Original or Very Good ideas that were wasted through filming

by bharathram21391 | created - 30 Jun 2011 | updated - 24 Jun 2013 | Public

Some films have great ideas. But poorly executed. And it is so poorly filmed that it spoils the fun of the concept.

Some films of this sort are listed here.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

G | 149 min | Adventure, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

After uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, Daniel Richter

Votes: 719,909 | Gross: $56.95M

I know i will receive 100s of comments against this.

But its the truth. This film IS wasted. I think the basic idea is original and thought-provoking. But stupid filming equals stupid movie right? This is one of the most boring film I have seen (of course next to blade runner).

Just going through the plot summary here in IMDb I was impressed at first. It was not until I saw the film when I changed my opinion. First of all, the pace is sooooooooooooo slow that you can easily doze off. And nothing nowhere is clear about the film, what do you expect?? No solid story. Nothing advances the plot. I am not able to believe these many hordes of people like it. I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE WAY IT IS WASTED.

2. The Final Cut (2004)

PG-13 | 95 min | Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

43 Metascore

Set in a world with memory recording implants, Alan Hakman is a cutter, someone with the power of final edit over people's recorded histories. His latest assignment is one that puts him in danger.

Director: Omar Naim | Stars: Robin Williams, Jim Caviezel, Mira Sorvino, Mimi Kuzyk

Votes: 34,510 | Gross: $0.55M

Yeah another truly good concept wasted. Again, what does the director want us to enjoy in this film? Nobody is going to be amazed by mere concept of video-recording one's life, unless the plot had something interesting to do with it.

Can't believe Robin Williams actually agreed to act in this film, especially, comparing with many classics he has acted in.

3. Shutter Island (2010)

R | 138 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

63 Metascore

Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Mortimer, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley

Votes: 1,457,684 | Gross: $128.01M

I may be dropping this on you. But let's face it. I don't have to explain how original this one is. But there's absolutely nothing in the part of direction, cinematography or characterization that makes good with this film.

First of all, why should the characters speak to each other in whispers??? Can't they speak like normal people?? And the director wants us to listen to this??? Can't even make out whether they spoke or belched.

Also, there's literally nothing to the movie beyond the twist ending. NOTHING!!! I am certainly not a stupid to watch a film for more than 2hrs just for a small (badly shown) twist in the end.

4. Unbreakable (2000)

PG-13 | 106 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

A man learns something extraordinary about himself after a devastating accident.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Robin Wright, Spencer Treat Clark

Votes: 442,020 | Gross: $95.01M

When I went through the plot in Wikipedia for this, I was almost resolute to watch it. It was a great disappointment :(

The same whispering dialogue thing also applies to this film. And I have never liked Shyamalan's slow-paced filming (I didn't know about it then). Unarguably, interesting concept and amazingly interesting story.

But stupid direction. Yeah. VERY STUPID!!! Even then twist in the end is badly, VERY BADLY, shown. I was hardly taken aback when it went on.

5. 4D Man (1959)

TV-PG | 85 min | Action, Horror, Romance

A scientist discovers a formula enabling him to pass through solid surfaces, but he also rapidly ages, which forces him to kill humans in order to reverse the aging process by absorbing his victims' energies.

Director: Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. | Stars: Robert Lansing, Lee Meriwether, James Congdon, Robert Strauss

Votes: 2,165

An old film but still senseless. As the title goes the concept should be great. IT IS! Agreed!! A man becomes transparent and passes through walls, uses other people's life and youth to keep himself alive. FINE. Went on well until then.

I would also agree if you say it was difficult to show such special effects in those times. But won't he do anything further?? I mean, will he just keep going through walls all through the film and scare his friends?? Won't it even dawn on his mind to terrorize this world or something??

And what's with the ending? What does it mean? Either he has to die or be caught, not just go away without meaning anything apparently. THE ENDING IS THE PRIMARY REASON FOR INCLUDING THIS FILM IN THIS LIST!!!

6. The Last Airbender (2010)

PG | 103 min | Action, Adventure, Family

20 Metascore

Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, must master all four elements and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz Beckham, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Votes: 174,943 | Gross: $131.56M

I am not saying this is a very original idea. Agreed that its only an adaption of the TV Series. But still making this into a movie is a very good idea, if only Shyamalan had not messed this one up. I think most people felt this one to be boring because it had some very slow moving parts here and there. Besides, there were not enough action sequences, just the talk about all the action.

