Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” Much of Tony Scott’s 1995 thriller Crimson Tide takes place aboard a submarine, with the conflict coming from the two main characters — played by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman — at odds over their interpretations of a missile launch order. Because of the close quarters of the sub, Washington told us at the time of the release that at times, it almost felt like doing a stage play with Hackman, rather than a film. One of the greatest crime movies of all time, "The French Connection" is William Friedkin's gritty drama based on a true story. Gene Hackman stars as Detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle, a no-nonsense, rule-breaking cop who gets caught up investigating a case in which the Italian mob is bringing drugs into America with the help of a French heroin-smuggling syndicate. But this isn't an open-and-shut case. The lawmen are seemingly foiled at every turn, and things end on a shocking, bleak note. It's an amazing movie with one of the best chase sequences ever captured on film. "The French Connection" was released nearly 53 years ago, which means many of its cast members have left us, along with director Friedkin, who died last year. But a few are still around. So here are the only major actors still alive from "The French Connection."

Denzel Washington’s 2010 action thriller The Book Of Eli is heading to the small screen, with John Boyega take the lead as a younger Denzel.
Much like Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington has become something of an action hero in the latter stages of his career. While he has previously appeared in films like Ricochet and Crimson Tide, it wasn’t until he played John Creasy in Tony Scott’s brutal 2004 revenge film Man On Fire that we really got to see him off some bad guys in a variety of inventive ways.
Since then of course, he has become synonymous with vigilante justice, dishing out karmic vengeance in three Equalizer films to date. But in 2010, he played a different kind of action hero in The Book Of Eli, a post apocalyptic thriller in which he plays a drifter intent on delivering a sacred book to safety in the West Coast of the United States.

Lots of people dream of making a studio movie, but in the midst of their reverie, they don't always take into account just what a grueling process it can be. People work long hours and are expected to be at their sharpest every day so that the project doesn't fall behind schedule or go over budget. From the director on down, the pressure to deliver is immense. So every now and then, a little levity is in order. This occasionally results in on-set pranks, which sometimes get a tad out of control.
Consider the case of 1996's "The Fan." Tony Scott's thriller about a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan (Robert De Niro) who begins stalking his favorite baseball player (Wesley Snipes) was a high-profile production for Sony. The studio poured $55 million into the movie, and hoped it would be a late-summer, adult-skewing smash à la "The Fugitive" or "Unforgiven.

At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.
Christopher Reeve, especially, gives a spectacular performance in the lead role. What he does best is clearly mark the differences and tension between his naive, dweeby alter ego Clark Kent and the formidable Superman. Viggo Mortensen is a three-time Oscar nominated performer who has been very picky with his projects, appearing only in a handful of movies in a 30-plus year career. But how many of his titles hold up as classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958 in New York City, Mortensen made his big screen debut with a brief performance as an Amish farmer in “Witness” (1985). Supporting roles in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “G.I. Jane” (1997) and many others quickly followed. He achieved stardom in middle age playing the warrior Aragorn in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His first Oscar bid as Best Actor came shortly thereafter for David Cronenberg‘s thriller “Eastern Promises” (2007), followed by nominations for “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and the Best Picture-winning “Green Book” (2018).

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.

At the turn of the millennium, Gladiator revived Ridley Scott_. But despite constant rumours, he’s never returned to the world of his greatest hit… until now.
Here’s what you need to know.
1) It’s a Ridley Scott joint
Scott might have ceded the director’s chair for Blade Runner 2049 to Denis Villeneuve, but rather than delegate the Gladiator sequel, he’s kept it for himself. Production is set to get underway when he finishes his quiet, intimate drama (read: massive battle-tastic historical epic) Napoleon, which is currently in post-production.
It’s funny to see him taking on back-to-back sword-swinging behemoths – back in the early 2000s, Scott nearly turned down the offer from super-producer Dino De Laurentiis to direct Hannibal, because he thought it was about the Carthaginian general and his elephants, and couldn’t face climbing another Gladiator-sized mountain straight away.Apparently he has even more energy today,...

With Kevin Feige, you think Marvel. With Kathleen Kennedy, you think of Star Wars and Jurassic Park. But when you consider Jerry Bruckheimer — who’s ranked as the third-highest-grossing movie producer of all time, his films earning a collective 12 billion — the associations get more spread out.
There is the mammoth Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, of course. But there also are several other franchises like National Treasure, Bad Boys and Beverly Hills Cop, plus many one-off hits such as Crimson Tide, Black Hawk Down, Con Air and Armageddon. And this year, Bruckheimer had perhaps his greatest cinematic accomplishment in his career — the stunning sequel Top Gun: Maverick. And none of that even factors in his sprawling TV empire (including the CSI shows).
In truth, the franchise that has carried Bruckheimer is his own instincts. He’s hardly ever been handed ideas with a preexisting fan base.

