Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.

The art world is a cutthroat and judgemental arena. You’re the cat’s pajamas one day, but you’re old news if you take too long to deliver your next masterpiece. Surrounded by snobbery, bitter wine, and diamond-encrusted vultures waiting to pick your talented bones clean, artists endure a lot to remain relevant, and some would even kill for the chance to keep their spot in the public eye. In today’s The Kill Room trailer, a hitman, his boss, and an art dealer concoct a money laundering scheme that accidentally turns an assassin into an overnight avant-garde sensation.
Nicol Paone directs from a script by Jonathan Jacobson, with Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Joe Manganiello leading the cast, with Maya Hawke, Mike Doyle, Debi Mazar, Matthew Maher, Marianne Rendón, Gionna Daddio, Jennifer Kim, Amy Keum, Brandon Curry, and more.

The Kill Room, a dark comedy crime thriller from director Nicol Paone, is set to reach theatres on September 29th, courtesy of Shout! Studios – and with that date less than two months away, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Jonathan Jacobson, The Kill Room has the following synopsis: Patrice Capullo has a big problem: her art gallery isn’t making money. Gordon has an even bigger problem, while arranging hits for the mob is lucrative, he & his ”colleague” Reggie need a better way to launder their money. A chance introduction from Patrice’s drug dealer has the art world meet the underworld, and a plan is hatched. The one hitch: Patrice needs something to sell. With that, Reggie taps into his inner artist and makes a painting which immediately “sells” for an incredibly high price. When the...

Although “Xo, Kitty” doesn’t include cameos from Lana Condor’s Lara Jean or Janel Parrish’s Margot as Kitty’s (Anna Cathcart) older sisters, the show still explores sibling relationships.
Kitty’s chemistry teacher Alex Finnerty (Peter Thurnwald) is Korean, but he was adopted by Australians. Her sisterly instincts kick in when she finds a hospital bracelet from a birth center with her mother’s name on it. She tracks down the baby’s records and, upon learning it was adopted by Australians, immediately assumes it’s Alex.
“We see her get very passionate about it and jump to conclusions just because she wants it to be real and she wants her theories to be accurate,” Anna Cathcart told TheWrap. “It brings out a different side of her, and [Alex] acts like a big brother — even if we find out he’s not really her brother, he still is that...

Jane Seymour has opened up about a near-death experience she had in 1988.
The actor, 72, who rose to fame as Bond girl Solitaire in the 007 film Live and Let Die, nearly died after she contracted bronchitis during filming and an antibiotic was injected into a vein rather than a muscle.
Asked in a new interview in The Times Magazine about whether she believes anything happens after we die, she said: “I have no idea. I do know that I left my body [after the near-lethal antibiotics]. I did see the white light and I did look down and quite clearly see and hear everyone screaming and trying to resuscitate me, which they were able to do.
“But when you’re out of your body, everything goes very calm.”
Seymour added that, looking back on her life, she doesn’t have any regrets. “I really don’t,” she said. “I’ve probably made millions of...

Taking to TikTok on Friday, December 2, Bialik posted a video reflecting on the episode and Jordan’s final appearance. “We didn’t know it at the time that that was Leslie’s last episode,” she said. “I couldn’t bring myself to watch it because I’m not ready. “India Sweets and Spices” is an independent film about immigrants who face family complications and romantic entanglements in America.
India Sweets & Spices is a chain of Indian grocery stores across Southern California. Now the grocery chain, founded in 1984, is raising hell over the movie, which debuted at Tribeca earlier this month.

Two recent films shared top honors this week on leading VOD charts. Of top significance is the early success of “Let Him Go” (Focus), one of several current releases from Universal and its specialty unit that is available for $19.99 only three weeks after its theatrical debut. “The New Mutants” (Disney), which was released in August and has a lower $5.99 cost placed #1 on two charts.
“Let Him Go,” a contemporary Western starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, soared on FandangoNow and Apple TV, two charts that provide the most immediate response. The former ranks by dollars paid; the latter lists by number of transactions. Placing ahead of films with much lower prices suggests very strong interest and hints that the Universal/Focus strategy could be working. The film also placed #6 at Google Play. With an earlier deadline, Spectrum usually lags behind the others; expect it to show up next week.

