Something About Her — the West Hollywood sandwich shop started by “Vanderpump Rules” stars Ariana Madix and Katie Maloney — is officially open for business, after a long period in red-tape limbo. On Wednesday, more than 100 people lined up outside the bright awning before it had opened, waiting several hours to buy the highly anticipated sandwiches from this long-awaited restaurant.
A few days after the soft opening for friends and family, it was finally time to open the doors to the public. Variety popped in to check it out on the first day it was open.
“It was very, very exciting when we were opening the blinds,” Madix told Variety. “The line has been crazy. We’re just really grateful that all these people are not only willing to come and support, they’re also willing to wait. We are a small place, so, that’s been really awesome.”
And wait they did.

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. Just like with the network, we don’t have any official cutoff in terms of the years of films that we’re showing. But, interestingly — it’s the opposite of a cutoff,...

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.

Also announced Thursday:

Lindsay Lohan may not like watching her own movies, but admitted she got emotional when she saw her son watching one of her beloved films.
The actress stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday, where the host asked her whether she watches the films she had starred in. Drew Barrymore noted that she can’t because it feels “indulgent.”
While Lohan said she doesn’t seek out her movies, she will occasionally have one on in the background. “I mean, if someone wants to watch it and I’m there, I put it on and I’m like cooking in the kitchen or I have to run upstairs or I’m busy doing something else, ’cause it’s hearing my voice that I’m like, ‘Eh,'” she explained.

Robert Downey Jr. revealed last summer that his audition for Nancy Meyers’ “The Holiday” went poorly after Kate Winslet roasted his accent work. Now Winslet herself is admitting to hating Downey Jr.’s interpretation of the character ultimately played by Jude Law. Winslet recently appeared on “The Tonight Show” while promoting her new HBO series “The Regime” and was asked by host Jimmy Fallon if she remembered Downey Jr.’s audition. Fallon was in the room for it as he was reading for the role played by Jack Black, while Winslet and Cameron Diaz had already been cast and were reading their roles.
“I remember it extremely well. I really do,” Winslet said. “We were told it was just a reading. I thought it was just a reading, like a fun reading of the script. I didn’t know it was an audition for the part. I am so sorry you didn’t get it.

It was the year of 2015 when Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway starred in an iconic film called The Intern. With Nancy Meyers as the director and the writer of the film, the film was bound to be a successful one from the first day.
Hiring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in the lead roles was like giving Hans Zimmer a piano as their on-screen chemistry was quite extraordinary. Well, De Niro would go on to love the film so much that he regrets that Hollywood will not make movies like this anymore!

1994’s Miracle on 34th Street is filled with magical moments. But some were more enjoyable to film than others for actor Mara Wilson. The former child star, who played young Susan Walker, counted scenes with certain cast members as her favorite. Spoiler: Not Sir Richard Attenborough’s Kriss Kringle. Plus, some behind-the-scenes details about the film.
Wilson loved filming any ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ scenes with Elizabeth Perkins and Dylan McDermott
Wilson, who no longer acts, counted her favorite scenes to film in the ‘90s remake of the classic Christmas movie as the ones with two of her cast members. Not Attenborough, or even the reindeer in the courtroom, made the cut. Rather, her movie mom and dad.
“On set, anything that I got to do with Dylan McDermott and Elizabeth Perkins [was my favorite]; they were just lovely,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “In particular, the dinner table scene during Thanksgiving was really fun.

“I watch a rom-com every day, even if it’s just for five minutes,” says New York Times best-selling author, poet and artist Cleo Wade.
For Wade, rom-coms are just one of the many ways she connects herself with the love that she espouses in her work. Throughout her career, Wade has focused on innovative ways to connect — be it her lauded Instagram account or her “Are You Ok” booths, where she has deep conversations with strangers in public parks. “I’m always thinking of how I can create a friend or a companion for the people who can read my work as they go through their lives,” she says.
Wade’s new book, Remember Love: Words for Tender Times, encourages readers to find the love and stillness within themselves in a world filled with chatter. “I did hope when I was writing it that it could give people a...

The best way to enjoy the holiday season? Take some guilty pleasure in these fun rom-coms! Some of these will warm you up inside out. ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Romantic comedies with a holiday or Christmas theme have always been enjoyable. There’s a certain flair to them. They’ve always been a trend and are almost on par with classic holiday films like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.” Even better now — with streamers like Hallmark and Netflix, we have mass production of rom-coms and almost each one ends up being more enjoyable than the other — think “Love is in the Air” or perhaps Emma Robert’s “Holidate.” So, if you’ve run out of rom-coms to enjoy this holiday season, we’ve got you covered.

