John Korty, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning director and documentarian known for his films “Who Are the DeBolts?” and “Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids?” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” has died. He was 85.
Korty’s death was first reported by the Marin Independent Journal, which said that he died in his home in Marin County, California, on March 9.
A filmmaker who straddled the line between independent films and mainstream narrative work, Korty started his career in animation in the early 1950s. While still in school in Antioch, Ohio, he experimented with new techniques for animation that he would use in television spots. In 1964, he even developed an animated documentary short film called “Breaking the Habit” that was sponsored by the American Cancer Society about the dangers of smoking, and the spot went on to receive an Oscar nomination.

Funny man Alphonso McAuley never considered being an actor until he discovered improvisation in a high school drama class. His teacher said, "Say anything off the top of your head and make it into a scene for the class." He tried it and made his entire class laugh hysterically. From there on, he was hooked. Now the actor is making audiences laugh on two television comedies. He plays quirky prankster tech geek Cassius "Cash" Sparks on Fox's "Breaking In," and Tatyana Ali's brother Latrell in "Love That Girl" on TV One. McAuley talks to Back Stage about simultaneous shoots, taking risks, and happy premonitions. Back Stage: You booked "Love That Girl" and "Breaking In" in the same year. How did that happen and how did the timing work out with shooting?Alphonso McAuley: At the end of 2009, I was going hard with stand up comedy, and I took this class.

Amir, here, back with more coverage of new Tiff films. The Toronto International Film Festival is winding down but luckily I have a couple of big name movies still scheduled. Here's a few from the last two days.
Once Upon A Time In Anatolia (Nuri Bilge Ceylan)
This Cannes grand prix winner is a slow-paced police procedural in which a doctor, a prosecutor and a group of other police agents drag an alleged murderer along with them in the rural Anatolia region of Turkey so he can show them where he’s hidden his victim’s body. More than half of this gorgeously shot film is spent during the night and I for one wished the morning never came. Gokhan Tiryaki’s impeccable lighting and the varied range of shots he creates in the limitless but monotonous locale of the film easily tops my personal list of best cinematography of the year.

Festival season heading your way out there in the dark. Even if you only experience film festivals through blog mania for the same, that's still something. That's how most of us experience Cannes each year, yes? This year Tfe will be doing a lot from Nyff as it's close to home (5 stops on the subway close!) and quite inexpensive since there's already a bed to sleep in: one's own! But we have lined up a few foreign correspondents to give you bits and bobs from Venice (Aug 31st-Sept 10th), Toronto (Sept 8th-18th), and London (Oct 12th-27th). Quite often commenting is light on film festival pieces, which one assumes is because of the unfamiliar factor of the films, though sometimes it's quite distressing -- I even drew you cartoons from Nashville and there was nary a peep! -- so some feedback would be greatly appreciated:

After a tour around the festival circuit with his critically acclaimed Applause, Martin Pieter Zandvliet set his sights on directing a biopic about Denmark’s greatest comedian, Dirch Passer. Three decades after his too-early death, A Funny Man tells the story of the comedian’s tragic life.

Hot off an Oscar win in February for In a Better World, Denmark has announced their follow up contender ...or at least their intention to announce it. The land of my ancestors has narrowed down the past year in Dansk film to three tre: SuperClásico, Martin Zandvliet's Dirch (A Funny Man) and Pernille Fischer Christensen's En familie (A Family).
En Familie, which my Danish informant Thomas (tak!) predicts will be the selection is a drama about a wealthy family with a dying patriarch. Jesper Christensen stars. You might recognize him from the Daniel Craig Bond films (he plays Mr White) or from the popular Swedish flick Everlasting Moments. He's also in Melancholia this year though I don't know how large his role is there.
SuperClásico is a divorce comedy which actually takes place in Buenos Aires. No word yet on whether that naked bum on the poster is...

Justin Timberlake has worn quite a few hats: Golden Boy Pop Star, SNL Funny Man, Sexy Guy-Next-Door but, impressively, he's still evolving.
Now we get to see Action Star Justin. Fox released a steamy new trailer for 'In Time.' In this adrenal pumping thriller, we get to see the star in a whole new light as he (pretty awesomely) bats away all his other personas.
The movie is set in a futurist dystopia where people are set to die at the age of 25. The only currency is time and here Timberlake attempts to beat the clock with the help of (a very beautiful) Amanda Seyfried.
Is there anything he can't do?

