Matt Reeves sees Gotham City as an experiment. Which is to say in his version of the Dark Knight mythos, Bruce Wayne is just starting out in his war on crime and the Batman isn’t even sure what he can accomplish yet. However, this sense of experimentation also applies to Reeves’ take on the characters, which as he stressed throughout The Batman DC FanDome event is not an origin story: it will look familiar, and yet be something decidedly more intimate and grittier. From Robert Pattinson’s take on Bruce to its seedy depiction of the villains in the Rogues Gallery.
“This is all an experiment in the movie,” Reeves said. “The idea is that we’re in Year Two, it’s the Gotham experiment; it’s a criminological experiment. He’s trying to figure out what he can do that can finally change this place.”

Sneak Peek new leaked footage, plus images of a motorcycle stunt, ending in a wipe-out, featuring ‘Batman' in costume, doubling for actor Robert Pattinson, on the Glasgow set of "The Batman" stand-alone feature, targeting a June 25, 2021 release:
Cast of the new film also includes Jeffrey Wright, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jayme Lawson, John Turturro and Peter Sarsgaard.
"It's very much a point of view-driven, 'noir Batman' tale," said Reeves.
"It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional.
"It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films.

Director Richard Kelly shot onto the Hollywood scene with the psychological thriller Donnie Darko starring Jake Gyllenhaal in 2001. A few years later, he returned with the fascinating but underwhelming Southland Tales, followed by the odd, cautionary tale The Box. Since then he’s pretty much disappeared, popping up only as a producer for Operation: Endgame […]

Before The Lego Batman Movie, Chris McKay (of Moral Orel, Robot Chicken) was best known as the animation co-director and editor of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s 2014 film, The Lego Movie. His work on the critically acclaimed film earned him the American Cinema Editors Eddie Award for Best Edited Feature Film, Animation, as well as an Annie Award nomination for Best Edited Animation Feature Film. Now, McKay will forever be known as the guy who saved Gotham City’s Caped Crusader from a dark and gritty existence with The Lego Batman Movie, perhaps the best film based on a DC Comics property since 2008’s The Dark Knight, and maybe the best pure Batman movie since Nolan's Batman Begins (2005). The story opens with The Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis, leading a full-scale attack on Gotham City with Batman's vast Rogues Gallery of bad guys, including heavy hitters Bane (Doug...

We are, at the time of writing, exactly one month away from the theatrical release of The Lego Batman Movie – and we couldn’t be more excited.
Chris McKay’s feature-film debut, one produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller of The Lego Movie, heralds the return of Will Arnett’s Caped Crusader, a lonely old vigilante who spends his spare time flaunting his skills in the Batcave – much to the bemusement of Ralph Fiennes’ Alfred. Gotham City is under siege once again, though, and it is Zach Galifianakis’ Clown Prince of Crime that hopes to invoke full-blown anarchy.
He won’t do so alone, however, as The Lego Batman Movie also features many of the iconic villains from Batman’s Rogues Gallery, including the Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin, Bane, Scarecrow, Gentleman Ghost, Calendar Man, the Condiment King and Billy Dee Williams as Two-Face. Rounding out that enviable lineup of pint-sized...

We've already seen a couple of great teaser trailers for The Lego Batman Movie, and now we're finally getting our first look (via USA Today) at the supporting characters that will surround Will Arnett's blocky version of The Dark Knight. He's reprising his role from 2014's The Lego Movie, and in his solo adventure that's directed by Chris McKay, he's joined by Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth, Michael Cera as Robin, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, and Mariah Carey as Mayor Marion Grange.
While another trailer will debut this week during Comic-Con, the outlet has revealed a bit about the plot of the film: Batman doesn't think the Joker is a worthy opponent, and this causes the Joker to lash out:

Harder Candy: Pike Headlines Predictably Exploitative Rape Thriller
It seems Rosamund Pike is now the girl most likely to…. exact ruthless retribution on her instigators, if judging from the latest indie thriller Return to Sender, unfortunately arriving on the heels of her Oscar nominated success in last year’s comparably themed David Fincher film, Gone Girl. But the pedigree of auteur assistance is not on hand with Fouad Mikati’s sophomore effort, his first film since 2010’s Operation: Endgame. Somehow, he amassed a rather respectable cast for this grindhouse knockoff that could have easily premiered on Lifetime if Pike hadn’t suddenly become such a hot commodity. To be fair, we’ll have to wait another year or so to appreciate the actress in some higher quality offerings, and by then this will most likely be forgotten about.
Surgical nurse Miranda Wells (Pike) seems to have a bright future ahead of her.

