1. First Reformed (2017)

R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

86 Metascore

A minister of a small congregation in upstate New York grapples with mounting despair brought on by tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past.

Director: Paul Schrader | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Cedric The Entertainer, Victoria Hill

Votes: 62,612 | Gross: $3.45M

Best 1 A devastating film from Paul Schrader, this hauntingly powerful drama is a masterpiece of writing and a triumph for Ethan Hawke. It's intensely depressing and you may not wish to see it again, but regardless it makes for an unforgettably harrowing yet hugely rewarding look at humanity and faith. Thus far, the year's film to beat.

2. Slender Man (I) (2018)

PG-13 | 93 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

30 Metascore

In a small town in Massachusetts, a group of friends, fascinated by the internet lore of the Slender Man, attempt to prove that he doesn't actually exist - until one of them mysteriously goes missing.

Director: Sylvain White | Stars: Joey King, Julia Goldani Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso

Votes: 38,414 | Gross: $30.57M

Worst 1 OK, fine, we knew it was going to be bad. But we certainly didn't think it'd be This bad. With terrible acting, writing, directing and plotting, this is abominable beyond measure, boring as all hell, boasts one of the worst screenplays of the last few years and is about as scary as a GIF of a basket full of baby kittens. If there was a film worse than this in 2018, I'll eat a movie camera.

3. A Quiet Place (2018)

PG-13 | 90 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

82 Metascore

A family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.

Director: John Krasinski | Stars: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe

Votes: 583,931 | Gross: $188.02M

Overrated 1 How did this happen? A Quiet Place is a load of preposterous nonsense with more plot holes than you can shake a shotgun at and a seriously weak, un-involving story-line. It's not even as scary as all that most of the time and is nothing more than people trying to do difficult things as silently as possible. Maybe this would've worked as a game show, but as a film it's just too gimmicky. What's strangest of all is that some started analyzing it for deeper, second meanings... it's a stupid B-Movie! It doesn't mean anything!

4. Utoya: July 22 (2018)

Not Rated | 93 min | Drama, Thriller

71 Metascore

A teenage girl struggles to survive and to find her younger sister during the July 2011 terrorist mass murder at a political summer camp on the Norwegian island of Utøya.

Director: Erik Poppe | Stars: Andrea Berntzen, Aleksander Holmen, Solveig Koløen Birkeland, Brede Fristad

Votes: 15,822

Underrated 1 The great film of 2018 that nearly no-one will see, this Norwegian indie flick about the 2011 Norway Terrorist Attacks is a stunning single-take showcase filled with brilliant, arguably Oscar-worthy acting from its unknown cast, agonizing suspense and a vital message, all while handling the horrific tragedy it chronicles with remarkable sensitivity. See it.

5. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

PG-13 | 149 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans

Votes: 1,204,117 | Gross: $678.82M

Best 2 Everything in the MCU was building up this - and oh boy was it worth the wait. With the great performances, action and entertainment that define the franchise in place, but also adding incredible dramatic heft and removing problems that have plagued past MCU outings, with arguably the Best Comic Book Movie Villain Ever at its core (Villain problem? What villain problem?) this is not only everything we love about the MCU in one film, but it also takes the franchise to exciting new levels.

6. Truth or Dare (I) (2018)

PG-13 | 100 min | Horror, Thriller

35 Metascore

A harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone - or something - begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.

Director: Jeff Wadlow | Stars: Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Hayden Szeto

Votes: 63,386 | Gross: $41.41M

Worst 2 The year's first turkey - and for a while, 2018's bad movie to beat - this is unintentionally hilarious instead of scary. When I saw it in the cinema, everyone was roaring with laughter. With a badly written script, tame PG-13 death scenes and a ghastly ending, this represents everything that was bad about horror films through the 90s and 2000s. Now that we're experiencing a horror revival, something like this just isn't welcome.

7. First Man (2018)

PG-13 | 141 min | Biography, Drama, History

84 Metascore

A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

Director: Damien Chazelle | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler

Votes: 202,331 | Gross: $44.94M

Overrated 2 While a masterpiece of sound and imagery, First Man feels like a Wikipedia article going through Neil Armstrong's life instead of anything dramatic or moving. The film's bloated length and Ryan Gosling's sleep-inducing performance drag it down further and make this one of the most deserved Oscar snubs of the decade.

