101. A Lonely Place to Die (2011)

R | 99 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

A group of mountaineers in the Scottish Highlands discover a kidnapped girl and are pursued by her captors.

Director: Julian Gilbey | Stars: Alec Newman, Ed Speleers, Melissa George, Kate Magowan

Votes: 30,710

A tense, gripping thriller where the tension is brutal, the direction is spot on and despite the totally irritating characters, you're still on the edge of your seat whenever they're in danger thanks to the ferocious suspense.

102. RED (2010)

PG-13 | 111 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

60 Metascore

When his peaceful life is threatened by a high-tech assassin, former black-ops agent Frank Moses reassembles his old team in a last-ditch effort to survive and uncover his assailants.

Director: Robert Schwentke | Stars: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker

Votes: 324,007 | Gross: $90.38M

While the action sequences lack, this blasts its way through plenty of genuinely fun jokes and has a sense of charm and enjoyment that many action movies lack.

103. Panic Room (2002)

R | 112 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

65 Metascore

A divorced woman and her diabetic daughter take refuge in their newly-purchased house's safe room when three men break-in, searching for a missing fortune.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam

Votes: 297,023 | Gross: $96.40M

This home invasion thriller is elevated to above average thanks to Jodie Foster and David Fincher, although even back then Kristen Stewart was ruining movies and among the other giants in Fincher's filmography it feels relatively slight.

104. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

PG | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

61 Metascore

British agent James Bond goes undercover to pursue the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is planning to hold the world to ransom.

Director: Peter R. Hunt | Stars: George Lazenby, Diana Rigg, Telly Savalas, Gabriele Ferzetti

Votes: 99,491 | Gross: $22.80M

It takes too long to get going and we have to put up with George Lazenby for more than 2 hours but apart from that, this is a powerful and exciting Bond movie and one of the best.

105. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

R | 152 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

76 Metascore

A journalist is aided by a young female hacker in his search for the killer of a woman who has been dead for forty years.

Director: Niels Arden Oplev | Stars: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Ewa Fröling, Lena Endre

Votes: 223,381 | Gross: $10.10M

It's weaker than the American film, but it is better in certain areas. Strong performances across the board and a clever plot filled with atmosphere more than make up for the lack of action.

106. Double Indemnity (1944)

Passed | 107 min | Crime, Drama, Film-Noir

95 Metascore

A Los Angeles insurance representative lets an alluring housewife seduce him into a scheme of insurance fraud and murder that arouses the suspicion of his colleague, an insurance investigator.

Director: Billy Wilder | Stars: Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson, Byron Barr

Votes: 167,525 | Gross: $5.72M

Time hasn't been kind to it, but it remains beautifully scripted and massively influential.

107. Gone Girl (2014)

R | 149 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

79 Metascore

With his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry

Votes: 1,067,964 | Gross: $167.77M

Overlong and overhyped, David Fincher's unflinching, haunting and sublimely acted thriller is still a strong entry to his filmography.

108. Rollercoaster (1977)

PG | 119 min | Action, Crime, Drama

A blackmailer threatens to sabotage roller coasters at various American amusement parks if he isn't paid a huge ransom.

Director: James Goldstone | Stars: George Segal, Timothy Bottoms, Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda

Votes: 6,916

Another underrated movie, this is fairly slight but it has loads of tense, clever thrills and manages to make a roller coaster crash better than the one in Final Destination 3 with a far smaller budget.

109. Evil Under the Sun (1982)

PG | 117 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

61 Metascore

Trying to find how a millionaire wound up with a phony diamond brings Hercule Poirot to an exclusive island resort frequented by the rich and famous. When a murder is committed, everyone has an alibi.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Peter Ustinov, James Mason, Maggie Smith, Colin Blakely

Votes: 20,201 | Gross: $6.11M

An insanely fun murder mystery with a grade A plot and plenty of delightful detective mayhem with a fabulous cast.

110. Phone Booth (2002)

R | 81 min | Crime, Thriller

56 Metascore

Publicist Stuart Shepard finds himself trapped in a phone booth, pinned down by an extortionist's sniper rifle. Unable to leave or receive outside help, Stuart's negotiation with the caller leads to a jaw-dropping climax.

Director: Joel Schumacher | Stars: Colin Farrell, Kiefer Sutherland, Forest Whitaker, Radha Mitchell

Votes: 285,880 | Gross: $46.57M

It's fairly limited and slight but with the excellent performance from Colin Farrell and the smart, tense thrills, it's difficult to believe this is from the director of Batman and Robin.

111. Point Blank (1967)

Not Rated | 92 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

86 Metascore

After being double-crossed and left for dead, a mysterious man named Walker single-mindedly tries to retrieve the money that was stolen from him.

Director: John Boorman | Stars: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Carroll O'Connor

Votes: 23,247

While unaffecting on an emotional level it benefits from great cinematography and an interesting plot.

112. The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

Not Rated | 87 min | Crime, Drama, Film-Noir

Fascinated by gorgeous Mrs. Bannister, seaman Michael O'Hara joins a bizarre yachting cruise, and ends up mired in a complex murder plot.