After scoring an Oscar nomination for her riveting turn in "Gone Girl," Rosamund Pike is back in "Return to Sender" -- and once again, she's got revenge on her mind. Directed by Fouad Mikati ("Operation: Endgame") and co-starring Nick Nolte and Shiloh Fernandez, the film stars Pike as Miranda, "a dedicated nurse, exquisite cake maker and impeccable friend" whose world is shattered when she is brutally assaulted on a blind date. Even after her attacker, William (Shiloh Fernandez, "Evil Dead"), is convicted and locked away for the crime, Miranda can’t overcome the fear and trauma enough to put her orderly life back together. Desperate for closure, she reaches out to William – first through letters, then prison visits – and slowly builds a relationship with him. But when William is paroled and comes looking for her, Miranda seizes the opportunity to exact revenge. In advance of the film's August 14 release in theaters and on VOD,...

For almost the entire running time of this movie, we have no idea what it is about. What is it trying to say? What sort of story is it trying to tell? I’m “biast” (pro): love Rosamund Pike
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
In my head I’m calling this film What Is This I Can’t Even: The Movie. It works at least as well as the blandly generic and not even really apropos Return to Sender, which describes a tiny section of the second act that then resolves itself and has no further bearing on the story. In fact, the bearing it does have on the story hardly makes any sense at all, not on the level of plot, character, or theme. Not that the plot, characters, or putative themes make any sense on a whole-movie level,...

Last fall, Rosamund Pike gave cinema the classic kind of crazy we haven't seen in some time with her turn as Amazing Amy in David Fincher's "Gone Girl." Ruthless, cold, and calculating, she knew how to rig any situation to her benefit, leaving a string of men ruined in her wake. And now, the actress is once again going down the path of vengeance in "Return To Sender," and the first trailer is here. Granted, this movie doesn't look particularly good. Directed by Fouad Mikati ("Operation: Endgame"), and co-starring Shiloh Fernandez, Rumer Willis, and Nick Nolte, the story follows a woman who is viciously assaulted, and then goes on a mission to reclaim her life. It looks like pure B-movie material, but without the precision of Fincher, or the subtext in his movie. But still, Pike looks to be acting circles around everyone else, so maybe it'll be worth tuning in for that.

Kill or be killed. How would you react? James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) peels back the civilized veneer of one company's workforce to see what lies beneath in The Belco Experiment, a screenplay he wrote years ago in which co-workers are forced to slay one another or bite the bullet themselves. Gunn's carnage on the printed page will now come to life with a familiar face behind the camera, as Gunn has announced that The Belco Experiment is moving forward at MGM with Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, Wolf Creek 2) in the director's chair.
Below is Gunn's official announcement from his Facebook page. Pre-production on the horror-thriller is underway and shooting is slated to start in Colombia this June. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates on The Belco Experiment, which sounds a little like Operation: Endgame with a horror twist:

Fouad Mikati, director of the cartoonish action flick Operation: Endgame is switching up genres for his second film, the psychological thriller Return to Sender. Having just Rosamund Pike and Nick Noltecast its lead roles last week, the film is already in production in New Orleans. Because a movie with only two people in it usually isn.t fun, the rest of the cast was filled out today, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Camryn Manheim, Rumer Willis and Illeana Douglas are all set to join Rosamund Pike, Shiloh Fernandez and Nick Nolte for the film. Manheim is of course known for her man years on the series The Practice and Ghost Whisperer and her last feature role was in Cornelia Moore.s adaptation of the novel Camilla Dickinson. Patricia Beauchamp and Joe Gossett gave a screenplay to the postman, he put it in his sack, and bright and early the next morning... it was being filmed with Rosamund Pike, Shiloh Fernandez and Nick Nolte. Well Ok, maybe that isn't quite how Return To Sender found itself in production, but it's underway nevertheless, under the directorial eye of Fouad Mikati (Operation: Endgame). Not quite the Elvis-based rom-com its title might imply, this Return To Sender sounds a bit more sinister. It involves an uptight nurse in a small town (Pike) whose life changes irrevocably after a blind date with a guy (Fernandez) who turns out not to be all he seems. In the aftermath, Pike gets violent revenge on the person who set the date up has to rebuild her life and get back to being who she used to be. Nolte will be playing her father.THR's description...

