Less IS more in this case.
S_Soma2 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Most found footage horror movies only rate about a 1 or 2 even when, to be charitable, you only rate and review them relative to others of their own kind. THE BLACKWELL GHOST does bill itself officially as a "documentary" but it's structurally and procedurally indistinguishable from a found footage horror movie. Remarkably, in a field largely populated by 1's and 2's, THE BLACKWELL GHOST probably ranks as a reasonably solid 5 and does so around a "less is more" approach.

The movie only has three characters: Turner Clay who does practically everything, including most of the filming and is the star, his wife, and a fellow named Greg who is the owner of the haunted house that is most of the focus of the film.

In general, the plot line is simple but sturdy. Turner has decided he's tired of making low-end zombie movies and thinks it might be fun to make a pet project movie that "proves" the existence of ghosts, assuming that he can. It's not that he particularly believes in ghosts, but he just thinks it might make a worthwhile "documentary" if he can pull it off.

After a bumpy start, having posted his interest in haunting stories on some appropriate forums, he is contacted by a man named Greg who says he owns and has lived in a haunted house for nearly half a century. So off Turner and his wife go to Greg's house to spend a few days and see if they can't catch something on film. Ostensibly this should be easy since Greg calmly tells Turner that paranormal activities pop up almost every day and at least every other day.

Why all the ghostly activity? Well, several decades ago a crazy lady by the name of Ruth Blackwell lived in the house and, for some unspecified reason, decided to murder a few local children, chop them into pieces, and drop them down the old well in the basement of the house. Alrighty then... Does sound like a surefire recipe for ghosts to me.

THE BLACKWELL GHOST follows the usual found footage recipe of filming mostly mundane activities while building to a few-minutes-long crescendo of extra scary stuff right before the end. Usually there isn't enough interesting action to fill an entire movie and so it pretty much has to be all compressed into the end to get viewers to hang on long enough to see the entire picture.

If there were any fewer special-effects in THE BLACKWELL GHOST there wouldn't be any at all. You never actually SEE any paranormal activity at all, just the after effects. Various noises, thumping's, and banging sounds, doors which were closed are found open, various faucets turned on repeatedly no matter how often you turn them off, a kitchen stove that turns itself on, and vague, barely perceptible whitish shadows moving across frame are all you ever get in terms of paranormal activity. In fact, the happenings are so low-key that Turner's wife, who is in the same house WITH Turner WHILE everything is happening mind you, doesn't even believe anything unusual is going on. It's just her big, doofus husband being himself.

What makes THE BLACKWELL GHOST better than most in its genre, in spite of its meager pallet, is a small collection of stylistic elements that Turner Clay manages to imbue into the movie. I suppose the keyword here would be "believability", which is something lacking in most found footage movies. Turner himself is a large, rather affable and pleasant fellow whose demeanor is pleasant and low-key and lends an air of "genuineness" to the proceedings. Turner's wife does a good job being a wife that clearly thinks her husband is being a doofus but is making at least a minimal effort to be supportive.

Greg comes across as sincere and legitimate for the few minutes that we see him discussing his experiences in his haunted house. It does, however, stretch credulity to the breaking point when we hear Greg calmly discuss the fact that he's been living in this situation for more than half a century. He's just, you know, a regular guy living alone in a very actively haunted house all by himself in a regular old residential neighborhood for half a century. Uh huh.

The set up and premise of the movie seems to be more believable than what one usually gets in most found footage movies, or is, at the very least, far less outlandish. The basement that is the apparent origin of the hauntings creeps the hell out of you just sitting there; that is seriously one of the creepiest damn basements I have ever seen. And supposedly, right there in the corner, is the very same notorious well that some insane woman dumped diced children into.

Even the fact that the movie has an unusually short run time, a few seconds less than an hour with credits included, works for the movie because you don't have time to have your eyes rolling up with boredom as you do with most such movies.

But do notice that I only said it's about a 5. As better as it is than most found footage movies, it still has glaring holes. Here's two of them:

The haunted house homeowner, Greg, has been living in this house and experiencing "paranormal activity" on nearly a daily basis for half a century. Just the exposure that Turner received over the course of 2 or 3 days had him practically running screaming from the house by the end. The idea that someone would live with daily haunting activity for half a century is just not believable.

