Unless you’re the lucky type of movie fan who can completely ignore awards season and just enjoy films without worrying about the behind-the-scenes drama that accompanies this time of year, you probably are well aware of the controversy surrounding the Best Actress nominees at this year’s Oscars. Andrea Riseborough earned a shocking nomination, while Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler were snubbed. But there were other snubs, including in Best Director, where some predicted that Gina Prince-Bythewood would earn a historic nomination for her work on “The Woman King.” Alas, that didn’t come to be, either.

“America’s Got Talent” (“AGT” to the cool kids) went head to head with “Bachelor in Paradise” on Tuesday, when the family-friendly NBC show came out on top. As a result, NBC finished first in primetime. ABC was runner-up in the key demo of adults 18-49, but settled for third place in terms of total viewers. NBC was first in ratings with a 0.7 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 5.2 million, according to preliminary numbers. “America’s Got Talent” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. put up a 0.8 rating and 6.6 million total viewers. At 10, “Capital One College Bowl” had a 0.4 rating and 2.5 million total viewers. “America’s Got Talent” revealed America’s Wildcard winner on Tuesday’s show, with the return of a previously eliminated contestant who beat out several others for a chance at redemption: Storm Large. The third Golden Buzzer of America’s Got Talent Season 16 went to an act that Simon Cowell called “one of the most extraordinary things” he’s seen in all his years as a judge — yet he wasn’t the one who smashed the button.
This week’s lucky act was World Taekwondo, a co-ed group of martial artists who wowed the judges with a synchronized symphony of flips, high kicks and precision. The entire panel was on the edge of its collective seat for the entire audition, and no could say enough good things about the show-stopping display.

"It's the same expression, but two different presentations." Greenwich Ent. has released the official trailer for a music history documentary called All the Streets Are Silent, from filmmaker Jeremy Elkin. The full title is All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip Hop and Skateboarding (1987-1997) – which sounds like an MTV special – and this is premiering at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival coming up soon before it drops in theaters this July. As the title indicates, this is about a specific time in NYC history. Intro from Tribeca: "In the late 80s and early 90s, the streets of downtown Manhattan were the site of a collision between two vibrant subcultures: skateboarding and hip hop. Narrated by Zoo York co-founder Eli Gesner with an original score by legendary hip-hop producer Large Professor (A Tribe Called Quest), All the Streets Are Silent brings to life the magic of the time period and...

Crazy Rich Asians queen Gemma Chan, A-Major and M88 are partnering with podcast media studio Qcode for a table-read of Hold Still, Vincent which is based on the tragic, true events of Vincent Chin’s murder.
Written by Johnny Ngo, directed by twin brothers Aaron and Winston Tao and produced by Bash Naran, the team is eyeing turning this podcast into a feature film.
The story of Vincent Chin is often overlooked in American history. In fact, a lot of anti-Asian racism is overlooked in American history. This particular true story is set in the summer of 1982 in Detroit. Chinese American engineer Vincent Chin was living the American dream until one night when he was assaulted at a bar and killed by two white, disgruntled autoworkers, four days before his wedding. The two white men thought he was Japanese and blamed him for stealing their jobs. They murdered him.

Director Steven Soderbergh and producers Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins will produce the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021, the Academy announced on Tuesday.
The announcement did not specify whether the show would be in-person or virtual, a decision that will not be made until the course of the Covid-19 pandemic is clearer.
While Collins is a television producer with a long history of producing live awards shows like the Grammys, BET Awards and Soul Train Awards and Sher is a veteran producer with Oscar nominations for “Django Unchained” and “Erin Brockovich,” the presence of Soderbergh on the producing team is a surprise and something of a coup for Academy president David Rubin.
Soderbergh, who won the Best Director Oscar for “Traffic” in 2000, is an adventurous and iconoclastic film and television director whose work includes “sex, lies and videotape,” “Contagion,” “Out of Sight,” the “Oceans” movies, “Magic Mike” and the recent...

The Academy has chosen three first-time Oscar producers for the delayed 2021 show: Emmy-nominated Grammy Show producer Jesse Collins will team with filmmakers Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh, who worked together on Oscar-winner “Erin Brockovich,” to produce the 93rd Oscars which, due to the pandemic will air live on ABC and around the world on Sunday, April 25, two months later than usual.
There has been some debate about what form the Oscar show will take, whether in-person or in hybrid form like the Emmys. Clearly, the Academy will do what it takes to keep participants safe. Directing Oscar winner Soderbergh (“Traffic”) has earned recent praise, not only for his filmmaking, but for leading the taskforce at the Directors Guild of America that has set Covid safety guidelines for the industry.