Director: Orson Welles | Stars: Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles, Everett Sloane, Glenn Anders

Votes: 33,336 | Gross: $0.01M

It has the worst Irish accent ever committed to film and isn't as good as Citizen Kane, but it's a compelling and beautifully shot noir with plenty of rug pulls and visual wonders.

113. Shutter Island (2010)

R | 138 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

63 Metascore

Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Mortimer, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley

Votes: 1,457,783 | Gross: $128.01M

Although it can be both predictable and dull from time to time, it has great direction and acting to compensate, and it's clearly the work of a master.

114. Taken (I) (2008)

PG-13 | 90 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

51 Metascore

A retired CIA agent travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been kidnapped while on a trip to Paris.

Director: Pierre Morel | Stars: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser

Votes: 634,727 | Gross: $145.00M

Logic is completely absent from this action thriller which hasn't exactly influenced Liam Neeson's career very well but while the many films it inspired haven't been as good, this awesome action ace boasts suspense, an excellent lead performance and a huge amount of dumb fun with a pleasingly gritty tone.

115. The Fate of the Furious (2017)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

56 Metascore

When a mysterious woman seduces Dominic Toretto into the world of terrorism and a betrayal of those closest to him, the crew face trials that will test them as never before.

Director: F. Gary Gray | Stars: Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez

Votes: 254,037 | Gross: $226.01M

The franchise is evidently entering its last stretch but for all its narrative flaws F8 is still a fantastically good time. The last 40 minutes are pure brilliance on every level.

116. The Departed (2006)

R | 151 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg

Votes: 1,422,999 | Gross: $132.38M

A well-acted and directed thriller that succeeds as an entertaining commercial product but largely fails to go deep enough to justify awarding it Best Picture when Children of Men wasn't nominated.

117. The Grey (2011)

R | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

64 Metascore

After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.

Director: Joe Carnahan | Stars: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Dallas Roberts

Votes: 263,404 | Gross: $51.58M

It's a bit too depressing and Liam Neeson never actually fights any wolves. Still, the deep humanity of the film and the thrilling moments mean this is more memorable than other films of its kind.

118. Die Hard 2 (1990)

R | 124 min | Action, Thriller

67 Metascore

John McClane attempts to avert disaster as rogue military operatives seize control of Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C.

Director: Renny Harlin | Stars: Bruce Willis, William Atherton, Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald VelJohnson

Votes: 383,213 | Gross: $117.54M

It goes the motions, but in a good way. It's not as witty as the original but it's got loads of energy and there's a strong sense of tension throughout.

119. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

R | 127 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

85 Metascore

In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet Agent within MI6.

Director: Tomas Alfredson | Stars: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong

Votes: 212,573 | Gross: $24.15M

Complex, confusing and cold, this is a brilliantly acted and filmed movie which drags its viewers through a slow, complicated plot without giving them many explanations or reasons to be massively involved with its characters.

120. Dr. No (1962)

PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

78 Metascore

A resourceful British government agent seeks answers in a case involving the disappearance of a colleague and the disruption of the American space program.

Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Bernard Lee, Joseph Wiseman

Votes: 179,475 | Gross: $16.07M

It's far from the best in the series, as it takes too long to get going but it's still rare to find so much escapism, humour and great performances all in one movie.

121. Furious 6 (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

61 Metascore

Hobbs has Dominic and Brian reassemble their crew to take down a team of mercenaries: Dominic unexpectedly gets sidetracked with facing his presumed deceased girlfriend, Letty.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez

Votes: 417,034 | Gross: $238.68M

No runway in the world is that long, people can't jump from car to car like that in real life and no-one could catch anyone in mid-air like Vin Diesel. Still, who cares? It's fun!

122. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

52 Metascore

James Bond sets out to stop a media mogul's plan to induce war between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global media coverage.

Director: Roger Spottiswoode | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh, Teri Hatcher

Votes: 204,741 | Gross: $125.33M

It follows the Bond formula and ticks all the boxes without adding any new ones, but despite the laughable villains it's difficult not to enjoy the electrifying action sequences and entertaining plot.

123. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

85 Metascore

Jason Bourne dodges a ruthless C.I.A. official and his Agents from a new assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer.

Director: Paul Greengrass | Stars: Matt Damon, Edgar Ramírez, Joan Allen, Julia Stiles

Votes: 658,415 | Gross: $227.47M

Overly downcast and featuring the most boring action hero ever committed to film, this is still well directed and has a more interesting plot than normal.

124. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

PG-13 | 108 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

73 Metascore

When Jason Bourne is framed for a CIA operation gone awry, he is forced to resume his former life as a trained assassin to survive.

Director: Paul Greengrass | Stars: Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Joan Allen, Brian Cox

Votes: 487,055 | Gross: $176.24M

It sometimes threatens to drown in grit and pointless misery and Matt Damon is officially the most boring action hero ever committed to film, but it's the rare movie which turns shaky cam into an art and it has an interesting plot.

125. Wanted (2008)

R | 110 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

64 Metascore

A frustrated office worker discovers that he is the son of a professional assassin, and that he shares his father's superhuman killing abilities.