The erratic world of VOD consumption saw a lift this week with debuts of “The New Mutants” (Disney) and “Unhinged” (Solstice), films that were the first wide releases when theaters began to reopen in August. Ninety days later, normal windows dictate that it’s time for non-premium availability. (They each rent for $5.99.)
Disney’s Marvel spin-off took the top spot at Apple TV and FandangoNow, while Russell Crowe’s stalker thriller is #1 at Google Play. Two items of note: “Mutants” shows its strength by taking the top spot at Fandango, which ranks by revenue, not transactions; that’s impressive for a standard-price title. Unlike “Mutants,” “Unhinged” had a PVOD release and now sees a revival at its lower price.
These two titles were the only ones to place on three charts. (Spectrum’s weekly chart lags behind and will likely show them next week.) “Unhinged” placed #2 and #3 elsewhere, while “Mutants” was #5 on Google.

Four VOD titles reached #1 in a week with scattershot results across the board. “Mortal” (Saban), a contemporary action film with Nordic mythology roots, took first place at Apple TV. Meanwhile, the PVOD prison drama “The Informer” (Vertical) repeated at #1 at FandangoNow, Paramount’s horror entry “Spell” is first at Spectrum, and romance “After We Collided” from Briarcliff bested at Google Play. “Mortal” is a standard price entry, while “The Informer” is at $19.99 premium, with “Spell” at $9.99 finding a middle ground.
But the highest showing for a new release is #2 at Apple TV for Woody Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York” (MPI). Its VOD showing comes three weeks after a token theatrical run, more than a year after it opened in most of the world, and after his latest, “Rifkin’s Festival,” premiered overseas.

Every year, movie-preview pieces herald the holidays’ arrival; in 2020, the headlines are a little different. As USA Today proclaimed, “10 Must-See Movies to Stream Over the Holiday Season.” They include “Soul,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Let Them All Talk,” and “Small Axe” — major awards contenders, many of which would have have been theatrical releases. However, they all belong to streamers, not VOD.
Meanwhile, on Friday Vertical Entertainment dropped an action film, “The Informer,” which stars Joel Kinnaman as an ex-con who returns to prison undercover to expose a Polish drug cartel. Kat Dennings has opened up on why she defended singer Billie Eilish after she was body shamed for wearing a tight top.
Last month, the -18-year-old songstress was photographed wearing a tight vest top and shorts as opposed to the baggy attire that she typically sports, which led some of her fans to criticize her for her appearance.
At the time, Dennings, 34, came to Billie Eilish’s defense on Twitter, where she wrote, "Anyone reacting to @billieeilish having a normal body has to take a hard look themselves."

Despite the plethora of horror and other genre releases that glutted home platforms this week, romance “After We Collided” placed best on VOD charts this weekend. It ranked #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, both of which rank by transactions.
“Unhinged” is #1 at FandangoNow, which is based on revenue and gives an edge to Premium VOD titles like this $19.99 entry. Cable giant Spectrum still shows the Alec Baldwin-starring mystery “An Imperfect Murder,” which has little action elsewhere, atop its chart.
Surging late on the charts, “The Craft: Legacy” from Blumhouse Prods. and indie director Zoe Lister-Jones performed strongly at $19.99. It likely missed the top spot at FandangoNow because its full-week chart covered four days prior to its Friday release, but still took the #2 spot there. It is #3 at Apple TV and Google Play, despite its higher cost.

“Parasite” is an often-brutal examination of wealth inequality, and yet its Best Picture win still counts as one of the few universally uplifting moments that 2020 had to offer. This Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection arrives fully-loaded with extras, including director Bong Joon Ho’s black-and-white rendering of the film — anything but an afterthought, it’s a version that he and cinematographer Kyung-pyo Hong had in mind all along — commentaries, interviews, and a new essay from onetime TheWrap film critic Inkoo Kang.
Also available: Cameroonian college students get pulled into the dark web to pull a “Scam République” (IndiePix); anime saga “Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna” (Shout/Toei) celebrates the franchise’s 20th anniversary; “Three Comrades” (IndiePix) go out to unwind on a Friday night and wind up on an unexpected spree.

“After We Collided” is the big winner this week. It is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, and #2 at FandangoNow (where its $6.99 price on the revenue-based chart put it at a disadvantage). Its Friday debut precluded Spectrum.
This is the sequel to 2019 college romance “After,” which grossed $12 million domestic and $57 million overseas. “After We Collided” also had a theatrical release this weekend, but earned only $420,000 at theaters willing to play day and date. This opened weeks ago in international theaters (including Canada), where it’s earned over $46 million. It’s a sign of how foreign results are dwarfing domestic ones (albeit with minimal competition).
Briarcliff opted to go at a non-premium VOD price and this clicked right away. “After” cost $14 million; figure this is more. It’s recouped a nice share of its cost overseas, and now can collect 70 percent of its domestic VOD from what appears to be a strong response.

