Reviews Missing the Point
tvonline-6923623 November 2021
If you're complaining that the characters are acting repetitively, you're missing the point. Nothing really changes.

If you're complaining that the people who are so powerful and successful are mostly bafoons, you're missing the point. That's exactly the commentary the creators are making through this satire.

If you're complaining because this seems farcical and unrealistic, you'd be deeply depressed to know how close to accurate the satire is.

We needed to be reminded that while the characters are entertaining, they would literally sell your freedoms to increase the bottom line of their media empire. We needed to be reminded that we aren't supposed to empathize with the characters representing the ppl who have destroyed democracy for the sake of profit. You aren't supposed to like anyone here. You are supposed to marvel at the acting and get chills as you are reminded that the elite sit in hotel suites sipping champagne while your children's future burns.

Motivations Confusing at Times
Hitchcoc18 September 2022
At times it's hard to figure out motivations when it comes to insider politics. Here we have a gathering of the Roy family, trying to figure out who the most substantial presidential candidate will be, now that the "raisin" is not seeking reelection. In addition to the bullying by Logan (a given) we have lots of stomach acid. I don't know what is going on with Greg. He is stuck in the middle, ultimately worried about how much money he will end up with. Tom is trying to figure out what prison will be like, including eating things he likes because for years it won't be like that. He stupidly has given himself over as a ritual sacrifice. Shiv is cut off at the knees and keeps coming back with her sniveling. The scene with the group picture tells us what a coward she is. And then we have Connor actually considered as a candidate! There is choice making and the motivations are lost on me. What exactly are they after? And why did they pick the guy they picked?

Another Great Episode

Just insanely compelling television, as always. The dialogue is fantastic, and I love the moments with Shiv, Tom, and Greg in particular. Can't wait to see where this leads!

The Roy Show
musicandsimplicity23 November 2021
The Roy family falls into king making. This was one of my favorite episodes ever-possibly because it falls into confirmation bias for me personally: the rich and powerful choose our leaders, not the people.

This was a beautiful episode fraught with conflict, showing the crushed veneer that is idealists (Shiv), the coke fueled king making rambles (Roman and the new Stooge), the entitlement of the affluent (Connor), the clawing desperation for autonomy of a Lion's cub (Kendall), the fragility of maimed men (Tom), reeking opportunism (Greg), and the brooding resiliency of Titans (Logan).

This series is here to show you that no political stance, no idealistic approach and certainly no single man is a bulwark...besides the owners of our information; Logan is our American God and we made him and enabled him. Armstrong isn't going to make you like it or forget it. He's embarrassed of you, all of those around him and himself for letting these Priests in the nursery.

If you don't understand that you are a mockery as well as the rest of our plight, then you are part of the problem.

This was brilliant writing that made a filler episode a marvel while still managing and pushing the plot forward. I never give 10's (and it's not like my opinion even matters), but this is first 10 in TV since DARK's series closer and Succession's Season 2 finale.

10/10 Stars.

What It Takes
lassegalsgaard27 December 2021
After the second season of "Succession" hit, I didn't think that we were going to get a third season that would be able to overtake it as the show's best. I don't know how much longer it will go as they've said that it's not likely to run for that many more seasons, which I like. I don't think it's wise to keep milking a show, even one that's as good as this one is. I'd much rather have a tight show that I can always go back and rewatch and not feel like it had a not-so-good season attached. Luckily, the third season has not yet disappointed and keeps bringing us immersive storylines that keep the family apart just long enough for everything to seem like it will come tumbling down. Jesse Armstrong has such a nice grip on this entire show and seems to know exactly what he wants to do with every single character in his arsenal. The latest episode delved more into the political aspect of the show, and it took everything in a whole new direction that I didn't know I wanted. Jesse Armstrong has always known how to write politic, and the writers he has assembled for this show knows it as well, because this was an absolute blast of an episode. It's all a part of getting the family's power back and as long as the writing keeps supplement the things that the family needs to succeed, then the show is great, and this was all about that.

As per usual, the episode is phenomenally well-written. The dialogue is sharp, and all the characters work their part to an extremely satisfying nature in the episode. My favorites have always been the episodes that were surrounded around the family making decisions, and this is this season's version of that episode, and it might have been the most engaging to date. I'm a big fan of exploring politics and when a show that's this invested in its political aspect finally tackles it as a plot point, it felt like something coming full circle after a long time where we've been waiting.