Taika Waititi has a lot of irons in the entertainment industry fire at the moment, and the Kiwi comedy and action visionary has just added another one in Our Flag Means Death, a period-set pirate comedy series, which is headed to HBO Max.
Fresh off a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar win for his starring/directing turn in JoJo Rabbit, Waititi has added the duties of executive-producer and director for the manic maritime madness of Our Flag Means Death to his surreally stacked backlog of shows and films. HBO Max describes the series as being loosely based on the real-life adventures of Stede Bonnet (1688-1718), a pampered Barbados-born aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate in the Caribbean islands, operating as a contemporary of others like the legendary Blackbeard.

Jean Smart is Emmy-nominated for HBO’s “Watchmen,” playing an anti-vigilante FBI agent. It’s yet another of Smart’s surprising performances, tackling offbeat roles and making them distinct and memorable.
Smart became a household name with her five-year run as Charlene on CBS’ “Designing Women,” starting in 1986. But when the sitcom debuted, she had already racked up multiple credits, including guest parts in various series and many theater roles, earning a Tony nomination for playing Marlene Dietrich in Broadway’s “Piaf.”
Since then, she’s played the smart but mentally unstable first lady in “24,” a woman forced into organized crime in FX’s “Fargo,” and films including “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Garden State,” “I Heart Huckabees” and “A Simple Favor.” She has also played onstage in Kaufman & Hart’s “The Man Who Came to Dinner” and Christopher Durang’s “Laughing Wild,” among many others.

If the Fletch reboot movie project was an undercover prostate exam, it would have had ample time to belt out “Moon River” many times over. While such a project was recently revived by Miramax, this time starring Jon Hamm, the process has been one marred by so much difficulty, it has been referred to as a cursed endeavor. It’s a notion to which Bill Lawrence, co-creator of Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, can attest, having once been attached as director for Fletch.
The effort to revive and/or reboot Fletch, the Chevy Chase-starring 1980s comedic detective film franchise based on the late Gregory McDonald’s novels, makes for a lengthy tale. Producer Stacey Sher on Casting 'Mrs. America' and Lessons Learned From 'Out of Sight' and 'Gattaca'
Since the late '80s, producer Stacey Sher has consistently had a hand in film and TV projects that helped define the zeitgeist of their particular era. From Pulp Fiction and Erin Brockovich to Get Shorty and Garden State, the Academy Award nominee's work manages to create a lasting impression. Furthermore, even some of Sher's work that didn't overwhelm at the box office has now reached cult status, something Gattaca and Reality Bites can both attest to currently. While tragic in a way, Steven Soderbergh's 2011 film, Contagion, which Sher produced, is yet another example of this phenomenon as it ...

Mrs America, the Cate Blanchett-fronted drama about the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment and the unexpected backlash led by Phyllis Schlafly, was supposed to exist in a world where Hillary Clinton was President of the United States of America.
Stacey Sher, the producer behind Pulp Fiction and Erin Brockovich, had seen a PBS documentary about the women’s movement in the 1970s in the run-up to the 2016 Presidential election and was interested in making a drama series from the point of view of Schlafly, the beauty queen-turned-conservative crusader.

We knew this was going to happen. By Oscar Sunday, if not before, Greta Gerwig’s feature revival of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women will cross $100 million at the domestic box office, a huge 33% surge in its domestic tally since notching six Oscar nominations on January 13 including Best Picture.
While Gerwig already demonstrated her flair for sophisticated fare coming off the five-time Oscar-nominated Lady Bird three years ago, Little Women just shows the commercial success the filmmaker can spur by giving classics a modern spin. That was the absolute sell in this nth remake of the late 19th century period tale about Jo March and her sisters who plot for a better life outside their snowy Massachusetts home. More upside: a box office hit like this for Gerwig further makes her a brand name among female moviegoers. While she was overlooked in the Directing category at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars,...

Taron Egerton plays Grammy-winning music legend Elton John in the biopic “Rocketman,” and the actor sings his own songs, so it’s not too surprising that he was nominated for a Grammy for performing on the soundtrack. But can he win? It would be reminiscent of Lady Gaga‘s 2019 Grammy victories, which preceded her ultimate Oscar coronation for “A Star is Born.” However, “Rocketman” and “A Star is Born” are now rivals in the race for Best Visual Media Compilation, so Egerton will have to beat Gaga before following in her footsteps.
Lady Gaga’s starring role as an up-and-coming musician in “A Star is Born” brought her her first major recognition for her acting on the big screen, and she also co-wrote the soundtrack, including the centerpiece ballad “Shallow,” her duet with Bradley Cooper that won her Grammys for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Visual Media Song.