Though it wasn’t one of the films that earned Denzel Washington one of his 10 Academy Award nominations, Crimson Tide remains a fan favorite. And, as it turns out, it’s still one of Washington’s favorites, too. Washington told us he found the film to be especially exciting because he got to work with a true Hollywood legend, two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, in a story that played out more like a stage performance than a movie. Gene Hackman is one of the greatest actors of all time. He's also someone who has reinvented himself for many different generations. Although some great actors have never returned to the highlights of their early work, Hackman continued to prove why he was one of the best for decades after he first broke out in the industry.
Between crime thrillers, stage adaptations, quirky comedies, historical epics, and even a superhero movie franchise, Hackman has left major contributions to nearly every genre. Although Hackman clearly had a commanding dramatic presence, he wasn't afraid to take a chance on comedic roles. His single scene in Mel Brooks' 1974 classic "Young Frankenstein" is one of the most memorable moments in the film. Tony Scott is one of the directors responsible for the modern blockbuster. In his time, critics widely dismissed him for combining rapid-fire editing with ultra-stylized visuals, which they said was the so-called “MTV aesthetic” (like that’s a bad thing). Ten years after his death, he’s considered one of the greatest action directors ever, with a widespread critical re-evaluation of his work in the wake of Top Gun: Maverick‘s success. Indeed, for those of us who loved him when he was alive, the fact that he’s great isn’t news, and in this episode of We Remember, we pay tribute to the man and his work.

Quentin Tarantino says he doesn’t normally like to weigh in on current films, but he’s making an exception for Top Gun: Maverick.
The director was asked about the film while appearing on the ReelBlend podcast this week with his Pulp Fiction co-writer, Roger Avary.
Tarantino began with the caveat that he doesn’t like to talk about new films “because then I’m only forced to say good things, or else I’m ‘slamming’ someone, I don’t want to do that.” Then he plowed ahead: “But in this case, I fucking love Top Gun: Maverick. I thought it was fantastic. I saw it at the theaters. … That and [Steven] Spielberg’s West Side Story both provided a true cinematic spectacle, the kind that I’d almost thought that I wasn’t going to see anymore. For a 19 million movie, there was a lot riding on Michael Bay's "Bad Boys."
The action-comedy marked the official return of producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the ultimate style-over-substance duo, who, after knocking out era-defining blockbusters in "Flashdance," "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Top Gun," flamed out in 1990 when the wildly excessive "Days of Thunder" fell woefully short of box-office expectations. Rather than stake their comeback on one film, Simpson and Bruckheimer managed their risk via three modestly budgeted 1995 releases: "Bad Boys," "Crimson Tide" and "Dangerous Minds." But while they didn't need Bay's film to break the bank, the optics of...

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), Mireille Enos (Hanna), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) are the latest additions to Michelle Danner’s courtroom drama, Miranda’s Victim. They join an ensemble led by Abigail Breslin, which also includes Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland, as previously announced.
The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. Her case notably results in the establishment of the Miranda rights afforded to criminal suspects taken in police custody, to ensure the admissibility of statements made during interrogation, as part of subsequent criminal proceedings.

Denzel Washington never saw a production of “Macbeth” in high school or college. So when he was offered the titular role in Shakespeare’s great tragedy, which he’d only read in the past two years, he wanted to make sure that he could wrap his head around how director Joel Coen would shoot the film with him and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. “Let’s talk about the black and white of it all,” Washington recalls saying to Coen in an early conversation.
Coen began to respond, “Well, you’re Black …” before Washington stopped him. “No, no, no,” he interrupted. “I’m talking about you shooting in black and white!”
Washington laughs as he retells the story on a recent November afternoon during a conversation with Variety about his career as one of the most enduring movie stars of modern times. “So that’s where my head was at,...

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

“Top Gun” producer Jerry Bruckheimer celebrated the film’s 35th anniversary this month by reflecting on the movie’s unexpected legacy as a gay film in an interview with Vulture. This reading of the film was immortalized by Quentin Tarantino, who has a single scene in the 1994 movie “Sleep with Me” in which he appears to give a monologue explaining why the Tom Cruise-starring “Top Gun” is really “a story about a man’s struggle with his own homosexuality.”
“You’ve got Maverick, all right?” Tarantino’s character says. “He’s on the edge, man. He’s right on the fucking line, all right? And you’ve got Iceman, and all his crew. They’re gay, they represent the gay man, all right? And they’re saying, go, go the gay way, go the gay way. He could go both ways…Kelly McGillis, she’s heterosexuality. She’s saying: no,...

Oscars ratings hit new lows, but this week’s VOD rentals tell another story. With several titles making their debuts, Oscar winners dominate the charts. The bounty could continue in upcoming weeks given the lack of theatrical availability, older audiences’ reluctance to return to theaters, and the ease of home access.
That said, the dominant title is Universal’s thriller “Nobody” starring Bob Odenkirk. It holds #1 spots on three of the charts and is #2 on the fourth. The Universal film added PVOD after three weeks and remained #4 in theaters for the weekend. Odenkirk’s Nobody may be the next John Wick.
“Promising Young Woman,” which went to PVOD in mid-January and has been available at standard pricing for more than a month, has been the best Oscar performer. It’s the only Oscar title on all four charts, including its first-ever #1 (at AppleTV). It’s also the top standard-price VOD at FandangoNow,...