8. Searching (III) (2018)

PG-13 | 102 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

71 Metascore

After his teenage daughter goes missing, a desperate father tries to find clues on her laptop.

Director: Aneesh Chaganty | Stars: John Cho, Debra Messing, Joseph Lee, Michelle La

Votes: 180,019 | Gross: $26.02M

Underrated 2 See below

9. The Rider (2017)

R | 104 min | Drama, Western

85 Metascore

After suffering a near fatal head injury, a young cowboy undertakes a search for new identity and what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.

Director: Chloé Zhao | Stars: Brady Jandreau, Mooney, Tim Jandreau, Lilly Jandreau

Votes: 20,645 | Gross: $2.42M

Best 3 A subtle film that will quietly destroy you, this mesmerizing cinematic poem is a thought-provoking and poignant exploration of masculinity filled with effective performances and stunning cinematography. Out of the many independent films you'll hear about this year, this is one which you really must try and see.

10. The Happytime Murders (2018)

R | 91 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

27 Metascore

When the puppet cast of a '90s children's TV show begin to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case.

Director: Brian Henson | Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Elizabeth Banks, Maya Rudolph, Leslie David Baker

Votes: 30,383 | Gross: $20.71M

Worst 3 Wow, this was dire. It was a good idea, but the only thing the film ever does is present puppets misbehaving and push buttons without coming up with anything resembling a story and without actually coming up with proper jokes. It's not quite the worst film of the summer, but it comes close. The only good bit is the puppet sex scene and that was ruined in the trailer.

11. Vice (I) (2018)

R | 132 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

61 Metascore

The story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that are still felt today.

Director: Adam McKay | Stars: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell

Votes: 162,464 | Gross: $47.84M

Overrated 3 This is a terrible Best Picture nominee in every single way. It's well-directed and cleverly told but it lacks even the slightest bit of depth, insight or soul and fails to illuminate the complex, timely issues at its core. It also strands its amazing cast in a series of unmemorable caricatures.

12. Ghost Stories (I) (2017)

Not Rated | 98 min | Drama, Horror

68 Metascore

After receiving a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions, skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a terrifying trip.

Directors: Jeremy Dyson, Andy Nyman | Stars: Samuel Bottomley, Deborah Wastell, Amy Doyle, Daniel Hill

Votes: 36,981 | Gross: $0.14M

Underrated 3 Ghost Stories is one of the year's finest horror movies. With a pathos-filled story, strong performances and seriously effective scares, this stage-to-screen adaptation has flown under the radar and all you horror junkies are missing out big time.

13. Roma (2018)

R | 135 min | Drama

96 Metascore

A year in the life of a middle-class family's maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

Director: Alfonso Cuarón | Stars: Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Diego Cortina Autrey, Carlos Peralta

Votes: 169,851

Best 4 Although occasionally slow, Roma is an achingly beautiful, visually stunning and wonderfully poignant drama that might be the greatest Netflix Original to date. Alfonso Cuaron has done it again and if this wins Best Picture, that'd be a great result.

14. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

PG-13 | 134 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

52 Metascore

Gellert Grindelwald plans to raise an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings. In response, Newt Scamander's former professor, Albus Dumbledore, seeks his help to stop him.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Johnny Depp

Votes: 308,939 | Gross: $159.56M

Worst 4 Incoherent, dark, unpleasant, illogical and mindless, this is a cinematic catastrophe on nearly every conceivable level. Instead of being a movie, it's a bloated bit of filler for the next 3 movies in the series, which now seem doomed. How can one ever recover from this?

15. Ready Player One (2018)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

When the creator of a virtual reality called the OASIS dies, he makes a posthumous challenge to all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune and control of his world.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe

Votes: 486,570 | Gross: $137.69M

Overrated 4 A soulless, bloated and superficial exercise in nerd-baiting references disguised as a movie, this is one of the most inexplicably popular blockbusters of the decade. To be fair, it does have some good scenes but for the most part it's too hollow, dramatically flat and overlong to be anything more than a mild curiosity.

16. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

Young hero Thomas embarks on a mission to find a cure for a deadly disease known as "The Flare".