Thoughts by Tsr: I keep waiting for this film to stumble and convince me it won’t be any good. That’s not the attitude I want to have, but dusting off these characters after so many years just doesn’t seem like it should work. And yet, I’ve enjoyed just about everything I’ve seen from American Reunion.
The word choice there is the key. I said I’ve enjoyed everything, which is true. What I didn’t say is that I’ve found everything hilarious. Both this and the photobooth teaser work on a nostalgic level, but there hasn’t been much in the way of outright laughs. A trailer for a film like this can have difficulties being overly funny...

Thoughts by Tsr: Family gatherings are often love/hate affairs, and that is one thing this trailer for Another Happy Day captures nicely. There is a messiness, a certain level of ‘who knows what’s going to happen next?’ to this trailer that I really appreciate. Between the music playing under the action, and the various conflicts at play, this is a surprisingly effective trailer for a film I had little interest in until now.
Another thing the film really has working in its favor is an excellent cast. Ellen Barkin is certainly a stand out, but Ezra Miller looks equally good as Barkin’s son who has been in rehab multiple times. I’m beyond excited to see what he does...

New poster for Another Happy Day, starring Ellen Barkin, Ezra Miller, Kate Bosworth, Demi Moore and Thomas Haden Church. Sam Levinson makes his directorial debut on the drama, helming from his own script. In Another Happy Day, a wedding at her parents' Annapolis estate hurls high-strung Lynn (Ellen Barkin) into the center of touchy family dynamics. Another Happy Day marks Levinson's second script after Operation: Endgame, which also starred Ellen Barkin as well as Joe Anderson, Rob Corddry, Odette Annable (Yustman), Zach Glaifianakis and Maggie Q. The film opens November 4th via Phase4 Films.

Writer/director Sam Levinson has opened up about his love for girlfriend Ellen Barkin, insisting the straight-talking veteran actress is "not that tough" in real life.
The couple's romance hit the headlines earlier this year, when it emerged the Ocean's Thirteen star, 57, was dating the 26-year-old son of famed moviemaker Barry Levinson, the director who launched her film career in 1980s film Diner.
The pair is said to have met while Sam was writing Barkin's 2010 film Operation: Endgame and the actress was subsequently cast as the lead of Sam's latest movie, Another Happy Day.
Now the young Levinson has confirmed they are dating and living together in New York, and he's adamant Barkin is nothing like the hard characters she plays onscreen.
He tells the New York Daily News, "We've been together for like, three years, under the radar. You know, when you get to know her, she's not that tough. She's beautiful and intelligent and we live creatively together."
Barkin was previously married to Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, with whom she has two kids, and her second union to businessman Ronald Perelman ended in a messy divorce in 2006.

To celebrate the release of Operation: Endgame out on DVD and Blu Ray on February 21st, we have put together the best of star Rob Corddrys funniest gags and one liners!
Rob Corddry starring as the hilarious Ron Fox in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay:
Ron Fox: What’s up with the guy with the weird eyes? He handicapped or something?
Deputy Frye: We believe he’s of Korean decent.
Ron Fox: My God. North Korea and Al Qaeda working together. This is bigger than I thought.
Harold Lee: Can we have the right to make a phone call?
Ron Fox: Oh, yeah. Yeah, I’m sorry. You want rights now. You want freedoms. Right now. Is it time? Is it freedom o’clock?
Corddry starred alongside Ben Stiller in the romantic comedy The Heartbreak Kid
Oh, I got a thing for Ellen DeGeneres though.

