This year’s limited program writing Emmy contest is unique in that it is the first in five years to include any TV movies at all and the first in 13 years to involve three of them. The one-off narrative specials in the running for this honor are “Fire Island,” “Prey,” and “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” all of which are also nominated for Best TV Movie, and the middle of which has achieved the rare feat of concurrently being recognized for its directing.
While all three of these telefilms stand as relatively strong contenders, this writing race is being very comfortably led by “Beef,” which is the only program that can possibly win all seven of this year’s major limited series Emmys. Putting up fights of their own are the miniseries “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Swarm,” which both also face “Beef” in the corresponding lead actress and contemporary costumes categories.

It’s pretty common for limited series to be Emmy-nominated for both writing and directing, as demonstrated by current dual contenders “Beef” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” plus “The White Lotus” and the four 2022 shows it knocked out twice. The same cannot be said, however, for TV movies, which compete directly against non-continuing series in the composite Best Movie/Limited Writing and Directing categories. Prior to this year, no telefilm had achieved this nomination combo since 2014, but Hulu’s “Prey” just closed the gap, signaling a return to form for the genre.
“Prey,” which premiered in August 2022, is also gunning for the Best TV Movie Emmy and picked up bids for its sound editing, picture editing and music composition. Set in 18th century North America and featuring a primarily Indigenous cast, it serves as a prequel to the 1987 theatrical horror film “Predator,” which is now the nexus of a seven-part franchise.

Exclusive: Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s Night Swim from writer/director Bryce McGuire has added Amélie Hoeferle, Gavin Warren, Nancy Lenehan, and Jodi Long to the cast. The group have joined Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon in the pic which hits theaters on Jan. 19, 2024. Production is currently underway in LA.
Based on the short film created by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst, Night Swim is described as a supernatural thriller built around the hidden source of terror found in an unassuming backyard swimming pool. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are producing the film. Universal Pictures will handle distribution.
Hoeferle is a German-American actress who spent her youth in between the two countries. She will be next seen in Francis Lawrence’s prequel of Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes for Lionsgate. She plays “Vipsania Sickle,” mentor to a tribute from District 7. An actress receiving two Primetime Emmy nominations in a single year may seem like a rare occurrence, but it is actually fairly common. In fact, there have been 65 instances since 1967, including two last year involving Aidy Bryant and Jean Smart. What is uncommon is a woman earning double recognition within the same genre, with Bryant being one of only a dozen to ever be so honored (discounting guest categories). Now, Toni Collette has a shot at becoming the lucky 13th.
For her work on the two limited series “The Staircase” and “Pieces of Her,” Collette could be nominated this year as both a featured player and a lead. On the former show, she plays Kathleen Peterson, the subject of a real early 2000s murder case that ended in the conviction of her husband, Michael. Her potential supporting notice for playing Peterson would be her third in the category following bids...

At the first Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 1995, Jason Alexander won the Best TV Comedy Actor prize for “Seinfeld,” defeating, among others, “Frasier” pair Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce. In the nearly three decades since, there have been 22 more costar showdowns in this category, all but two of which ended with both or all actors going home empty-handed. Since he is currently up against two duos, Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”) could easily benefit from this statistic, depending on whether or not he meets certain criteria.
The surest way for a comedy actor nominee to beat a set of costars is to be a category veteran. In 14 of the 21 cases in which a duo or trio have both or all lost to someone else, the winner has had between one and eight past bids here. This applies to Douglas, who is on his third outing for this series...

Fresh off his Emmy win for his supporting turn on “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters is sitting pretty in first place in our Screen Actors Guild Awards odds for limited series/TV movie actor. Just like at the Emmys, this would be his first SAG Award nomination, and should he take home the prize on Feb. 27, he’ll become the category’s second youngest winner ever.
Peters turns 35 on Jan. 20 and would be just the second thirtysomething to win the award after Darren Criss, the youngest winner at 31 when he triumphed for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” in 2019. Prior to Criss, Gary Sinise was the youngest champ, having been 40 when he prevailed for “Truman” in 1996. Sinise nabbed a second statuette two years later for “George Wallace.”

A dozen years after being honored with his first Screen Actors Guild Award for the TNT movie “Door to Door,” William H. Macy conquered a second TV category – Best Comedy Actor – as the star of “Shameless.” Although his 2015 victory was directly followed by a loss to Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”), he bounced back by triumphing twice more in 2017 and 2018. This made him the second of only three men to win four individual TV prizes, between Alec Baldwin and Tony Shalhoub. Now, months after the series finale of “Shameless,” he has a strong shot at bringing his career win total to five by being rewarded for his work on the show one more time.
Adapted from the popular British program of the same name, Showtime’s “Shameless” stands as the longest-running scripted series in the network’s history, having aired from January 2011 to April 2021. Macy starred on all 11 seasons as parasitic patriarch Frank Gallagher,...

