The late, great Ray Liotta had a lot of memorable credits to his name throughout his career, but it's probably safe to say his best role was as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas." In fact, we said just that when we ranked the actor's career right here. Acting against heavy hitters like Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, Liotta had to essentially carry the entire movie — he's in practically every single scene and serves as the narrator and guide into the world of the mafia that Scorsese was presenting (adapted from the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi). Henry is a gangster; a criminal; a violent man. In a lesser actor's hands, this character might be detestable. But Liotta is able to make us have sympathy for Henry; we're caught up in his story, and when the third act of the film brings the character to the lowest moments of his life,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Animal Kingdom (Thomas Cailley)
In The Animal Kingdom, an Un Certain Regard-selected science-fiction romp from France, human-animal mutations are the new norm. Director Thomas Cailley begins things in media res with a familiar disaster-movie scene: François (Romain Duris) and Émile (Paul Kircher)––father and son, respectively––are stuck in traffic, making chit-chat, when something slowly begins capturing the attention of other drivers. An ambulance across the way begins to rumble. Then a man with a large winged arm bursts out, causing some damage before scurrying down a tunnel. Only mildly ruffled, François exchanges a jaded aphorism with another driver over: “Strange times.” – Rory O. (full review)

One of the great restorations of the last year––in the sense that not only is it of pristine quality, but that it invites an underseen gem back into the conversation––is that of Nancy Savoca’s 1993 drama Household Saints, which was executive-produced by Jonathan Demme. Led by Tracey Ullman, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lili Taylor, Judith Malina, Illeana Douglas, and Michael Imperioli, the ambitious, carefully observed drama follows the courtship of an Italian-American family before expanding into a tale of religious conviction. Scripted by Savoca and Richard Guay based on Francine Prose’s novel, the new 4K restoration premiered at New York Film Festival and now Kino Lorber and Milestone Films will open it theatrically on January 12 at the IFC Center. Ahead of the release, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the new trailer.

Sometimes, a particular subgenre simply isn’t your thing. I can count the number of haunted house movies I like with no fear of running out of fingers: Robert Wise’s original The Haunting; The Innocents; Crimson Peak; Hausu; Beetlejuice if you count comedies. Lake Mungo is a borderline case, not truly a haunted house movie for me, but a great film. I might also say The Others, but I last saw it about 20 years ago, so who knows? There’s one more I enjoy a lot, and we’ll come to that, but to cut a long story short, The Changeling had a bit of a mountain to climb with me. I’ll say this upfront: if you’re generally into ghost/haunting movies, you can add a star to my grade here.

The upcoming dramedy “In Fidelity” takes viewers through a surprising, difficult-to-answer question: Can you get a hall pass from your spouse if you’re dying?
Starring “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Parnell and Cara Buono, “In Fidelity” tells the story of Lyle and Holly, a happily married New York couple whose world is rocked when Holly becomes terminally ill — and asks to sleep with their well-known rock star neighbor (Dennis Haysbert) before she dies young.
It’s not an easy ask, even after Lyle says yes, and you can see for yourself in the humorously bittersweet trailer, right now at the top of the page.
Alongside Parnell, Buono and Hasbert, the film also features Willow Shields (‘’The Hunger Games’’) as their risk-taking Gen-z daughter, and Illeana Douglas (“Grace of My Heart”) as Lyle and Holly’s eccentric confidante Ethel.

Based on the 1958 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, David Koepp's 1999 film "Stir of Echoes" is one of the richer, more notably creepy ghost stories of its time. Set in a relatively cloistered, working-class suburb of Chicago, "Stir of Echoes" is about how years-old crimes can leave a mark on the entire community.
Kevin Bacon played a telephone lineman named Tom who, by the accounts of his wife (Kathryn Erbe) and wife' sister (Illeana Douglas), is pretty narrow-minded guy. At a neighborhood gathering, his wife's sister, as a party trick, decides to hypnotize Tom and subtly suggest that he should be "more open-minded." This suggestion seems to go awry, as when Tom awakens, he begins having ghostly visions of a teenage girl he doesn't recognize. Over the next few weeks, Tom receives further unusual impulses, most notably to dig, forcing him to tear up his own floorboards looking for ... something.