Director: Wes Ball | Stars: Dylan O'Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Votes: 163,635 | Gross: $58.03M

Underrated 4 A January blockbuster that surprisingly didn't suck, this is a well-directed, touching and relentlessly thrilling blockbuster that might be complete nonsense, but is also the best of an already good trilogy and a very satisfying time at the movies. Somehow, it only has 44% on Rotten Tomatoes.

17. A Star Is Born (2018)

R | 136 min | Drama, Music, Romance

88 Metascore

A musician helps a young singer find fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Director: Bradley Cooper | Stars: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott, Greg Grunberg

Votes: 419,609 | Gross: $215.29M

Best 5 A film which only gets better and better as it goes along, this might just be one of the best Oscar-Bait films ever. An emotionally devastating love story filled with amazing songs, brilliant performances, real emotional depth and helmed by a remarkably assured Bradley Cooper in what is amazingly his directional debut, this will go down in history as one of 2018's Greats.

18. I Feel Pretty (2018)

PG-13 | 110 min | Comedy, Romance

48 Metascore

A woman struggling with insecurity wakes from a fall believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. Her new confidence empowers her to live fearlessly, but what happens when she realizes her appearance never changed?

Directors: Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein | Stars: Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski, Tom Hopper

Votes: 57,257 | Gross: $48.80M

Worst 5 Obnoxious, preachy, unfunny and generally irritating, this is well-intentioned but ultimately comes across as mocking and snarky instead of charming. The performances are fine, but the script is weak and wastes an interesting idea.

19. Hereditary (2018)

R | 127 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

87 Metascore

A grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.

Director: Ari Aster | Stars: Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff

Votes: 378,508 | Gross: $44.07M

Overrated 5 This has been loved by critics but audiences have been less welcoming. Hereditary is a good film without a doubt and it's arguably a very good one in many ways, but there are some valid criticisms that haven't been acknowledged. Toni Collette is brilliant, the atmosphere is strong and the film is emotionally powerful, but it was very badly mis-marketed, it has a weak performance from Alex Wolff, it moves too slowly for its own good and the last half-hour is unintentionally hilarious nonsense which ruins the entire thing. This deserves the critical acclaim to some extent but the saucer-eyed reviews are a tad excessive.

20. Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)

R | 92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

53 Metascore

A teen comes into possession of a new laptop and soon discovers that the previous owner is not only watching him but will also do anything to get it back.

Director: Stephen Susco | Stars: Colin Woodell, Stephanie Nogueras, Betty Gabriel, Rebecca Rittenhouse

Votes: 38,410 | Gross: $8.78M

Underrated 5 An improvement over an already good horror film, this sequel transcends its gimmicky premise with strong performances, twisty plotting, likable characters and a relentless stream of brutally nasty and tense thrills. Sadly, it was hard to even find a screening and few are even aware it came out this year.

21. Searching (III) (2018)

PG-13 | 102 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

71 Metascore

After his teenage daughter goes missing, a desperate father tries to find clues on her laptop.

Director: Aneesh Chaganty | Stars: John Cho, Debra Messing, Joseph Lee, Michelle La

Votes: 180,019 | Gross: $26.02M

Best 6 A thriller so suspenseful and stressful it's genuinely harrowing to watch, this is far more than just a presentation gimmick. Thanks to surprising dramatic depth, great performances and a brilliantly, terrifyingly twisty plot, this is a truly stunning work that, in a just world, would get several Oscar nominations.

22. Welcome to Marwen (2018)

PG-13 | 116 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

40 Metascore

A victim of a brutal attack finds a unique and beautiful therapeutic outlet to help him through his recovery process.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Steve Carell, Falk Hentschel, Matt O'Leary, Nikolai Witschl

Votes: 26,000 | Gross: $10.76M

Worst 6 Syrupy, misguided and incredibly uncomfortable to watch, this has strong performances and special effects but overall ends up being the year's biggest Oscar-Bait fail as well as an embarrassing misfire for director Robert Zemeckis. This could just be the worst movie of his career.

23. Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

PG-13 | 134 min | Biography, Drama, Music

49 Metascore

The story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy

Votes: 593,210 | Gross: $216.43M

Overrated 6 This is a rock-solid film with a fair amount to like, but it does NOT, NOT, NOT deserve to be nominated for Best Picture or be on the IMDb Top 250. It only got 62% on Rotten Tomatoes after all.

