There are lots of folks who are concerned about the privacy factors surrounding DNA testing services like Ancestry and 23&Me. Do they keep your DNA info? Can they sell it? There are valid concerns. But what people aren’t thinking about is the fear that you will reconnect with previously unknown relatives who invite you to a creepy countryside manor in the UK and try to murder you in some ritual. Thankfully, “The Invitation” is here to serve as a cautionary tale.

"As you all know, there has been someone missing from this table." Screen Gems has revealed the official trailer for a sneaky new British horror thriller titled The Invitation, from Australian filmmaker Jessica M. Thompson. Also known as The Bride, this takes place in England, but was filmed in Hungary crazy enough. Not to be confused with the other indie horror hit also titled The Invitation from 2015. A young woman discovers through a DNA test that she has a long lost, "very white" cousin, who invites her out to a lavish wedding in the English countryside. But she soon discovers that "a gothic conspiracy is afoot" involving her family's history. Nathalie Emmanuel stars as Evie, with Thomas Doherty, Stephanie Corneliussen, Alana Boden, Courtney Taylor, Hugh Skinner, and Sean Pertwee. This starts like Get Out but turns into something much creepier at the dinner. Does it give away who they are,...

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

Director Karyn Kusama (“Jennifer’s Body“) has recently been making quite the career comeback with films such as “The Invitation” and the Nicole Kidman cop thriller “Destroyer” along with being involved with the hit Showtime series “Yellowjackets.” However, after being hand-picked by Blumhouse to make a new Dracula film two years ago, the film is sadly not moving forward.

A new Dracula movie that was meant to be directed by “The Invitation” filmmaker Karyn Kusama has been scrapped at Miramax Films and Blumhouse just weeks before it was meant to begin production and will now no longer move forward, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
Miramax made the call to pull out of the project over creative differences with Kusama, and the film is now dead, unlikely to move forward elsewhere.
The film was tentatively titled “Mina Harker” and was set to star Jasmine Cephas Jones (“Blindspotting”) in the title role, with production kicking off in May. The film was a modern day vampire tale in which a woman meets Dracula in present day Los Angeles.
Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, frequent collaborators of Kusama, wrote the script based on Bram Stoker’s classic “Dracula.”
Kusama was also meant to produce “Mina Harker” alongside Jason Blum, Hay, Manfredi and Bill Block for Miramax.

“The plane crashed… a bunch of our friends died… and then the rest of us starved and scavenged.” So began the official teaser for Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” a survival drama that features a pilot episode directed by Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation). The flashback anchoring “Yellowjackets” is a short horror film unto itself. The first episode opens with a girl running barefoot through a frozen forest, whipping through the trees, stumbling through the snow as piercing shrieks and battle cries echo through the mountains. Just when it seems like her panic might swallow her whole, the ground beneath her feet does so instead. She lands on the sharpened sticks below with a sickening thud, hand twitching as a cloaked figure in pink Converse sneakers shuffles up to view her kill.
This pilot episode, which only gets more disturbing from these opening minutes, was directed with chilling precision by Karyn Kusama, whose resumé — including films such as “Jennifer’s Body” and “The Invitation” — makes her uniquely qualified to helm a show like “Yellowjackets.” The new Showtime series from Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson follows a high school soccer team that gets stranded in the...

Onyx Collective has given a series greenlight to Reasonable Doubt to stream on Hulu. Emayatzy Corinealdi (Middle of Nowhere) is set to star in the lead role of the legal drama, from writer/executive producer Raamla Mohamed (Scandal); executive producer Kerry Washington, who will direct the first episode; and ABC Signature.
This marks the first scripted series order for Onyx Collective, Disney’s new curated content brand for creators of color and underrepresented voices, led by Tara Duncan, whose output is tailored primarily for Hulu.
In Reasonable Doubt, you’ll judge Jax Stewart (Corinealdi) for her questionable ethics and wild interpretations of the law… until you’re the one in trouble. Then you’ll see her for what she is: the most brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles who bucks the justice system at every chance she gets.