Director: Timur Bekmambetov | Stars: Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Terence Stamp

Votes: 408,714 | Gross: $134.51M

A ludicrous popcorn flick with Fast and Furious levels of stupidity, it doesn't bring out the best of a talented cast but it is a very enjoyable blockbuster with a good visual style.

126. 300 (2006)

R | 117 min | Action, Drama

52 Metascore

In the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Dominic West

Votes: 864,681 | Gross: $210.61M

Loud, mad, angry and adrenaline fuelled, this may not cater for all tastes and be a mess in the story department but as an endlessly quotable and stylish battle machine it delivers.

127. No Escape (I) (2015)

R | 103 min | Action, Thriller

38 Metascore

In their new overseas home, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape from an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed.

Director: John Erick Dowdle | Stars: Lake Bell, Pierce Brosnan, Owen Wilson, Thanawut Ketsaro

Votes: 93,250 | Gross: $27.29M

A slightly xenophobic film clearly aiming to be a B movie, but this is a lot better than it looks and it frequently genuinely gets really pretty scary.

128. Léon: The Professional (1994)

R | 110 min | Action, Crime, Drama

64 Metascore

12-year-old Mathilda is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. An unusual relationship forms as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.

Director: Luc Besson | Stars: Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman, Danny Aiello

Votes: 1,246,540 | Gross: $19.50M

It's high IMDB rating is preposterous and the film is often charmless and thematically predictable, but its style, great performances and many of its quieter moments are still impressive.

129. Live and Let Die (1973)

PG | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

55 Metascore

James Bond is sent to stop a diabolically brilliant heroin magnate armed with a complex organisation and a reliable psychic tarot card reader.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Seymour, Clifton James

Votes: 115,527 | Gross: $35.38M

The first and one of the better Moore films has a boring main villain, some truly dreadful Bond girls and a finale which leaves a little to be desired despite That immortal one liner. It's good in all the other departments though.

130. Sicario (2015)

R | 121 min | Action, Crime, Drama

82 Metascore

An idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.

Director: Denis Villeneuve | Stars: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Jon Bernthal

Votes: 477,089 | Gross: $46.89M

A good film in many ways with some great direction and performances, but the praise exceeded the product here. In all honesty it's a bit tedious and everything this movie does has been done in better films.

131. Red Dragon (2002)

R | 124 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

60 Metascore

A retired FBI agent with psychological gifts is assigned to help track down "The Tooth Fairy", a mysterious serial killer. Aiding him is imprisoned forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter.

Director: Brett Ratner | Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Harvey Keitel

Votes: 291,016 | Gross: $93.15M

A surprisingly decent prequel which delivers the requisite thrills and has some limited psychological dimensions. Ralph Fiennes is utterly brilliant, although in this one Anthony Hopkins sadly isn't given much to do.

132. Spectre (I) (2015)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

60 Metascore

A cryptic message from James Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover the existence of a sinister organisation named SPECTRE. With a new threat dawning, Bond learns the terrible truth about the author of all his pain in his most recent missions.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes

Votes: 466,396 | Gross: $200.07M

After Skyfall this is a let-down and with its generic plot and lack of truly memorable moments this is just another Bond flick: exciting, explosive and full of swagger and charm, although it'll go down in history as one of the weaker Bond movies.

133. The Lone Ranger (2013)

PG-13 | 150 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

37 Metascore

Native American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson

Votes: 244,550 | Gross: $89.30M

It's bloated and overlong, but you shouldn't listen to all of those critics who can't cope with a big budget and overlong runtime. The Lone Ranger is a wild, insanely fun movie rattling along with the force of a train and it boasts plenty of humour, memorable characters and dazzling cinematography.

134. The Prestige (2006)

PG-13 | 130 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

After a tragic accident, two stage magicians in 1890s London engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion while sacrificing everything they have to outwit each other.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine

Votes: 1,441,985 | Gross: $53.09M

It's not the magic trick some people say it is and it's more hollow than Nolan's other movies, but it's still clever, well played and full of strong moments.

135. Pulp Fiction (1994)

R | 154 min | Crime, Drama

95 Metascore

The lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis

Votes: 2,221,673 | Gross: $107.93M

Quentin Tarrantino proves his skill as a writer and director once again and there are great performances left, right and centre but this hollow, bloated crime flick lacks in character, and goes on for far too long. Forrest Gump is better, sorry.

136. Touch of Evil (1958)

PG-13 | 95 min | Crime, Drama, Film-Noir

99 Metascore

A stark, perverse story of murder, kidnapping and police corruption in a Mexican border town.

Director: Orson Welles | Stars: Charlton Heston, Orson Welles, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia

Votes: 109,835 | Gross: $2.24M

A very skilled but often dull noir which is twisty, dark and mysterious like a film noir should be but it feels empty and is desperate to show off strong visuals in a way which is overall off putting.

137. The Rock (1996)

R | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

58 Metascore

A mild-mannered chemist and an ex-con must lead the counterstrike when a rogue group of military men, led by a renegade general, threaten a nerve gas attack from Alcatraz against San Francisco.