The execution of the well prop in the basement is simply ridiculous. It's depicted as a large, probably cast iron affair, standing about a foot high and bolted to the floor. Topping it off is a supposedly super-heavy manhole-cover-like lid. When we get a peek inside the well, we see that the water level is perhaps at most 5 inches below the top rim of the well which is significantly higher even than floor level. In the real world (in somewhat of a simplification), wells are drilled down to the basic water table which is nearly always tens or hundreds of feet below ground level. The depicted well has the water table level ABOVE the floor of the basement in dry weather. At the very least the basement should be flooded and perhaps the entire neighborhood should be slowly sinking out of sight into the ground.

So, as essentially a "let's make a movie in the garage" effort, THE BLACKWELL GHOST is worth watching and is generally more convincing than most in its field, even as lightweight as it is.

Actually good

This is actually a good movie. Considering it had no budget it does a good job, better then many medium budget found footage ghost movies.

It's short and sweet. I liked it.

I liked it a lot!

Warning: Spoilers
I actually had a lot of fun watching this and enjoyed it a lot! I won't put down any intentional spoilers. I don't know if there's really anything to give away anyway.

Of course, it's not a "documentary" but it really felt like one to me. I liked that it really did feel like an amateur idiot guy just trying to put together a ghost documentary. Lots of little embarrassing things were included that made it seem more real than scripted, like not being able to find the house right away and a natural dialogue that didn't feel scripted.

No cheesy stupid jump scares that I remember, just weird stuff going on that actually creeped me out. I think if you can suspend your disbelief and put yourself in their shoes, which is easy since it's from their point of view, you'll get creeped out, too.

My biggest problem is with the guy's attitude. It didn't bother me at all at first - I just felt like he was frustrated because things weren't working out as planned with his first attempt at trying to contact someone and then just that he was getting kind of scared and didn't want to admit it, but as the thing went on, he felt more and more like a whiny jerk to me, especially when barking out orders to his wife. In a way, that made it feel all the more real, him being an imperfect jerk, but it got on my nerves.

I actually would have liked to have seen more interaction with his wife because she played off him so well, but she made it pretty obvious that she wasn't a fan of being on camera. She was just helping him out and, despite her sarcasm, she was obviously supportive - and often unintentionally hilarious.

I've watched it a couple times now and will watch again. Definitely recommend for fans of these kinds of faux-paranormal movies.

Convincing enough
racheyroxrs21 July 2018
I liked this movie because it wasn't over acted and seemed pretty genuine. Enough that I just combed through my watch history to find it.(i forgot the title) it want the best, but it was entertaining and didn't seem to be super cheesy and phony like most of these kinds of movies.

As horror goes it's pretty minimal.Using a very active imagination I scanned every scene looking for that ghost. It wont be everyone's cup of tea but watch it alone,at night with lights out and yea it does have its moments. The best lost film footage is definitely hell house llc which I cant praise enough.

My message to Turner Clay, should you read this.
brandonlewissmu14 January 2022
I get* what you were initially doing with the films. Nothing over the top. Just enough to be unnerving but never enough to make a skeptic cry foul. 5 films in, however, you've kind of picked sides. Though you still present the movies as real, I can't imagine many people are still under that illusion. The fact that I've watched all 5 is a testament solely to how enjoyable you are as a character. These movies are nothing more than average without your character.

My point is that it's time to amp it up. Show us the supernatural. Throw it in our face. You're letting us off too easy. We know it's not real..and that's perfectly fine. You make them feel real enough that going full force with the scares and showing us ghosts won't hurt your films. They'll make them THAT much better. So, take a chance. Amp it up.

fun and minimalistic
phenomynouss10 February 2018
Pushing itself as a real life legit documentary, complete with not having a cast listing or director or anything on the description and only being an hour long, this one was surprisingly fun.

it has much of the hallmarks of a typical caught on tape ghost stuff, while being extremely minimalistic with regards to what goes on and what is actually shown. A lot of the spooky ghosty stuff is very small, things like turning on faucets and opening doors, and rarely goes beyond that. Something about being extremely delicate with its ghosty-ness makes it much more interesting and effective at sustaining long, drawn-out moments of anxious tension far better than a cheap jump scare would ever manage.