24. The First Purge (2018)

R | 97 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

54 Metascore

America's third political party, the New Founding Fathers of America, comes to power and conducts an experiment: no laws for 12 hours on Staten Island. No one has to stay on the island, but $5,000 is given to anyone who does.

Director: Gerard McMurray | Stars: Y'lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Steve Harris

Votes: 71,074 | Gross: $69.49M

Underrated 6 An entertaining and well-made horror prequel filled with social commentary and dark thrills, this is the second-best film in the Purge series after the previous film, Election Year. Sadly, it's been overlooked and most will probably see Truth Or Dare or Slender Man instead.

Best 7 See above

26. The Festival (2018)

R | 98 min | Comedy, Music, Romance

57 Metascore

After Nick's girlfriend dumps him, his best mate Shane has the perfect antidote to his break-up blues: three days at an epic music festival.

Director: Iain Morris | Stars: Joe Thomas, Hannah Tointon, Hammed Animashaun, Hugh Coles

Votes: 7,671

Worst 7 The terrible film of the year that most thankfully won't see, this numbingly unfunny and mean-spirited British comedy takes the British comedic formula of dry, awkward, downbeat comedy and makes it depressing, sour and unlikable instead of reaching the heights of Peep Show, The Office or most of all The Inbetweeners, which this film (made by the same people) was so desperately trying to imitate. This is a sad waste of a talented comedic cast.

27. Cold War (2018)

R | 89 min | Drama, Music, Romance

90 Metascore

In the 1950s, a music director falls in love with a singer and tries to persuade her to flee communist Poland for France.

Director: Pawel Pawlikowski | Stars: Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Borys Szyc, Agata Kulesza

Votes: 61,945 | Gross: $4.57M

Overrated 7 It isn't entirely clear why this was quite so beloved. It's a good, four-star film for sure, but the critical acclaim felt a tiny bit excessive due to the film's lack of a truly compelling story to match the flawless visuals and performances.

28. The Equalizer 2 (2018)

R | 121 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

50 Metascore

Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Orson Bean

Votes: 197,952 | Gross: $102.08M

Underrated 7 While this sequel is undermined by too many sub-plots and a big plot twist so obvious it's kind of embarrassing, it still feels like it hasn't really been given its due. Denzel Washington is brilliant, the fight scenes are wonderful, the visuals are great and there's a bit of soul to it as well. It's not as good as the first but it's still a well-done thriller that retains most of what audiences liked from before.

29. Suspiria (I) (2018)

R | 152 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

64 Metascore

A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Director: Luca Guadagnino | Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Tilda Swinton, Doris Hick, Malgorzata Bela

Votes: 92,369 | Gross: $2.47M

Best 8 The actual best horror film of the year, this beautiful exercise in WTF-ness is a haunting, chilling, brilliantly made and intensely disturbing vision that reaches Kubrick levels of meticulous power at times. Although the original film is a tiny bit better, this is still one of the greatest horror movie remakes ever made whichever way you look at it.

30. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

PG-13 | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

During an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover

Votes: 379,362 | Gross: $213.77M

Worst 8 The worst live-action Star Wars film ever made, this has none of humor, fun, excitement and spirit that defines Star Wars. This is instead an entirely bland, workmanlike and forgettable blockbuster with no point, purpose or direction. You know a film sucks when the only memorable moment is some shameless fan service.

31. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

PG-13 | 118 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

70 Metascore

As Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

Director: Peyton Reed | Stars: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Walton Goggins

Votes: 450,097 | Gross: $216.65M

Overrated 8 In no way is this movie bad, but 88% on Rotten Tomatoes? Seriously? To be brutally honest, this film is something of a bore at times and while we all wanted something lighter and more gentle after Infinity War, we didn't want something quite as workmanlike, safe and forgettable as this. It's perfectly OK but it's definitely one of the lower-tier MCU offerings and the only genuinely memorable moments are the post-credits scenes, which is slightly worrying.

32. Venom (2018)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

35 Metascore

A failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.