Red: "Robert Schwentke's Red comes at a bit of an inopportune time. This year has seen a surprising overload of "group of killers and their hijinks" movies -- The Losers, The Expendables, Operation: Endgame, The A-Team -- all movies about with very similar concepts. They're all humorous films about assassins/government operatives/mercenaries who get betrayed in some fashion, and are forced to gather together and shoot people and blow things up in an effort to clear their name. Being the last one on the list doesn't help things, either. That said, Red has a few things going for it. It's easily the most talented cast, the premise is a little more original, and it's tongue-in-cheek humor is a little less broad and a little more clever." - Tk

Frenemy
Directed by: Gregory Dark
Cast: Matthew Modine, Callum Blue, Adam Baldwin, Lisa Brenner, Zach Galifianakis
Running Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: December 14, 2010
Plot: Two men wander around Los Angeles after surviving a bank robbery at a porn store while discussing the possibilities of destiny intervening with their traumatic moment.
Who’S It For? People who are dedicated to finishing an entire movie, even if it appears that nothing is happening for a large chunk of it (even if the movie is only seventy-six minutes long).
Movie:
Talk doesn’t have to be cheap. Thousands of films, (especially those by Tarantino, who is idealized here in both conversational topics and soundtrack), can have an audience fully on board just with walking and talking heads discussing anything. From Ingmar Bergman’s three-hour long Scenes From A Marriage to Kevin Smith’s Clerk’s 2, no one has to...

The 2011 Sundance Film Festival, which will run from Jan. 20 to 30, 2011 in and around Park City, Utah, announced its dramatic and documentary in-competition line-up today. In a break with tradition, there will be no opening night film; instead one narrative and documentary film from the U.S. and World competitions will each screen on the first night. Highlights from the 16 films in the U.S. dramatic competition, culled from 1,102 submissions, include:
Higher Ground — The directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), about a mother who joins a fundamentalist community, and starring Farmiga, Joshua Leonard (Humpday), and John Hawkes...

Are you sick of Zach Galifianakis yet? Based on the mixed reviews of Due Date, I'd say that the backlash is already well underway, but that hasn't stopped him from trying to squeeze as much as he can out of the window of opportunity that The Hangover has provided him with. The man has appeared in at least five movies this year, and now there is yet another one due to hit store shelves before the end of the year. Yes, that's right, the movie is called Frenemy and it is another direct-to-dvd affair, not unlike Operation: Endgame which Anchor Bay also released this past summer. It seems like the kind of low budget stuff you should be avoiding once you're a big star, but what do I know? The movie is directed by Gregory Dark, who also did the Kane horror flick See No Evil, which is probably not a good sign.

Everyone knows that Hollywood Word Jumble is a favorite game of ours. Every now and then, we seem to see ideas thrown into a blender, then the blender is thrown into a bigger blender, then shot into space. What falls to Earth is then used for movie ideas.
Apparently, writer/director Chris Rossi applied a similar idea for the casting of Lives Of Saints, a film about "intertwining story lines about a group of Angelinos seeking redemption for past mistakes."
(pleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrash pleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrash pleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrash pleasedon'tbelikeCrashpleasedon'tbelikeCrash pleasedon'tbelikeCrash)
Ahem.
Anyway, shooting for Rossi's film starts next month. The cast couldn't be any more goddamn random: John Lithgow, Kat Dennings, Joe Anderson, Meg Ryan, Anthony Anderson, Esai Morales and Curtis "50 Fuckin' Cent" Jackson are all featured. That's a bizarre friggin' cast, but there's some solid talent in there. Kat Dennings is criminally underused, and not just because I have an embarrassing crush on her.

Seriously, ladies. Have movies taught you nothing? Pretty girls, particularly skinny white ones, should basically never leave the house, because whenever they do, hillbillies or mutants or killer rape-o's or something is going to hunt you down and seriously mess up your shit.
All of which brings us to And Soon The Darkness, the new movie (it's actually a remake of a 1970 British thriller of the same name) starring two very pretty girls, Odette Yustman and Amber Heard, who dress sexily and travel to far-off lands, which by Hollywood reasoning means they might as well just shoot themselves. Otherwise, Yustman will go missing (she is after all, the sluttier of the two), and Heard will have to run around screeching and trusting the wrong people and I'm fairly certain she's going to stumble and fall down at a very inopportune moment.
I guess what I'm saying is, this looks like derivative crap.

I’ve spent so much time staring at Rob Corddry’s shiny pate this year, I’m amazed I haven’t gone blind. Just last night I was watching him play a sleazy lawyer on Community and, of course, a few months back the Daily Show graduate starred in Hot Tub Time Machine. While recently researching an interview with Adam Scott, I even caught Corddry fighting the Piranha 3D star in the oddly colon-ized and just plain bizarre movie Operation: Endgame. And if you’re thinking, “Well, that’s an odd pair of pugilists!” then you clearly haven’t seen this straight-to-video effort,...

