Broadway has a bright new star, and his name is Ben Platt.
The 23-year-old L.A. native — movie fans may know him as Benji from Pitch Perfect — is currently playing to sold-out-crowds and earning rave reviews for his emotionally raw performance in Dear Evan Hansen, the new musical from composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the lyricists for the Golden Globe-winning film La La Land).
The musical has now been nominated for nine Tony Awards, including best musical and — yes — lead actor in a musical for Platt.

On Monday we attended a press conference with Meryl Streep and her two costars Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg for their new film Florence Foster Jenkins. Also in attendance was director Stephen Frears, who in years past did The Queen and Philomena.
Streep plays the title character, a notably bad singer who lived in New York in the 1940s but who, in part thanks to her immense wealth, was able to sing in Carnegie Hall. Grant plays Florence’s partner, who normally shielded her from the truth about her talents by mockers and scoffers, and Helberg played her hapless piano teacher, who must deal with the aloof student.
The conversation with the talent covered everything from whether they identified with their characters, to working with each other, and world events. Here are some of the highlights.
What was your first introduction to Florence Foster Jenkins, when did you first hear of her?...

Chicago – For nine seasons, Simon Helberg has graced the television screen as Howard, on the number one comedy hit “The Big Bang Theory.” As the show nears the end of its run, Helberg is breaking out a bit, starting with a vital supporting role opposite Meryl Streep in the new film, “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
The film tells the based-on-truth story of the title character, a wealthy women of society who desires only to sing opera, but cannot carry a tune. With the help of her husband St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant) and her piano accompanist Cosmé Moon (Helberg), she manages to get all the way to a performance at Carnegie Hall, and the subsequent recording of that 1940s concert has become one of the most requested and popular to come out of that legendary music venue.

17 years ago today, Trekkies said goodbye to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It was on June 2, 1999 that the series finale of DS9 aired. The series was a moderate success during the seven seasons it was on the air, and it didn’t win over every Star Trek fan. It was different in many key ways from Trek shows that came before it, and that made it divisive. Set on a space station instead of aboard a starship with more serialized rather than standalone storytelling, it was a darker show, dealing with flawed characters and moral complexity. Its influence on Battlestar Galactica is evident, and that shouldn’t be a surprise — BSG co-showrunner Ronald D. Moore got his start with three Star Trek series, including co-executive producing DS9. Also an alum of DS9: Bryan Fuller, who will be showrunning the new CBS Star Trek series premiering next year. (Yes, he...

Golden Bear winner Gianfranco Rosi among those calling for “awareness” of migrant tragedies.
The awards ceremony of the 66th Berlin Film Festival was a typically glamorous occasion, with Hollywood star and international jury head Meryl Streep on stage to help present the coveted Golden and Silver Bears.
But it was the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, claiming countless lives in perilous sea crossings, that dominated the winner’s speeches – and the winning film.
The Golden Bear was won by Fire At Sea, a documentary about life on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa where thousands of asylum seekers from Africa and the Middle East have landed on their arduous journey to Europe.
Accepting the award, Italian director Gianfranco Rosi said: “At this moment, my deeper thoughts go to all the people who never arrived at Lampedusa on these journeys of hope. I want to dedicate this award to the people of Lampedusa.”

There's a semi-hidden Hollywood treasure in Deadpool. No, it's not star Ryan Reynolds, although he is perfectly cast; it's prolific, award-winning actress Leslie Uggams, who plays Deadpool's no-nonsense elderly roommate, Blind Al. Uggams' entertainment career spans six decades, countless stages and screens. One which began at the ripe old age of 6 and includes a Tony, an Emmy and performances with icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Charlton Heston. "I was a ham at 5, I was working at 6," Uggams, 72, tells People via a phone call from Chicago, where she is currently filming a guest arc on Empire.

Coleen Gray in 'The Sleeping City' with Richard Conte. Coleen Gray after Fox: B Westerns and films noirs (See previous post: “Coleen Gray Actress: From Red River to Film Noir 'Good Girls'.”) Regarding the demise of her Fox career (the year after her divorce from Rod Amateau), Coleen Gray would recall for Confessions of a Scream Queen author Matt Beckoff: I thought that was the end of the world and that I was a total failure. I was a mass of insecurity and depended on agents. … Whether it was an 'A' picture or a 'B' picture didn't bother me. It could be a Western movie, a sci-fi film. A job was a job. You did the best with the script that you had. Fox had dropped Gray at a time of dramatic upheavals in the American film industry: fast-dwindling box office receipts as a result of competition from television,...