I thought it was fun

Most of these fake "ghost hunting" things try too hard and take themselves too seriously. I really enjoyed this one. First, I don't believe in the paranormal so I just enjoyed it for what it was. A scripted look at what a "ghost hunt" might be like. The host was entertaining and it moved pretty well. It wasn't trying to be a "scary movie" or horror film so don't expect that. It was a "tongue-in-cheek" creation of what a supernatural investigation might look like if there really did turn out to be something creepy going on. It was a perfect length for my attention span, too! And I thank them from the bottom of my heart for not once using those super cheesy audio recording I often see in these things. "Did you hear that? It clearly said 'get out!'" No...it didn't.

It was a fun watch. Just my opinion.

Your first clue should be the internet

Warning: Spoilers
Try googling anything about Ruth Blackwell. Fake. Never happened. Not real. This "crockumentary" really tries hard to beat Blair Witch. It can't. The acting is awful. So are the really bad video effects.

I was stupid enough to believe it
carmel-0351021 February 2021
I genuinely believed the description when it said it was authentic. I watched with my boyfriend and i told him i thought it was real and he had to convince me it was just a movie and i still wasnt convinced until i read all the reviews and now i feel like an idiot. That being said i think it was awesome. The acting was really organic and convincing it really did just seem like a guy investigating ghosts on his own. The way the movie is shot it feels very real and the story flows very well. I enjoyed this way more than obviously fake movies like paranormal activity. This was not obvious to me and very enjoyable.

I like it cause it's hilarious
kotsotu10 April 2024
The editing and timing are great. The acting is good and the guy is funny.

There is not one, not even a single iota of second that I thought this was real. If you're caught up over that alone, grow up.

If you're caught up over no jump scares, grow all the way up. It's not even classified as a mockumentary. Why would there be jump scares? Are you 12?

For some reason, the makers of this film left it up to the viewer to decide if it's real or if there is even purpose. I really don't care. It's a fun movie.

Some people actually believe it's real. I don't know why, but more power to them.

I actually got a little scared at the "climax"....it felt more or less real.

It's not nearly the best thing I've ever seen, but I enjoyed it. It's less than an hour. Fast-paced and straight to the point.

But I don't know what the point is other than to be entertaining and maybe to encourage people to make up their own mind.

Definitely not worth the watch.
puigeth3 April 2021
Even though its only an hour long, it was super drawn out and longwinded, it's a really long time building up and had no pay off. Acting was awful, the script was poorly written, the spooks and scares were complete misses.

Such an obvious vanity project that ended with a flop instead of a bang.

I'm a big horror fan, I've seen my fair share of found footage/documentary style movies, but this was like paranormal activity on a quarter of the budget and and missing the latter half of the movie.

2nd half is interesting but falls way short in realistic category.
frankblack-7996118 February 2021
Too some low intelligence people that need to believe in this stuff, it might get them going. I am a believer and have watched almost everything out there. Still haven't seen a doc that sets up cameras to leave no doubt that what i am seeing is not manipulated by off screen gagets and stagehands. This one doesnt even try to get it right. Instead you are going to hear about equipment failure to justify no seeing whats going on around the pov. Interestingly enough, the ones that do come prepared to capture anything almost never do. Because they can't. This is very rare phenomena that cant be easily proven. Just enjoy the show and make a game of pointing out the gaps in the narrative. Was a decent try, but just watch this guys movies. Hes decent, but not great. This film reflects that. The main problem is none of us who would do this right ever will have the money or connections to try. Such is life.

Not Real
JonnyDR7518 November 2022
This film was labeled as a documentary on Prime, so I watched as I'm interested in the paranormal. I began to have my suspicions throughout viewing, because so many intense, physical activity was occurring. After some research, I discovered it's fake and neither Blackwell nor the murders ever existed. Even the initial footage shown at the hotel in the beginning of the film can be linked to the filmmaker, which was even more disappointing because he was accusing the man who apparently captured the footage of being a fraud. It turns out he was the real fraud. I wish Prime would recategorize this as horror instead of a documentary, because it is inaccurate and misleading.