Is he really Santa? That’s the question actor Mara Wilson fielded about her co-star, Sir Richard Attenborough, over and over while filming the ‘90s remake of the classic Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street. Wilson’s response, which she later revealed, was to give the “polite” answer.
Sir Richard Attenborough ‘really’ felt ‘like Santa Claus’ to Mara Wilson
Although her character, Susan Walker, didn’t believe in Santa Claus, Wilson herself got Santa vibes from Attenborough. The former child star told Entertainment Weekly that as a child on set, the late actor, who died in 2014 at the age of 90, felt like Santa to her.
Recalling how “lovely” and “fun” Attenborough was to work with, Wilson shared that “he really did feel like Santa Claus” to her.
“He was so kind,” she added. “He made it a really fun movie to work on — even though it was kind of ridiculous...

The Holiday may have premiered in 2006, but nearly 20 years later it remains something of a modern classic in the Christmas movie genre. For those who watch the Nancy Meyers film every holiday season — this writer included — actor Cameron Diaz’s outfits are, in addition to the sets, just as covetable today as they were when The Holiday first hit screens. And, as it turns out, putting the looks together proved to be a memorable experience for Diaz.
Cameron selected her outfits for ‘The Holiday’ alongside Nancy in a room filled with cashmere
Diaz reflected on The Holiday in a 2020 interview, telling Vulture she and Meyers got to know each other the same day they picked her character Amanda Woods’ wardrobe. In the film, Amanda is a movie trailer maker from Los Angeles, California, who trades places with Kate Winslet’s Iris Simpkins to spend the holidays in England.

Nancy Meyers has written a love letter to Cary Grant by recommending his screwball comedies and classics like North by Northwest and The Philadelphia Story as part of the December 2023 Turner Classic Movies lineup in her own TCM Picks video.
“He’s a brilliant prototype for a leading man in a romantic comedy certainly. And I would be lying if I said I didn’t think of him sometimes as I’m writing. You can picture him doing it and it makes you better,” Meyers, whose rom-com canon includes box office performers like Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and What Women Want, tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Her TCM movie picks follow Meyers insisting she has viewed most Cary Grant movies dozens of times, not least to study the iconic star’s slapstick humor and verbal sparring with leading ladies to see beneath his debonair looks and onscreen charisma, to the...

Quentin Tarantino has been known to be very outspoken regarding both some of his favorite and least favorite movies. But what might’ve been surprising was him naming this Anne Hathaway picture one of the of its year.

Tarantino fancied himself a huge fan of the Anne Hathaway feature The Intern. Directed by Nancy Meyers, The Intern saw Hathaway play the successful founder of a fashion website who takes Robert De Niro’s character under her wing. Meyers explained that she first conceived the idea when she was on her way to another shoot.

EXmas is a delightful holiday rom-com featuring some classic but relatable tropes. While we may not find our ex at our holiday table, most of us have longed for a holiday like the Stroops share.
It features charismatic stars, including Robbie Amell as Grham and Leighton Meester as Ali. Michael Hitchcock and Kathryn Greenwood were hilarious and Graham’s holiday-obsessed parents.
Jonah Feingold loves directing com-coms, and he’s had great success with his two prior films, Dating in New York and At Midnight. We were excited to speak with him about how he directed Amazon Freevee’s EXmas.
Feingold spoke with us during a recent virtual press day about which holiday films inspired him, how he selected the cast, and how essential the family dynamics were to this film.
Check it out below.

Netflix is refocusing its movie studio to concentrate more on awards-bait and other high-quality films, but is that what its audience wants?
There were signs of life in negotiations between the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and major Hollywood studios this week. A new deal between the union and producers would mean that TV and movie production houses like Netflix could get back to the business of making content, and when that happens, Netflix has some big changes in mind for the future of its movie slate.
Netflix is shifting gears in its movie production goals, focusing less on producing a huge variety of films and more on improving the quality of those films. The streamer already has a film generating awards buzz this year, but an examination of its past film success reveals quality is not the most important factor for its audience.

In 2018, “Saturday Night Live” captured the public perception of Netflix as a ceaseless river of content. In a satiric ad, the late-night program hawked the streaming service as an “endless scroll,” promising that “by the time you’ve reached the bottom of our menu, there’s new shows at the top.” And when it came to movies, “SNL” joked that Netflix was so desperate for things to make, it had resorted to shooting the fake films from “Entourage.”
Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix’s film division, is the man responsible for feeding the algorithm, and for much of his six-year run, his mandate was clear: quantity, not quality. In 2020, for instance, Netflix announced it planned to release a new movie every week. It never got around to making “Medellín,” Vincent Chase’s passion project from “Entourage,” but the strain of producing so many films showed. For every Oscar winner like “Roma,...