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Ice Cube visited "The Tonight Show" to chat about "Straight Outta Compton," and while he couldn't say what N.W.A stands for, he did reveal what it doesn't stand for. Nine White Accountants, for example. Or, even more hilarious, Nickleback Was Awesome.
Meryl Streep and her daughter, Mamie Gummer, worked together on "Ricki and the Flash," but apparently Streep totally ignored her kid on set. Look, she didn't win all those awards by being nice.
Over on "Late Night," Jason Segel mused on what it was like to costar in a movie with dogs. Apparently, he had to "stuff his pants with salmon" to get the pups to be interested in him,...

This week, Variety reported on a study that was released confirming what many already know about the film industry, or at the very least anecdotally: Women are having an increasingly hard time breaking in.
The study showed that there’s a large gender gap between independently financed and directed projects by women when compared to projects within the studio system. The Sundance Institute and Women in Film looked at movies in competition at Sundance between 2002 and 2014 compared to the top 1300 grossing films between the same time period. Men appeared at Sundance at a ratio of 3 to 1 more often than women, but an even more staggering 23 to 1 when looking at studio films.
Further, half of the industry executives surveyed believed that films directed by women did not appeal as broadly as films directed by men. A quarter of those surveyed added that they shared a “perceived lack of ambition” in women directors,...

For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team...

We wanted to let everyone get their hopes and getting "50 Shades of Grey" out of your system before we completely ruined Valentines with awful memories of hearts being crushed to a pulp. So, we caught up with current and future Latino filmmakers we actually do love! We asked them about their worst dates (because we love bringing up the past.) Their fave love story and anyone in the movies they’ve crush on. Give them so ‘Follows’!
Daniel Armando – (Filmmaker) What It Was
Worst Valentine's date: There's a Valentine's date I remember and it wasn't because it was a bad date, but because it was a realization I had. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the stroll through the park was lovely. It was the ideal perfect Valentine's date, but I was slowly realizing that it was with someone who didn't feel the same way I did. I felt bad because I wish I had spent it with someone who did feel the same way and who I truly loved. A romantic film that comes to mind is Forrest Gump. The love that Forrest had for Jenny is amazingly beautiful. Through all the excitement, confusion, and chaos that surrounded his life the one thing he was sure about was his calm, simple, and never-ending love for Jenny. He's not a smart man, but he knows what love is.

My favorite cinematic love story is 'The Terminator'. Yes, it's an amazing Sci-Fi/Action film but at the core it's a love story: A man travels back in time to save the woman he fell in love with via a photo that was given to him by his unbeknownst son. His future was 2029, which isn't too far away and interestingly enough, people nowadays fall in love via photos on Instagram. If a man traveled back in time to be with me you can bet I would never terminate that relationship. Lol. I did try online dating once and the guy was not the same from the pictures on his profile. After some small talk, I said to him, "I'll be back." But unlike The Terminator, I didn't come back. Instead I hauled ass out of there.

Years ago I went out with this fella who tried to impress me with money – never a good idea. He picked me up in (his sister’s) Range Rover. He was in med school and broke down how much money he was going to make each year following his graduation. Dude pretty much talked about himself the whole date. To top it off, based on his suggestion, we went to a restaurant but he barely ate because he’d already eaten. Nothing a girl loves more than to be stuffing her face alone on a first date! The conversation was lacking, but I do remember the food was delicious! I don’t have a favorite love story that comes to mind; I just love ‘love.’ I love seeing my friends in love – love seeing them honored and appreciated. So those are my favorite love stories the ones in which the people I care for most are receiving the absolute best.
Noah played by Ryan Gosling in The Notebook. Say what you want, but I love that movie! Here’s a man who was fun, kind, passionate, crafty, and insanely loyal. (And very easy on the eyes!)

