Votes: 331,493 | Gross: $608.58M

A mostly strong sequel which captures what everyone loved about the original film and serves up another satisfying mix of family drama and superhero action. It isn't as good as its predecessor, but it would be a miracle to be as good as that.

Votes: 664,099 | Gross: $400.74M

Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud | Stars: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews

Votes: 584,576 | Gross: $251.51M

Some bits of it are admittedly quite annoying and it's not that funny, but this animated movie has a lot of heart and charm for a movie about a super villain and the minions steal the show.

36. Puss in Boots (2011)

PG | 90 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

65 Metascore

A successful farmyard revolution by the resident animals vs. the farmer goes horribly wrong when the victors create a new tyranny among themselves.

Directors: Joy Batchelor, John Halas | Stars: Gordon Heath, Maurice Denham

Votes: 19,014

The ending misses the point of the source material, but otherwise cartoon animation has never been so sobering and hard hitting.

78 Metascore

In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

Directors: Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush | Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate

Votes: 546,689 | Gross: $341.27M

Another relatively safe piece of Disney formula that refuses to take risks, but it's got enough timely themes, spectacle and social commentary to make this a successful, though slightly overrated, family film.

39. Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015)

PG | 85 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

81 Metascore

When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.

Directors: Mark Burton, Richard Starzak | Stars: Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Omid Djalili, Richard Webber

Votes: 43,448 | Gross: $19.38M

Although too Hollywood to compare with Aardman's best work and inconsistent throughout, this clever and charming animated movie largely deserved its worldwide success and it's the worthy feature-length companion to the brilliant TV show.

Director: Trey Parker | Stars: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Elle Russ, Kristen Miller

Votes: 178,634 | Gross: $32.79M

It's one joke, uneven and not as funny as it could have been, but it's a demented, delirious and often funny comedy which will probably both offend you and leave you in stiches. Just don't expect to look at puppets the same way again.

42. The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

Director: Mark Dindal | Stars: David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, Patrick Warburton

Votes: 225,645 | Gross: $89.30M

A light buddy cop movie instead of anything deep, so it's not an ambitious Disney movie. Still, when it's so funny and clever, who cares? This is one not to be overlooked.

A slow-paced but beautifully animated and soulful piece from Wes Anderson. It isn't his best work, but it's full of memorable moments and deserves a Best Animated Film nomination come Oscar night.

88 Metascore

A man crippled by the mundanity of his life experiences something out of the ordinary.

Directors: Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman | Stars: David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan

Votes: 75,327 | Gross: $3.76M

Cynical, pretentious and self-indulgent, Anomalisa overcomes its flaws through amazing vocal performances from a cast of only 3 and many moving deep moments. Basically, in terms of being an animated film for adults it's Team America without the comedy.

48. Shrek 2 (2004)

Director: József Gémes | Stars: Claire Bloom, Joss Ackland, Roy Kinnear, Sally Ann Marsh

Unimaginative but harmless and unfairly panned animated movie with some disgusting goblins but plenty of good adventure sequences and some nice songs.

Rumpelstiltskin tricks a mid-life crisis burdened Shrek into allowing himself to be erased from existence and cast in a dark alternate timeline where Rumpelstiltskin rules supreme.

Director: Mike Mitchell | Stars: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas

Votes: 224,688 | Gross: $238.37M

Despite the lack of imagination, thanks to some good fight scenes and funny jokes it's nowhere near as irritating is its taglines.

51. Sausage Party (2016)

R | 89 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

66 Metascore

A sausage strives to discover the truth about his existence.

Directors: Conrad Vernon, Greg Tiernan | Stars: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Alistair Abell

Votes: 210,171 | Gross: $97.69M

Although Sausage Party doesn't quite manage to be what is was meant to be- a comedy- since it's too reliant on limp R-rated jokes and it isn't as good as it should have been, it succeeds as a brilliant story with many thought-provoking themes and some downright terrifying moments. Also, you'll never forget the last 20 minutes (Don't watch this one with your parents!).

52. The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)

PG | 88 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

73 Metascore

Directors: Peter Lord, Jeff Newitt | Stars: Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Martin Freeman

Votes: 51,443 | Gross: $31.05M

It's one of Aardman's weaker efforts and lacks a good plot but it showcases the eccentric action scenes and effective humour that made Aardman popular.

