I mean, it was great I guess

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode but the way it ended kind of made me go what??...seriously??...the way this episode ended was just not right in my own opinion, spear didn't go through this whole season, fighting for his life and protecting the ones that he loves just to have an ending that was so rushed, that it really made me disappointed on not only this episode as a whole but mostly disappointed at the creators...they could've done so much better than this and killing off the main character in such a rushed way was just not right. Don't get me wrong guys...I didn't hate this episode at all, it was just the way it ended, so bad and just so disappointing.

Great story that felt rushed at the end
RedMinn18 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First the positives; the series is outstanding, holding up to any of the current fantasy dramas. It was exciting to watch as a viewer, and there was no issue being invested in the characters and plot lines up to the end. The interwoven ultra-violent Alley Oop meets Conan the Barbarian is completely unique and works with the fantastical gods, beasts and Neolithic European and African characters.

For the negative, the final pacing felt rushed at the end of the episode after giving a prior three-episode arc with the Vikings and another with the Egyptians. It was understandable to show the harshness of his father getting killed and highlighting the reality and fact that he was still wild and did not fit in with civilization. The quick pace of the Chieftain appearing and turning into Conan's Thulsa Doom snake culminating in the final mountaintop battle felt overly fast after all the prior buildup. One could not help but wonder if it was paced for timing only to cram everything into a single half-hour episode.

If the one-off 'Primal Theory' episode was introduced as a separate special, then that might have allowed for one episode to open up a heavier closure for the audience a la Gladiator's fingertip Elysium wheat fields or Braveheart's "freeedooom" crescendo with his angelic slain lover beckoning from the crowd. Additionally, after all Spear has done for Mira, he has to turn himself into a charcoal briquette in order to get any intimacy from her? That moment of tenderness could have been shared after Mira discovered him sleeping after scrawling the cave paintings (which surprisingly did not reference much of his other extensive ship battles) on the wall of the Nubian abode. That sequence change would've allowed for a more believable 'mating' sequence. Not only when he was on the verge of death, but he just may not have had enough of the plumbing left to perform the task seeing his nose burnt off. The same tenderness of him calling out to her could've landed with more impact into the ending reveal without them mating in his condition.

Regardless, the show has had an excellent first two seasons and hopefully it comes back for another in whatever form or setting as Tartakovsky's work is utterly amazing.

A way to send off our Favorite Neanderthal

Warning: Spoilers
Still a fantastic episode. Not really sure what people expected Fang and Spear to do against the fire giant. Who was a formidable foe over anything they went against. Considerably. Did we expect some long drawn out battle? I didn't how. How would that even happen? They are just flesh and bone. Its a quick battle no matter how you slice it. We got Mira and Spear back story. FINALLY!! I did appreciate the little shot of Fangs face as she saw the fire snake. Still suffering from the PTSD sustained in the first season.

Even with this weaker final this season was all around great. RIP Spear! Hope you are reunited with your past family. Where ever they are.

Really a Masterpiece

Warning: Spoilers
Once the episode started with Spear's flashback, I thought "great we're finally getting to know why spear is the way he is". As the scene went along I saw it was setting up some type of harrowing foreshadow, referring to Spear's dad.

I don't know why we say "looking forward to this episode/finale" knowing what type of show we're watching. And that this show is unforgiving.

As the episode continued it was painfully obvious that the entire tone was ominous even though the situation the gang was in was considered "safe". Strung together with moments of Spear and Fang's (+babies) unwavering dynamic, along with emotional moments of Spear re-telling his journey through cave paintings, finishing off with a heart-strung action packed fight, this episode was 100 percent perfect and encapsulates everything that Primal is about.

Spear's story is sadly over yes. But Fang and Spear cheated and beat death multiple times, so it was only fitting for his story. And he also went out the way he wanted to, protecting his only family. This was emphasized when Fang was being burned alive, Spear went full Primal to ensure everyone else' futures.

R. I. P Spear, and looking forward to new adventures with Mira, Lil Spear, and the lil Fangs. Genndy, i'm pretty sure is ready to knock S3 out the park as well.

Spear gets the perfect man death
dlracer217 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure if I'm upset that the series jumped the shark or not because the human elements have always been right there.