Onyx Collective on Hulu has greenlit the legal drama “Reasonable Doubt” starring Emayatzy Corinealdi in their first scripted series order, Variety has learned.
The series was originally reported as being in development at Onyx Collective back in July after having previously been in the works at ABC.
“Reasonable Doubt” will be executive produced by Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone for Simpson Street and Larry Wilmore via Wilmore Films. Raamla Mohamed is writing and executive producing the series, which features an all-Black writing staff. Attorney Shawn Holley is a co-executive producer as is Jon Leshay. ABC Signature will produce. Simpson Street and Mohamed are currently under overall deals with the studio. Washington will also direct the first episode after previously directing episodes of “Scandal,” “Smilf,” and “Insecure.”
“It’s hard to imagine a more ideal creative partnership for our first Onyx Collective scripted series,” said Tara Duncan, president of Freeform and Onyx Collective.

At over sixty years old now and screening over three hundred movies over the course of two weeks, the London Film Festival is a huge event on the film festival calendar. And it’s no surprise that female-directed horror movies will be ever present at this year’s London Film Festival. Not only has Prano Bailey-Bond’s Censor taken the festivals by storm this year but in the last five year’s or so, Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation, Julia Ducournau’s Raw, Anna Biller’s The Love Witch, Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge and many other great genre movies have been well received and made viewers take a closer look at female directors.
With that in mind, two debut features and a returning genre director will be at this year’s festival.

The first season of “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” which is currently rolling out on Disney+, will stick to the source material provided by Trenton Lee Stewart’s beloved kids book of the same name, according to series creators Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. But should the series continue into another season, that might not remain to be the case.
“The subsequent books are all wonderful, and they’re very different, too,” Hay said in an interview with TheWrap. “So if we were lucky enough to continue and get another season, I think it would likely draw from a lot of them in different ways, as opposed to being very, very specific.”
Hay and Manfredi said they hope to draw from all of the sequels (as well as Stewart’s prequel novel) for future episodes, mixing and matching elements rather than doing a straight adaptation.

Familystyle has entered into a first-look deal with Entertainment 360, the joint venture between MRC Television and Management 360, Variety has learned exclusively.
Familystyle is the production company run by Karyn Kusama, Matt Manfredi, and Phil Hay. The first project being developed under the deal is the series “The Occupant.” Kusama is attached to direct with Manfredi and Hay attached to write. The Los Angeles-set conspiracy is about a mentally fragile but idealistic person who becomes a reluctantly pivotal figure in the clandestine struggle between a seemingly benign modern megacorporation and the ragtag groups of Angelenos who oppose it.
“Phil, Matt, and I have made some of our most personal work as a team,” said Kusama. “We are truly thrilled that MRC Television and E360 are the latest additions to our creative family. From the get-go, it was clear that our friends there shared our enthusiasms and ambitions and would...

With new horror movies launching on Netflix almost every week, it can be a hard time trying to keep track of them all. Not only is it a challenge working out what kind of spooky flick you’re in the mood for in the moment – be it slasher, creature feature or supernatural – but it’s also useful knowing if the pic in question is going to be, well, good. As you probably know, there’s nothing worse than dropping two hours of your life on an absolute clanger. We’ve all been there, right?
Thankfully, review aggregators like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes can be a useful resource that give audiences a general understanding of whether a specific film is for them or not. And as a result, we’re going to utilize this handy info to compile a list of creepy movies that should be on your radar.

In fact, it was reported that Karyn Kusama, of “The Invitation” fame, was set to direct episodes of the series. Alas, it appears that this was all truly too good to be true, as the “Sexy Beast” series is now without a deal and a platform.

Filmmaker Leigh Whannell is in talks to direct The Wolf Man, according to Deadline. The picture, slated to star Ryan Gosling, is being put on the production fast track by Universal Pictures following the worldwide success and acclaim of The Invisible Man, which Whannell wrote and directed. That film starred Elisabeth Moss and grossed $124 million worldwide in just a few weeks of theatrical release, before the pandemic shut screens down everywhere.
The Invisible Man cost just $7 million to make, a price point that’s comfortable for both Whannell, whose career was launched with the independent Saw, and Blumhouse Films, the horror hit factory which produced Whannell’s previous monster effort. Blumhouse has also just come aboard The Wolf Man, after head honcho Jason Blum told us a few weeks ago that his shop was not yet involved.

Rian Johnson has explored nearly every genre under the sun, from his cult-classic, neo-noir feature debut “Brick” and the Agatha Christie-inspired mystery of “Knives Out,” to the time-hopping sci-fi of “Looper” and the action-adventure of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” But one strand of movie the literate filmmaker and self-professed movie nerd has never explicitly taken on is the horror film. During a Film Independent-hosted webinar this week with Karyn Kusama, Johnson talked about his favorite horror movies, and why it’s a genre he’s unlikely to tackle. Watch the full Q&a via Film Independent below.