Hardcore "Fright Night" fans have had mixed reactions since the new trailer for the vampire remake debuted earlier this year. The horror comedy's original cast has some big shoes to fill – especially where the roles of fanged fiend Jerry Dandridge and vampire killer extraordinaire Peter Vincent are concerned. DreamWorks' new international trailer has arrived and gives us a better look at some of our principal players – namely Charlie's (Anton Yelchin) idol and partner in staking, the new Peter Vincent ("Dr. Who's" David Tennant) who is now a Las Vegas magician instead of a horror TV host.
The trailer also delivers more on the horror front – opening like a snarky comedy before it digs into the dark stuff. Colin Farrell seems to fit the bill as the sexy and scary vamp that retaliates against Charlie for being a nosy neighbor. When the high schooler and his horror-obsessed pal Evil Ed...

Nate may not be Blair's baby-daddy, but that doesn't mean Chace Crawford isn't expecting a little one sometime soon.
The "Gossip Girl" dreamboat is bringing his baby blues to Kirk Jones' "What to Expect When You're Expecting," based on the iconic pregnancy guide that has been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 500 weeks. (That's almost 10 years, people.)
He joins an all-star cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Brooklyn Decker, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick and Rob Huebel. Funny man Chris Rock and Rodrigo Santoro are also in talks to join the ensemble rom-com, Collider reports.
Crawford will play Marco, who reunites with an old flame (Anna Kendrick) after a turf war between their respective food trucks, and, being the enterprising young man that he is, acts totally responsibly promptly proceeds to get her pregnant. (No, it wasn't planned).
The film will follow not one, but four interweaving couples.

If you follow me on Twitter (and really, why wouldn’t you?), you’ve already gotten a taste of my enthusiasm for this Friday’s Smallville (The CW, 8/7c). But only so much can be expressed in 140-character blasts. So if no one minds, allow me to elaborate — in a teasey, rather spoiler-free manner — on why “Booster,” which was penned by Geoff Johns and directed by series lead/exec producer Tom Welling, is a bit of Smallville gold.
Golden Boy | Smallville is now 2-for-2 when it comes to successfully plucking former Passions actors (e.g. Justin Hartley) to play hero.

Funny man Dax Shepard is still battling a car accident claim after a young motorist almost killed him while performing a U-turn in the middle of the road. The other driver's Range Rover pushed the actor's car into oncoming traffic and Shepard's life flashed before him as a bus screeched to a halt to avoid crushing him.
The shaken "When in Rome" star got out of his vehicle only to find that the Range Rover driver was blaming him for the accident. He says, "These guys immediately they come out of the gates hot. They're like, 'Bro, what happened?' I'm like, 'You tell me man, you just, made a left turn into my car'."
The two motorists exchanged insurance details and the Range Rover driver parted with the words, "Look bro, accidents happen". An angry Shepard responded, "Yeah, especially when you do U-turns into people."

Funny man, Sacha Baron Cohen, has lined up a new comedy called The Dictator that will be in the vein of his previous films, Bruno and Borat.
The comedy will be released worldwide on May 11, 2012. The studio also announced that Larry Charles (“Borat”, “Bruno”) has come aboard to direct.
The film tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. It is inspired by the best selling novel “Zabibah and The King” by Saddam Hussein.
Producing alongside Baron Cohen are Scott Rudin, Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel. The project marks the first collaboration for Rudin (“The Social Network,” “True Grit”) and Baron Cohen, while Berg, Schaffer and Mandel (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) join him as screenwriters on the movie. Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen are such messes, they're like a gift from the Gods to all comedians. Funny man Ricky Gervais is pretty psyched that Charlie has been a complete slob kabob lately because it gives him plenty of material to work with. Leslie Nielsen's death prompted a full day's worth of reactions in Twitter-Wood today, both from fans respectful enough not to call him "Shirley" and those who thought he would prefer to be remembered by that name. Dane Cook dedicated a show to him, while Brian Posehn shared his favorite Nielsen anecdote, and Olivia Wilde just plain misses him.
The "Star Wars" community experienced a loss as well, though, with the passing of "Empire Strikes Back" director Irvin Kershner. John Hodgman, Brian Lynch and Kyle Newman all contributed perspectives on their accounts, and Nathan Fillion shared some Christmas tree ornaments that Kershner might have appreciated.