When this all first started, it all seemed rather plausible in an established reality of planet Earth a million years ago and such. It totally gave up a couple episodes into a season one and I almost did too because I'm a bit too much of a writing snob to get invested into the Transformers, or a Sonic the Hedgehog.

This series does ask you to suspend your disbelief, but not for the sake of low-brow fairy tales. Yes, there are some cringe worthy nuances, but the soul of the story is never self-flatulating.

This is an epic saga exploring the driving force behind a man's primitive machismo. He is always an island to himself, but even the toughest and most noblest specimens of testosterone fueled manhood have a common weakness.

A strong man willing to lay his conviction on the line will ALWAYS fight to the death and beyond for his beloved doggo.

Warning: Spoilers
Gendy leaves enough room with this finale to invite a 3rd season of one of your favorite shows and our protagonists stay true to their journeys in the end OR Primal is cancelled, as shows are, and you have a fine ending for now.....People will say they wanted another 24 more minutes for this season instead of The Primal Theory but that episode holds its own. My favorite opening in all of season 2 was the first few minutes of Collosaeus 3. I really wanted to see the oars and Gendy delivered. There is similar satisfaction in this episode watching Fang's offspring learn to swim. These aren't the decisions of someone who rushed the end. Whatever people expected of this episode, it would have been pretty impossible for it to match The Red Mist or others yet the Snake scene in this one was one of my favorite fight sequences of Season 2. Critics who want a longer fight maybe aren't appreciating all the battles Spear and Fang have won. To me, this is a thoughtful ending to another chapter of Primal.

Once again I feel that Gendy has offered viewers a masterclass on storyboarding and original storytelling. Primal is expressive and among the best of western serialized animation.

Those who insist Gendy rushed the end might say the same about Samurai Jack. I happened to think the last season and end of Samurai Jack was pretty amazing. One of my favorite endings to any show at the time. Both Jack and Spear are unbendable characters able to persevere because of their obligation/responsibility. They are beautiful and tragic heroes. Season 2 was an absolute pleasure.

Genndy Tartakovsky your fired.

Come on hes tougher than that, great ending that brings a warm fuzzy feeling to my heathen heart.

Great flash backs....and then well i wont spoil the ending. Like Conan the barbarian didn't make from the village sucks....but he did and it was epic adventures. My number #1 toon.....fang reminds me of my old gal ..a red heeler....so ill be watching this series till i get to see her again.

Such a great story(s); so deep in thought and creativity. I am really hoping for several more seasons...such a big world to explore and so many adventures to tell. As cartoon lover since before bugs bunny looney toons hour sunday after noons or saturday am, This is a will be a classic.

Slightly disappointed with the climax, but still a good episode
darkviking21218 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sure many will watch this episode with mixed feelings, but I appreciate it for not following a cookie-cutter pattern of other shows.

In the last episode we see Demon Chieftain walking across the sea coming upon the liberated Colossaeus. This episode opens with Spear and the gang coming ashore to Mira's home. What happens to the crew of the Colossaeus is never shown, we don't know if Demon Chieftain slaughtered them or just walked by.

Most of this episode is quite light, just Spear and Fang settling in with Mira's people. We do see some back story of Spear when his father lost his life fighting a pride of saber-tooth tigers and Mira being captured into slavery. When the Demon Chieftain finally shows up, I actually thought they were going to leave on a cliffhanger leading into season three, but I was wrong.

Demon Chieftain shows his great power in fighting Spear and Fang, even shape-shifting into a giant snake and cornering them on a mountain top. Demon Chieftain flames Fang and Spear, and Spear lunges at Demon Chieftain, sending both plunging to the bottom of the mountain. Demon Chieftain is injured, but just about when he was going to attack a giant hand emerges from the ground and drags Chieftain back to hell. I'm not sure if Chieftain was taken because he failed and was punished, or succeeded in killing Spear and thus the pact was complete and he then had to give up the soul he sold for revenge.

And that was it, the entire fight. Spear is then seen in the village as a crispy critter, and the healer indicates Spear will not make it. Mira, seeing a series of paintings Spear made in his hut, decides to continue Spear's bloodline and mounts him. Yes, she has sex with an almost-dead Spear, whose manhood apparently survived the burning intact enough to still function.