Versatile veteran actor and multihyphenate Danny DeVito, whose memorable roles include such projects at TV’s “Taxi” and Miloš Forman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” will receive a Lifetime Achievement award for acting at the Camerimage International Film Festival, which runs in Toruń, Poland, on Nov. 9-16.
In the awards arena, DeVito shared a best picture Oscar nom with Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher as producer on Steven Soderbergh’s “Erin Brokovich” (2001). He also won a Golden Globe as best actor in a supporting role for “Taxi” in 1978.
Camerimage is a cinematography-focused event and festgoers are sure to ask DeVito about his collaborations with such DPs as Oliver Stapleton on Taylor Hackford’s “The Comedian” (2016), Dante Spinotti on Curtis Hanson’s “L.A. “I don’t think we knew it was going to become the thing that it’s become,” admits “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher when asked about all the controversy surrounding the film. “We were certainly aware of the fact that there were going to be a lot of eyes on this movie. We’ve got a trailer for a super crazy movie called The Day Shall Come, starring newcomer Marchánt Davis, Anna Kendrick, Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), and Denis O’Hare, as well as comedian Jim Gaffigan. The film is directed by Christopher Morris, who has directed on the series Veep.
The film looks totally different, and like a really intriguing story. Here’s a rundown for the story it tells:
An impoverished preacher who brings hope to the Miami projects is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea his sponsor works for the FBI who plan to turn him into a criminal by fueling his madcap revolutionary dreams.
I’m extremely interested in this movie, and can’t wait to check it out. Watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think. The Day Shall Come hits theaters on September 27th.

The latest additions to the “Star Wars” cinematic oeuvre have been almost universally beloved (except maybe for “Solo”), but it wasn’t too long ago that expanding the “Star Wars” universe seemed like a terrible idea. While George Lucas is still inexplicably holding firm that Jar Jar Binks is his “Star Wars” favorite character, many fans still remember the crushing disappointment of the polarizing CGI character, and the uneven trilogy that birthed him. There is one person who won’t soon forget the backlash to the prequel films, though not for the same reason.
“It was hard,” Natalie Portman told Empire. “It was a bummer because it felt like people were so excited about new ones and then to have people feel disappointed. Also to be at an age that I didn’t really understand that’s kind of the nature of the beast. When something has that much anticipation it can almost only disappoint.

For cinematographer Lawrence Sher, the focus has always been on the director. That philosophy has carried Sher’s imagery to millions of filmgoers, including his latest work set to hit screens this year: “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” directed by Michael Dougherty, and “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips, who has also collaborated with Sher on all three “Hangover” films. “Whatever success I’ve achieved comes from the fact that I care as deeply about the movie as the director does,” says Sher. “My No. 1 job is to take some of the burden and stress off of their shoulders, and I do that with thorough preparation.”
Sher took an unusual route. An economics major at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, he bypassed film school, moved to Los Angeles and started out as a camera assistant on commercials and music videos. He took any opportunity to shoot, took thousands of stills using motion picture stocks,...

The Interscope record label’s interest in film/music crossover isn’t exactly a secret: With hit companion albums for “A Star Is Born,” “Black Panther” and “La La Land,” they’ve seemed to own the soundtrack space at times in recent years. And the company hasn’t completely made a secret of its desire to move into film production. But with three films premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, they’re ready to go on record as officially being in the movie business with the launch of Interscope Films.
Or re-launch, in a manner of thinking. If “Interscope Films” rings a bell of any kind, it may be because you know your history. Before there was a music company by that name, Ted Fields started Interscope Communications (aka Interscope Pictures) in 1982, before it morphed into the music behemoth we know today in 1990 and the filmmaking component eventually dropped away.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: What is the worst performance by a great actor you usually love?
Carlos Aguilar (@Carlos_Film), The Wrap, Remezcla, MovieMaker Magazine
Collectively, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have been enlisted to enhance films by Almodovar, Spielberg, Larraín, Korine, and, of course, Alfonso Cuarón; in addition to many more efforts by the world’s leading directors. Both have also tried their hand at directing, with Luna having a more notable run behind the camera, and more recently basked in the attention of worldwide mainstream success in the form of “Coco” and “Rogue One.”
Yet, buried underneath that steady stream of good marks and auteur-driven opportunities, most of which this critic has been a champion of, is “Casa de Mi Padre.” Matt Piedmont’s debut feature, a Spanish-language satire starring Will Ferrell,...

Since making it onto the silver screen in “Leon: The Professional,” Natalie Portman has continued to impress and succeed under the spotlight, and then some with directing and producer creds. Before “Vox Lux” hits theaters soon, let’s reflect on the actress’s iconic career trajectory.
Leon (1994)
The Israel-born model turned actress first broke onto the film scene at 13 as the Mathilda in “Leon: The Professional.” Delivering a strong performance as a vengeful apprentice for Jean Reno’s skilled Leon, Portman snagged her first major acting credit – and an impressive one at that.
Beautiful Girls (1996)
Portman showcased her ability to work alongside Hollywood bigwigs like Matt Dillon, Rosie O’Donnell and Uma Thurman. As the smart-talking, teenage Marty, Portman charmed people both on and off screen. This was one of the last roles Portman took on before venturing exploring the Broadway stage as the titular character in “The Diary of Anne Frank.