At a time when we long to celebrate together, to move freely as we once did, in the presence of our favourites friends and family members, comes the release of Friendsgiving, a comedy, set mostly across one day, reminding us the joy and sheer despair these big events would often provide.
To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of speaking to two of the movie’s leading roles in Malin Akerman and Ryan Hansen, alongside the director Nicole Paone. We speak about how much they are all missing seeing friends and family this year, while Paone tells us about the challenges in directing such a huge ensemble piece. Hansen talks about being inspired by the women that surround him, and Akerman tells us all about her favourite Swedish tradition…

A holiday plan for two lifelong friends to drown their sorrows in pie turns into something much more sociable in Friendsgiving, the writing-directing debut of comic actress Nicole Paone. Jam-packed with familiar names, it is most interested in those besties (played by Malin Akerman and Kat Dennings), whose exasperated complaints about failed relationships don’t deliver the laughs they seem intended to. While some characters on the ever-escalating guest list provide the pair with welcome comic distraction, this day-to-night hangout pic doesn’t really take flight.

The portmanteau word “friendsgiving” has been in the popular American lexicon for over a decade now, though the institution it describes is far, far older. Surely for as long as families have been gathering to bond, feast and drive each other gradually crazy over Thanksgiving, the option of a less fractious holiday spent with kith rather than kin has been on the table. Yet the takeaway, such as it is, from Nicol Paone’s sketchy, loose-knit ensemble comedy “Friendsgiving” is that there ultimately isn’t much difference between the two: Turkey Day, it seems, is a recipe for conflict with or without blood relatives in attendance.
It’s a premise that “Friendsgiving” contrives by clumping together a pick-and-mix of mismatched, eccentric characters whom you can’t imagine ever willingly hanging out in the first place; whatever history or chemistry binds them is largely lost in the boozy haze of a slender screenplay.

CAA Media Finance is representing worldwide distribution rights to “India Sweets and Spices,” produced by Sk Global (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and Madison Wells (“Genius”).
The film is directed by Geeta Malik (“Troublemaker”) and is based on her own script “Dinner With Friends” that won the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in screenwriting. The film follows a young woman who, after her first year at college, returns to her affluent suburban New Jersey home for the summer and discovers distressing secrets about her seemingly picture-perfect Indian American family.
“We don’t often see movies about the duality of identifying strongly with both Indian and American traditions, and not having to choose between them,” Malik said. “And I didn’t want to make a movie specifically about any sort of culture clash. Every generation, no matter what their background, has to find a way to both break free from and embrace their history. That...

Holiday celebrations have long been the go-to trope for comedy films. “Friendsgiving” is yet another entry venturing into this already crowded sub-genre. The project is taking on a fairly new tradition as friends meet up for their own gathering in hopes of leaving the family debacles behind. The film’s writer and director—Nicol Paone—provides a unique take; no doubt driven by her years of experience appearing in numerous series.

"That's the whole point of Thanksgiving, Molly - sugar and regret!" Saban Films has debuted an official trailer for a comedy titled Friendsgiving, which is about exactly what it sounds like it's about - a wild Thanksgiving dinner with friends. The film marks the feature directorial debut of actress Nicol Paone. Molly and Abbey, along with their crew of close friends and some acquaintances, host a dysfunctional, comical and chaotic Thanksgiving dinner. Starring Malin Akerman and Kat Dennings, with Aisha Tyler, Chelsea Peretti, Christine Taylor, Jane Seymour, Deon Cole, Wanda Sykes, and Ryan Hansen. This looks like a bunch of friends got together and made a film about getting together - harmless fun and dumb laughs. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Nicol Paone's Friendsgiving, direct from YouTube: Abby is looking forward to a laid-back Thanksgiving with her best friend Molly. Defining a successful movie release has been a fraught task lately due to the coronavirus pandemic, as premium theatrical films shift to digital debuts and massive blockbusters get kicked down the calendar.
Thanks to a few transparent scoreboards like the iTunes store, however, the industry can see plainly when a hit is a hit. Last weekend, the Saban Films release “The Silencing” made a lot of noise as the top rental in the country, at the attractive price point of $6.99. The film has amassed roughly $5 million in PVOD sales, insiders familiar with the tally told Variety.