Director: Ruben Fleischer | Stars: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze

Votes: 538,624 | Gross: $213.52M

Underrated 8 Not that great but certainly not that bad either, it did feel like people judged this movie before they even saw it. The truth is, Venom is an entertainingly weird and perfectly passable superhero film and while it isn't that good, the critical panning seemed awfully harsh.

33. You Were Never Really Here (2017)

R | 89 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

84 Metascore

A traumatized veteran unafraid of violence tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what could be his death trip or his awakening.

Director: Lynne Ramsay | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov, John Doman

Votes: 127,711 | Gross: $2.53M

Best 9 It's not a cheerful viewing, but this is still an exceptionally well-done Art-House film with real thematic depth and poetic visuals from the ever-excellent Lynne Ramsay. Armed also with a meaningful plot and a great performance from Joaquin Phoenix, this will deservedly go down as one of 2018's most acclaimed films.

34. Skyscraper (2018)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

51 Metascore

A security expert must infiltrate a burning skyscraper, 225 stories above ground, when his family is trapped inside by criminals.

Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber | Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Møller

Votes: 134,190 | Gross: $68.42M

Worst 9 An awful action film with none of the light charm of many Dwayne Johnson vehicles, this is as stupid as you'd expect but has none of the charm and humor that it needed to work. Even The Rock himself seems bored in this one. File this under 'Weak Die Hard Rip-Offs'.

35. Apostle (2018)

TV-MA | 130 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

62 Metascore

In 1905, a drifter on a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped sister tangles with a sinister religious cult on an isolated island.

Director: Gareth Evans | Stars: Dan Stevens, Richard Elfyn, Paul Higgins, Bill Milner

Votes: 59,071

Overrated 9 A dumb folk horror film that is just a little too stupid and overlong to work, this is perfectly passable but the reviews were far too kind. Additionally, it's a step-down for director Gareth Evans and a disappointing move away from his martial arts roots.

36. Mile 22 (2018)

R | 94 min | Action, Thriller

38 Metascore

A small team of elite American intelligence officers, part of a top-secret tactical command unit, try to smuggle a mysterious police officer with sensitive information out of Indonesia.

Director: Peter Berg | Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich

Votes: 86,884 | Gross: $36.11M

Underrated 9 This critically mauled Mark Wahlberg vehicle is actually OK all things considered. It's very rough-around the edges and plagued by messy pacing and bad editing, but nevertheless, it's a punchy, pleasingly brutal and refreshingly serious Hollywood movie with a great plot twist.

37. Annihilation (I) (2018)

R | 115 min | Adventure, Drama, Horror

79 Metascore

A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don't apply.

Director: Alex Garland | Stars: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Benedict Wong

Votes: 361,797 | Gross: $32.73M

Best 10 This is what science-fiction should be: an emotional, complex and deep odyssey into the most thought-provoking corners of our imagination and the use of the Otherworldly to explore what our ordinary, everyday lives actually mean. It is ludicrous and the CGI is awful, but otherwise this is an emotional, hypnotic and overall great piece from Alex Garland that deserved more than a Netflix release in most territories.

38. The Nun (2018)

R | 96 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

46 Metascore

A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Director: Corin Hardy | Stars: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons

Votes: 170,567 | Gross: $117.45M

Worst 10 A weak ghost story that represents all the terrible studio horror film tropes The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 avoided, this does actually have a few decent scares but since the film is so meaningless and poorly written there's just nothing to engage with at all. Overall, a waste of a great villain.

39. Early Man (2018)

PG | 89 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

68 Metascore

Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures and woolly mammoths roamed the earth, Early Man tells the story of Dug, along with sidekick Hognob as they unite his tribe against a mighty enemy Lord Nooth and his Bronze Age City to save their home.

Director: Nick Park | Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Maisie Williams, Timothy Spall

Votes: 23,819 | Gross: $8.27M

Overrated 10 Critics got it wrong, audiences got it right. Most probably don't even remember this came out in 2018, which is worrying since it's an Aardman film. A workmanlike and forgettable film, this has great jokes and animation but the plot is very dull, making it a 3 star film at best. Ignore the overly generous scores.

40. Robin Hood (2018)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

32 Metascore

A war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown.