Directed by: Tom Hooper
Starring: Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush
Rating: R
Release Date: November 24, 2010
Trailer Score: 8/10
My Thoughts: I’m always wary of movies that brag about their Oscar buzz from the get go. Then again, it might be the case that they’re still trying to make up for Colin Firth not getting the Oscar for his memorable performance in A Single Man. AMPAS always seems to be trying to make up for something with their Oscar politics, but that’s neither here nor there. For what it’s worth, this one actually seems to be worth the Oscar buzz. In a day and age where just about every other story is a remake, The King’s Speech seems to bring a breath of fresh air. More importantly, it’s exactly the type of charming and quirky story that made me love...

Zach Galifiniakis has been busy signing on for films like "Due Date," "Operation: Endgame" and "It's Kind of a Funny Story" recently. You may wonder how he selects those roles, though. The "Hangover" star broke down some key questions that go through his head and also explained what it's like working under directing partners Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck in the story about a young man's stay in an adult psychiatric ward.
"I had a few questions," Galifiniakis told MTV News. "The first one was 'When are the lunch breaks? How long are the lunch breaks? And is this a Pixar film?' Because those are my three rules."
Pixar may be sad to hear that news. On a more serious note, though, he said that Boden and Fleck were a key factor in getting him onboard.

Lake Placid 3 – Red Band Trailer
Directed by: Griff Furst
Starring: Colin Ferguson, Yancy Butler, Michael Ironside
Rating: Ur
Release Date: October 26, 2010 (DVD)
Trailer Score: 5/10
My Thoughts: As a film kid, it’s nice to get in some quality campy/trashy in on my downtime. Well, that and I have to say that Lake Placid is definitely up there on my list of favorite creature features. It’s a shame this one won’t have Betty White like the original, but I’ll live. Instead, this trailer supplies plenty of flesh for the hormone driven young males (well, at least the straight ones) and enough violence to at least intrigue most self-respecting horror fans. Does it look like the best plot? Not really. In fact, it’s kind of hard to tell what the plot is besides the whole “there’s a mean crocodile where no mean crocodiles should be.

Since bursting onto the screen with his surreal performance in The Hangover, Zach Galifianakis has been slowly but surely building up a pretty hefty roster of projects.
As well as roles in Dinner for Schmucks, Operation Endgame and It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Galifianakis is now, as reported by Deadline, on board a new Dreamworks comedy going by the name “Reply All” . Reply All was pitched to Dreamworks as a star vehicle for Galifianakis (and no, that doesn’t get any easier to type), with the script to be written by Phil Johnston (upcoming comedy Cedar Rapids). Johnston and Galifianakis will both produce as well.
All we currently know of the plot is that Galifianakis will play the recipient of an indiscreet e-mail, who must deal with the repercussions of his ill-conceived decision to click “Reply All”. We can only assume that much mirth and misfortune will ensue.

Director Fouad Mikati's Operation Endgame throws a variety of strange and frequently pointless twists at you, but the general story is this: What if there was an office -- a drab, windowless, glumly lit administrative hellhole, filled with full-blown psychotics trying to kill each other? Before the building explodes? That's the essence of the film. There's a top-secret government organization called The Factory, comprised of two factions of operatives, the Alpha and Omega teams. From what I could tell from the film's somewhat cryptic opening exposition, both groups work as spooks and killers for the Us government, but actually spend most of their time working against each other.
Regardless, the film takes place on the first day of a new recruit, Fool (their codenames are all based on Tarot cards), played capably by Joe Anderson (who, after seeing him in The Crazies, I've realized is an absolute friggin' chameleon...

It seems that Zach Galifianakis is popping up everywhere these days. According to Deadline, the Hollywood funny man has persuaded Dreamworks to buy the rights for Reply All.
With Dinner for Schmucks and Due Date due to be realeased, not forgetting Operation Endgame and It's Kind of a Funny Story, as well as the sequel to The Hangover due to begin filming soon, Galifianakis is making sure he makes as many films whilst he is still funny - as Adam Sandler knows only too well, you can stop making people laugh at any time...
Reply All centres on a man who gets an email, and then accidentally replies to all (would never have guessed!), with chaos ensuing as a consequence. It is thought that Galifianakis will also produce the movie, whilst Phil Johnston has been hired to write the script. Let's hope he writes a good one!
