Top Things To See

by bam_mongara_14 | created - 25 Aug 2013 | updated - 26 Jan 2014 | Public

Although I may not be the most critical of a movie watcher I have seen a lot of movies in my day. Most have been average but these movies and a few TV shows listed have impacted me in some way and I also feel portray a good underlying message. Leave your comments at the bottom if you care to partake in what you feel is not on here or what should be higher. I will tell your right now don't get going on the Godfather, *beep* is *beep* boring if it is good acting, *beep* is DULL! Also there is a few classics that I haven't seen such as gladiator, skyfall, braveheart and others so once I view them I will be sure to add to the list.

From an innocent chemistry teacher to most baddest character to even grace the screen, Walter White is the main reason why this show flourished. With probably the best ensemble of cast put together this show is the greatest of all time with a great ending and action packed, always on your toes 5 seasons.

Votes: 429,583 | Gross: $48.32M

Two words.... MIND *beep* this movie has left breathless and in awe of how not only did they give me a ride but also the main character Michael Douglas. I couldn't help but still not believe it ended the way it did. But without a doubt best thriller I have ever seen, David Fincher is a true mastermind.

4. The Prestige (2006)

PG-13 | 130 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine

Votes: 1,441,737 | Gross: $53.09M

Another Christopher Nolan great. Looking two magicians fighting to one another and each guy ups one till the very end. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale were perfect for the two roles and Christopher Nolan does an exceptional job of telling the story.

5. Warrior (2011)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Drama, Sport

71 Metascore

The youngest son of an alcoholic former boxer returns home, where he's trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament - a path that puts the fighter on a collision course with his estranged, older brother.

Director: Gavin O'Connor | Stars: Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison

Votes: 498,052 | Gross: $13.66M

Most inspirational movie I have seen. Tom Hardy is my straight up boy! He solidifies what sacrifice is and also dedication to the craft. Nick Nolte and Joel Edgerton as well give great performances to match Hardy's. The director mixed a great combination of sports MMA action with acting to mould a standout movie. The two brothers (Hardy and Edgerton) have so much built up towards each other that the ending only seems fit.

6. True Romance (1993)

R | 119 min | Crime, Drama, Romance

59 Metascore

In Detroit, a pop-culture nerd steals cocaine from his new wife's pimp and tries to sell it in Hollywood, prompting the mobsters who own the drugs to pursue the couple.

Director: Tony Scott | Stars: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer

Votes: 242,573 | Gross: $12.28M

Written by the lively Quentin Tarantino this movie, although not directed by Tarantino, is a classic Tarantino-esque film. With Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette delivering great performances and showing good chemistry. Gary Oldman having an awesome cameo, and the scene with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken justs makes it a classic. Also Brad Pitt although not a significant character, adds some humour to it by being a stoner. This movie is a very entertaining one!

7. American History X (1998)

R | 119 min | Crime, Drama

62 Metascore

Living a life marked by violence, neo-Nazi Derek finally goes to prison after killing two black youths. Upon his release, Derek vows to change; he hopes to prevent his brother, Danny, who idolizes Derek, from following in his footsteps.

Director: Tony Kaye | Stars: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien

Votes: 1,186,638 | Gross: $6.72M

Edward Norton really went all out for this one. Probably the best performance he has given just surpassing another performance he gave that is also on this list. The story of skinheads living in California may seem a bit one sided but it has you still routing for the anti hero, Derek (Norton). The movie is quite graphic and dark but it still delivers a strong message of how people can change.

8. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

R | 99 min | Crime, Thriller

81 Metascore

When a simple jewelry heist goes horribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn

Votes: 1,088,607 | Gross: $2.83M

Quentin Tarantino engraved his name in the Hall of Fame with this masterpiece. The story is told in a very interesting way and has some great scenes of acting and also of course, violence. What would a Tarantino movie be without violence, but its always awesome and entertaining none the less. Michael Madsen's scene will always stand out from this movie, and I will never go without thinking of this movie when I hear Stuck in The Middle with You.

9. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

R | 133 min | Drama

84 Metascore

In the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.

Director: Milos Forman | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Michael Berryman, Peter Brocco

Votes: 1,072,719 | Gross: $112.00M

Although the book is a much better medium the movie does do it justice. Jack Nicholson not playing RP McMurphy would have made this movie a sham. As well Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched should also not going unnoticed since they both received Oscars from their roles. This movie is all about the relationship between Ratched and the "sick" patient McMurphy. It is a great movie but I would definitely recommend the book before the movie.

10. Inception (2010)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

74 Metascore

A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe

Votes: 2,551,972 | Gross: $292.58M

This Christopher Nolan one is a great one! Although most dummies don't understand it at first, and it takes a couple watches to really understand it, it is a gem! A cast with DiCaprio, Hardy, Caine, Gordon-Levitt and Page make this movie a smash! It took the genius mind of Nolan a long to create such a complex and deep movie as this and it should definitely not go unnoticed or underappreciated. The ending still gets me everytime too.

11. American Psycho (2000)

R | 102 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

64 Metascore

A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.