If only some more action and some twists and turns in the story was incorporated, this film would have been one of the best fantasy films.

7. Soylent Green (1973)

PG | 97 min | Crime, Mystery, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

A nightmarish futuristic fantasy about the controlling power of big corporations and an innocent cop who stumbles on the truth.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors

Votes: 70,595 | Gross: $7.92M

This film is almost like Shutter Island. Nothing and NOTHING except the twist. The concept of humans eating humans in some other form is truly fantastic. That situation can easily happen when there is no food available. TRUE!!!

But that's it?? Will there not be anything creative and with turns all through the film?? Just plain stupid junk and more junk before the end??

Just the final dialogue of the movie makes sense and nothing else has to be in the film???

How do they expect us to get entertained with it??

8. Hitman (I) (2007)

R | 94 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

35 Metascore

A gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 hired by a group known only as 'The Organization' is ensnared in a political conspiracy, which finds him pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Russia and Eastern Europe.

Director: Xavier Gens | Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Dougray Scott, Olga Kurylenko, Robert Knepper

Votes: 177,801 | Gross: $39.69M

Partially a very good story. But a stupid ending. Should an action film not have an ending that's brilliant?? What's with the getting caught and escaping??

And what is Olga Kurylenko doing all through the film?? Who cares whether she appears or not?? The film itself is to be dumped anyway.

9. They Live (1988)

R | 94 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, George 'Buck' Flower

Votes: 145,563 | Gross: $13.01M

Yet another original idea. Using glasses to identify aliens in human form. WOW!!! And later contact lenses. COOL!!!

But John Carpenter has proved it. Proved he can worsen any film with his touch. (Please tell me what is the opposite of Midas Touch so that I can describe him with).

After a disaster called The Thing (1982), he has wasted another good concept. The slow slow pace again. And nothing whatsoever happens in the film except identifying the aliens. And what makes one think that we have a bad security in Earth here, that aliens can break into easily? Must there not have been a thoughtful way of making aliens take over? BRAINLESS!!

10. Sunshine (2007)

R | 107 min | Sci-Fi, Thriller

64 Metascore

A team of international astronauts is sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057.

Director: Danny Boyle | Stars: Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Cliff Curtis

Votes: 267,583 | Gross: $3.68M

I was actually impressed about this film when I heard about the story line. Never-as-before concept. And when you seriously think of it, it gives you the creeps. And even the ideas inside the ship, like a shield to reflect the sunlight is worth a compliment.

But it failed enormously in the storyline. Very slow and even more importantly very disorienting. Nothing advances the plot at all!! Pure junk for the eyes and ears. To add to which is stupid sound-effects and and senseless cinematography. Much of the film shows some crap and only a few scenes make sense. And all through the climax the camera keeps moving insanely showing nothing meaningful. By the time it ended, I was glad it was over.

11. Independence Day (1996)

PG-13 | 145 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind's best weapon is the will to survive.

Director: Roland Emmerich | Stars: Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell

Votes: 605,897 | Gross: $306.17M

You are going to ask some version of "Hey, are you kidding me??".

Apart from special effects, nothing great about this film. No plot again. Just plain aliens threatening to kill us and we fight them off. What an oh-so-old concept?? This concept has a lot of cobwebs on it.

And thought I find this film on numerous lists, no one has ever justified why they like it. Why this much of overrating??

12. Blade Runner (1982)

R | 117 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

A blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos

Votes: 823,418 | Gross: $32.87M

I know I will get tons of comments for this. But no other film has disappointing me. I can see this film in almost every science fiction list. And sure I had a high opinion before watching it. But I can assure I simply never stuck with the same opinion once I watched it.

First off, what kind of a story is it? The film must instill some interest on the story and not squelch it so strongly. Especially the climax was SICKENING. I was just waiting for it to end. Could not bear the torture. If they wanted to make some out-of-the-time special effects, why not make it for a good film?? Why for this stupid, foolish, idiotic, tasteless, senseless, insane film??? (need any more adjectives?).

Many say this is the best science fiction film ever. I must say I feel it's quite the opposite.

13. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

PG | 115 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

75 Metascore

When strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the city's residents one body at a time.