And the episode's exploration of politics was very interesting. I don't think that this is actually how a candidate is decided upon, but the climate of today seems like it would definitely offer something like this. There's always a level of corruption in everything, and this episode definitely took that and ran with it. They never made it Bond-level but kept it at a point where it seems realistic enough. It's about deconstructing politics and how decisions are made behind closed doors, which this episode achieved with flying colors. Hopefully, they'll hold on to this for future episodes too.

Kendall took a bit of a backseat this week, which was a little weird to begin with. However, as the episode went along, I started to realize that it was to showcase the dwindling importance of Kendall's crusade as its slowly falling apart. This show has always been about its drama, and with everything that's going on right now, we can sometimes forget that these characters are just regular people despite their status. Kendall is once again in a position of power, but he's slowly losing that power because he's so obsessed with revenge, which feels very familiar right here.

The episode had one of the strongest performances I've seen from Matthew Macfadyen to date, and the entire episode provided a good deal of development for Tom. It really showcased Tom as a loyal servant to the Roy empire, and as he's slowly finding his place in the family, Macfadyen is also finding his place among a large ensemble. He navigates this episode with flying colors, easily becoming the MVP of the week. I also think that Justin Kirk's guest performance as radical political Jeryd Mencken was a highlight. He's comedic timing was priceless and I hope he comes back.

"What It Takes" was an episode that really heightened the tension and shows the cracks starting to form on both fronts which will have consequences. The political focus of the episode was a highlight for me, and I start to see something forming that will definitely take our characters down a dark path to come.

I fell asleep the other day too just like someone else but I still love it
UniqueParticle23 November 2021
Would've even reviewed yesterday but had a rough day. Even if the show is sliding down steeply I love the writing the most it's so juicy! I like how mixed some of the reviews are most of my other reviews are I like a lot that most don't. Matthew Macfayden's character is probably my favorite he's delightful! Crazy how some controversial stuff was said in this one, still a pretty solid episode though.

This is the Best Episode I ever saw on TV after watching SUCCESSION 5 Times
arghadeepmisra27 August 2023
The reviews are so bad in this Episode is just because people miss the point of what will happen and how can it affect. I have watched this show 5 times and Season 4 - 2 Times, just because I wanted to get every ounce of this show.

The editing, dialogues and screenplay overall is out of this world. The Greg-Tom dynamic is outstanding. Logan is a beast in this show. Shiv is shining like a star.

Each and every minute of this episode is blood pumping. Honestly after watching 172 Web-Series till now, this Episode is my favorite so far that nothing even comes close.

The complexity of Crown, the Mindful ness of Prison Break, The emotion of breaking bad, the scope of Game of Thrones. All of this on a single episode.

If I could, I would've bowed my head to the creators for making this episode. No tricks just excellence of creative minds. Fabolous,

I kinda love this episode?
TheTooMuchInformation23 December 2021
Season 3 of Succession has been a weird one for me. As it was airing it somewhat felt like a mixed bag. I wasn't really sure what was off, but in the end I feel it was satisfying as a whole. I've been rewatching the season in my free time and I've gotten a lot more clarity on my opinions. There is a pacing issue with the season, episode 4 being the main cause. But this isn't about that episode, it is about this one.

The first time I watched this I felt it was kind of boring and uneventful. I gave it a 7 the first time around, but now seeing it again I kinda loved it. I don't know, I was just really into it. It was essential what I love about succession, people in rooms talking and then more people in bigger rooms talking. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood the first time I saw this episode, but I've really come around on it. I don't like the title though, the title is pretty basic and dumb.

Great dialogue, flimsy plot
caballero-1922 November 2021
Succession has one of the most.entertaining and clever dialogue in tv show but this amazing and prehabs unique characteristic does not always save the show from the main problem which is continue the dispute between Kendall and Logan, however, this is a great and solid show and we all know that the final episodes will be tremendous.

Very overcomplicated and pretentious dialog
wutangkillabee22 November 2021
The show is great as usual but I've been noticing in S3 that the dialog is extremely try-hard and too clever for it's own good. Nobody speaks this witty on the fly and honestly it's just confusing because you end up focusing on what the hell was just said.

Oh no....
jeroen-10623 November 2021
With a couple of strong episodes, season 3 is a bit of a disappointment.