“It feels good! I won’t lie to you, it’s really good,” two-time Emmy winner William H. Macy admits about his sixth and final Emmy nomination for Showtime’s “Shameless,” which wrapped its eleventh and final season earlier this year.
“It was so unexpected. I mean, our show has been running for 11 years and. I thought we’d sort of slipped away out of people’s consciousness, except for the fans who wanted to see how it ended. It felt wonderful, like a big fat cherry on the best cake anybody ever had,” he declares. Watch our exclusive video interview with Macy above.

Last Year’s Winner: Eugene Levy, “Schitt’s Creek”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Repeat winners are still trendy in the Best Comedy Actor category. Bill Hader won in back-to-back years for “Barry” (2018 – 2019), Jeffrey Tambor won twice for “Transparent” (2015 – 2016), and Jim Parsons saw repeat wins for “The Big Bang Theory” in 2013 and 2014, after doubling up in 2010 and 2011. With 2020 winner Eugene Levy out of the running, we won’t see a hot streak established in 2021, but there’s no reason to think this won’t be the year that starts one.
Fun Fact: Ted Danson has the most nominations in the Best Comedy Actor category with 14, spread across just two shows (three for “The Good Place” and 11 for “Cheers”). Overall, the walking, talking American treasure has 18 Emmy nominations and two wins (both for “Cheers”), with additional nods stemming from his work in the FX drama “Damages” and the 1984 TV Movie “Something About Amelia.

Television Academy voters aren’t necessarily a nostalgic bunch when it comes to sending off departing shows or series cast members with one final Emmy. Last year, of course, was a tremendous exception, as most of the cast of “Schitt’s Creek” — including creators and stars Eugene Levy and Dan Levy — landed wins in their respective acting categories, and the show also snagged the comedy series statue.
The Emmy record books are filled with worthy contenders who never got to taste a win for their signature series. But the award for lead drama actor has managed to buck that trend and allow performers to go out in a blaze of Emmy glory. Over the past decade, Emmy voters managed to squeeze out wins for the stars of some of TV’s most celebrated shows — just under the wire. That has included final season Emmys for Matthew Rhys, Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston.

“Black Mirror’s” loss could be HBO’s gain. After three straight Best TV Movie Emmy victories for various episodes and not meeting the new 75-minute runtime requirement, “Black Mirror” is forced to compete in drama this year, paving the way for HBO to claim its record-extending 22 win in the category with “Bad Education.”
It may be hard to remember after the “Black Mirror’s” three-peat, which followed “Sherlock’s” victory in 2016 for its special episode “The Abominable Bride,” but the Best TV Movie category used to be HBO’s domain. The network started off with a bang in 1993, triumphing in a tie for its films “Barbarians at the Gate” and “Stalin,” and then ran the table for the rest of the decade.
Since 2000, HBO has racked up 13 wins; besides the last four years, its other 21st-century losses occurred in 2000 (ABC’s “Tuesdays with Morrie” won), 2003 (TNT’s “Door to Door...

Sorry, Darren Criss, but your reign as the youngest Screen Actors Guild Award winner for limited series/TV movie actor looks to be short-lived. “When They See Us” star and Emmy champ Jharrel Jerome is the frontrunner to take the prize in January, and like Criss just did, he’d destroy the record.
Criss was nine days shy of his 32nd birthday when he prevailed on Jan. 27 for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” becoming the first person in his 30s to win the award and shaving nine years off of the previous record held by Gary Sinise, who was 40 when he won for “Truman” in 1996. Sinise took home a second statuette two years later, for “George Wallace,” and currently occupies two spots in the top five youngest winners.
At 22, Jerome would, obviously, be the first twentysomething to win — just like he was at the Emmys — and knock off another nine years.

The Cars were near their commercial peak when they agreed to perform at Live Aid in the summer of 1985, but there was so much talent packed onto the bill at JFK Stadium for the event that even a string of recent hits didn’t help them score a slot better than midway through the show. They came out at 5:39 pm, right after Kenny Loggins played “Footloose” and before Neil Young’s extended set.