Director: Michael Bay | Stars: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, John Spencer

Votes: 358,267 | Gross: $134.07M

I'm embarrassed to admit that I like a film by Michael Bay, but this is actually quite good. It's not as good as some say it is because of Michael Bay's typically soulless direction and the slightly excessive length but it's well played, thrilling and delightfully bonkers.

138. The Fast and the Furious (2001)

PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

58 Metascore

Los Angeles police officer Brian O'Conner must decide where his loyalty really lies when he becomes enamored with the street racing world he has been sent undercover to destroy.

Director: Rob Cohen | Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster

Votes: 419,770 | Gross: $144.53M

This may have aged poorly and look a bit stupid in retrospect, but it still manages to serve up a surprising number of gleeful, undemanding and well executed thrills.

139. Baby Driver (2017)

R | 113 min | Action, Crime, Drama

86 Metascore

After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Eiza González

Votes: 611,560 | Gross: $107.83M

A solid spectacle, but with its bland plot and lack of typical Edgar Wright humor, critics were far too kind to it.

140. The Hateful Eight (2015)

R | 168 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

68 Metascore

In the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins

Votes: 660,251 | Gross: $54.12M

Overlong, self indulgent and deeply flawed, The Hateful Eight nevertheless ultimately proves Tarantino's skill as a writer and shows him taking his director's craft to new levels, with a great cast and many suspenseful set pieces enhancing the film.

141. Lone Survivor (2013)

R | 121 min | Action, Biography, Drama

60 Metascore

Marcus Luttrell and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shah, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare.

Director: Peter Berg | Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster

Votes: 306,806 | Gross: $125.10M

It doesn't go into any depth and gives away the ending with its title, but Lone Survivor's grit, brutal tension and effective minimalist script make it the rare good January release.

142. Fury (2014)

R | 134 min | Action, Drama, War

64 Metascore

A grizzled tank commander makes tough decisions as he and his crew fight their way across Germany in April, 1945.

Director: David Ayer | Stars: Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña

Votes: 547,548 | Gross: $85.82M

A decent enough WWII film with some good acting and intense set pieces, but it's not much more than a tank based action film and doesn't explore deeper themes like Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line do.

143. Exam (2009)

Not Rated | 101 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

Eight candidates for a highly desirable corporate job are locked together in an exam room and given a final test with just one seemingly simple question. However, it doesn't take long for confusion to ensue and tensions to unravel.

Director: Stuart Hazeldine | Stars: Adar Beck, Gemma Chan, Nathalie Cox, John Lloyd Fillingham

Votes: 125,374

More a puzzle box than a movie, this tense thriller will keep viewers guessing until the very end although some may find they can't be bothered to keep guessing.

144. Harry Brown (2009)

R | 103 min | Action, Crime, Drama

55 Metascore

An elderly ex-serviceman and widower looks to avenge his best friend's murder by doling out his own form of justice.

Director: Daniel Barber | Stars: Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, David Bradley, Charlie Creed-Miles

Votes: 91,394 | Gross: $1.82M

Downcast and simplistic, Harry Brown nevertheless offers a well-acted and powerful revenge story. It's also got Michael Caine being his usual great self and 3 awesome Game of Thrones actors in the same movie.

145. Everest (2015)

PG-13 | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Biography

64 Metascore

On May 10, 1996, mountain guides Rob Hall and Scott Fischer combine their expedition teams for a final ascent to the summit of Mount Everest. With little warning, a storm strikes the mountain and the climbers must now battle to survive.

Director: Baltasar Kormákur | Stars: Jason Clarke, Ang Phula Sherpa, Thomas M. Wright, Martin Henderson

Votes: 232,502 | Gross: $43.48M

It's a generic disaster movie which has various missteps, but it's more powerful and well done than you'd expect.

146. The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)

R | 129 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

80 Metascore

A retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later.

Director: Juan José Campanella | Stars: Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago, Carla Quevedo

Votes: 222,488 | Gross: $6.39M

This one is overrated as the characters are uninteresting and aside from the political context the plot is generic. The only things to get really excited about here are the ending and the incredible stadium sequence, but it's still a more than adequate thriller and well done up to a point.

147. Before I Go to Sleep (2014)

R | 92 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

41 Metascore

A woman wakes up every day, remembering nothing as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. One day, new terrifying truths emerge that force her to question everyone around her.

Director: Rowan Joffe | Stars: Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Anne-Marie Duff

Votes: 84,173 | Gross: $2.96M

It doesn't do anything particularly new or different, but it's an interesting British thriller with some against type acting and stylish visuals that is worth your time.

148. Rope (1948)

Approved | 80 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

73 Metascore

Two men attempt to prove they committed the perfect crime by hosting a dinner party after strangling their former classmate to death.

Director: Alfred Hitchcock | Stars: James Stewart, John Dall, Farley Granger, Dick Hogan

Votes: 153,739

It's far from Hitchcock's best film and it's more a mostly suspense free experiment than a film, but the strong performances and Hitchcock's steady hand make this an interesting watch.

149. RED 2 (2013)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

47 Metascore

Retired CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device.