Not so much "bad date," more like no chemistry date. I didn't necessarily go to a breakup album, but rather to specific songs that reminded me of the person and would ironically make me feel even more nostalgic. Cuando Te Beso, Juan Luis Guerra, Negra Murguera, from Argentine band Bersuit Vergarabat, lots of Concha Buika and Amy Winehouse (just 'cause) and old School Mecano. Mecano has a song about "how hard it's to forget him"... I must have listened to that song thousands of times.
The Bridges of Madison County is definitely one my favorite romantic films of all times, and you need some serious ice cream eating at that scene where Francesca (the luminous Meryl Streep) holds the door knob and is fighting not to open it as Clint Eastwood places the necklace with the cross on the mirror. Ufff, I always cry with that scene.
Some of my film crushes are Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Benicio del Toro and Edgar Ramirez. I guess it's a combination of looks and their raw talent. Absolute best.

I have some favorite love story moments. One of them is in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood, when he goes on a first date with Kathy played by Patricia Arquette. They're in this little car in the Spook House when in the middle of the ride, the lights go out. As they wait, in that silence, he turns to her and tells her that he likes to dress as a woman, wear women’s sweaters and undergarments. She's a little confused. She asks him if that means he doesn’t like sex with women. “No!” he tells her, he loves sex with women. She takes it in, and after a moment she acceptingly says, “Okay.” The lights go on, the ride starts up again, and they continue through the Spook House. It’s such a sweet moment of acceptance, the permission to be who we are. It’s so sweet and simple and so elegantly done.
Worst date: It was a first date and after he kissed me -- a sweet kiss -- he told me he was trying to kick heroin.
Celebrity crush: On this Valentine's I would have to choose Warren Oates. Tell me if you -- man or woman -- don't have a crush on him after seeing him in The Wild Bunch, Badlands, Cockfighter, and Two-Lane Blacktop.

Hmm this is kind of a hard one because I've always managed somehow to not have a love interest on Cupid's Day of Love! But I guess I would have to go with 8th grade, a boy named Michael gave me an empty heart box :(...he had eaten all the chocolates!!!
A very particular breakup had me crushed around the holidays, and when Kelly Clarkson came out with her album My December I couldn't put it down. I realized that she was going through a really difficult breakup as well when she wrote the beautiful songs and it made me even closer to the words. Kelly, you helped me see the light girl!!!
Oooo there are just too many crushes I can't decide!!! But, forever and always Mr. Justin Timberlake will stand the test of time for me. I mean, what can't he do?? I tend to have talent crushes often and Justin's voice, dance skills, wit, and obvious gorgeous looks...well, damn God must have spent a little more time on you Jt!! Haha. Loving him since those *Nsync platinum blonde hair days, congratulations to little miss Jessica Biel!!

I don't think I've been on a really bad date on Valentine's, I've just been alone which is bad enough lol.... But the worst date?? This was a first date. I think he was really trying to impress me but was saying all the wrong things. All he talked about was material things. Like how he had a speed boat, Mercedes, etc... He went on to talk about how much money he made the previous year and how the current year he was going to surpass that amount. Maybe for most women they would've been impressed but I never returned his call or text again. Celebrity crush? ...Brad Pitt! Ever since I watched Legends of the Fall and A River Runs Through It I fell in love with the state of Montana. In fact, the main reason why I started dating my current boyfriend was because he was born and raised from Montana. So, I have to give Brad Pitt the credit there, Lol! I absolutely love nature. I love hiking and camping...Someday, Montana will be my home.

Actor and director who could imbue the many wretches, prigs and braggarts he played with a wrenching humanity
Philip Seymour Hoffman, who has died aged 46 of a suspected drugs overdose, had three names and 3,000 ways of expressing anxiety. He was a prolific and old-fashioned character actor, which is not a euphemism for "odd" – it means he could nail a part in one punch, summoning the richness of an entire life in the smallest gesture. And, yes, he could also look splendidly odd, with his windbeaten thatch of sandy hair, porcine eyes and a freckled face that would glow puce and glossy with rage. His acting style was immune to the temptations of caricature. His rise in the 1990s coincided with the emergence of a new wave of American film-makers, and his versatile, volatile talent became integral to some of the most original Us cinema of the past 20 years.