It might be hard to believe, but Angela Bassett has never won an Emmy before. She’s now her fifth nomination after making the Best Narrator lineup for her work on Nat Geo’s “The Flood.” If she prevails, not only will she get her first statuette, but she and husband Courtney B. Vance has a perfect record at the Emmys, converting his first nomination into a win in 2016 in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for his performance as Johnnie Cochran on “The People v. O.J. After racking up big box office for nearly three decades, funnyman Jim Carrey could crack the Emmy race this year with his starring role in the new Showtime series “Kidding.” Carrey has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for his series, which casts him as a popular children’s puppet show host trying to piece his life back together after the sudden death of his son. It’s not uncommon for actors to have won both Oscars and Emmys, especially in the current era of peak TV. But it’s particularly impressive to win on your first try. And it’s rare to win both on your first try. Rami Malek could be the latest to pull off that trick: he won Best Drama Actor at the Emmys for “Mr. Robot” (2016) on his career-first bid, and he may be on the cusp of winning Best Actor at the Oscars on his rookie nomination for playing Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Talk about beginner’s luck.

Darren Criss not only completed his awards sweep at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” but he’s now the youngest winner ever in the limited series/TV movie actor category.
Criss, who turns 32 on Feb. 5, is the first person to win the award in his 30s and is nine years younger than the former record holder, Gary Sinise, who was 40 at the time of his victory for “Truman” in 1996. Darren Criss became the second youngest person to win the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor Emmy for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” in September. Deadline Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond gives his take on the top acting contenders for the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards. Here, he breaks down the categories of Outstanding Lead and Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Three newcomers to this category add some fresh blood to make it just a bit more interesting. One is a multiple former Emmy winner—decades ago, in the same category—and a beloved TV star; another returns after an extended hiatus from production and the Emmy Race, while the third is a major SNL star who struck out on his own and created, stars in, writes and directs the darkest entry by far. On the other end of the equation are returnees Anthony Anderson of Black-ish, 14-time nominee William H. Macy, and last year’s winner Donald Glover. The latter probably holds the title of frontrunner,...

“It’s really between Bill Hader and Donald Glover,” Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria declares about the Emmy for Best Comedy Actor. “They have both had very successful seasons,” he adds, noting however that he is “veering towards Glover because he really has had his moment in the spotlight this particular year.” Licuria recently debated managing editor Chris Beachum, the original Gold Derby duo, in a series of slugfests this week about all six lead acting races at the Emmys. Watch their lively discussion about Best Comedy Actor above.

William H. Macy received his fifth Emmy nomination in 2018 for playing Frank Gallagher, the outright horrible father of the Gallagher clan on “Shameless.” In total Macy has received a whopping 14 Emmy nominations for his work as an actor, writer, and producer. He won for two of those nominations back in 2003 for his acting and writing the TV movie “Door to Door.” While he has yet to take home an Emmy for “Shameless,” he has won the Screen Actors Guild Award three times. Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that William H. Macy is entering the “Shameless” episode “Sleepwalking” as his Emmy submission for Best Comedy Actor. This installment aired January 28 and was the 12th episode of the eighth season for the Showtime show.
In this segment, Frank Gallagher (Macy) is planning a robbery of Dylan’s house when he leaves on vacation as “one more big score.” He recommends to Fiona that she should “burn out” her unwanted tenants. Jessica Biel received her first career Emmy nomination last week, for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for “The Sinner,” and her husband Justin Timberlake was just as pumped as she was. He tweeted his excitement and commented on her Instagram post. Proud hubby all around. And if Biel takes home the gold, she and Timberlake will join a long line of married couples who’ve won acting Emmys.
A four-time winner, Timberlake has “Saturday Night Live” to thank for all his statuettes. He won two for songwriting (“Dick in a Box” in 2007 and his 2011 monologue) and two for Best Comedy Guest Actor, in 2009 and 2011. “She was unfortunately blindsided by this situation and was naive and ignorant about the whole situation. Think how confusing and how complicated and difficult for her,” reveals actress Kathy Baker about her role in the recent HBO TV movie “Paterno.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she discusses the real-life character of Sue Paterno, who was the wife of disgraced Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, played by Al Pacino.
The film is directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”) and depicts the fallout in 2011 of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal, splitting its time with scenes featuring Oscar champ Pacino (“Scent of a Woman”) and others starring Riley Keough as Sara Ganim, the tough young reporter who would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize for breaking the story.