First, no one of the characters seem to grow or change. I see too much of a repeat, and it's starting to bore me a bit. What did really happen the last few episodes when it comes to story-arc?

Secondly, specifically this episode, the dialog felt over-complex and pretentious. It was hard to follow, for the wrong reasons (I want to do my best, but the dialogue felt over-complex and abstract in a contrived manner, so I zoned out).

I hope this season will pick up steam, because right now it feels my favorite show is slowly disintegrating.

Succession has perfected itself and for that reason it needs to change.
truthbrarian26 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I find myself agreeing with both haters and lovers of this show. Episode Five on a rewatch, I was able to see how brilliantly funny it was. This episode was PERFECT but it was perfect in a way that its like making the perfect hamburger when you have spent the entire 2.5 seasons at a great steakhouse. We get it, these characters, the satire, we really hate FOX News etc. I think that it is time to bring some radical beliefs into this show, the thought these characters can actually win.

Everything below is fanfiction ideas that you are free to skip, are more for my personal enjoyment and hoping to have the HBO writers check them out:

Here is what I want to see from Greg, I want him to get to stand up to people, act like a man, lose all hesitance or fear in his voice and eventually leave the show. I don't think I want to see his character with a kernel of innocence lose it all. The writers probably never intended Greg to be a fan favorite character but they have to face it nobody wants to see Greg fall into utter evil and destroy his soul. This show needs to also focus down to 4 major characters tops.

I would resolve his story like this, he goes to his grandfather at trial and says in a determined unwavering voice "I am a serious man" and before its too late, Greg pleads to him that he knows that his family is rotten and deserves nothing BUT please use his legal brilliant mind to save Tom from prison as a settlement and allow Tom to pin all of the negligent murders of the Cruise line on various people. Explain that Greg only sued Greenpeace for showing his grandpa Greg was serious. Please give Greg a small inheritance too so he can prove to the world he is a decent person living his own life. This standing up for what is right impresses his grandfather and he agrees.

Later, give Greg a scene where he deus ex machinas saving the family in a flash of brilliance. This impresses Logan so much that he wakes out of his stupor and does Greg's entire suggestion to his families outrage, giving certain roles and jobs to every family member and says, "son what do you want" Greg without pause says "I want to be the manager of your Midwest theme park division after all, nothing more, nothing less". And thus ends the story of Greg. Afterward there is a farewell scene where Greg and Tom hug and Tom kisses Greg deeply on the lips with tears in his eyes. Tom says thank you. Greg punches Tom and says you'll always be my best friend but never see me again. THE END

I would finish Toms story as he gets rescued from the law, by showing Tom having a speech about his absolution of his crimes, the resolve they have to fight for victims rights. There is someone big breasted and beautiful in the audience, falling in love with Tom's eloquence. Tom finishes his speech and walks off and she eventually encounters him. She seduces Tom by telling him what he has always wanted to hear from Shiv "I love you, I want you" they then make sweet love and Tom is finally one day fully happy and feeling masculine and like a man for the first time in many years. That is a win for him although he will have massive hell to pay later naturally.

I want to see Kendall on the phone getting ready to sell the theme park Greg is about to take over to screw Greg like he promised and then Tom overhearing the call, punches Kendall straight in the face. Saying, do whatever you want to all of us, leave Greg out of it. I realized after all of this, I am ready mentally to go to prison, I will KILL YOU, if you sell Greg's theme park or go after him. I am not like the others I come from Minnesota a land of killers. Kendall backs off and goes away to run his new Me Too charity for the Democratic Party.

The season ends with everyone basically having a decent position and role to play, loss of a character, next season is the folly of trying to make Connor Roy president...will he win? Is America that dumb? And a new easier to follow narrative that can expand the show to many more seasons.

I am just throwing my ideas of fanfiction out there if anyone from the writers room gives a crap they have full permission to use these as inspiration. I think what people want is a breather from constant futility and please consider it.

Weak Mid Season Form
zayj9622 November 2021
One of the lower quality episodes of the show. Some great moments of dialogue as per usual but a little disjointed as a whole. Stakes felt sudden and rushed and failed to build to much of anything as a result. Seeds for the future certainly laid but not the greatest watch in the present.

Little character development, silly storyline's and unbelievable plots, it's become a soap opera with a great cast.

