40 Greatest Directors

The top ten are ordered, but after that there's no particular order. In writing this list, I took a number of factors into consideration. Primarily, I looked at: a) the quality of the existing filmography and, in some cases, my confidence in the future filmography of a director based on what they have developed (in this case, a director may make it onto the list with even a limited filmography so long as it is excellent and important. quality comes first but quantity is an undeniable plus) b) the mark left on both the film industry and the art of film-making as a whole, including influences over the work of other directors c) the apparent style of the director within his films and how his own artistic expression shines through his work and finally d) diversity of subject matter in films (a truly great director should be able to make movies about a diverse number of topics).