Director: Dean Parisot | Stars: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins

Votes: 180,628 | Gross: $53.26M

This sequel plays it safe and doesn't do anything memorable or daring and the only thing it does is provide us with plenty of witty, action filled entertainment. Still, what's wrong with that?

150. The Equalizer (2014)

R | 132 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

57 Metascore

A man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour

Votes: 420,439 | Gross: $101.53M

It's overly violent and goes the motions, but the marketing promised us Denzel Washington dispensing justice on the Russian Mafia with the talented Antoine Fuqua behind the camera and that's exactly what we get.

151. Triple 9 (2016)

R | 115 min | Action, Crime, Drama

52 Metascore

A gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town.

Director: John Hillcoat | Stars: Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul

Votes: 77,124 | Gross: $12.63M

An confusing and flawed thriller, but this is deeper and cleverer than many films of its kind and it has many clever, suspenseful set pieces, making it one of 2016's underrated films.

152. Tower Block (2012)

Not Rated | 90 min | Thriller

Several months after witnessing a murder, residents of Tower Block 31 find themselves being picked off by a sniper, pitting those lucky enough to be alive into a battle for survival.

Directors: David Beton, James Nunn | Stars: Sheridan Smith, Jamie Thomas King, Jack O'Connell, Ralph Brown

Votes: 5,765

It's not the most logical or consistent film you'll find, but it's a gritty, surprisingly well acted British movie with some very tense moments and an interesting premise.

153. The River Wild (1994)

PG-13 | 111 min | Adventure, Crime, Thriller

63 Metascore

Rafting expert Gail takes on a pair of armed killers while navigating a spectacularly violent river.

Director: Curtis Hanson | Stars: Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon, David Strathairn, Joseph Mazzello

Votes: 50,218 | Gross: $46.82M

It's difficult to fault the performances and cinematography but it isn't difficult to fault the plot, frequent lack of tension and clichés.

154. The Hurt Locker (2008)

R | 131 min | Drama, Thriller, War

95 Metascore

During the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work.

Director: Kathryn Bigelow | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Guy Pearce

Votes: 473,982 | Gross: $17.02M

Tense and gritty, but lacking in any kind of emotional connection whatsoever, this is a hollow and forgettable war movie which is excellent on a technical level but totally unmemorable. They gave this best picture but not Apocalypse Now or Saving Private Ryan? Not everything can be explained I guess.

155. San Andreas (2015)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

43 Metascore

In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey with his ex-wife across the state in order to rescue his daughter.

Director: Brad Peyton | Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Colton Haynes

Votes: 256,799 | Gross: $155.19M

A ludicrous disaster movie that isn't a particularly good film in many ways, but it's better than most Roland Emmerich films and makes for a thoroughly enjoyable piece of explosion porn. File this one under 'guilty pleasures'.

156. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

R | 111 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

69 Metascore

After awakening from a four-year coma, a former assassin wreaks vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen

Votes: 1,194,714 | Gross: $70.10M

Some interesting artistic choices and fun action scenes make this less tiresome than other Tarantino films, but it's still quite annoying.

157. Licence to Kill (1989)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

58 Metascore

A vengeful James Bond goes rogue to infiltrate and take down the organization of a drug lord who has murdered his friend's new wife and left him near death.

Director: John Glen | Stars: Timothy Dalton, Robert Davi, Carey Lowell, Talisa Soto

Votes: 112,125 | Gross: $34.67M

It's far too dark for a Bond movie and isn't as fun as it should be, but it's not one of the worst Bond movies like some would have you believe as it's more powerful than most of them and has plenty of fun thrills.

158. Jason Bourne (I) (2016)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Thriller

58 Metascore

The CIA's most dangerous former operative is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past.

Director: Paul Greengrass | Stars: Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel

Votes: 242,167 | Gross: $162.43M

A generic sequel with a mediocre plot starring the still boring Jason Bourne character. That being said, if you're looking for thrills you'll never be disappointed.

159. Man on Fire (2004)

R | 146 min | Action, Crime, Drama

47 Metascore

In Mexico City, a former CIA operative swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

Director: Tony Scott | Stars: Denzel Washington, Christopher Walken, Dakota Fanning, Radha Mitchell

Votes: 389,796 | Gross: $77.91M

Man on Fire is well acted, boasts plenty of intensity and is overall a decent revenge movie but it goes over the top, wastes it potential and looks like it was filmed inside a rave.

160. Poseidon (2006)

PG-13 | 98 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

50 Metascore

On New Year's Eve, the luxury ocean liner Poseidon capsizes after being swamped by a rogue wave. The survivors are left to fight for their lives as they attempt to escape the sinking ship.

Director: Wolfgang Petersen | Stars: Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, Josh Lucas

Votes: 110,433 | Gross: $60.67M

A tense and effective disaster remake with awesome special effects, but it can get hard to focus on them when you're having to listen to that awful dialogue.

161. Con Air (1997)

R | 115 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

52 Metascore

Newly-paroled ex-con and former U.S. Ranger Cameron Poe finds himself trapped in a prisoner-transport plane when the passengers seize control.