Director: Mary Harron | Stars: Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage

Votes: 716,091 | Gross: $15.07M

Christian Bale's performance is by far the best he has ever pulled off! A true arrogant and self-obsessed business guy who has absolutely no sentimental value for people it is still a great one to witness. Patrick Bateman the anti-hero still has that charm and charisma that still makes you want to be on his side if when he is slashing Jared Leto or many others for that matter. What really stood out was the confession scene, Christian Bale in that scene showed some amazing acting chops and went from sad to crazy all once. I researched a little about this movie and the ending once you see it is at it seems.

12. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

PG-13 | 164 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

78 Metascore

Eight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman

Votes: 1,828,208 | Gross: $448.14M

13. The Departed (2006)

R | 151 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg

Votes: 1,422,803 | Gross: $132.38M

This movie probably has one of the best casts put together in a long while. Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen and Mark Wahlberg it is a star-studded cast. The story is even greater about two cops one as mole working for the mob (Damon) and one as an undercover cop designed to find out about the mob (DiCaprio). Jack Nicholson being the don of the mob also adds that perfect crazy-Jack persona to the character Frank Costello. The movie just gets a lot more intense as both Damon and Dicaprio are closer to finding out the rat on each side. Eventually it leads to an ending that you have to see for yourself...

14. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

PG | 115 min | Action, Adventure

86 Metascore

In 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies

Votes: 1,037,142 | Gross: $248.16M

15. The Warriors (1979)

R | 93 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

65 Metascore

A street gang known as the Warriors must fight its way from the Bronx to its home turf on Coney Island when its members are falsely accused of assassinating a respected gang leader.

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Michael Beck, James Remar, Dorsey Wright, Brian Tyler

Votes: 110,735 | Gross: $22.49M

Although not a movie of substance or context it has a lot of nostalgia and just has that cool factor. It is about a gang called the Warriors having to "bop" their way back to their turf Coney Island. However since every gang in the city thinks they shot the leader of the most powerful gang in New York, Cyrus, they are on the run from them all. Originally Cyrus and his gang the Riffs called a citywide meeting in the park for all the gangs to attend. Cyrus proposing a truce amongst all the gangs in order to conquer the city. But once the cops show up and try and crash the meeting, in the heap of all the fleeing from the police, Luther head of the Rogues shoots Cyrus. With everyone in a panic the Warriors flee the scene and try and make it home, only they have no idea that Luther ratted them out to the Riffs and said the Warriors shot. Now the Warriors are in for a long night having to fight against other gangs and also amongst themselves to stay together as one to make it back. And even when they get Luther and the head of the Warriors Swann face off in a one-on-one battle. CAN YOU DIG IT!!

16. What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

PG-13 | 118 min | Drama

73 Metascore

A young man in a small Midwestern town struggles to care for his mentally-disabled younger brother and morbidly obese mother while attempting to pursue his own happiness.

Director: Lasse Hallström | Stars: Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen

Votes: 254,156 | Gross: $9.17M

Another great book turned into a movie. Gilbert Grape has some wacky and bizarre characters in it. It also has great acting by Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Darlene Cates. It bases around a family living in a small town Endora. The main character Gilbert Grape is the goto guy in the family to fix problems and be the man of the house. Only he wishes to get out and start his own life but with his obese mother and mentally-challenged brother it is hard to just pack up and leave. Leonardo plays the mentally challenged brother of Gilbert, Arnie. This early role in Leo's career is awesome and probably one of his best performances as an actor. He really makes you think he is mentally challenged. He adds comic relief and also there are times where he seems too much to handle. Darlene Cates plays the obese mother who delivers a strong motherly performance. The movie is a great one.

17. Primal Fear (1996)

R | 129 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

47 Metascore

An altar boy is accused of murdering a priest, and the truth is buried several layers deep.

Director: Gregory Hoblit | Stars: Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Edward Norton, John Mahoney

Votes: 247,199 | Gross: $56.12M

With the hotshot lawyer, Richard Gere thinking he cannot lose and is the best lawyer out he faces a tough test when he comes across a seemingly black and white case. The suspect, Edward Norton is a choir boy who looks as though he murdered the priest who was performing sexual acts on the boys from the church. As Gere tries to defend Norton he stumbles upon Norton's alter-ego. Norton's one side Aaron being the harmless innocent choir boy and the other Roy, a tough and angry guy that comes out when Aaron becomes scared. In the end it makes for one heck of an ending at for me, it is in my top 5 craziest endings. Edward Norton delivered in this movie

18. Lawless (2012)

R | 116 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

58 Metascore

Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a trio of bootlegging brothers are threatened by a new special deputy and other authorities angling for a cut of their profits.

Director: John Hillcoat | Stars: Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Jason Clarke

Votes: 253,527 | Gross: $37.40M

Another movie with my boy, Tom Hardy. Hardy playing the eldest brother of the three Bondurant boys. The other two played by Jason Clarke and Shia Labeouf are all part a family moonshining business. But when the slick and greasy cop from Chicago comes in to get his share of the action Hardy calmly and fiercely says, NO DEAL. Shia the youngest wants to become a gangster and feels he is old enough to sell by himself only then do we see that he only gets himself into more trouble. The whole movie is a battle between The Bondurant brothers and the new deputy from Chicago Guy Pearce's, Riggs. The first showdown between the two is just awesome and just makes you want to see Hardy kick the living pulp out of Pearce.