Seriously?
clawingthepsychosphere22 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The highlight of this episode is Shiv selling her soul? As if she hadn't already done this, you know, at the end of S1?

I'm legitimately baffled by what I'm watching here. It's like I've got special secret access to S1 and S2 while the writers are going into this completely blind. WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH ALL OF THIS BEFORE. For what purpose do we need yet another repeat of Shiv discarding her values to get closer to the top? Where is her growth as a character through all of this?

Right now, Tom is the only one that still retains anything resembling an arc, and perhaps Roman and to a lesser extent Connor.

And the scenes taken individually are still good. They might not be the best the show has ever put out, but I'm always entertained. However, those scenes add up into an episode and ultimately fall into a season. I suppose there is a chance they'll blow us all away with the finale, but right now I'm not seeing it.

Getting back to square one
mertafor22 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This season, first 2 episodes were very good and 3rd one was phenomenal. Afterwards I was expecting one or two filler episodes and yes 4th and 5th can be considered as fillers, they were alright. But this one was pretty boring. Entire hour of pointless conversations were about picking a new winner for Logan again (and showing that how disgusting republicans can be). Ken gets more desperate and irratable than ever because his plan is quite flimsy if he ever has one other than playing other family members. Also his "mask", his fake personality is getting even more annoying than Greg. Shiv was a loser, is a loser and will be loser because her moves can be seen by anyone miles away. Clearly show tries to build new alliances and plot while season finale is getting close however, I feel like I'm making circles here as a viewer. I'd like to see someone deserves the throne but the show is surrounded by fake and the most irratable characters ever. Roman's shining moment felt like a forced twist for future episodes.

Winning is all about politics and strategy, not the best personality in their world, I get the message. But honestly I'm losing my patience. Hope they can pick the tension where they left in 3rd episode.

It's like this one had a whole different writing staff who all spend too much time on Twitter. Boring, melodramatic, shallow, redundant episode. Hopefully an isolated incident rather than the beginning of a decline.

The first two seasons of this show were amazing, but this season is so awful that I'm not sure I'm going to be able to continue. In fact, this season is so bad that I'm wondering if the original writers were replaced with newbies?

Is this really interesting seeing constant bickering between Roman the complete idiot and shiv who doesn't complete her own sentences.

Are we any further forward than we were in the first episode.?

And so begins the slide...
imdb-0377522 November 2021
Yes, I know the Roy clan is a metaphor for the Murdochs. The creators nary have a single likable character of the whole lot. Surprising that Logan heads up an $85 billion dollar news and entertainment conglomerate and can't decide to call a doctor to treat a UTI, much less name a successor to the throne. Now, take a cognitively impaired one-term president, nickname him 'the Raisin', then flip his D to an R. 15 minutes ago, the company was about to be taken over in a proxy battle, an suddenly they're at a CPAC-esque conference to knight a president? Instead of another old white-haired guy, they go with the 'little d Democrat' who just left his job from a cable news outlet. I was watching last night like it was an episode of SNL from 2008. Scatter in a few borrowed bits of dialog from Billions, and that was the episode. I'm disappointed because instead of crafting a story, they are starting to resort to low-hanging fruit witty punchlines. I'll see if this episode is an anomaly if they end the season strong in the last 3 episodes.

Obvious change in writing for the worse
captainspork-5821022 April 2023
Clear change in writers compared with earlier seasons/episodes.

This episode serves as a microcosm for what's wrong with a great many shows and movies in the modern era: writers who apparently have more experience on Twitter than they do in the real world.

Characters are reduced to one-dimensional caricatures of themselves. Pretentious politically charged dialogue that serves as a heavy-handed allegory for modern politics. Characters being used as a direct mouthpiece for the writer's own political views (Shivan). All of this sums up to interactions between characters that don't feel believable nor are they engaging.

Such a boring filler episode
interestingstuff3 February 2023
There was no point to this episode at all. It was obviously made just to fill time and increase the episode count. Nothing worthy happens and nothing leads to anywhere.

It's just characters chitchatting and making pointless small talk for 60 minutes without a point.

Just skip this episode and don't be fooled by those 10/10 reviews most of which were obviously written by show's producers and HBO employees who are known to post fake reviews to boost their show's IMDB ratings.

We are only in the third season and this show is already showing its old age and losing its interest. Writers should focus more on writing good episodes and less on writing fake reviews to praise their show.