Director: Simon West | Stars: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Colm Meaney

Votes: 319,417 | Gross: $101.12M

This loud, ludicrous and somewhat lacklustre action flick is sporadically entertaining and a piece of big dumb fun which is high on memorable so bad their great moments but short on originality.

162. Hardcore Henry (2015)

R | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

Henry is resurrected from death with no memory, and he must save his wife from a telekinetic warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers.

Director: Ilya Naishuller | Stars: Sharlto Copley, Tim Roth, Haley Bennett, Danila Kozlovskiy

Votes: 101,948 | Gross: $9.25M

Basically a cinematic first person shooter, this is largely drained of characterization and charisma but it delivers on the action and the POV gimmick largely works, although you may get motion sickness.

163. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

R | 153 min | Adventure, Drama, War

69 Metascore

In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Mélanie Laurent

Votes: 1,585,311 | Gross: $120.54M

With Tarantino's trademark self-indulgence, shallow story, arrogance and bland graphic violence, this is yet another painfully overrated effort from him. That being said, it has its moments and like all his other movies it isn't technically a bad film; rather it is flawed.

164. Thunderball (1965)

PG | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

64 Metascore

James Bond heads to the Bahamas to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Agent Emilio Largo in an international extortion scheme.

Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi, Luciana Paluzzi

Votes: 127,146 | Gross: $63.60M

A popular for some reason Connery outing and a dip (admittedly not that big as it's still fun) in the series. With DN, FRWL, GF, YOLT and OHMSS before and after this one sticks out as the one where all Bond really does is do stuff underwater.

165. Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

R | 119 min | Action, Thriller

41 Metascore

Secret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack and works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett

Votes: 292,470 | Gross: $98.93M

An aggressively mediocre movie which is thinly written and at times genuinely unpleasant but it's also suspenseful and well acted. At least it's better than White House Down.

166. Pompeii (I) (2014)

PG-13 | 105 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

41 Metascore

A slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him.

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson | Stars: Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Votes: 116,681 | Gross: $23.22M

Pompeii has many flaws, but then why is it so much fun?

A Polynesian sailor unjustly imprisoned after defending himself against a colonial bully is relentlessly persecuted by his island's martinet French governor.

Director: John Ford | Stars: Dorothy Lamour, Jon Hall, Mary Astor, C. Aubrey Smith

Votes: 3,042

A cheesy old Hollywood movie with some weak elements, this still makes for a good watch, largely thanks to John Ford behind the camera.

168. Murder on the Orient Express (1974)

PG | 128 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

63 Metascore

In December 1935, when his transcontinental luxury train is stranded by deep snow, detective Hercule Poirot is called on to solve a murder that occurred in his car the night before, with a multitude of suspects.

Director: Sidney Lumet | Stars: Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery

Votes: 69,175 | Gross: $0.07M

An overly grim and charmless Agatha Christie adaptation which benefits from an all star cast and clever plot.

169. Taken 2 (2012)

PG-13 | 92 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

45 Metascore

In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter.

Director: Olivier Megaton | Stars: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Leland Orser

Votes: 322,761 | Gross: $139.85M

Thrilling only in a passable way, this is neither fun enough to live up to the original nor as bad as everyone says it is.

170. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

PG-13 | 129 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

48 Metascore

Detective Sherlock Holmes is on the trail of criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty, who is carrying out a string of random crimes across Europe.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, Rachel McAdams

Votes: 480,663 | Gross: $186.85M

It doesn't match the original thanks to its weak storyline and going the motions approach, but it still provides some entertaining slo-mo action mixed with humour and great chemistry between the leads.

171. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

R | 102 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

46 Metascore

Some of Sin City's most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with a few of its more reviled inhabitants.

Directors: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Votes: 170,525 | Gross: $13.76M

Sin City 2 is another well acted and entertaining excursion into visually stunning darkness although without the emotion and fine storytelling which made the first a masterpiece.

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

56 Metascore

In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki

Votes: 332,776 | Gross: $45.45M

A thoroughly average blockbuster, this delivers the basic entertainment against an interesting backdrop but does little else, although it deserved slightly better than the terrible box office returns.

173. Flightplan (2005)

PG-13 | 98 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

53 Metascore

A bereaved woman and her daughter are flying home from Berlin to America. At 30,000 feet, the child vanishes, and nobody will admit she was ever on the plane.

Director: Robert Schwentke | Stars: Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard, Sean Bean, Kate Beahan

Votes: 171,890 | Gross: $89.71M

This puzzling thriller does keep you guessing, while the cinematography and Jodie Foster's strong lead performance also keep your attention, distracting viewers from the idiotic plot in a very effective manner.

174. The Girl on the Train (2016)

R | 112 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

48 Metascore

A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.

Director: Tate Taylor | Stars: Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux

Votes: 199,465 | Gross: $75.40M

Despite Emily Blunt's efforts, this is never anything more than a passable waste of time and it's overall a lazy Gone Girl... and that movie wasn't even that great.

175. The Green Hornet (2011)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

39 Metascore

Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.

Director: Michel Gondry | Stars: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz

Votes: 164,715 | Gross: $98.78M

It has some entertaining moments and is perfectly watchable but I'm not going to pretend it's a particularly good film because it isn't.