Actor Kate Winslet took a break from starring in dramas to do the Nancy Meyers picture The Holiday. But although the feature was a lighthearted romantic comedy, Winslet asserted it was the hardest role she’d ever done.
Kate Winslet never played a modern English character before ‘The Holiday’ Kate Winslet | Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty Images
Winslet was aware of how different The Holiday was from her usual pictures. For one, the feature was a romcom, which Winslet seldom starred in. It also focused on a contemporary English woman, which Winslet also never really played before. Whenever the actor did play contemporary characters, like in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, they were usually American. But her Holiday character, Iris, was so similar to her that Winslet was uncomfortable in the role.

In Cord Jefferson’s idea-dense “American Fiction,” no one wants to publish literary professor Thelonious Ellison’s latest novel. Thelonious — or “Monk” to his friends — has delivered a modern reworking of Aeschylus’ “The Persians” (hardly bestseller material to begin with), but all the industry can see is the color of his skin. The editors compliment his prose, but want to know what this manuscript “has to do with the Black experience.” In frustration, he dashes off a parody of the thug-life trauma porn the world seems to want, submits it to his agent, and suddenly, he’s the “man of the hour.”
If that sounds like the setup for a lit-world “Bamboozled,” then you might be surprised by how even-tempered the film feels. First published in 2001 (the year after Spike Lee’s confrontational satire came out), Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure” had fangs. Jefferson files them down — not necessarily a bad thing,...

Toronto – The biggest surprise in Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, “North Star,” doesn’t occur in front of the camera. In this case, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham deliver exactly what you’d expect as three sisters reuniting for their mother’s latest marriage in the British countryside. Instead, it’s Scott Thomas’ abilities behind the camera that will raise eyebrows. The Best Actress Oscar winner demonstrates an impressive ability to stage a film with a glossy studio flick aesthetic that would make Nancy Meyers green with envy.

Robert Downey Jr. lost his chance at starring in the Nancy Meyers cinematic universe.
The Marvel actor revealed during SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” that he auditioned for 2006 romantic comedy “The Holiday” to star opposite Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. Downey went out for the role of a British single father who falls in love with Diaz’s character while she is in the English countryside after swapping houses with a stranger. Jude Law was eventually cast.
“We both got called in just as seat-fillers and we saw each other,” Downey said during an interview alongside Jimmy Fallon, who auditioned to play Winslet’s love interest before Jack Black was cast. “Jack Black is getting his part and Jude Law is definitely getting my part, but [Meyers] needed someone to read with the gals, and we’re sitting there going, ‘It’s about to happen for us.'”

Robert Downey Jr. and Jimmy Fallon crashed a recent episode of “The Howard Stern Show” and revealed they auditioned together for Nancy Meyers’ 2006 romantic-comedy “The Holiday.” Downey read for the part later played by Jude Law, while Fallon auditioned for Jack Black’s role. Both actors knew they weren’t Meyers’ frontrunner picks at the time, and Downey was well aware Law was stiff competition.

The dream of ’90s film is alive and thriving in Trần Anh Hùng’s “The Pot au Feu,” a movie that left intoxicated attendees at the Cannes Film Festival premiere both starving — given the film’s ambrosial depictions of just about every dish in the bible of haute gastronomy — and more fully sated on that precise “peak Miramax” style than from any film in at least the past decade.
If anything, this wonderful confection is an even more refined spin on those amber-hued period dramas that defined the upscale strata during the late-Clinton years. For bereft of narrative tension, and with a preference for steaks over stakes, “The Pot au Feu” might very well be the most handsomely shot and soothingly felt serving of art house food porn ever brought to screen. It’s about to become your mother’s favorite film, and it’s an absolute delight.

In the rose-gray light of dawn, Juliette Binoche strides through a verdant kitchen garden, wearing a straw hat as wide and undulating as an ocean wave. She plucks a majestically large, gnarled celeriac from the earth and sniffs it deeply and fondly, as if inhaling mythical ambrosia, and takes it back to the house. This is how Tràn Anh Hùng’s “The Taste of Things” opens, which is to say on a note of sensory reverence and a hint of kitsch, in knowing thrall to one of the less pretty vegetables in nature’s cornucopia. There are people — this critic included — who will watch this scene and immediately sense with a hungry tingle that the film to come has been made expressly for their palate, and there is everyone else. “The Taste of Things” is not for everyone else, and that’s just fine.