The last scene is Fang and her children now grown up, with Mira next to them and Spear's daughter atop of one. The end.

As of this review, a season three has not been announced. But seeing Primal won the 2021 Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Series, I would be shocked if it did not continue. The next season will probably focus on Spear's daughter, but we never did see Spear die. There was no funeral or grave, so maybe he is still alive. And the Chieftain could even return. Overall a great ride, and I hope it does not end.

Warning: Spoilers
Solid 10/10. It was great seeing spears dad in the opening scene and how he was a more primitive ape- human then spear. I love the scene where young spear bashes the sabertooths head in with the rock out of revenge for his dad and the gore that went with it was cool for an animated series. I absolutely love the ending where after spear is burned he gets it in with Mira, I kind of thought he's gonna knock her up and the last scene was great almost made want to tear up. Seeing the baby dinosaurs grown up to be strong beasts like their mother fang with their mixed red and blue colors of their parents and the young daughter of spear and mira riding one of them. Only take away is I wasn't a big fan of the Mira character so idk how season 3 will be without spear and only the 2 girls. I think they will incorporate a new man for Mira that will replace spear. Spear was such an awesome character I don't think they will ever be able to really replace or top him. His big strong savagery and his kind heart towards his family friends and pets with his willingness to put his life on the line to protect them anytime needed was awesome. It was super sad to see him go. I also really liked the cave drawing scene. Was so cool how it showed him making those red hand prints by blowing red dust at his hand pressed against the wall just like they find in ancient cave sites all around the world. I really liked everything about this series and season 2 was even better then the first awesome season.

Genndy still doesn't know how to tie the bow
Smaakmaker17 September 2022
This episode should've been a two-parter. Similar to Samurai Jack, the final confrontation feels rushed. The whole thing gets resolved in less than two minutes of screentime, making it feel very underwhelming. Genndy has made this mistake before, which makes it even less forgivable. He paces the start/middle out excellently, but then rushes the ending and makes it fall flat.

This could be because of budget constraints, but that's beyond the scope of this review. If a season 3 comes along, I'll watch it, but my expectations for Genndy's work have lowered with this season's finale. I hope next time he's able to tie the bow.

Warning: Spoilers
It's too early to move on from spear.

I just hope that final scene was to mislead the audience into thinking he's dead. With all the supernatural elements in the series, I really thought miras healer would pull off some magic. But alas not from what we see..... but I hope it's a bait n switch for next season with spear training his teenage child/children and have a less adventure based season as spears last one if the plan is to stay with this family/genetic origins (maybe where that odd ep with the escaped murderer) but move on from him and fang... if spear is truly dead.. I have not let that sunk in yet at all.

Season 2 goes out not with a bang but a whimper
remyrc17 September 2022
Season 1 was one of the best shows on TV but season 2 has only shown that Genndy, as much as I love him, struggles with narrative focused storytelling. The finale is too reminiscent of Samurai Jack Season 5 and its rushed nature. Everything is just sped through and the big confrontation ends hilariously quick. I don't know what it is about Genndy but the writing seems to really dip when it all has to lead somewhere. Most of this season has been spent having Spear and Mira smile at each other and random contrived drama that forces them all to fight for survival. It all just feels white noise and very uninspired storytelling.

It's just left a sour taste in my mouth.

Rushed

Warning: Spoilers
What can else can I say? The ending felt rushed. And now I'm going into spoiler territory.

1st part, antagonist death

they kill the antagonist (viking guy), yeah okay. But the way they do it??? He dies in a few seconds, HOW IS THAT SATISFYING? We have seen this guy become devastated over his dead family, and willing to die to see them. But reborn in the flames of hell to avenge the ones he's lost. And what happens when he gets revenge? He just dies, like WHAT? You've been building up a character for many episodes, just to end him? Like that? At least for my opinion the battle should've lasted longer and he accepting his revenge, but showing his familiars, his family. And realizing that it hadn't done nothing as he slowly sinks into hell. (that's my opinion though)

2nd part, spears death

this one I am PRETTY MAD about, spear goes out in a ball of fire and dies (also gets death humped but about that later) It TOO feels rushed, his death was fast, and you can have a surprise kill off I'm okay with that. BUT IN REASON. It does make sense that spear was angry about fang being hurt, BUT APE CRAZY? Fang was just on fire and they didn't even show fang badly hurt, so I don't see how this makes spear ape mad. Spear should have been at least smart enough to not just ram into THE DEVILS FIRE.

