Fantastic Five-Hundred Films, Epics Rank Higher
by mastersandbastards | created - 25 Aug 2022 | updated - 1 month ago | PublicThe last century and decade of notable movies. This list does not necessarily relate to commercial success but has to do with the quality of the film and somewhat to its impact on society in my opinion. Pre-1960s movies generally rank lower than their true impact due to the massive improvement of quality (and technology) of production over the last century. Many low budget movies make the list despite their production limitations, because of their overall societal impact and or the quality of the story of the film, now seen retrospectively. Slasher movies generally do not fair well on this list due to their lack of sophistication and plot.

What more can be said? The perfect ending to the perfect trilogy. We will never see this again. Peter Jackson nailed it! His adaptation of J. R. R. Votes: 854,023 | Gross: $108.33M
This was a powerful movie. Though it is more oriented toward audience members with a healthy attention span and a level of sophistication, it still had great general appeal. The plot is complicated, and Denis Villeneuve tackled it beautifully, thus making the complex world building in Dune an asset. Great writing, directing, plot, pacing and casting. This movie also featured mind-blowing CGI, physical props, and sound effects. The acting and dialogue were superb. Its only weakness is that it needs a sequel or two to complete the story. This movie would have ranked between one and five on this list if it had a more complete ending, but then it might have run into the danger of what happened to "Dune" 1984. Overall, "Dune" 2021 is more than excellent.

The best boxing movie ever! It also happens to be a true story. Russell Crowe does an astounding job playing heavyweight boxing champ James J. Braddock. A dramatization of the battle that was widely heralded as a turning point of the Pacific Theatre of World War II.
Director: Jack Smight | Stars: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford
Votes: 21,486
This movie was long before CGI and the producers used a lot of actual war footage (some of it taken in later WW2 battles) as well as 1970s footage showing modified angle-deck, left-over WW2, Essex Class aircraft carriers. Much of the depicted equipment was not from 1942 and was too modern. However, this movie was magnificent in scope and in fleshing out the strategies, timing and circumstances of this 1942 Naval battle, which is often regarded as the greatest Naval air battle in history. The acting, casting, plot and directing were superb. Aside from “Hamburger Hill,” “Waterloo,” and the German version of “Stalingrad” this is one of the most underrated war movie of all time. In fact, "Midway" probably is. All the aforementioned war movies are not as good as 1976 “Midway.” Pacific Theatre WW2 historians will usually hold it in very high regard. The modern CGI of the high budget 2019 “Midway” version was far better at consistently depicting the right aircraft and aircraft carriers. The notable 2019 remake held its own. However, the 1976 version was far better.
16. Titanic (1997)
PG-13 | 194 min | Drama, Romance
A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.
Director: James Cameron | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates
Votes: 1,280,115 | Gross: $659.33M
At the time of its release, 1997 “Titanic” was regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. The casting was fantastic. The producers spared no expense in prop designs or special effects. This movie’s budget was about $200 million at the time of its release, which would cost about $369 million today (in 2022). It was a wonderful romance and period drama that captured a page from the bygone era of 1912. It was nostalgic, but also emotionally capturing and a perfect fictional adaptation of a true historic event. With this possible exception: the original Star Wars trilogy movies, 1997 “Titanic” was the top earning movie of all time when the dollar was adjusted for inflation. That may have changed, but I doubt it. All the movies that outrank “Titanic” in earning have been released in later years with a larger U.S. and world population and, therefore, more ticket buyers and more impactfully, with all purchases coming from dollars that depreciate every year. I can't say why this movie’s status has decreased in public ranking over time, but I do know the movie was as historically and theatrically impactful on society as the actual tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

"Dune" 1984 is not as good as the more modern "Dune" 2021. However, this David Lynch directed epic, based on the extraordinary Frank Hebert novel, of the same name, is far better now in hindsight then its initial commercial success would have you believe. Some of the special effects were sort of clunky and 1980s looking, even less impressive than Star Wars and Alien, which were both made before "Dune" 1984. Shoving the entire "Dune" novel into one movie was ham-fisted and destined for failure. However, this movie still generated more than a few sparks of greatness. A Dune fan who allowed himself or herself, could be immersed in this cinematic experience. As clumsy as it was to attempt to transform this great novel into one single movie, it's also a point of strength that the entirety of the story is wrapped up in one movie. Having said that, I would rather watch "Dune" 2021 and its eventual sequel or squeals if they can maintain the power, character, story and pacing of "Dune" 2021. By the way. This was not only a great story, but it also had wonderful casting. There were parts of the movie that were simply great! There were other parts that felt rushed, stiff, or mechanical. The overall experience for a Dune lover was still wonderful.

This movie was not as good as "Midway" 1976, but it had many strengths. "Midway" 2019 had great casting and acting and a very good story to tell. I was very impressed that this movie told most of the story through the eyes of hero dive bomber pilot Dick Best. The CGI was perfect in its portrayal of the actual equipment used in this battle, from dive bombers to 1942 WW2 aircraft carriers. Despite it's star-studded cast and the commendable acting, this version of Midway didn't build suspense like the 1976 version of the movie, nor did it fully clue the audience in on the behind the scenes strategies, timing and luck that allowed the veteran Japanese naval air wing to get caught in such a vulnerable situation. I highly recommend "Midway" 2019, but it is somewhat of a shadow of "Midway” 1976.