176. Double Jeopardy (1999)

R | 105 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

41 Metascore

A woman framed for her husband's murder suspects he is still alive; as she has already been tried for the crime, she can't be re-prosecuted if she finds and kills him.

Director: Bruce Beresford | Stars: Ashley Judd, Tommy Lee Jones, Bruce Greenwood, Benjamin Weir

Votes: 95,937 | Gross: $116.74M

It's about as factually accurate as Transformers, but although overall slight it is a genuinely suspenseful movie that does have some thrills.

177. Mindhunters (2004)

R | 106 min | Crime, Horror, Thriller

33 Metascore

A group of FBI trainees are taken to a remote island for simulation training. However, once there, they realize that they are being hunted by a serial killer, who might be someone amidst them.

Director: Renny Harlin | Stars: Val Kilmer, LL Cool J, Christian Slater, Eion Bailey

Votes: 64,226 | Gross: $4.48M

With a preposterous plot and plenty of bad writing, it is a terrible film but this is also very fun to watch and is heavy on unintentional laughter. This is a bad film I recommend.

178. Django Unchained (2012)

R | 165 min | Comedy, Drama, Western

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,696,356 | Gross: $162.81M

Its high placement in the IMDB Top 250 is offensive. It may boast entertaining acting and strong visuals, but its a self indulgent and bloated epic with too much talking and not enough payback. I thought this was a Western, not a talk show.

179. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

38 Metascore

Former cop Brian O'Conner is called upon to bust a dangerous criminal and he recruits the help of a former childhood friend and street racer who has a chance to redeem himself.

Director: John Singleton | Stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Cole Hauser, Eva Mendes

Votes: 297,761 | Gross: $127.15M

A satisfying if slight sequel that offers enough entertaining car action to keep viewers distracted.

49 Metascore

In the Texas bayous, a local homicide detective teams up with a cop from New York City to investigate a series of unsolved murders.

Director: Ami Canaan Mann | Stars: Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chloë Grace Moretz, Jessica Chastain

Votes: 22,004 | Gross: $0.05M

Just another movie. It's well acted and the cinematography and atmosphere are strong but it fails to generate interest in its already seen story and doesn't give us anyone to root for.

181. The Great Escape (1963)

Approved | 172 min | Adventure, Drama, Thriller

86 Metascore

Allied prisoners of war plan for several hundred of their number to escape from a German camp during World War II.

Director: John Sturges | Stars: Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson

Votes: 259,022 | Gross: $12.10M

Overlong, mechanical and often dull, this serves up plenty of iconic moments and some entertaining thrills but we have to get through a lot of tedium before that. After an overlong build-up there is an escape, but it isn't great.

182. Quantum of Solace (2008)

PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

58 Metascore

James Bond descends into mystery as he tries to stop a mysterious organisation from eliminating a country's most valuable resource.

Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench

Votes: 470,940 | Gross: $168.37M

Devoid of story, charisma and intelligence, this is a big let down not helped by the awful editing and a villain so un-menacing he makes Elliot Carver look like The Joker. However, it has some good set pieces and some emotional punch, as well as showing Bond's more human side.

183. The A-Team (2010)

PG-13 | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

47 Metascore

A group of Iraq War veterans look to clear their name with the U.S. Military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed.

Director: Joe Carnahan | Stars: Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Biel

Votes: 269,016 | Gross: $77.22M

Loud, mediocre and noisy, this is personality free action garbage with little soul or deviation from the expected, but it does have a certain sense of noisy fun.

184. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)

PG | 125 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

43 Metascore

James Bond is targeted by the world's most expensive assassin, while he attempts to recover sensitive solar cell technology that is being sold to the highest bidder.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams

Votes: 113,111 | Gross: $20.97M

A dumb and unmemorable Bond outing with some good moments and a great villain but little else to remember or care about. Both the film and Roger Moore cower in the shadow of Christopher Lee.

185. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

45 Metascore

A teenager becomes a major competitor in the world of drift racing after moving in with his father in Tokyo to avoid a jail sentence in America.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Lucas Black, Zachery Ty Bryan, Shad Moss, Damien Marzette

Votes: 300,119 | Gross: $62.51M

Less a F&F movie, more a distant forgotten relative, this boasts the usual stylish car action and has a good setting but can't escape the feeling of some pointless spin off and as action movies go it doesn't go above OK.

186. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)

PG-13 | 105 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

57 Metascore

Jack Ryan, as a young covert C.I.A. analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley, Kenneth Branagh

Votes: 138,264 | Gross: $50.58M

An OK action thriller which doesn't do anything remotely new or interesting but offers some fun moments. Kenneth Branagh shines while Keira Knightly nearly drags the whole movie down.

187. Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)

R | 137 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

83 Metascore

The Bride continues her quest of vengeance against her former boss and lover Bill, the reclusive bouncer Budd, and the treacherous, one-eyed Elle.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah

Votes: 806,078 | Gross: $66.21M

Dull, drawn-out and only occasionally clever, this is a pretty anticlimactic second film that isn't nearly as enjoyable as part 1. It's all about the various good moments scattered throughout at intervals.