Since 1999, the reputation of "Stir of Echoes" — based on the book by science-fiction writer Richard Matheson — has continued to improve with age. It remains a standout in the long line of gripping ghost stories that came before it, and it helped set the stage for more mainstream paranormal hits down the line like "The Conjuring," in a time when meta-slasher films had taken over in a post-"Scream" horror landscape. Kevin Bacon gives a tortured performance as a man forced to solve the mystery behind the death of a local girl after she begins haunting him. After his New Age sister-in-law (Illeana Douglas) hypnotizes him, Bacon's character Tom can't stop seeing horrific visions, including one memorable scene where he pulls out his own bloody tooth.
"Stir of Echoes" was released in the wake of the huge success of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Sixth Sense," and was completely overshadowed by it.

We've been addicted to Joe Dante's "Trailers from Hell" website for many years. If you haven't experienced its retro-related treasures, it's time you did. What is "Trailers from Hell"? Well, who better to ask than the esteemed director himself. Here's Joe's description:
"Around 2007 I was in a quandry as to what to do with my 35mm trailer collection. Opportunities to screen this kind of material were pretty rare, even in Hollywood. So I thought, why not put them up on the internet? But that seemed underwhelming by itself, so I decided to add some voiceover commentaries on my own. I think the first ones I tackled were The Terror, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and The Unearthly. At first the idea was to mainly cover sci-fi and horror titles, but when a few of my friends got wind of the idea...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, with Oscar voting underway, we discuss the categories we still haven’t figured out yet.

But by this time next week, we’ll have made our final predictions and all it’ll be all over but the shouting. As such, I don’t want to devote too much time this week to our picks — but...

Refresh for updates… Dean Stockwell, the Quantum Leap, Blue Velvet and Married to the Mob star who died Sunday at 85, is being remembered today, with filmmaker David Lynch honoring the actor in his usual idiosyncratic way, and lifelong friend Russ Tamblyn offering a poignant goodbye.
Stockwell’s Quantum Leap co-star, Scott Bakula, honored the actor in a statement to Deadline, writing, “I loved him dearly and was honored to know him. He made me a better human being…” Read the entire statement here.
Lynch, who directed Stockwell in the actor’s great latter-career highlight Blue Velvet in 1986, invoked his friend’s name during his daily YouTube feature David Lynch’s Weather Report.
“Here in L.A., a cloudy morning,” Lynch intones in his immediately recognizable drone. “Very still right now, 55 degrees Fahrenheit, 13 Celsius. In honor of the great Dean Stockwell, I’d like to recommend today ‘Honky Tonk, Part 1’ by Bill Doggett.

In quintessential Logan Roy fashion, the HBO series “Succession” absolutely dominated Emmy nominations in terms of acting recognition. After an across-the-board snub by the acting branch last year, the Roy family came roaring back with an impressive nine acting bids, over-performing our own high expectations. In addition to the blindside of Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) sneaking into the competitive Supporting Actor category, “Succession” also picked up an unexpected nomination for Harriet Walter, who only 222 of our users correctly predicted––this author included.
Though Walter’s nomination indicates just how much the acting branch loved and paid close attention to the second season of the series, her surprise appearance in the category could potentially stymie a “Succession” victory in the Guest Actress category, where two-time Emmy-winner Cherry Jones also competes for her “Succession” turn as media mogul Nan Pierce. Might the surprise, second nomination in this category actually cost “Succession” some Emmy gold?...

The excellent documentary series Time Warp continues on May 19 with the second instalment, looking at some of the horror and sci-fi films that we love to visit again and again, and turn our friends on to. This is what makes a special favourite into a cult film; repeat viewings, and spreading our zany enthusiasm to anyone who will listen. The series continues with Joe Dante and his panel of Illeana Douglas, John Waters and Kevin Pollack providing colourful anecdotes, insightful commentary and behind-the-scenes context.
We start with horror films that have grown to cult status. When one thinks about horror films, they immediately imagine being frightened, scared, startled or disgusted. While this is often a common element, the genre includes several different kinds of horror. The...

“The Wrong Missy” is a rom-com, but it’s really a ’90s Jim Carrey movie merged with one of those slob-goes-on-a-corporate-retreat comedies that has starred everyone from Bill Murray to Adam Sandler to Will Ferrell. Here’s what’s new about it: The hypomanic Jim Carrey figure is a woman — Missy, played by the wild-card comedian Lauren Lapkus, who in this movie is like a grenade of happy insanity tossed into the middle of every scene. Lapkus, who looks like a hellion version of Illeana Douglas, is best known for playing Susan Fischer on “Orange Is the New Black” and for one arc on “The Big Bang Theory” (she was also quite good in Zach Galifianakis’s “Between the Ferns”), and in “The Wrong Missy” she’s an antically wired, rubber-faced, this-is-your-brain-on-media satirist-anarchist.