Director: Otto Bathurst | Stars: Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn, Eve Hewson

Votes: 79,517 | Gross: $30.82M

Underrated 10 What is actually so bad about this movie? It isn't particularly good but it's really not that awful and it's certainly better than Ridley Scott's miserable and tedious Russell Crowe Robin Hood movie. It's got a pair of charming leads in Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx while Ben Mendelsohn is an awesomely hammy villain (evidently taking a leaf out of Alan Rickman's book) and it's got a modern, crazy and humorous style that sets it apart and makes it enjoyable to watch. Critics have been too mean to it.

41. Shoplifters (2018)

R | 121 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

93 Metascore

On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by loyalty, a penchant for petty theft and playful grifting. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence.

Director: Kore-eda Hirokazu | Stars: Lily Franky, Sakura Andô, Kirin Kiki, Mayu Matsuoka

Votes: 86,494 | Gross: $3.31M

Best 11 Although it's occasionally too mundane for its own good, this is otherwise a delightful, affecting and pleasingly un-manipulative drama and a very worthy Palme D'Or winner. If this won Best Foreign Film at the Oscars it'd be hard to complain.

42. Peter Rabbit (2018)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

51 Metascore

A rabbit sneaks into a garden to steal food, and they get a new challenge with a new owner.

Director: Will Gluck | Stars: James Corden, Fayssal Bazzi, Domhnall Gleeson, Sia

Votes: 48,147 | Gross: $115.25M

Worst 11 A horrible CGI rabbit tortures and bullies an innocent farmer for 90 minutes. Er, no thanks. This was let off the hook because it wasn't as bad as the trailers made it look, but it's still fairly bad. Good performances aside, this is too tonally jumbled, mean-spirited and annoying to work and everyone should just read the Beatrix Potter books instead.

43. Widows (2018)

R | 129 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

84 Metascore

Four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.

Director: Steve McQueen | Stars: Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki

Votes: 104,145 | Gross: $42.40M

Best 12 A good thriller story blessed with amazing directing and acting, this goes far beyond what most heist films are and ultimately emerges as a microcosm of sorts of America. The heist itself is the less interesting part ironically enough. Overall, another triumph for Steve McQueen.

44. Ocean's Eight (2018)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

61 Metascore

Debbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's annual Met Gala.

Director: Gary Ross | Stars: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling

Votes: 242,096 | Gross: $140.22M

Worst 12 This one is a bland movie for bland people. The direction is flat, the script is dull and save for Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway none of the cast members were even trying. It's not that it's terrible, as everything in it is competent, but it's that it's so forgettable and vanilla. The only reaction this will provoke is a passive shrug and that's maybe the worst reaction a film can get.

45. BlacKkKlansman (2018)

R | 135 min | Biography, Comedy, Crime

83 Metascore

Ron Stallworth, an African American police officer from Colorado Springs, Colorado, successfully infiltrates the local Ku Klux Klan branch aided by a Jewish surrogate who eventually becomes its leader. Based on actual events.

Director: Spike Lee | Stars: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, Topher Grace

Votes: 291,244 | Gross: $49.28M

Best 13 This is far more than just an important, timely bit of social commentary. It's a very well-written and acted drama with real personality, visual flair and subtext that marks a long-awaited return to awesomeness for director Spike Lee. The final third is a little weaker than what came before, but that doesn't spoil an otherwise thought-provoking yet highly enjoyable viewing.

46. Den of Thieves (2018)

R | 140 min | Action, Crime, Drama

49 Metascore

An elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew clash as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank.

Director: Christian Gudegast | Stars: Gerard Butler, Pablo Schreiber, O'Shea Jackson Jr., 50 Cent

Votes: 123,746 | Gross: $44.95M

Worst 13 Save for a strong Gerard Butler performance and a decent final act, this is a painfully overlong and largely tedious heist thriller with nothing to set it apart from other similar movies. There's nothing wrong with brainless action thrillers in principle, but they need to actually be, you know, thrilling, which is something this movie rarely ever is.

47. Deadpool 2 (2018)

R | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

66 Metascore

Foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.

Director: David Leitch | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison

Votes: 646,187 | Gross: $324.59M

Best 14 An improvement on its overrated predecessor in nearly every single way, this is funnier, more thrilling, better-plotted, better-structured, more affecting and this time around it actually is a different kind of superhero movie. Hilarious, smart and boasting several virtually perfect scenes, this is one of 2018's finest studio films.