Los Angeles — "Beasts of the Southern Wild" star Quvenzhane Wallis is an actress of talent, poise and maturity well beyond her years.
She was only 5 years old when she auditioned and 6 when she played the part of Hushpuppy, a little girl of fierce strength and resourcefulness living with her daddy in a squalid slab of Louisiana swampland known as The Bathtub. She was just a regular kid from nearby Houma, La. – she'd never even acted before, and actually pretended to be a year older than she was to be considered.
Now, at only 9, Quvenzhane (Kuh-vahn-zuh-nay) is the youngest-ever actress nominee at the Academy Awards. Altogether, "Beasts" has four nominations at the Feb. 24 ceremony, including best picture.
While her presence is undeniable, Quvenzhane's nomination raises the question: How young is too young to compete for an Oscar, the film industry's highest honor, which has eluded performers with decades more experience and acclaim?...

Hollywood may be filled with talented younger actresses, their fresh skin and high cheekbones readymade for lovingly placed close-ups and leggy magazine covers. But this year’s early Oscar race for best actress has the spotlight shining on a handful of older contenders — from Sally Field in Lincoln to Helen Mirren in Hitchcock and Judi Dench in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — their veteran faces etched with experience, beauty, and perhaps a bit of wisdom.

• At this point, who isn't going to be in "August: Osage County"? Deadline reports that Ewan McGregor has joined the family as Bill, a college professor and estranged husband of Barbara (Julia Roberts) and son-in-law of pill-popping matriarch Violet (Meryl Streep).
• Every movie becomes better if Sam Rockwell is in it, which means "Why Now" is destined for greatness. Screen Daily reports that the "Seven Psychopaths" star has joined the cast of the indie comedy alongside Marisa Tomei and Brian Geraghty.
• Mrs. Robinson, eat your heart out! Broadway World reports that Decepticon co-ed Isabel Lucas is set to turn up the heat in "Careful What You Wish For," a "Basic Instinct"-esque thriller about a high school student's affair with an older woman that ends up having devastating consequences (as these things often do).
• Sheesh, everybody's getting naked for Lars Von Trier!

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

The Adventure Travel Film Festival, Sherborne
If you're the adventuring type, vicariously or otherwise, camping out at a Dorset girls' school for this delightfully homespun event will be no great challenge. On screen, there are bizarre and obscure travel films from the past 80 years: there's paragliding across Canada; canoeing down the Congo; around the world on a penny farthing; hitch-hiking across the Us; motorbiking through muddy Siberia with Polish devil-worshippers (really). Away from the screen, sample the smoked squirrel at the roadkill cookout.
Sherborne Girls School, Fri to 20 Aug
Mexfest, London
The familiar and the unexpected mix in this cinema-based celebration, which highlights the traditional features of Mexican culture – music, food, wrestling – alongside the less traditional ones, such as vintage sci-fi B-movies. There's still a distinctly local flavour to the latter, hence Santo Vs The Martian Invasion, with its masked-wrestler hero, or the brilliantly titled The Aztec Mummy Vs The Human Robot.

Oscar-winning composer who found success on Broadway with A Chorus Line
The American musician Marvin Hamlisch, who has died aged 68 after a short illness, won three Oscars, four Emmys, four Grammys and a Tony award in the course of composing A Chorus Line and a host of movie soundtracks, including The Sting and The Way We Were. Barbra Streisand, who starred in the latter film alongside Robert Redford, praised Hamlisch for "his brilliantly quick mind, his generosity and delicious sense of humour, which made him a delight to be around".
Hamlisch began his professional career working as a rehearsal pianist for Streisand's Broadway show Funny Girl. A meeting with the film producer Sam Spiegel led to his first film score, for The Swimmer (1968), and he then worked on the early Woody Allen movies Take the Money and Run (1969) and Bananas (1971).

Famed attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson have responded to the rallying cry to overturn the controversial R rating the MPAA gave the Weinstein Company-distributed documentary Bully. The legal duo were integral to overturning California’s Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage and also helped TWC in 2010 when they appealed the Nc-17 rating for their Oscar-nominated film Blue Valentine. Hey y'all! Are you ready for some Os-Cars?? This year, Billy Crystal hosts, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Nick Nolte, Christopher Plummer and Martin Scorsese number among the celebrated nominees.... Wtf is it 1985?? Yes, the Academy is going retro, celebrating the history of movies, and not just by lauding "The Artist" and "Hugo." Yeah, there are some newbies and left-field pics, but those kinda feel like shots in the dark at attempting to stay relevant (Rooney Mara, so edgy right now). Who could forget the breaking news from this week that the Academy is only old white men? Total Shocker. But we will attempt to find some fun in the proceedings, and dream of a George Clooney and Tilda Swinton hosted ceremony, where they perform a song and dance routine in matching tuxedos... what, oh sorry I drifted off into a daydream there. Instead, we will try and muddle through...

