collins or even Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor in witty and different roles don't look any further.

Actually love this show, but there's a BUT...
cmelaniesenf27 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love this show! Every time I rewatch it, it keeps reminding me how I tried to watch every episode on tv back in the day when the series first aired in my country. What would we all do without Amazon and Netflix? They safe us so much time... Anyway, as I did watch the show multiple times now I have to say, that they should've ended it with season 5. Why? Because if there was a drinking game for every time Max and Fran say Darling to each other you'd be dead from alcohol poisoning. It's totally annoying me. Season 6 feels so rushed and not as natural. They tried so hard for every character to get a happy ending, that it was getting annoying. At least for me. Maggie for example was 22 (?) why did she have to marry? And what about all these pregnancies? C.C.'s age wasn't mentioned but as she has been working for Max since the late 70s she must've been in her late 40s. So what? Wasn't it political correct back in the 90s to live together without kids and or marriage? Come on! But it still is a good show. And if you ignore all the mistakes as we should, it's still enjoyable.

Grace, Comedy, and Values
ZombieGirlORV24 July 2021
Seeing this show on HBOMax I remembered watching it as a kid and got all nostalgic. I put it on for my kids and they were instantly hooked. We ended up watching a little of it each day and on movie night I was about to put on the Matrix, when the kids asked if they could watch The Nanny instead. This show represents everything that was right with television. Deep moral lessons brought about with comedy and grace. While teasing at tropes it never ceased to be completely original. It broke through barriers, fulfilling values in marriage, friendship, and family which other shows often lack to their own detriment. Having watched all six seasons with my kids, we all agree it is one of the best shows in the history of television. We hope to find more like it in the future.

Sitcom with the trappings of a continuing story.
mark.waltz15 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
While never a ratings winner, this campy sitcom has become a favorite in re-runs and those who didn't watch it in its original run are getting a treat now, even if regretting that they didn't make time for it back then. I'm one of those who watched it on occasion, yet now I'm a proud owner of the DVD collection, finally complete (as of today!), even though the first three seasons, on another label, had not initially sold all that well. What put people off the show when it first aired? Could it be the voice of Fran Drescher? So deliciously nasal, today it's endearing simply because her character was so sweet, almost drag queen like in her wardrobe and certainly a gay man trapped in a Jewish woman's body. So not only has this gained a gay cult following, it's also opened non-Jews to learning a thing or two about their culture. If it wasn't studying the language of "Fiddler on the Roof" through Broadway history books, it was this T.V. series, even more than Saturday Night Live's "Coffee Talk" which was "just like butta". I still shock my Jewish friends by utilizing lingo from this show to which they can only reply, "Good goy. Good goy."

Perhaps also it is the gay mentality or the New York setting that kept the audience limited. Perhaps, even, it's far too show business (Broadway) in orientation with stage producer Maxwell Sheffield (the handsome Charles Shaugnessy) constantly utilizing inside jokes that only Broadway freaks (like myself!) could understand. In the very first episode, he rejects an audition by none other than Carol Channing, and in another episode comments on actors who turned down a musical he's producing ("Ann Miller passed, Ruby Keeler passed, away I think", he says in reflection), and constantly comments on his rival Andrew Lloyd Webber who at the Tony Awards is heard (obviously an actor unseen playing him) trying to say his name as a nominee yet coughing until Maxwell bursts out in disgust. Fran, too, is a total Barbra Streisand fan, blinds Liza Minnelli with her camera at the Tony's, and gets chased around the Sheffield house by Bette Midler. References to other celebrities of a gay cult following are constantly dropped, and as Maxwell and Fran fall in love, they even get to be serenaded by none other than Eartha Kitt. Channing, Midler and Kitt did indeed make guest appearances, and the masked celebrity Maxwell is hiding from Fran is allegedly Cher, although you only hear her voice.

Initially, this was about Fran building a relationship with her charges, Maxwell's three children, but as the series went on, it began to include more of Fran's own family: her always eating mother Sylvia (Renee Taylor) and the slightly senile but totally lovable Grandma Yetta (Ann Guilbert), with guest appearances by Tony Winning musical character actress Marilyn Cooper as her other grandmother, Roseanne as tacky decorator cousin, and eventually Steve Lawrence as her seen from the back father, Morty. Celebrities turned up in droves, from Cloris Leachman as Maxwell's old nanny (complete with Frau Brucher accent), Joan Collins as Maxwell's father's new wife, Dina Merrill as Maxwell's bitchy mother, and Patti LaBelle as herself, singing at a mother/daughter contest.

When audiences weren't laughing at Fran's efforts to win Maxwell's love or Sylvia's constant eating or Yetta's lovable side-lines, they were laughing hysterically at the wisecracks between Maxwell's sarcastic partner, C.C. (the lovely Lauren Lane) and his sardonic butler, Niles (Daniel Davis) who only had a first name, "Like Cher", he explained. I never believed C.C. and Niles as lovers, and it was often insinuated that Niles was possibly gay, even though he simply explained that away as "Being British", although the scene-stealing Davis was really from Arkansas. Unlike other sitcoms, the story lines seemed to be continuous, although there were only a few cliffhangers, and that has to be attributed to the excellent writing. Watching the children grow up too was fascinating for audiences, and references to older sitcoms like "I Love Lucy" and "Gilligan's Island" were nostalgic for baby boomers.