53. Cars (2006)

G | 116 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

73 Metascore

On the way to the biggest race of his life, a hotshot rookie race car gets stranded in a rundown town and learns that winning isn't everything in life.

Directors: John Lasseter, Joe Ranft | Stars: Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Paul Newman, Larry the Cable Guy

Votes: 470,399 | Gross: $244.08M

It's as visually stunning as ever but with a duller story and lack of heart it's Pixar's first misstep.

54. The Magic Roundabout (2005)

81 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

A group of friends embark on a dangerous journey in an effort to imprison their oppressor, the evil wizard Zeebad.

Directors: Dave Borthwick, Jean Duval, Frank Passingham | Stars: Robbie Williams, Ian McKellen, Bill Nighy, Kylie Minogue

Votes: 3,722 | Gross: $7.42M

Harmless but uninteresting, this is by the sound of it certainly better than the dreadful sounding American version and has some very good bits, but it's underwritten and doesn't cover any new ground.

55. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

PG | 102 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

77 Metascore

When Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.

Director: Dean DeBlois | Stars: Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson

Votes: 364,222 | Gross: $177.00M

Although the second half is stronger and it goes in interesting directions, it still feels so flat a dragon might have sat on it and everything wrong with the first is also present here.

A group of animals who have spent all their life in a New York zoo end up in the jungles of Madagascar, and must adjust to living in the wild.

Votes: 437,777 | Gross: $193.60M

We've seen animated animals talking hundreds of times before and since, but at least this particular effort is funny and has good moments here and there.

57. Toy Story 3 (2010)

G | 103 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

92 Metascore

The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.

Director: Lee Unkrich | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty

Votes: 892,879 | Gross: $415.00M

While nowhere near as good as the first 2 and lacking in strong action sequences or anything especially striking, this still has some big laughs and honest emotion. Please stop putting it above the other 2.

58. Early Man (2018)

PG | 89 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

68 Metascore

Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures and woolly mammoths roamed the earth, Early Man tells the story of Dug, along with sidekick Hognob as they unite his tribe against a mighty enemy Lord Nooth and his Bronze Age City to save their home.

Director: Nick Park | Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Maisie Williams, Timothy Spall

Votes: 23,818 | Gross: $8.27M

Despite good vocal performances and jokes, this is incredibly forgettable and workmanlike for Aardman. It's definitely one of 2018's most disappointing films, although most will have forgotten this was even released at all.

A perfectly pleasant animated feature which is devoid of a single memorable moment.

Director: Carlos Saldanha | Stars: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Seann William Scott

Votes: 296,706 | Gross: $195.33M

The scenes with the squirrel are hilarious and the animation is cool. The rest of the film? Not so much.

77 Metascore

Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce!

Directors: George Miller, Warren Coleman, Judy Morris | Stars: Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Robin Williams

Votes: 200,083 | Gross: $198.00M

This rather bizarre animated feature full of singing and dancing penguins should not have won the Oscar and has many a dull moment, but at the same time it's quite sweet and the animation is good. Might have worked better as a music video though.

62. Brave (2012)

PG | 93 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

69 Metascore

Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Steve Purcell | Stars: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters

Votes: 442,514 | Gross: $237.28M

Brave starts out fine, with plenty of big laughs, amazing animation and some good moments but then it takes misguided detours into strange and bizarre family lessons and the lack of actual action soon becomes un-bear-able (sorry).

63. Shrek (2001)

PG | 90 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Directors: Andrew Adamson, Vicky Jenson | Stars: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow

Votes: 734,601 | Gross: $267.67M

What is all the fuss about? It's one of those premises others will be jealous they didn't think of and the script's got a sharp edge but it's nowhere near as fun as you remember and lacks the charm of Pixar.

64. A Christmas Carol (2009)

PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

55 Metascore

An animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Steve Valentine

Votes: 129,570 | Gross: $137.86M

Visually dazzling but otherwise soulless, this OTT and unnecessarily scary adaptation of a fine novel is little more than another opportunity for Robert Zemeckis to dump us in the uncanny valley.

65. Megamind (2010)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

63 Metascore

Evil genius Megamind finally defeats his do-gooder nemesis, Metro Man, but is left without a purpose in a superhero-free world.