When the 35th edition of the American Society of Cinematographers Awards for Outstanding Achievement convenes on April 18 to announce the winners, all eyes will be on the future of their craft.
This year’s crop of nominees in the feature film category includes two fresh faces and three previous contenders — but a distinct lack of usual suspects and past superstars like Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Richardson, Janusz Kaminski and Rodrigo Prieto. Perhaps it’s a matter of timing in this strange year, with some big titles being held back, or prestigious projects landing prior to the pandemic. And surely, the quarantine had some effect on how this year’s films were seen and perceived.
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” brought Phedon Papamichael his seventh ASC nod, following last year’s “Ford v Ferrari,” while “News of the World,” the Tom Hanks Western, gave Dariusz Wolski his second, a full 25 years after his first,...

Megaproducer Jerry Bruckheimer’s first look deal with Paramount Pictures will expire in February and will not be renewed, TheWrap has learned.
Reps for Paramount and Bruckheimer had no comment. The news was first reported in Variety.
Bruckheimer first signed a first-look deal with Paramount in 2013, after Disney failed to renew its 20-year deal with the producer despite the blockbuster success of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise starring Johnny Depp.
At Paramount, Bruckheimer produced last year’s Will Smith sci-fi film, “Gemini Man,” which disappointed at the box office. He also produced next year’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to his 1986 megahit starring Tom Cruise. “Maverick” starred Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer.

Jerry Bruckheimer’s first-look deal with Paramount Pictures is set to expire in February and will not be renewed.
That makes the superstar producer of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise a free agent. Bruckheimer first signed a pact with Paramount in 2013, leaving Disney where he had been housed for two decades. The studio had moved away from the kind of action movies that were Bruckheimer’s stock in trade, instead devoting more of its attention to Marvel movies and animated fare. That made Paramount a natural landing spot. It’s unclear if Bruckheimer will try to find a new studio to hang his shingle or if he will instead move fully off the lot and explore life as a truly independent producer.

Exclusive: Actor and Native American advocate Sonny Skyhawk and actor/writer Jaime Gomez (Nash Bridges) have teamed to launch the production shingle Native Spectrum, which will focus on traditional and contemporary stories based on Native American and Latinx folklore and culture
Native Spectrum will concentrate on television projects and will later expand into feature films. Two projects currently on their list of pitches include two one-hour dramas. One is set in the multi-billion-dollar Indian gaming industry and the other drama focuses on the murder and disappearance of Native American and Indigenous girls and women.
“Exploring these stories of the American Indian and other indigenous cultures is both artistically long overdue and good business for the entertainment industry,” said Skyhawk, who is one of the few, if not only Native American member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. “Native American folklore and contemporary culture present...

On May 12, 1995, Buena Vista unveiled its war thriller Crimson Tide in theaters. The film, starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, went on to gross $157 million globally during its run. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:
Simpson/Bruckheimer have plunged to the ocean's depths to reach the heights of commercial, big-movie filmmaking. Buoyed by steely lead performances from Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, Crimson Tide will readily roll into $100 million waters for Buena Vista.
A '90s-style Caine Mutiny, Crimson Tide is a topical, and eerily credible, brink-of-disaster movie. It's a riveting, post-Cold War scenario triggered by ...

Denzel Washington is outstanding as novelist Walter Mosley’s hero, Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, in the immaculate, 1940s-set neo-noir “Devil in a Blue Dress,” but that’s not the only reason for its significance. The movie was the first, and remains the only, onscreen appearance of the character, even though Mosley has featured him in 14 novels since the first publication in 1990. There was the potential for a movie franchise starring Washington, but the film’s failure at the box office (despite favorable reviews) likely destroyed any chances of that happening. However, while a series never materialized, this one-off adaptation remains a monument for Washington fans and lovers of hard-boiled fiction alike.

Jock aversion stopped one writer from catching the Tom Cruise film that launched a thousand action sequences. But how is a film so influential so unimaginative?
See the other classic missed films in this seriesThe best arts and entertainment during self-isolation
In 1986, I was 15 and gorging myself on movies of every stripe, so why did I never see Top Gun? My subsequent admiration for Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State proves I’m not immune to the magnetism of its director, Tony Scott. And it can’t be that I was averse to the glossy, pumped-up hedonism that was the stock-in-trade of the super-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, since I’d coughed up my hard-earned paper-round money to see Beverly Hills Cop twice the previous year. Most likely, the deal-breaker was Tom Cruise. He was too much like the jocks with their laminated skin and torch-beam teeth who...

Call of Duty meets The Hunt For Red October in this slick, gripping underwater action thriller that pits one man against a devastating nuclear threat. This impressive, big budget French production, with director Antonin Baudry helming his first feature, plunges the viewer deep into the highly-charged underwater world of the submarine crew, combining the claustrophobic atmosphere of Das Boot with the nerve-shredding action sequences of The Hunt For Red October.
Lead actors Francois Civil, Omar Sy (Jurassic World) and Mathieu Kassovitz (The Fifth Element) are terrific, as the sub crew desperately attempting to prevent an international catastrophe, despite being only ‘small cogs in a big machine’. The plot twists and turns like an eel, and the sophisticated military hardware is stunningly realised.