After Netflix and Nancy Meyers parted ways last month on the filmmaker’s comeback project over budgetary issues, Warner Bros. swooped in to start conversations. Though a deal hasn’t been confirmed, all signs point to a potential theatrical release, with A-listers Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson on board to star.
When THR bumped into Wilson at the premiere of his film Paint, the actor was optimistic. “Originally, it was intended as a streaming movie, but now maybe it’ll be theatrical [with Warner Bros.], and that seems like what you would want and expect from a Nancy Meyers movie,” relayed the actor, who opened up briefly about his conversations with Meyers before signing on.
“She just loves movies, and that’s what makes it fun — talking with her about the way this movie will look and the references for it through some of the older movies that she loves that I also love.

From pre-Code gangster films to Bette Davis blazing a trail for female protagonists to blockbuster super- hero sagas, Warner Bros. Pictures’ output has been synonymous with the most popular stories of the day — and the iconic filmmakers who brought them to life.
Since being installed in June 2022, Warner Bros. Pictures Group co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have steadily built upon this legacy that has been the foundation of the studio since its earliest days.
“The history of the studio and their approach to filmmaking over the years really lines up with our belief in marrying the right filmmakers with the right IP and the right stories,” Abdy tells Variety. Adds De Luca, “We just wanted to continue that practice of trying to be a good home for the preeminent filmmakers of the day — and then try and find that next generation as well.”

Exclusive: It’s been nearly three decades since Michael Mann’s crime classic Heat hit theaters via Warner Bros, and it now feels like Mann and the studio are finally feeling more heat around the corner for a sequel. While rumors have been swirling for weeks, Deadline is hearing that Warner Bros is now in negotiations to come on to develop Heat 2, a sequel to the 1995 classic that Mann recently turned into a novel. Jack Nicholson has had one of the more varied careers in Hollywood. He has appeared in smaller, intense independent dramas, broad comedies, Oscar-bait films, surreal experimental movies, and several well-moneyed Hollywood blockbusters. Indeed, Nicholson was involved in one of the more notable blockbusters of all time, Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman," where he played the Joker. Famously, Nicholson managed to negotiate a cut of the film's merchandising profits into his salary, making him a very, very rich man.
Nicholson has a talent for playing intense types of characters. He can be friendly or threatening, but he is an expert in taking up a room. In a way, his performance in Alexander Payne's 2002 dramedy "About Schmidt" might be his best, as it's the one notable time he's played a deliberately dull, buttoned-down character.
Given Nicholson's stature as a celebrity, one might think the actor had free reign to select whatever projects he wanted.

With the exit of long-tenured film executive Lisa Nishimura on Thursday, Netflix has officially entered its austerity age — whatever that may mean for the streaming powerhouse.
Nishimura’s 15 years at the company have spanned the streaming boom, Oscar wins and multiple restructuring efforts. Noted one industry veteran that has long worked with Nishimura, “It’s a signal that the most thoughtful, taste-driven era is being driven out.”
Under film head Scott Stuber, the film division was long bifurcated according to budgets: tentpoles and indies, with the former sitting around the $30 million to $40 million and way upwards, and the latter sitting below that. Former exec Tendo Nagenda, who joined the streamer from the four-quadrant heavy hitter Disney, oversaw films like the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man and the Extraction films, as well as the Knives Out franchise and The Old Guard. Nishimura’s team oversaw, well, most everything else.

Adam McKay, the director of Don’t Look Up, Vice, The Big Short, The Other Guys, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, and the Anchorman movies, is pitching his next film to studios and streamers – and, as you would expect from a director with a line-up of credits like that, it looks like this one is going to have multiple A-listers in its cast as well. Robert Pattinson is attached to star, and Robert Downey Jr. is among the actors who could end up in the supporting cast. The film is called Average Height, Average Build, and while McKay describes it as a “political dramedy”, the lead character happens to be a serial killer.
Update: Deadline adds that Amy Adams, Forest Whitaker, and Danielle Deadwyler are also up for roles.
Average Height, Average Build is said to be about a serial killer who gets into politics in an effort to change the laws to be more,...

Nancy Meyers is still searching for a new home for her film after parting ways with Netflix over budget concerns. But in the meantime, the director of rom-com classics like 2006’s The Holiday and Something’s Gotta Give has dropped some hints on Instagram, revealing details about her movie, confirming the title, and sharing its origin.
Deadline reported that Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz and Michael Fassbender were in talks to star, but that the proposed Netflix budget — which sources say was coming in around $130 million — was causing issues. Sources say that while the studio was fine with $130 million, Meyers was fighting for $150 million, with $80 million of that going to above-the-line costs.
The film is titled Paris Paramount, which we were first to tell you about in April 2022. It tells the story of an above-the-line filmmaking duo who reunite (begrudgingly) on set after falling in and out of love with each other.