In “Ghost World,” everybody wants out, yet no one knows how to work the door. Nor do they want to. They’re more content to study the padding in the cell than to even consider an exit. That includes unapologetic and misunderstood loner Enid (Thora Birch) and her less tortured but still moody best friend Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson). Two characters in search of an exit. And then there’s Norman, the man sitting on a bench waiting for the bus that doesn’t come. Until it does, pulling Enid’s world out from under her.

“I’ve had dinner with Bong five or six times between here and Korea,” said Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar rival Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), who has been a fan of the director’s work longer than anyone else at the annual “daytime formal” Oscar Nominees Luncheon. Now the Korean filmmaker’s fans are legion, it seems.
Per usual, the nominees mingled during cocktails at this year’s venue, the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland, featuring a new set of risers for the real purpose of their visit: to be called onstage for the annual class picture.
The Academy was forced to find a new location due to the earlier-than-ever schedule, which made the Beverly Hilton unavailable. “The Two Popes” star Jonathan Pryce was there without Anthony Hopkins, chatting with fellow Brits George MacKay (“1917”) and Florence Pugh (“Little Women”). “The Irishman” director Martin Scorsese...

The annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon began in sadness and ended in celebration, but the common theme running through the event at the Ray Dolby Ballroom on Monday afternoon was change.
For the first time, an event that began in the early 1980s to celebrate the Oscar nominees at an event devoid of competition took place in January, not February or March. For the first time, it didn’t take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the luncheon had become an annual ritual. For the first time, it happened less than two weeks before the Oscars themselves, which this year take place on their earliest-ever date, Feb. 9.
This was a refashioned Nominees Luncheon, with a bigger location, an enlarged platform for the annual “class photo” of nominees and a different seating arrangement that put the 162 nominees who attended at a couple dozen long tables rather a series of round ones.

The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards gathered Monday for the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon and class photo.
Bong Joon Ho, Greta Gerwig, Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt were among those who received the loudest applause and cheers when their names were called for the photo. The annual event kicked off with a cocktail party, complete with music by DJ Kiss, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood.
Charlize Theron’s date was her mom, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz. “It’s her birthday!” Theron told Variety. “How do you like the party I’m throwing for her?”
Leonardo DiCaprio brought his dad, George. “Hey, Quentin,” Paramount’s Jim Gianopulos said to Quentin Tarantino. “I’m really proud of you!” The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director also explained that he was wearing a “Dolby” bowling shirt in homage to the venue.
Brad Pitt was mobbed by people asking for selfies.

Following the death of actor-director-screenwriter Buck Henry on Wednesday, Fans, friends and admirers in the entertainment industry paid tribute to the co-creator of “Get Smart” and writer behind “The Graduate.”
“Buck Henry was hilarious and brilliant and made us laugh more times than we even know. I was lucky enough to be on a panel with him at SXSW and he was so funny. He said ‘I don’t like to write with people because if they aren’t as funny as me I hate them and if they are funnier than me I hate them,'” Judd Apatow said about the two-time Oscar nominee in a post to Instagram. “He wrote The Graduate and To Die For and co created Get Smart and was a riot hosting SNL back when they would let a writer host SNL. One of the greats.”

Billy Bob Thornton's starring vehicle at Amazon, Goliath has been a wild ride.
Today, the streamer announced the fate of the legal drama.
So, will there be another season featuring Thornton as Billy McBride?
The simple answer is yes.
The longer answer is yes, and you better enjoy it while it lasts because Goliath Season 4 will be the series' last.
Goliath Season 3 dropped on Amazon on October 4, 2019, and in a couple of words, it was bat-sh!t crazy!
During its latest season, Billy's dear friend Bobbi (Sherilyn Fenn) got sucked into a sinkhole in her vineyard thrusting him into the world of water rights in northern California.
Also starring Nina Arianda and Tania Raymonde, the season had some pretty terrific guest stars.
Dennis Quaid was at the center of the season's thrilling arc as a wealthy corporate farmer named Wade, and Amy Brennaman joined as Wade's sister, Diana.

Nicole Kidman’s superb performance as a self-absorbed but beautiful monster is only enhanced by a terrific supporting cast including Matt Dillon, Joaquin Phoenix and Illeana Douglas. Buck Henry wrote the whip-smart script for Gus Van Sant’s black comedy about a fame-obsessed schoolteacher who turns to murder to make her mark.