William H. Macy took home took home the Male Actor in a Comedy award at the SAGs on Sunday night for playing the alcoholic patriarch on Showtime’s “Shameless.” This makes two years in a row for Macy, who had won in an upset against favorite Jeffrey Tambor for “Transparent” last year. In light of the recent #MeToo movement and allegations of sexual misconduct against Tambor, the actor wasn’t in the running at all this year.
“Even our lines are given to us by writers, it’s our job… to tell the truth,” said Macy. “I think it’s a glorious way to make a living especially in this day and age when people don’t think that’s important.”

Everything this awards season has been going Gary Oldman’s way. He’s already won the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” And he is currently the overwhelming favorite to win the SAG Award. But are we overly confident he’ll win? No Brit has won for playing the famous prime minister. Check out our gallery above of all the actors who’ve brought Churchill to the small and big screens.
Playing Churchill has proven to be a great way to win an Emmy as Albert Finney (“The Gathering Storm,” 2002), Brendan Gleeson (“Into the Storm,” 2009) and John Lithgow (“The Crown,” 2017) all won in a span of 15 years for their interpretations of the iconic figure. But ironically only an American — Lithgow — also won a SAG Award.
For Finney, who had already won an Emmy and Golden Globe, it was a matter of timing.

In a competitive situation, Half, a half-hour single-camera comedy from 22-year-old actor-writer Matt Angel, has been bought by NBC with Sony TV producing. Veteran Greg Malins (Friends) is set as showrunner, and Matt’s dad Dan Angel (TNT’s Door To Door) is attached to exec produce. Based on a true story, Half centers on the journey of Riley Young, a quirky 13-year-old conceived through artificial insemination, who convinces her dysfunctional family into embarking on a search for all of her half siblings. In the era of crowdfunding, Matt Angel used the popular financing tool to get his project in the door. Half is based on a pilot presentation, for which Angel raised money on Kickstarter. He then optioned the short film to Sony. As an actor, Matt Angel, who got on stage at age 6, has done a slew of guest spots, including an arc on Hub’s R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour,...

ITV has been rapped by media regulator Ofcom in relation to a stunt on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!
Ofcom received 66 complaints from viewers over an "exploitative" 'Door to Door' challenge on the long-running reality TV competition.
Charlie Brooks - the eventual winner of the series - missed out on the opportunity of being reunited with her 7-year-old daughter Kiki, after she chose the wrong door that she was hiding behind.
Ofcom's published report said that it had "serious concerns" about Kiki's involvement in the adult programme.

Good luck avoiding the calories Girl Scout cookies bring you this year. The organization is making it even easier to get a hold of your favorite flavor of cookie. Friday, February 8, is National Girl Scout Cookie Day, which kicks off a three month season of sales. The country will be knee-deep in Thin Mints and Samoas all Spring. If you're feeling adventurous you could even try out the new flavor, Mango Cremes with Nutrifusion, which seem to be a way to trick yourself into thinking you're being healthy.
In the past you had a few options to get your fix. Door to door sales were one way, you could also hope a friend had a kid in the Scouts, or maybe they would be set up in front of a grocery store. However, in 2013, technology has finally caught up to the Girl Scouts. An app has been released for iPhone and Android phones,...

New York — On "Shameless," William H. Macy plays the world's most deadbeat dad.
He stars as Frank Gallagher, a boozy, shiftless grifter whose brood of six mix-and-match offspring (do any of them share the same mother?) care for one another and, by necessity, him. The oldest daughter, Fiona (played by Emmy Rossum), is the family's de facto mom, a Wendy to Frank's derelict Peter Pan.
"Derelict" is putting it mildly. Frank is abrasive, self-absorbed, scheming and delusional, a pickled patriarch whose most dignified moments find him passed out on the bathroom floor of the family's ragtag South Chicago digs, or on a random street corner or maybe public park.
But somehow the family stays afloat, even with Frank dragging everybody down.
"For all the craziness they go through, it is a tight-knit family, an honest family that loves each other fiercely," says Macy. "That's what the show is about."

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! producers have come under fire for involving Charlie Brooks's daughter in a challenge. On last night's (November 27) show, 7-year-old Kiki was featured in the Door to Door task, in which contestants had to pick from a line of doors to see if there was a treat behind them. As Kiki waited behind the yellow door, she could hear her mother's voice. However, the EastEnders star and fellow contestant Eric Bristow - whose son was also behind the door - failed to choose the yellow door. They only discovered their family members had been behind one of the doors after David Haye and Rosemary Shrager got to see their loved ones by selecting the right door. Charlie said: "I swear to God, it felt like someone had taken a boot and kicked me in the guts. I didn't even think having a...