Director: Tom McGrath | Stars: Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey

Votes: 296,039 | Gross: $148.42M

Despite a great cast, an annoying, clichéd and dull storyline combined with unfunny jokes and a premise stretched far beyond serviceable length make this one to miss.

Director: Dave Filoni | Stars: Matt Lanter, Nika Futterman, Tom Kane, Ashley Eckstein

Votes: 73,093 | Gross: $35.16M

As robotic as a droid and featuring a stupid, overly complicated plot, the greatness of the earlier star wars movies is nowhere to be found.

67. Bolt (2008)

PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

67 Metascore

The canine star of a fictional sci-fi/action show that believes his powers are real embarks on a cross country trek to save his co-star from a threat he believes is just as real.

Directors: Byron Howard, Chris Williams | Stars: John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Susie Essman, Mark Walton

Votes: 229,073 | Gross: $114.05M

The most generic animated movie ever made? Maybe. How many times have we seen this story, these characters, these morals and these jokes? A hundred times at least.

Votes: 801,051 | Gross: $217.58M

Behold the most overrated animated movie ever! The visuals are great, but it's so flat a dragon might as well have sat on it and it lacks heart, humour and genuine excitement.

69. Shrek the Third (2007)

PG | 93 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Reluctantly designated as the heir to the land of Far, Far Away, Shrek hatches a plan to install the rebellious Artie as the new king while Princess Fiona tries to fend off a coup d'état by the jilted Prince Charming.

Directors: Chris Miller, Raman Hui | Stars: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas

Votes: 332,659 | Gross: $320.71M

A dry, unmemorable third outing for Shrek, which has some good action scenes but aside from that is weak, unimaginative and less sharp than the second one.

70. Cars 2 (2011)

G | 106 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

57 Metascore

Star race car Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix race. But the road to the championship becomes rocky as Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.

Directors: John Lasseter, Bradford Lewis | Stars: Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer

Votes: 218,171 | Gross: $191.45M

It actually happened. Pixar made a bad movie. It makes me sad to say this but Cars 2 is not good and few above the age of 10 would agree. It'll sell loads of toys, but otherwise it's poorly told and lacks a good plot.

71. Planet 51 (2009)

PG | 91 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

39 Metascore

An alien civilization is invaded by Astronaut Chuck Baker, who believes that the planet was uninhabited. Wanted by the military, Baker must get back to his ship before it goes into orbit without him.

Director: Kelly Asbury | Stars: James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith, Ashley Jensen

Votes: 59,695 | Gross: $99.97M

It may have sounded like a good idea at first, but this is ultimately an insult to Shakespeare and our intelligence since the jokes are utterly unfunny and the whole thing in general lacks energy.

G | 90 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

70 Metascore

A power-hungry sorcerer curses a princess to live as a swan by day in this tale of everlasting love.

Director: Richard Rich | Stars: Jack Palance, Howard McGillin, Michelle Nicastro, Liz Callaway

A truly dire Disney rip off which isn't worth watching for any reason. Stay away. You'll forget it after 10 minutes anyway.

Director: Mark Dindal | Stars: Zach Braff, Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Don Knotts

Votes: 100,883 | Gross: $135.39M

As intelligent as a headless chicken and many miles below Pixar movies, Chicken Little is still one of the worst films I've ever had the misfortune to see at the cinema.

75. The Emoji Movie (2017)

PG | 86 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

12 Metascore

Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji.

Director: Tony Leondis | Stars: T.J. Miller, James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph

Votes: 71,122 | Gross: $86.09M

Rightly hailed as one of the worst animated films ever, this is a creepy bit of product placement more than anything else. An unfunny, visually mediocre, dull and badly written feature-length commercial for everything phone-related, this is less enjoyable than 3 hours of car adverts.

76. Bee Movie (2007)

PG | 91 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

54 Metascore

Barry B. Benson, a bee just graduated from college, is disillusioned at his lone career choice: making honey. Directors: Simon J. Smith, Steve Hickner | Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Renée Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, Patrick Warburton

A terrible animated movie which has no originality, charm, humour, excitement or merit whatsoever, Bee Movie is less entertaining than a bee sting. Avoid like the plague.