There’s a scene in Małgorzata Szumowska’s dark, stomach-churning, brilliant drama The Other Lamb that perfectly encapsulates the life-on-the-outside longing of being born into a cult. A charismatic man referred to by his flock as Shepherd is leading his all-female acolytes on foot as they search for a new home; a visit from the authorities set this plan into action. One of his followers–his daughter–is Selah, a teenager whose mother passed away shortly after giving birth. Selah is simultaneously spellbound by and suspicious of Shepherd. As she and her fellow daughters and wives wander the harsh landscape, a car passes by. Selah imagines herself in the backseat, chewing gum, wearing a high school jacket. Her eyes meet the eyes of her imaginary double. And away the car drives.
Achingly memorable scenes like this make The Other Lamb a shattering film, the type of harrowing genre entry that should develop a strong following.

"How often do you have these dinners?" Historia Films has debuted an official promo trailer for an indie horror film titled The Dinner Party, the latest horror creation from Mississippi native filmmaker / actor Miles Doleac. A budding playwright and his wife attend a dinner party hosted by wealthy, cultural elites, who've promised to bankroll his latest play to Broadway, but, in fact, have darker designs in mind for the couple. Sounds a bit too much like The Invitation, mixed with Ready or Not. This stars Bill Sage, Lindsay Anne Williams, Jeremy London, Mike Mayhall, Alli Hart, Ritchie Montgomery, and Doleac. It looks especially bland, but still might entice a few horror fans. Here's the first festival promo trailer for Miles Doleac's The Dinner Party, direct from YouTube: In the film, written and directed by the Banshee alum, a budding playwright and his wife attend a dinner party hosted by wealthy,...

The Dark Universe may be dead before it barely had a chance to breathe, but the Universal stable of classic monsters lives on. After the recent success of Leigh Whannell and Jason Blum’s The Invisible Man, which flipped our perspective and gave Elisabeth Moss another superb role, Blumhouse has now announced their next take on the monster movie.
THR reports that a Dracula film is now in the works with Karyn Kusama on board to direct and her collaborators Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay will write the script. Coming off Destroyer and The Invitation, the filmmaking team has not revealed any more details on what form this film may take, but we imagine it’s less Van Helsing and more of a grounded, visceral approach if Kusama’s previous films are any indication. “To die, to truly be dead,” Bela Lugosi said in Hollywood’s classic adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, “that must be glorious.” But beloved monsters never die, no matter how many stakes you drive through their hearts. They are rebooted. Following the box office and critical success of The Invisible Man, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse production banner is looking to resurrect Dracula, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While Universal hasn’t officially signed on, they do have a first-look deal with Blumhouse and a cloakroom of capes for the Transylvanian Count.
The new Dracula movie will be helmed by Karyn Kusama. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who teamed with Kusama on those latter two films, will write the screenplay. Kusama also recently directed an episode of HBO’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider.

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, which generated a horror hit with “The Invisible Man,” has launched development of an untitled Dracula movie.
Karyn Kusama, whose credits include “Destroyer,” “The Invitation” and “Jennifer’s Body,” is attached to direct the Dracula project. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who teamed with Kusama on “Destroyer” and “The Invitation,” are writing the script.
The project is not set at a studio. Blumhouse has a first-look deal at Universal and partnered with the studio on “The Invisible Man.”
The Count Dracula character was created by Bram Stoker in his 1897 novel “Dracula” as the vampire moved from Transylvania to England and battled with Professor Abraham Van Helsing. The character was memorably portrayed by Bela Lugosi in Universal’s “Dracula” in 1931. Luke Evans played the vampire in 2014’s “Dracula Untold,” which grossed $217 million worldwide for Universal.

Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who have collaborated with Kusama on “Destroyer” and “The Invitation,” are writing the script.
Blumhouse is just coming off a hit with Leigh Whannell’s “The Invisible Man,” which grossed $102.2 million worldwide based off a $7 million budget. While the “Dracula” project isn’t set up at Universal Pictures just yet, it would make sense given Universal has a first look deal with Blumhouse, and Dracula is part of Universal’s Classic Monsters, alongside Godzilla, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man.