Of all the sitcoms that I've collected, this is definitely the most nostalgic and show business oriented with visits to the sets of "The Young and the Restless", several talk shows (including Rosie O'Donnell's) and fake Broadway shows which Max had produced. And any sitcom that can get Elizabeth Taylor to make a guest appearance can't be all bad. The last two seasons with its continuing story do keep the laughs, but change the theme as Maxwell and Fran become more involved. In the final scene when married, Maxwell discovers that his new bride isn't quite as perfect as he thought, questioning his love for her which is real in spite of her attempt at smothering him at times, while she realizes that he's a bit too stuffy for her. They obviously will have to learn to tolerate each others differences. So it's all out now, completely, and hopefully those who have discovered its charm from re-runs will go out, buy it, share it with the younger generations and keep it going, because it is definitely a modern classic.

Decent entertainment but gradually looses it's charm
Vincent_Fjodor18 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This show started out really great. The first few seasons were a delight to watch. Unfortunately it could not keep up the high quality and the later seasons are not as good as the first. The jokes got less funny and the stories got more and more bizarre (Fran and Maxwell stranded on an abandoned island for example).

The same goes for the characters: most of them were well-written in the beginning, but got worse in later seasons. Fran started out absolutely lovely, but in the later seasons, she was an obnoxious, spoiled and whiny housewife who behaved like a complete idiot, only to serve unrealistic plotlines (like the time she decides to sit on the railing of a boat for a picture and falls). I have no problems with extremely dumb characters (for example I loved Joey from 'Friends'), but with Fran all I could do is cringe about her stupidity. In season 6 it's even worse: all she does is obsessing about wanting a baby and it got more and more irritating. Maxwell was never a very interesting character to me but he was decent. However, in the later seasons I feel like Charles Shaughnessy was no longer in touch with his role. Maxwell and Fran had more chemistry before they got married. After that it's 'darling' this and 'darling' that, but the chemistry is completely gone. In the final season, the only reason I continued watching were the brilliant performances of Lauren Lane (C.C. Babcock) and Daniel Davis (Niles). Their roasts were the only things that kept the series funny.

In conclusion: this sitcom is no Friends, but it's decent entertainment.

Daniel Davis' wasted talents.
amrkamel9914 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
No offense to all the fans of this show but its just doesn't do it for me 1st of all i get a headache every time she talks, and the jokes they make about her voice are obnoxious (although i think its intended to be so) also i feel that Daniel Davis' talents were wasted on his show hes simply too good to play a butler that pops one liners every 5 seconds when he has the talent for more intellectual roles that actually have decent lines. In star trek: The next generation he plays sherlock Holmes' talented and intellectual arch nemesis and he totally rocked it. also the storyline of this show is weak and although its sometimes interesting... rarely i find the only reason i watch this show simply because nothing else is on. Also Margret the biggest sister is very stiff

Our favorite comedy series of all time
davidink28 July 2022
Everybody in my family loves The Nanny, from 12 to 55 years old. I myself have rewatched all episodes several times! The humor mostly arises from the clashes between Fran's and Maxwell's personalities but also between Mrs Babcock and Niles. Unlike a ton of other comedy series it is not a long line of one-liners but thr laughs rather come due to the entertaining personalities. Just watch the 1st episode - if you love it then watch the rest too because they are all in the same spirit. I also like how you are left with a warm fuzzy feeling.

Good show, bad voice
SanteeFats7 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This show was a good one but watching back to back episodes got a bit tiring on my ears with Fran Drescher's voice grating in my ears. The beginning premise is pretty weak with a rich man turning his kids over to a door to door saleswoman who happens to appear when he so desperately needs some one. The show takes off from there though when she is hired as the nanny and moves in. The kids are very funny and the give and take between Niles, the butler, and CiCi, the partner, is some of the best repartee in the episodes. Of course I can not imagine a butler actually being that snotty to some one and still having a job but this is TV, suspend reality. I loved Fran's grandma Yeta, she is a blast and adds some good old fashion free love to the show.

What a horrible show
crossroads83963 June 2008
I can't believe all the good reviews for this corny so-called comedy. Especially compared to all the good comedies of that era (such as Newsradio, Third Rock From the Sun, Murphy Brown, etc.), I don't understand how this train wreck of a show lasted so long. I guess some people are just very easily amused. Or maybe it was a favorite of children? I can't really fathom an adult being entertained by this garbage. Cringingly unfunny. I would place "The Nanny" on the level of "Full House" or even '60s dreck like "The Beverly Hillbillies." Trying to think of something good about this show...well, the characters did live in a nice apartment.