Director: Philip Kaufman | Stars: Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright

Votes: 69,895 | Gross: $24.95M

It is definitely a good idea to remake a true classic and a fine artistic movie. But did a total bad job. All the time the characters simply talk and do boring things. The film is so very slow and lacks the thrill of the 1956 version. I am not able to believe how many talk positively about this movie and go as far as saying that this one is better than its original version. No thrill, no fun, no tense feeling, no heroic scenes, bad acting, bad direction, bad locations for filming................. on the whole there is nothing positive. For the kind of story they had and for the success of its original version the film should have been so much more great.

14. Hancock (2008)

PG-13 | 92 min | Action, Comedy, Drama

49 Metascore

Hancock is a superhero whose ill-considered behavior regularly causes damage in the millions. He changes when the person he saves helps him improve his public image.

Director: Peter Berg | Stars: Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, Jae Head

Votes: 511,877 | Gross: $227.95M

This film perhaps conveys the meaning of "wasted" in the right sense. For the popularity of Will Smith, and how he is depicted in the film's beginning has already set the mood ready for a great story. After some time, you can easily see how boring it can get. Especially in the mid-portions the film, in the part where we come to know Charlize Theron is Hancock's wife, the film completely lost its flavour. The very same slow pace is maintained until the end and this snatches away all the interest. I need not even mention the horrible ending here. I almost went to sleep in the end. I wonder when they will learn not to waste a good film like this.

15. Mortal Kombat (1995)

PG-13 | 101 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

60 Metascore

Three unknowing martial artists are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world.

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson | Stars: Christopher Lambert, Robin Shou, Linden Ashby, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa

Votes: 124,664 | Gross: $70.45M

May be this for this film it is more of a widely felt opinion. We all know about the game. And we all know how it is spoilt in this film. But let me lay out certain points.

* Stupid sets * Stupid costumes * Stupid fighting * Bad characterization * No cerebral plot * In short, nothing qualifies as good

16. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

PG-13 | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

33 Metascore

Video game adventurer Lara Croft comes to life in a movie where she races against time and villains to recover powerful ancient artifacts.

Director: Simon West | Stars: Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight, Iain Glen, Noah Taylor

Votes: 219,025 | Gross: $131.14M

Greatest female video game protagonist played by one of the best suited actresses. But it could have been made a lot better, right? Certainly must not have been a film just for the sake of it. Turns out it was.

At least, this film is watchable against many others in this list. But that's more than I can say for this film's sequel.

17. Sorry, Wrong Number (1948)

Approved | 89 min | Drama, Film-Noir, Mystery

While on the telephone, an invalid woman overhears what she thinks is a murder plot and attempts to prevent it.

Director: Anatole Litvak | Stars: Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster, Ann Richards, Wendell Corey

Votes: 12,558

I understand many like this film. I also understand that the basic idea is very innovative. To think about the idea, its totally thrilling. But what we get in the final product on-screen is a lullaby. All we can do is sleep through the film and wake up in the end for the murder. The film gets so boring especially where the old man gets a ride on the rainy and where they keep talking. There is absolutely no thrill in any part of the movie, given that its a thriller film. The filmmaking is all bungled up and sometimes the film loses connection between various parts. If made well this movie would have come off like Hitchcock's "Stranger on a Train" or may be even like "Dial 'M' for Murder". Wasted is the right word.

18. Ayirathil Oruvan (2010)

Not Rated | 183 min | Action, Adventure

Anitha, a government official, embarks on a journey to find Chandramouli, an archaeologist, who went to Vietnam to search for any existence of the prince of the Chola dynasty.

Director: K. Selvaraghavan | Stars: Karthi, Reema Sen, Andrea Jeremiah, Parthiban Radhakrishnan

Votes: 7,611

I think many would agree with me at least on this one. I am not saying anything about the first half of the film. Every scene before the intermission was seriously worth the ride. It's what comes after it that spoilt it big-time. Yes, the film totally failed in every single manner after the intermission. It is very pragmatic to say no one cares whether or not a dynasty's king still lives, at least I do not care. And I seriously do not even want to understand what they are trying to tell us. It's going to be stupid anyway.

And might I point out the ending, what's so entertaining about which? But the time it ended, I did not even care to know what went on, because the 50 rupees I spent for it are wasted either way.

Wonder whether they will learn to make a good movie some time or the other..