If Oscars can be relied on for anything, it's some flops on the red carpet, some overlong speeches -- and discussion of the Best Actress Curse.
The Best Actress Curse, of course, is the one that saw Sandra Bullock and Jesse James breaking up days after she proclaimed her love for him from Oscars' stage, and caught Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe in its web after her second win. Those are just two of the 17 actresses whose relationships have broken up within two years of them reaching the height of their careers.
Last year, researchers at University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University found there was more to this curse than simple coincidence -- after tabulating the statistics for winners versus non-winners, they found a 63 per cent chance of Best Actresses' marriages ending sooner (following the ceremony, the average was 4.30 years versus 9.51 years).

Emma Roberts announced last week that she is putting college on hold in order to concentrate on her career, for the time being at least. The young starlet has deferred her current enrollment at New York's Sarah Lawrence College due to "work commitments."
"Deferment" is the term being used by all of the requisite publicists for Roberts, making everyone carefully dance around the other d-word: "drop-out."
It's one thing for the "Scream 4" star to want to take a break to keep her career momentum strong, but if this girl wants a future in Hollywood, it may make more fiscal sense for her to keep hitting the books.
"I think this is an excuse that Emma Roberts doesn't want to complete college," said Hollywood Life Editor-in-Chief Bonnie Fuller. "Oscar-winning actresses have gone to college, which hasn't hurt their careers. Meryl Streep went to Dartmouth, and who has a bigger career than her?...

Ghostbuster's bespeckled Janine Melnitz is a classic film secretary, but the job has been demoted in Hollywood
With Ghostbusters back on the big screen this month, proton packs will no doubt pop into the mind of every potential viewer. But, as crucial as the stream-crossing equipment of Venkman, Egon, Ray and Winston is, the far more ordinary telephone deserves some love, too. After all, it gave secretary Janine Melnitz the perfect reason to squawk that immortal line: "Ghostbusters, whaddya want?!"
With the sound still carrying across cultural space more than 25 years later, Annie Potts's rendition of the overworked, underimpressed Brooklynite Janine stole scenes from every one of the Ghostbusters – with her small talk with Egon (Janine: "Do you have any hobbies?" With Ghostbusters back on the big screen this month, proton packs will no doubt pop into the mind of every potential viewer.

You may have thought he was just pouting at the camera, but Brad Pitt follows a profound and complicated acting method
Unusually for a movie star of his stature, Brad Pitt has never appeared on Inside the Actor's Studio. Perhaps this is because he doesn't want to spend an hour of his life being fawned over by a creepy-eyed interviewer and a room full of drippy sycophants, but it's more likely that he's just very wary of revealing the secrets of his acting method.
Because, make no mistake, Pitt has an acting method. It's why he can flit from action to comedy to impressionistic, dinosaur-heavy meditations of the meaning of life itself with enviable ease. But what's the secret behind Pitt's style? Is it that he's really pretty? No. Well, yes, a bit. But mainly no. In fact, Pitt has a long and complicated process that's kept firmly under lock and key.

The star whose name was on everyone's lips at Cannes has a staggering nine films waiting for release
Jessica Chastain may not yet be a household name, but she has achieved a peculiarly 21st-century feat: to be fêted as a movie star, perhaps even the greatest actress of her generation, before the public has had a chance to see any of the work that has generated such excitement.
"Watch out, world!" Elle magazine warned last November, when Chastain was featured in a lavish photo spread devoted to Hollywood's best and brightest upcoming talents. She has starred opposite Al Pacino, Helen Mirren, Ralph Fiennes and Brad Pitt, and impressed them all. She has impeccable credentials, having studied drama at the Juilliard School in New York and honed her skills on stage playing Juliet, Desdemona and Anya in The Cherry Orchard.
She has a face that is classically elegant and eminently malleable...