3rd part, Mira humps nearly dead body

LIKE WHAT??? WHAT KIND OF DRUGS ARE YOU ON??? You're telling me that Mira was willing to hump almost dead spear. Why couldn't we just have a nice scene where spear is live and dandy and they hint to them making offspring? Though this wasn't likely so i'ma make a better scenario. Spear is still dying but less scared, they do that shining eye thing then spear nods his head. As they get a room so we don't have to see them doing the "stuff" then showing the grave of his death. But mainly Mira humping dead body = make me mad.

TL;DR

viking guy death too early.

Spear death too fast and dumb Mira Fricking nearly dead Spear.

Don't you ever feel sorry for Spear
deli-op-198624 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Primal has one rule and applies to everyone. Unexpected brutal death. Don't you ever feel sorry for Spear... Mira... Let the man die in peace... let the man die with the burden of his choices... let the man die with dignity.

And don't you worry, Spear will not be forgotten. Because he is the beast in men's heart. A beast that doesn't want to be tamed. To tame it is to kill it Mira, or to make it kill you... or hate you... And I know that what you did was the right thing for you, and I wish you the best with all my heart. But... and I'm sorry to tell you this Mira... I don't care about you... I really don't.

Yikes...

Warning: Spoilers
Hoo boy...This was an abysmal ending to the second season and possibly to the entire series.

Quick recap - everything was amazing up until the final 10 minutes of this episode. The world building, the characters, the animation, everything was top tier. This has to be one of the worst finale episodes I've ever seen, and really it just all falls apart in the last 10 minutes.

Why on Earth would they have the final battle between Spear and Mega Fire Demon be so anti-climatic? It just felt so poorly done and this should have been an episode in and of itself, not about seven minutes of a pretty blah battle.

The end scene of Mira on top of Spear is one of the most cringe things I have ever seen. The dude has third and fourth degree burns on his entire body and we get a freaking sex scene!? Why did they just not have the sex scene the night before, it would have made total sense. It was just disgusting and so poorly thought out...have the people who write and animate this show even understand how nonsensical this was?

Terrible ending to a show that was flawless up until the last ten minutes of this terrible finale (even the weird one-off episode in the middle of season 2 was fine). Possibly one of the worst endings to a show of all time because this was a 10/10 show up until this.

I don't know how to feel about this ending
Mills_444417 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well this episode definitely was a conclusion to the whole Viking arc with vidar and having the big final fight. The burning scene where he's fighting the demon and just able to survive that is unrealistic. I don't care if this show is fake a human can't survive that but I guess I have to let it slide a little cool scene. Now where to start with this ending... oh boy not only is Spear on the edge of dying Mira just decided to have intercourse with him out of nowhere. I honestly couldn't stop laughing that scene was absolutely ridiculous and killed it for me. I did not like the time jump at the end of the ep this is definitely the downfall of primal sadly.

Burning Spear : What A Rush !!!
bishopokullu18 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a great disservice to loyal fans. A strong story with weakened final episodes. The season finale is a total let down with plot holes that if filled would have brought the season to a satisfactory end.

1) What happened between The Viking, Kamau and The Freed Slaves ?

2) Why didn't a famished Fang have Amara for breakfast by the pool ?

3) Did Spear actually kill a dead superhuman easily with blows ?

This all felt rushed as if the creative team behind the show were under pressure.

Lets hope this was an edited version of a complete 3 part season finale that will be released in the near future you owe us - the fans - a better conclusion.

What?! That ending was so jarring, what happened?
thefoochie18 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Normally I talk about the episode in the order of the events, but I have to talk about the end of this episode first because I'm not even sure what I just saw.