48. Hold the Dark (2018)

TV-MA | 125 min | Action, Crime, Drama

63 Metascore

After the deaths of three children suspected to be killed by wolves, writer Russell Core is hired by the mother of a missing six-year-old boy to track down and locate her son in the Alaskan wilderness.

Director: Jeremy Saulnier | Stars: Jeffrey Wright, Alexander Skarsgård, James Badge Dale, Riley Keough

Votes: 40,400

Worst 14 Thanks to the weak narrative and awful second half that totally squanders the potential of the film's first half, this ends up being more or less a nothing film and a huge disappointment. It's a terrible comedown from Green Room for the director.

49. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

PG-13 | 147 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

87 Metascore

Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie | Stars: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg

Votes: 378,310 | Gross: $220.16M

Best 15 A relentless, exuberant and utterly insane action film from start to finish, this stands as the second-best Mission Impossible film after the fifth film three years earlier. Thanks to its tense plotting and amazing action scenes, it's definitely one of the best action films of the last few years, even if Henry Cavill's performance is terrible.

50. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.

Director: J.A. Bayona | Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith

Votes: 344,060 | Gross: $417.72M

Worst 15 Annoying, dour, generic and generally preposterous, this lacks common sense, good storytelling or the slightest bit of charm that defined the original film. As things stand, this is one of the worst Billion Dollar Movies. Anything which wastes Jeff Goldblum in a two-minute cameo was never going to work.

51. Black Panther (2018)

PG-13 | 134 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

88 Metascore

T'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.

Director: Ryan Coogler | Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira

Votes: 837,946 | Gross: $700.06M

Best 16 While its current status as the highest-rated superhero film ever on Rotten Tomatoes and calls for it to be nominated for Best Picture are pretty embarrassing, Black Panther nevertheless remains one of the MCU's finest; a powerful, political and exhilarating superhero spectacle with a real sense of artistry and gravitas to it.

52. The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)

Not Rated | 91 min | Comedy, Drama

69 Metascore

In 1993, a teenage girl is forced into a gay conversion therapy center by her conservative guardians.

Director: Desiree Akhavan | Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Steven Hauck, Quinn Shephard, Kerry Butler

Votes: 25,623 | Gross: $0.90M

Best 17 An Oscar-Bait film done properly, this is quite a bit better than it first looks. This drama about a gay-conversion camp is not an easy or comfortable viewing, but it is very powerful thanks to its strong performances and a screenplay that allows the tears to come naturally rather than forcing them out of you. Best of all, it marks a long awaited return to form for Chloe Grace Moretz, who proves she's still got it after several years of awful blockbusters.

53. Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

R | 141 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

60 Metascore

1969. Four strangers check in at the El Royale Hotel. The hotel is deserted, staffed by a single desk clerk. Some of the new guests' reasons for being there are less than innocent and some are not who they appear to be.

Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm

Votes: 164,701 | Gross: $17.84M

Best 18 This is a flawless Quentin Tarantino knock-off that's actually far better than most of Tarantino's movies. It's too long, but Drew Goddard's confident direction and clever script, not to mention flawless performances from the cast (Especially a brilliantly sinister Chris Hemsworth) ensure this is an utter joy to watch.

54. Halloween (I) (2018)

R | 106 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

67 Metascore

Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe, Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Director: David Gordon Green | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, James Jude Courtney

Votes: 169,152 | Gross: $159.34M

Best 19 They did it. After 40 years of disappointing sequels and reboots, this brutally tense, wonderfully violent and soulful Slasher flick is both an affectionate love letter to John Carpenter's original masterpiece and a great new take on the mythology. This is The Force Awakens of horror movies; also, Jamie Lee Curtis is just incredible. The horror movie of the year without a doubt.

55. Incredibles 2 (2018)

PG | 118 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

80 Metascore

The Incredibles family takes on a new mission which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.

Director: Brad Bird | Stars: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner

Votes: 331,474 | Gross: $608.58M

Best 20 This isn't as good as the original, but considering that the original film is a cinematic masterpiece on the same level as 2001: A Space Odyssey, that's hardly a negative. This retains the mix of spectacle and drama that made the original special and is a sequel that will satisfy the entire family.