188. Along Came a Spider (2001)

R | 104 min | Drama, Thriller

42 Metascore

When a senator's daughter under Secret Service protection is kidnapped from a private school, detective Alex Cross investigates the case even though he's recovering from the loss of his partner.

Director: Lee Tamahori | Stars: Morgan Freeman, Michael Wincott, Monica Potter, Dylan Baker

Votes: 95,920 | Gross: $74.08M

A mediocre thriller with some really stupid things and many derivative elements. Although it's got some good bits and improves as it progresses, it's totally inferior to the novel.

189. The Bourne Identity (2002)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

68 Metascore

A man is picked up by a fishing boat, bullet-riddled and suffering from amnesia, before racing to elude assassins and attempting to regain his memory.

Director: Doug Liman | Stars: Franka Potente, Matt Damon, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen

Votes: 576,506 | Gross: $121.66M

The character of Jason Bourne has the personality and life of a zombie, and the film itself isn't much better. The film has the occasional thrilling action sequence, but it's mostly confusing and boring.

190. The Bone Collector (1999)

R | 118 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

45 Metascore

A quadriplegic ex-homicide detective and his partner try to track down a serial killer who is terrorizing New York City.

Director: Phillip Noyce | Stars: Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Queen Latifah, Michael Rooker

Votes: 185,066 | Gross: $66.52M

Although the cast give their all, they can't make this disappointing murder mystery anything more than just another movie, especially with the ridiculous plot and overall blandness.

191. Non-Stop (2014)

PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

56 Metascore

An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages demanding $150 million into an off-shore account, or someone will die every 20 minutes.

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra | Stars: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Scoot McNairy, Michelle Dockery

Votes: 276,593 | Gross: $92.17M

One of the most ridiculous films in recent memory, this has some good acting and thrilling moments but it's ultimately a plane wreck of an action film which can't decide whether it wants to be mystery or thriller.

192. Man on a Ledge (2012)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

40 Metascore

As a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion.

Director: Asger Leth | Stars: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Mandy Gonzalez

Votes: 158,575 | Gross: $18.62M

It's perfectly harmless and watchable rubbish but it still gets weakened by bland performances and a silly plot.

193. Blackhat (2015)

R | 133 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

52 Metascore

A furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei, Leehom Wang

Votes: 64,324 | Gross: $7.10M

Robotic and dramatically flat, this offers Michael Mann's wonderful visuals and some good action scenes, but the script is one massive glitch with its boring characters and monotonous narrative.

194. Only God Forgives (2013)

R | 90 min | Action, Crime, Drama

37 Metascore

Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm, Gordon Brown

Votes: 118,149 | Gross: $0.78M

Pretentious to the point of being arrogant, Only God Forgives' brilliant neon soaked visuals are great to look at but since there's no story, this is truly a case of style over substance in the worst possible way.

195. Fast & Furious (2009)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

46 Metascore

Brian O'Conner, back working for the FBI in Los Angeles, teams up with Dominic Toretto to bring down a heroin importer by infiltrating his operation.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster

Votes: 311,345 | Gross: $155.06M

This is meant to be a fun action film. So why is it only that occasionally and mostly a straight faced, phoned in revenge film with Vin Diesel embarrassing himself trying to actually show emotion? Everyone phoned it in in this one.

196. Need for Speed (2014)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

39 Metascore

Fresh from prison, a street racer who was framed by a wealthy business associate joins a cross-country race with revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins.

Director: Scott Waugh | Stars: Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Kid Cudi

Votes: 178,567 | Gross: $43.58M

A stupendously silly car advert clearly sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, this has some very good cinematography and action scenes but after a while it just becomes mechanical and, believe it or not, dull.

197. Now You See Me (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 115 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

50 Metascore

An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money.

Director: Louis Leterrier | Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Common, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson

Votes: 708,691 | Gross: $117.72M

Great cast. Great premise. Stylish visuals. So much potential. I've forgotten it already. Smug, stupid and utterly devoid of emotion or intelligence, this is just the director doing his best to distract audiences with his good direction but failing. A sequel's in the works of course.

198. Robin Hood (2010)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

53 Metascore

In twelfth-century England, Robin Longstride and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Max von Sydow

Votes: 283,246 | Gross: $105.27M

This dull and dry adaptation shouldn't be associated with Robin Hood. That's an adventure story. This undeniably well made but tedious movie is not an adventure. It's an archery contest with a couple of battles and a lot of talking.

199. S.W.A.T. (2003)

PG-13 | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

45 Metascore

An imprisoned drug kingpin offers a huge cash reward to anyone that can break him out of police custody, and only the L.A.P.D.'s Special Weapons and Tactics team can prevent it.

Director: Clark Johnson | Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, LL Cool J

Votes: 153,998 | Gross: $116.93M

This tells us nothing we haven't been told before, and despite a good cast this is just a perfectly forgettable piece of formula which goes the motions for its whole runtime.

200. Deja Vu (2006)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

After a ferry is bombed in New Orleans, an A.T.F. agent joins a unique investigation using experimental surveillance technology to find the bomber, but soon finds himself becoming obsessed with one of the victims.