The low marks on this are criminal!
berg-7453211 January 2020
This is the best of the fake/real ghost documentaries and it's not even close. It is done so well that it seems almost real. It's so low key and lacks the unrealistic jump scares of most every other fake/real ghost Doc's that have been puked out by every idiot with a cell phone. In every movie but more so the dozens of ghost hunting tv shows it's starts with a bold statement that this could be what proves ghosts exist and followed by periodic excitement when a chair moves and they pull out some electronic device that they say picks up ghost voices. And when they are done these people will claim this is real proof. This may use some of those tools but not once does anyone say that this is proof it's showed and there it is. You can't watch this and judge it as a horror movie you have to look at it as it could be real if you can't do that you won't enjoy it. But considering that is what you have to do with almost all horror movies that aren't based in on some real event and even those movies screw with the truth you should be able to do it for this.

Please kick the ball next time. And add some ghosts.
fedor819 August 2020
If you can sit through this non-event without fidgeting, complaining or going insane, then you must have the patience of a saint. Ever considered a career as a Buddhist monk? You should. Or a yoga instructor. Or you could teach anger management classes, helping the highly-strung to count to 10. Or 100. Or 10,000.

This one-hour "movie" (if we can call it that, and I tend to believe we can't) is possibly the most tedious found-in-sewage waste of time ever made. The positive reviews must be all from Buddhist monks and relatives of this Z-horror "film-maker".

This "movie" sets out to "find out whether ghosts are real." Rather than convince me they are real, the movie re-iterated my firm belief in the power of monotony. The power of tedium is a force to be reckoned with, something single-cell prisoners can all attest to. Ironically, they might be the only demographic that would enjoy this movie. I mean, not enjoy it AFTER they leave prison (or just solitary confinement) but DURING their stay in a tiny, windowless prison cell, if someone handed them a TV set. Only someone locked up in a concrete box could find this even remotely interesting, dare I say exciting.

The most exciting moment is when the "film-maker" threatens to kick a ball. He never does though. Because he didn't want to ruin his perfect non-action track record.

That TBG has several sequels is fascinating. Perhaps in those films the writer/director set out to prove not that ghosts exist but that very bad, obscure, shoestring-budget movies can have sequels...

This utterly boring garbage could not have cost more than what... 500 bucks? Maybe I can make a horror film too. I could film lower parts of my body: that would scare most people.

I've seen 10-minute YouTube clips ABOUT movies that cost more than TBG. And look superior. And are far more interesting. But that goes without saying: anything is "far more interesting" than TBG, even the cardboard pizza boxes this "film-maker" used to pay his cast with. A cast of amateurs, of course.

Unemployable amateurs. Who look as bored as I felt. It is impossible to convey how long an hour can be, unless you check out TBG. Then you'll know.

A bit creepy
mshrew-4369523 July 2021
Gotta say that as I went to bed after watching The Blackwell Ghost that I heard noises and was generally very unsettled. I'm watching The Blackwell Ghost 2 but the interior of the house reminds me of the exact set up of Bad Ben. Anyone else notice?

This film is DULL. There are no scares. None. And the ending is exceedingly weak. I am suspicious that many of the reviews on here are fake. Watch at your own risk (of dozing off).

Of all the "goats docus" out there, this one was pretty good
Petrinidesign7 April 2018
I'm a huge skeptic of films capturing the paranormal, but this was actually pretty good. Is it real, who knows. But I can say this. I've watched hundreds of horror and paranormal movies. In fact it's, something of that nature is on, pretty much 24/7 at the house. This seemed believable! I don't know why it's rated this low but I give it a solid 8.

Warning: Spoilers
Well you assume it's fake but don't let that get in the way. You are drawn in by a free lance documentarian and his wife. You get a little background, he makes amateur zombie videos to post on the internet and gets his ghost videos from the internet (sound info right?). The house, the documentary maker and his wife fly to was found on the internet with a supposed clip of a haunting. The host tells the ghost hunter of his own parent's death in different parts of the house and nonchalantly mentions a women who was suspected and convicted of murdering young children by cutting them up and throwing the bodies down a well. The well is really a huge well, weird. Hmmmm, it's looking a little manufactured, but go with it. Then the last 20 minutes is really scary! It was a fun ride and I'm sure the sequels will only dampen my attitude, plus they cost more to rent on top of the Amazon Prime subscription. So one and done seems the best way to go.

It took me a while to watch this one. Something about the poster made it seem cheap. Having said that, it's certainly not a big budget flick, but it has charm. It did succeed in actually creeping me out a few times and wanting to turn the lights on. Aside form the main guy seeming incredibly full of himself, I think he did a great job with this!