So spear is on the verge of death and was burnt to a crisp, and Mira randomly decides to start having sex with him?! I mean what was that. This scene made me extremely uncomfortable for 2 reasons. 1. Spear couldn't consent because he was on the verge of death! And 2. Out of all the possible times, why would Mira choose to have sex with spear when he was burnt alive! Okay, sure, you could make the argument that Mira did it cause it was her only opportunity since Spear was about to die, but this still felt super awkward and weird.

Then all of a sudden it randomly cuts to a flash forward, and it shows Mira, spear's daughter, fang and her two kids who are now grown up. Then the episode ends. This was honestly so off-putting that I honestly can't believe it's real. Even at this show's worst, I could always believe that what I was seeing was made intentionally. But this? The last 5 minutes look like they were written in 2 minutes on a first draft! And what makes it even worse is that it was the series finale! I genuinely think the writers gave up.

Now, on to the rest of the episode. The beginning is good... but it's all downhill from there. I liked seeing spear become the leader of his tribe after he defended them against some tigers. It shows that violence was always a part of his life even when he was a little kid. Mira's flashback was fine too. We finally see how she become a slave and how she was separated from her loved ones.

The rest of the episode wasn't terrible, just really boring. The main cast finds Mira's village and she reunites with her friends. All the villagers are scared of fang so she is unable to get along with them. This part just doesn't seem believable to me. The villagers are just gonna let fang and her kids sleep in their home? And don't say, "but Mira told the villagers she was friendly!" Okay? That doesn't mean the villagers should believe her and be okay with letting a t-Rex roam around their village!

This episode had some painfully bad comedy, too. There's a scene sometime at the beginning where fang repeatedly stops her kid from going into the water, and it's just soooo overly dragged out and tedious. There's also a scene later on where spear invites fang to sleep in his house so she breaks through the door. I'm not sure if this was trying to be funny, but I'm kinda mad that none of the villagers cared that, and lemme restate it, a t-Rex, broke one of their structures.

Now let's get to arguably the worst part of the episode. The fight scene. So spear and fang face off against the Viking dude who was turned into a flame monster (still one of the worst scenes in the show. Colossaeus part 1 aired 3 weeks ago and I'm still not over that part). The flame monster sets both of them on fire! And yet they still are able to fight him. Spear, who again, is on fire, tackles the flame monster off a cliff. So not only does spear survive getting set on fire by a creature from hell, but he survives falling off a cliff too! This is so dumb, how can anyone take this show seriously. After both of them fall off a cliff, the flame monster is dragged back to hell. Why? Who knows! None of this makes any sense. Why did satan hire someone to kill spear and fang, and then once they're almost dead, decide to drag that person back? Did he change his mind? Was it even satan who dragged him back down? We'll never know the answers to any of the questions and we're expected to roll with it. The fact that satan wanted two mortals dead so badly doesn't even make sense in the first place, so this whole plot line was contrived from the beginning.

Then, literally 90 seconds in the runtime after spear was burnt alive, Mira is having sex with him. And this works....how exactly? Didn't the guy just get set on fire! And somehow he's in a peeeerfectly healthy condition to be procreating. I swear, none of this episode makes any sense, I can't believe professional writers wrote this and thought it was okay. Although (spoilers for attack on Titan) armin surviving getting burnt to a crisp was a little silly, at least his survival made sense because of the Titan syringe. This on the other hand, was absolutely not plausible. Or any of this episode. Or any of this show. Sorry for this rant, I'm just so angry. I pray to god the rumors are true that this was the series finale, cause I've had enough of this show. 1/10, probably the worst way genndy could've ended the show. Goodbye, primal. I won't miss you.

1 Star For The Super Rushed Ending
beanslegit19 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Good good what the hell happened to the shows creators between seasons 1 and 2? Steady decline in animation quality aside the plot became way too complicated. We all just want to see spear and fang be badass and have violent adventures.

So the main issues:

The Viking guy who was reborn in hell and sent by satan himself back up to the world to avenge his murdered family gets his ass kicked instantly by means of satan ex machina... Seriously?!

Spear the main character gets 3rd degree burns across his entire body including his junk, gets sat on and sexed by Mira... WTAF?! And then just dies... Weakest ending to a show I've seen in a long time.

What a disappointment.