19. Ulagam Sutrum Valiban (1973)

184 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

A genius scientist is abducted and his twin brother attempts to rescue him.

Director: M.G. Ramachandran | Stars: M.G. Ramachandran, S.A. Ashokan, Latha, Manjula

Votes: 162

Another horribly boring film that made it to the list. I am sure many MGR fans would disagree with me. And back then, Tamil films shoot up in score just for a few shots in a rich foreign country. This film takes place almost for the whole of the movie in foreign locations.

The film has a good concept because it is very ingenious and rather impressive to ideate storing the energy from a lightening into a bullet. And such an invention's formula would obviously be pursued by many, including the bad guys. Of course, an MGR starrer. That is a credit.

But everything else deserves to go into trash. Who cares whether MGR plays dual roles to protect the formula or even brings the sky down to impress the female leads? And those many number of women actresses are absolutely unnecessary. And who cares whether the bad guys make 100 or 1000 futile plans? There is nothing that advances the story any way. Not even in a simple way was the plot thickened.

Until the climax, it was a tiresome ride. You get a "Oh! When will it end?" feeling. The climax was well attempted, and somewhat entertaining when compared with most of the film. Come what may, this is one of the most overrated movies of all time.

20. House on Haunted Hill (1999)

R | 93 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

28 Metascore

An amusement park mogul offers a group of diverse people $1,000,000 to spend the night in a haunted house with a horrifying past.

Director: William Malone | Stars: Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher

Votes: 60,157 | Gross: $40.85M

Not the 1959 film. Its the remake. There isn't one thing that's good about this film. There can hardly be done anything more worse than such a remake, of an original classic.

Remaking the film was a good idea. But if it was for such a remake, then it was better off not making the film at all. And the worst part is, it has a sequel too.

And where did come the real ghost in the film?? It's supposed to be a threatening session of the made-up ghosts.

21. 13 Ghosts (1960)

Not Rated | 85 min | Horror, Mystery

56 Metascore

A family inherits what proves to be a haunted house, but a special pair of goggles allows them to see their ghostly tormentors.

Director: William Castle | Stars: Charles Herbert, Jo Morrow, Martin Milner, Rosemary DeCamp

Votes: 7,281 | Gross: $3.27M

Very original idea: Glasses used to see Ghosts. FANTASTIC!!! But seriously, isn't there not a single thing to add to it?? And, if you did not notice, I am not talking about the 2001 remake. Its the 1960 film.

Just ghosts coming and going all the time?? And some stupid lawyer guy wanting to take their money. And, is the housemaid seriously barmy to not tell them everything??

I can stack a ton more of points. But nothing makes sense. That's it!!!!!

22. The Mirror Crack'd (1980)

PG | 105 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

47 Metascore

Miss Jane Marple comes to solve the mystery when a local woman is poisoned and a visiting movie star seems to have been the intended victim.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Angela Lansbury, Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson, Geraldine Chaplin

Votes: 9,440

I don't think I can say anything more for this than what I have said for "Murder on the Orient Express". The death of the victim is nothing interest-creating. And all over the film the protagonists hardly get anywhere near the root of the crime. Just doodling and bumming around. They could have found a thing or two about the killing without spoiling the twist. The director could have let the plot advance a little.

23. Murder on the Orient Express (1974)

PG | 128 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

63 Metascore

In December 1935, when his transcontinental luxury train is stranded by deep snow, detective Hercule Poirot is called on to solve a murder that occurred in his car the night before, with a multitude of suspects.

Director: Sidney Lumet | Stars: Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery

Votes: 69,170 | Gross: $0.07M

What stupidity is this??? It does not even look like a murder mystery for the first half-an-hour. Till the murder happens, they keep talking about some senseless trash about how great this "Hercule Poirot" is. Why not let him do the action???

And nothing of the inquiries or conversations, after the murder, truly means anything. Just gap-fillers all through the film. And about the final solution to the mystery, there can be two viewpoints.

GOOD: Very improbable, so unexpected, can qualify for a twist. But again, it does not make us raise our eyebrows. Just "okay" kind of twist.

STUPID: By the time it ends one really does not care about the solution. The attitude is like "WILL THIS HELL EVEN END?". And what's with the "double solution" thing??. There must only be one solution, which is shown. And again so improbable and childish twist. Not very intellgent.

24. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

G | 127 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

83 Metascore

A ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the advanced submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas, Peter Lorre

Votes: 37,197 | Gross: $28.20M

Once again. Very good idea to adapt it from the novel. But failed. I know this one is regarded as the best known adaption. But by the end, I hardly had any interest left to watch the film. The film had very boring tone. And it had a very unappealing set of special effects, that were far from realistic. Most of the story is very uninteresting.

I was hoping this would be at least, half as interesting as the animated adaption. But it was nowhere near. Hopes shattered. Idea ruined. Not so very bad. But bad enough to be included in this list.

25. 7aum Arivu (2011)

Not Rated | 168 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

A genetic engineering student tries to revive the skills of a past legend and use them to save India from a deadly virus attack orchestrated by China.

Director: A.R. Murugadoss | Stars: Suriya, Shruti Haasan, Johnny Tri Nguyen, Abhinaya

Votes: 13,275

I write this on the same day i watched the film. It is a Great disappointment. Apart from blaming the kind of hype that was created, many expected something entertaining or impressive on the screens given the concept. All we got was some junk about activating Bodhidharman's DNA which never happened and some other garbage about Operation Red, spreading a bio war virus. None of those very few action scenes present in the movie were satisfying. They talk a lot in the movie than do it. They keep talking about the film's idea all over the movie and hardly get anywhere near the result. The climax is simply messed up, rather too simple and boring. For Murugadoss's direction and Surya's presence the movie should have been so much better.

26. The Others (2001)

PG-13 | 104 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

74 Metascore

In 1945, immediately following the end of Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.

Director: Alejandro Amenábar | Stars: Nicole Kidman, Christopher Eccleston, Fionnula Flanagan, Alakina Mann

Votes: 393,389 | Gross: $96.52M

The twist is truly unique. But that's it?? No red-herring?? Should something not distract us or entertain us in the middle, before the ending? And nothing feels ghastly or haunted about the house at all. Just plain stupid things that happen without even showing something fearful??

CRAZY!!

27. The Usual Suspects (1995)

R | 106 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

76 Metascore

The sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin

Votes: 1,145,928 | Gross: $23.34M

Yes. You read it right. It is the famous "The Usual Suspects"!!! Same reason as "The Others" or "Shutter Island". Just the twist and nothing else. The twist is shown in the best possible way. Agreed.

The beginning and the middle portions just left me sleepy. Can't they not come up with something good to fill the places until the twist. Just plain stupid junk??

I wonder why people leave out this fact and just think of the twist ending to call this film great.

28. Pitch Black (2000)

R | 109 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

49 Metascore

A transport ship crashes and leaves its crew stranded on a desert planet inhabited by bloodthirsty creatures that come out during an eclipse.

Director: David Twohy | Stars: Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Vin Diesel, Keith David

Votes: 253,045 | Gross: $39.24M

I must have added this movie here a long time back, but it did not strike me then. And except for Vin Diesel playing the anti-hero Riddick and some good special effects work, there is nothing entertaining at all.

The plot is just fantastic. Simple yet has the strength within. But some stupid director spoilt the fun of the whole film. Half the lines spoken by all the characters are not audible. And the whole tone of the movie is so very boring that you can half-die. There is nothing to improve the plot from time to time.

Opposing to the usual standards of a good film, there are only rare improvements in the story that makes us see the film seriously. After those few seconds, the boring tone seeps in again. What type of a stupid filmmaking is this?

The climax where Riddick shoots out the aliens was also not up to any good. There are more than a thousand ways in which David Twohy could have bettered the film but he made a very bad job.

But the reason the film takes the second last job, it starred Vin Diesel in his breakthrough role and in such a well-suited role that no one else can ever replace Diesel for Riddick.

P.S. - In fact, the video games starring Riddick are much much better and way more great than the movies.

29. Titan A.E. (2000)

PG | 94 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

48 Metascore

A young man learns that he has to find a hidden Earth ship before an enemy alien species does in order to secure the survival of humanity.

Directors: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman | Stars: Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, Bill Pullman, Jim Breuer

Votes: 63,966 | Gross: $22.75M

A fantastic science fiction film. That's why this is ranked as the last. The only part where it failed is the fantasy elements it has in the middle. Totally boring. And certain other parts where nothing great happens to advance the plot.

But the beginning and the climax --- INGENIOUS -- just plain ingenious.