Back in November, was announced that British up and coming actresses Felicity Jones and Imogen Poots had signed on for Iain Softley’s indie project Trap For Cinderella.
Since then, both Jones and Poots launched big buzz around them – Jones gained critical acclaim for her role in Sundance hit Like Crazy, and previews for this summer’s Fright Night are recommending an exceptional performance from Poots. Jones has been working on David Hare‘s Page Eight, and the comedy Cheerful Weather for the Wedding in the last few months, and was a candidate for the lead role in Snow White and the Huntsman which was finally taken by Kristen Stewart.
Poots seems is ruled out because of scheduling conflicts since she lined up for roles in A Late Quartet, The Laureate and Hello Darkness. And it doesn’t seem to have paid of for Softley, as Jones and Poots are exited,...

At Newsweek and The Daily Beast's Women in the World summit, former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice set aside their differences for a rare and candid talk on women's rights, how Gaddafi's "a nut," and their successor, Hillary Clinton. R.M. Schneiderman and Shushannah Walshe report. Plus, complete coverage of Women in the World and video of the summit's most riveting moments so far.
Rice and Albright were critical of Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi, a leader whom Albright simply described as "a nut." Yet unlike President Clinton, who broke from the Obama administration policy and boldly advocated for a no-fly zone in Libya when he spoke at the summit Thursday evening, both Albright and Rice were more cautious. Neither diplomat would explicitly advocate a no-fly zone or a particular policy that the White House should put in place in light of the fighting going on in the country.

Fgt staffer Rebekah Smith interviews horror actress Rebecca Herod of the film Hellbride.
Rebecca Herod played the leading role of Nicole in indie feature Hellbride (released earlier this year on DVD in the UK and reviewed on Fgt.) As opposed to asking her loads of questions about her experience working on this particular horror film etc, I was interested in finding out more about her job as an actress. You always hear about ‘struggling actresses’ yet very few of them have been asked during interviews why they are struggling and by extension, why they continue to enjoy working in this difficult industry. What follows are very insightful responses to my questions which vividly show how tough it is being an actress and also on the flip side, just how rewarding this career can be.
Why did you want to become an actress?
I have always been a performer. I originally...

Director Sydney Pollack 1934-2008.
Director Sydney Pollack passed two years ago today. I had the good fortune to meet and interview Sydney Pollack twice, both of which are included here: first in 1999 for his well-made but ill-fated romantic drama "Random Hearts," and again in 2006 for what would be his final film, "Sketches of Frank Gehry," a masterful documentary look at the eponymous architect's life, work and process. It was also in many respects a personal investigation for Pollack himself, which he spoke quite candidly about during our conversation.
This has been a tough year for those of us who were weaned on the films of the so-called "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls" who made the iconic films of the late 1960s and 1970s, with the loss of such figures as Pollack, Roy Scheider, and others of the era. Pollack was certainly among the lions of that pack, but was perhaps...

Maybe once a year, a documentary will somehow break through the mass of superhero sequel remakes, prestige Oscar bait, and movies that star Meryl Streep to become a genuine popular success. These films tend to run in two directions: Political-flavored provocations (Bowling for Columbine, An Inconvenient Truth, and Super Size Me), or triumph-of-the-human-spirit cute-porn (Spellbound, Young@Heart, and March of the Penguins). But how about a documentary that combines the two approaches: A film that makes an important societal point, while also making you cry happy inspirational tears? How about a film like Waiting for Superman? (See trailer embedded below.

Nathaniel: Welcome to the 5th annual Oscar Symposium. Each year I invite a handful of smart movie types into my virtual home to decipher, debate and occassionally defenstrate the choices made by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. This year's illustrious panel unintentionally mimics the general geography of AMPAS (Los Angeles / New York / London) if not, one feels free to assume, their psychology. Please welcome: Peter Knegt, Guy Lodge, Karina Longworth, Tim Robey and Sasha Stone.
But we aren't hear to predict.
Who doesn't know that Jeff Bridges, Mo'Nique, Kathryn Bigelow, and Christoph Waltz are taking Oscar to bed on March 7th? The Academy received its Bachelor of Arts And Sciences from The School of Redundancy School.
We're here to gab.
Here's a kick off. Adam Shankman of Hairspray, So You Think You Can Dance and Bringing Down the House fame, who is producing the show this year,...
